The Spindle Galaxy, C53 // Brian Valente

The Spindle Galaxy is probably most notable for the supermassive black hole that lurks at its center. One of the ways astronomers are able to estimate the mass of a black hole is by observing the temperature of hot gas being dragged towards it. Using this method, NASA astronomers estimate that the black hole in this galaxy is about two billion times the mass of our Sun. That means that the Spindle Galaxy hosts the nearest billion-solar-mass black hole to Earth!

Extremely small spoilers for the c3 ending warning

But I think a really fun bit of Sol's character that I kinda didn't notice until the final episode is that ever since Irondeep (or maybe even before?), Sol has just been learning how to sew and crochet. And I have extreme respect for Murph letting Sol use that knowledge in the final episode to redistribute the magic of his displacement cloak amongst the party. I just really love those kinds of small character details in fantasy - the hobby they pick up randomly that slowly becomes more and more of a skill as the story progresses.

YES ! sols background knitting/crochet hobby (theyre used kind of interchangeably) is one of my favourite little quirks of his to think about... and if you keep track of its offhanded mentions, it actually weaves (hehe) a really sweet mini-story about sols character !

(teeny tiny mini essay under the cut, because i. have. thoughts)

so! a minor um actually is that sols knitwork is actually brought up pretty much at the VERY start of his character intro;

"...I'm wearing a homemade sweater that is in the same pattern as the standard issue synth knight sweater, but that one didn't fit me, so ive crafted my own as a replica - the sleeves are a little long, i'm still working on it, i like to knit in my spare time to quell my thoughts a bit..." (ep 1)

so we establish 1) he likes to knit, 2) knitting is an almost meditative practice, a very physical-based method of dealing with his thoughts, 3) he wants to fit in with his cohort of synth knights, even though their 'standard' has excluded and rejected him 4) he takes on this rejection without any bitterness, and instead with an optimism that his own personal inadequacies can be overcome by trying his darn best, 5) he's a cute frog in an oversized sweater

it's a pretty small & overall NOT important line that doesn't mean anything, but you COULD interpret it as the introductory, basic threads of meditative practice, community, belonging and identity that return as pretty major elements in sol as a character!

other, pretty major encounters with the knitting/sewing motif:

ep 7: Callie "we're sort of entwined now, right? i mean, our fates are somewhat braided at this point" + sol "if you're saying that we're friends then yes!" (this isn't a sol knitting moment, but good GOD 'our fates are braided' + them later discovering they're peregrine + sol sewing peregrine patches - we LOVE unintentional foreshadowing)

ep 27: Before the king durretar fight, sol gives everyone a peice of black yarn to wrap around their arms, a symbol of the living will they made to each other. Later in the ep, he holds up the band just before he goes down

ep 39: Right before he leaves to return to irondeep, sol gives swag "a little bracelet of yarn, just so we can feel connected" (literally FUCKING RUINOUS when you think about this being THE LAST TIME THEY SEE EACH OTHER FACE TO FACE and all the other moments sol gives his loved ones threads/bracelets. god. actually ruinous)

ep 53 (short rest!): This requires maybe a bit of context... but essentially, its caldwell describing sol's conflict of wanting to save the people he loves VS the growing reality of his inability to do so as, "no matter how big and thick and fluffy a sweater he knits, it always unravels itself"

ep 57: sol plants a piece of thread on the two ice swags (red and purple) as a way to tell them apart

ep 61: sol takes the black band from the king durretar fight and weaves it into a design that he made of the peregrine symbol/callie's sigil so that they can all wear it as a team (and one for a squire too, of course!)

ep 72: sol shreds his displacer scarf & patches up everyone's track jackets with it, to share the protection magic (this does end up saving calder's life i think.... THAT'S THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP BABY.)

finally, also in ep 72: galactic swag returns the night sky to the faewild, and sol comments "now that's knitting..."

I think. All in all. It's like. sol is this guy who, perhaps more than anything else, longs for family, home & community. He found this in launchpad and mothership, and their promise that if he could just work hard enough to prove that he meets their standards, then he CAN fit in and be worthy, and belong, and be part of something big. And over the course of campaign 3, he finds this with duck team.

