Juliette returns home for a not-quite vacation, to deal with her anxiety. It's unclear why she thinks spending time with her family might help. Her sister Marylou is struggling to balance her two kids, life with her husband, and an ongoing affair. (She frequently meets the young man she's sleeping with in the greenhouse in her backyard. He owns a lot of animal costumes.) Their aging parents annoy them both in different ways. Juliette meets Polux, who seems interested in more than friendship, and who adopts a duckling to impress her. The book is about the interaction of all of these characters, and it all feels organic, personal, and compelling.

Jourdy's soft colors and panel-less borders make everyone in the book seem more human and their emotions more subtle. Juliette makes me think of Michel Rabagliati's Paul books because they're all about family and the people in it, though the families are not at all similar.

I'm still pondering the image on the copyright page, under the book's dedication, "Thank You to Émile." It's a female garden gnome facing me, having opened her coat, flashing the reader. I'm not sure how this sets the tone for the graphic novel, but it made me laugh.

Camille Jourdy was born in Chenôve, France, in 1979. He studied Fine Arts in Épinal, where she also wrote her first book, 'Une araignée, des tagliatelles et au lit, tu parles d'une vie!' (Drozophile, 2004). She subsequently headed for Strasbourg to study Decorative Arts, and settled in Lyon upon graduation in 2005. She is author and illustrator of children's books like 'Séraphine, ou le charmer incertain' (2006), 'Peau d'ours' (2006) and 'Léopold' (2008). She made three graphic novels starring the character 'Rosalie Blum' for Actes Sud between 2007 and 2009.

Enthousiasmée par l'album de Camille Jourdy, j'en ai voulu plus. Alors, en attendant de pouvoir lire la trilogie précédente de cette auteure, j'ai regardé le film qui en a été tiré par Julien Rappeneau : Rosalie Blum, avec Noémie Lvovsky, Kyan Khojandi et Alice Isaaz dans les rôles principaux. Ce n'est peut-être pas le film du siècle, n'empêche que j'ai vraiment bien aimé, notamment grâce aux acteurs susmentionnés. Le film se déroule en trois temps en suivant les trois personnages, et comme tous se suivent et s'épient, la construction du film les fait se croiser et se recroiser selon les trois points de vue différents. Ainsi, petit à petit, le puzzle se forme, et on comprend ce qui anime ces âmes tourmentées, bienheureuses de laisser l'imprévu et l'inattendu s'inviter dans leurs parcours quotidiens. Le garçon qui n'a pas coupé le cordon ombilical va trouver la force de le faire, la jeune fille paumée osera prendre ses velléités artistiques au sérieux, et la mystérieuse Rosalie Blum se permettra un pas en avant vers des retrouvailles incertaines mais cruciales. Certes, tout est un peu attendu, mais j'avoue avoir été franchement émue dans les toutes dernières images qui révèlent la clef inconsciente de ce remue ménage fantaisiste. Et puis, qu'est-ce qu'il y a de mal avec les happy endings, hein ? Surtout quand ils amènent un franc sourire sur le visage de Noémie Lvovsky, pas vrai ?
