The best way I’ve seen this described is in the analysis by “InkWrites” (on YouTube. He made a whole video about the ‘apology’ song)

A lot of people keep going “she didn’t rape him” but like.. it’s sooo easy to interpret it that way, the subtext is THERE. And whether she sexually abused him or not, she nearly drove that man to suicide!

To quote Ink directly “Abuse is not a hierarchy” just because you don’t think she is a rapist doesn’t mean she hasn’t abused that man HORRIFICALLY. Giving her the benefit of the doubt that in seven years she somehow didn’t cross that one physical boundary, despite all the hunting to that.

Like, come on.. no matter what type of abuse it was, she abused him.

Jorge is great at humanizing his villains. As he should. The moment we see abusers as inhuman monsters, that is when he are unable to identify abusers in our lives, because “they aren’t monsters, they’re too human!”

But while Calypso was being manipulative to Odysseus, apparently a huge portion of the audience fell for that shit too

Actually insane how people defend Calypso like regardless of if she did force herself on Odysseus physically in Epic*, she still forces herself on him emotionally. She's constantly ignoring boundaries, for seven years she had abused him, but because she was, what, lonely it makes her in the right?? No?? Being in love with someone, with anyone, does not entitle you to their reciprocation at all. Even if you are in a committed relationship, no always has and will forever mean no. He explicitly denies consent to her 'affections' throughout the song.

She is an abuser even if she isn't a rapist.

*the song 'Love In Paradise' does hint that she forces herself on him physically due to the 'soon into bed we'll climb' line, even if she didn't rape him, she does essentially make or it's hinted that she makes him sleep with her every single night for like seven years. Which regardless I would consider sexual abuse as she clearly has feelings for him and wouldn't want him in her bed if it wasn't for said feelings.

Here's a first sketch on how i picture Epic Odysseus and Calypso, mainly based on the idea i detailed earlier of her dolling him up and pampering him (and him having a complete loss of agency in how he looks). Still cant quite get their looks down though, especially on paper since i dont exactly have access to my drawing tablet at the moment.

something that I love about 'love in paradise,' is that Calypso is beautiful, she is charming, she's a powerful goddess offering paradise. Ody still says no and she doesn't care. She rapes him, she sexually assaults him and there is nothing he can do about it, and the musical and the poem makes it clear that's what it was.

Calypso is everything society says a man should want and it's still treated as sexual assault because Odysseus says no and she doesn't care. Even in 'God Games,' it's made clear Odysseus didn't consent so it's not cheating.

He was attacked and survived, never in the musical is Odysseus blamed for what he endured. Athena sees how after 7 years of being trapped with Calypso he is ready to kill himself if she doesn't act soon. She argues to Hera, goddess of marriage, that he never cheated on his wife to show that being raped isn't cheating and Hera agrees.

Odysseus: Oh okay, atleast there's someone here, I'm sure this is just a normal mortal woman or nymph of some kind who has decided to heal me and won't have me imprisoned here for 7 years *sees her eyes glowing and smirking* I just had to open my big mouth....

penelope’s hands always end up on odysseus’ cheeks when they embrace. her long, elegant fingers always find the curls on the side of his face, and he adores how she twists his hair when they kiss. when he leaves, the feeling becomes a distant memory, one he desperately clings to.

when circe’s attempt at flirtation seemed to be working, her hands found odysseus’ elbows, locking him in so slightly. even as her right hand trailed down to grab her dagger, she had him ensnared in her perfect trap.

calypso wraps her arms around odysseus’ neck, not once asking if he wishes for it or if he feels comfortable as she does so. odysseus flinches every time he comes in contact with the goddess, yet she chooses not to notice. her arms wrap around him, tight and unforgivingly loving.

Never once in “Love In Paradise” does Odysseus take to the chorus/tune/melody. The “We got all you could want here, all you could need here” melody in spite of Calypso, and not giving in to her. He’ll sing it, but in his own way, to try and speak in her language to get it through to Calypso that he is never going to be hers, he is his own and has a wife already, and will never fully, completely be Calypso’s