All these desires for connection are expressed through the small things he knits for the people he loves. It keeps coming up over and over again, sol trying to stitch pieces of himself into his friends. Have this yarn, and this thread, and this bracelet, so you can remember you have someone to fight for and someone fighting for you (i have THOUGHT about this being kind of like a Lady's favor to a knight.... i've THOUGHT about this...) In ep 39, he gives swag a mushroom with the stated purpose that it might let sol know if swag dies. In ep 41, he tells hardwon that "there haven't been many people that I've met that have stuck around and meant something to me". I think you could interpret.... sol's habit of giving little knit gifts to his friends as maybe kind of a manifestation of that worry. that people are going to leave him, and he's going to end up alone again. so the thread of the living will comes back over and over again... no matter where you are, dead or alive, we'll be connected somehow.

You can also interpret all of this in the context of his childhood! in the waterpark ! A place where he was cold, and in danger all the time, and alone, and nobody made any 'big and thick and fluffy' sweaters for him. That the way he responds to this is... by making sure the people that he loves never ever have to feel like that. Here's something to keep you warm, and to remind you that i Know you, I Think of you, and i Love you. Sol just wants to protect all his friends by knitting them up in a big comfy sweater (and by the finale, in a way, he does!)

anyway ! those are my um. my. very minor thoughts about sol & knitting. i think about it a normal amount i promise. it is really REALLY a very fun bit about his character and it is. wonderful to see it evolve over the campaign.

Also since I accidentally went whole hog and wrote a full essay. Um. more sol knitting mentions that I personally find very delightful, although less relevant to this specific analysis:

Ezry arc: "i haven't had a chance to knit in a while, that really mellows me out" < sol's explanation for nearly punching a salamander to death because he kind of reminded him of a completely different salamander guy who had the audacity to go to the movies with albin, once. Really cute because awww he knits to mellow out. and also. god sol is fucking Insane. frog who is for sure possessive a normal and healthy amount

Living Woods arc: the living woods arc has sooo many cute lil sol knitgifts. sol gives calder a reversible beanie that has the initials CK (for calder kilde) and KC (for kalder cilde)... he says he was making it for calders birthday! (i didn't check this particular moment for accuracy, but i DO rmb calder saying smthn to the effect of "this is the nicest thing anyone's ever got for me") ..... this also has the famous callie crochet bra + i THINK sol's knit boots for calder

Irondeep arc: sol makes the infamous knit hammer cover with pompoms for kenna. (he later also makes i think.. a cloth for kenna to clean her hammer? he's trying guys....)

Tsunare arc: callie asks sol to make a gunk bindle

Ice knife arc: EVERYBODY IS REALLY MEAN TO SOLS KNITTING. SOMEBODY DEFEND HIM HE DOESNT DESERVE THIS....

Faewild arc: after calder gives himself a crop top , "i will Happily be your tailor"

Conclusion? this frog loves his friends!!!!!

Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina permanently protects the Johns River headwaters and iconic viewshed in Blowing Rock

Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina announces the purchase and

permanent protection of a 326-acre parcel of land in Blowing Rock, NC, that contains the

headwaters of the Johns River and is part of an iconic view seen from The Blowing Rock

attraction, U.S. 321 and other locations within the town limits of Blowing Rock.

The property is positioned on the Blue Ridge escarpment, partially located in both the Blowing

Rock and Globe communities of Caldwell County, and is part of the viewshed corridor of the

sweeping and magnificent mountainous panorama.

“Immediate scenic vistas from the iconic Blowing Rock natural feature and Highway 321 are

now preserved with the completion of this important 326-acre acquisition, benefitting

generations of visitors and residents of Blowing Rock, the front door to NC's High Country.”

said Tom Kenney, FCNC’s Land Protection Director. “Equally important are protected habitats

adjoining Pisgah National Forest, the large North Carolina natural area, Blowing Rock Cliffs and

the numerous springs and seeps that form as the Johns River. Downstream, these tributaries

contribute to a large supply of clean drinking water for more than two million people in Valdese,

Caldwell County, Hickory, Charlotte and beyond,” Kenney added.

The Johns River, a major tributary of the Catawba River, begins on the property, and the land

harbors a number of significant natural communities and threatened plant and animal species

documented by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program.

“Foothills Conservancy of NC is honored that the family who owned and stewarded the land for over a century gave our land trust this opportunity and entrusted us with permanently conserving

their family land in Blowing Rock,” said FCNC Executive Director Andrew Kota. “We are also

incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support and generosity from Blowing Rock community

members who rallied around our land trust to ensure the property was permanently protected for

future generations,” Kota said.

Leveraging its experience and national reputation for successfully protecting high-value

conservation projects, FCNC received substantial grant funding for this project.

“We offer our sincerest gratitude to the Stanback family, the Wilson family and the Glass

Foundation for standing behind our land trust and providing extraordinary funding support for

this project, as well as the Duke Energy Foundation, North Carolina Land and Water Fund,

Catawba-Wateree Water Management Group and Alice Zawadski Land Conservation Fund, for

grants that enabled permanent land conservation through a conservation easement. I also want to

express appreciation to three special ladies who put their hearts and souls into this project, and

didn't rest until they assured that the community of Blowing Rock was plugged into the effort –

Judy Allison, Dinny Harper Addison and Lee Harper Vason,” said Kota.

Judy Allison, Dinny Harper Addison and Lee Harper Vason were honored with FCNC's 2023

Ruby Pharr Conservationist of the Year award, the organization’s highest honor for conservation

volunteer service. In addition to the Ruby Award recipients, FCNC received an outpouring of

support from hundreds of people within the Blowing Rock community.

“As Mayor of Blowing Rock and the proprietor of the Town's namesake, The Blowing Rock, I

was very pleased when I learned the Conservancy was purchasing the area below the Blowing

Rock Attraction known as the Johns River Gorge,” said Charlie Sellers, Mayor of Blowing Rock.

“In my travels, I have visited many places that were pretty and well kept. Now, returning to those

locations, I have seen buildings out of control and very little green space. I am a proponent of

conserving land so the next generations have the ability to enjoy nature without the concerns of

over building and destroying the environment,” addedSellers.

The success of this project can be attributed to the collaborative approach that FCNC took, which

involved community stakeholders and local government. This approach proved to be essential

for the long-term health and sustainability of Blowing Rock’s natural environment.

FCNC’s Johns River Headwaters conservation preserve is not accessible to the public, and there

are no designated public access points. However, residents and visitors may enjoy views of the

property from the Blowing Rock Attraction located off US 321.

Various Authors - Dragon #53 (September 1981)

Right on the cover we get a bit of Dungeons & Dragons history, with the first of many contributions by Clyde Caldwell to the art of Dragon magazine and TSR in general. An artist who would become, together with others like Larry Elmore, eternally associated with the classical 80s period of D&D, particularly when we move towards the fantasy settings of Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms, Clyde represented a shift to a more realistic painterly style which would eventually replace the more expressionistic and cartoonish art of such greats as Erol Otus and Bill Willingham. 

On the inside there are plenty of articles of interest for D&D fans, a couple of them focus on rethinking the Monk class, very often thought of as being the worst class in first edition D&D, so the idea would be to make it a more functional class for players. There is also a new NPC class added, the Oracle, in a really long article that ,as is usual with these NPC articles in Dragon magazine, gives the reader enough information to actually make these PC classes, rather than just NPCs. 

Then there is an article on how to make your campaign world work with D&D, and more importantly in the Up on a Soapbox column we get Judith Sampson, a D&D player with cerebral palsy writing about her experience of playing D&D while having to make adjustments due to her disability, a really fascinating article and not the kind of story that Dragon focused too much on. Then we have a one off AD&D adventure which had won their module contest, Lakofka's column covering how to make doors more interesting in AD&D, and the usual Bestiary and comics entries.

Moonshine's heals keep getting countered. Hardwon kisses Moonshine to help her. Hardwon also calls Bev his little brother when Bev goes down. Paw Paw gets really sad when Moonshine's heart is frozen.

Propaganda: (anonymous) I love fights that make the characters confront what they assumed and who they are and come out stronger from in. I also love fights that leave the characters completely exhausted physically and emotionally.

Finish: none, it's a skills challenge/murder mystery

Notes: They have to convince the Tiamat jury that Onyx didn't commit regicide and solve the mystery of who did. Onyx continually flashes the jury as a bribe to solidify her points. Caldwell layers in interesting facts about what happened for people to figure out what actually occurred when the Queen died. Nyack says "Ob fucking jection" when the head guard testifies. Jens proves the final point that the princes and princesses killed their mother by attempting to dispel hair dye.

Propaganda: (anonymous) the design of this is the coolest thing i've ever seen! 5 dragons and symbolize concepts that need to be impressed and each one can be done in a diff way with diff stats for every character that is in the party. jens 8th level dispel magic to wig that woman. they get to use all their weird items. i love it so much!

Washington Wizards Move Aaron Holiday to Phoenix Suns

On February 10th, 2022, the Washington Wizards traded guard Aaron Holiday to the Phoenix Suns for cash considerations. The Wizards also received a trade exception.

Aaron Holiday became a member of the Washington Wizards when he was included in a five-team blockbuster trade where he was sent from the Indiana Pacers. The humongous deal also saw the Wizards add Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope from the Los Angeles Lakers and Spencer Dinwiddie from the Brooklyn Nets.

The Wizards also came into the 2021-22 season with a new head coach in Wes Unseld Jr. Washington went 10-3 in its first 13 games. However, the season soon headed south.

The Wizards fell to 15-15 after a 5-12 stretch. After getting to 23-21, a 1-8 moment dropped the club to 24-29. By the trade deadline, Washington went for a makeover. Davis Bertans and Dinwiddie were traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Kristaps Porzingis and Harrell was dealt to the Charlotte Hornets for Ish Smith, Vernon Carey Jr. and a second round pick.

Holiday was the final piece moved. He spent his first season in Washington in and out of the rotation. Overall, the guard appeared in 41 games (14 starts) and compiled 6.1 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 1.9 APG and 0.6 SPG in 16.2 MPG.

After the trade, Holiday assumed a backup role in Phoenix. The Suns went 19-8 after the trade deadline, finishing the 2021-22 season with an NBA-best 64-18 record. Holiday averaged 6.8 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 3.4 APG and 0.8 SPG in 16.3 MPG through 22 games.

In the playoffs, Phoenix was the first seed and faced the 36-46 New Orleans Pelicans in the first round. The opener saw Phoenix jump out to a 19-point lead at halftime. Though the Pelicans cut into the deficit in the second half, the Suns held on for a 110-99 win.

The second game was close, but New Orleans hit 17 threes and outscored Phoenix 69-53 in the second half to win 125-114. In the game, Suns star Devin Booker injured his right hamstring and would miss several games.

In Game Three, the Suns led by double digits at halftime and held a 66-53 advantage in the third quarter. The Pelicans stormed back and the rest of the contest was tight.

With the game tied with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter, Chris Paul took over. The veteran point guard scored 14 of his 28 total points during the rest of the game as Phoenix won 114-111. The fourth game saw Brandon Ingram record 30 points and Jonas Jonas Valančiūnas put up 26 points and 15 rebounds as the Pelicans won 118-103.

In Game Five, Suns forward Mikal Bridges got hot early and he finished with 31 points in a 112-97 Suns win. Booker returned for Game Six. The Pelicans led at halftime by 10 points but the Suns used a 12-5 close in the final two minutes to win 115-109 and close out the series 4-2.

Holiday played in two games and eight minutes and 14 seconds in the first round. The guard averaged 5.0 PPG and 2.0 APG in the series.

The Suns advanced to the second round where they matched up with the Dallas Mavericks and star Luka Dončić. The Suns built a 17-point lead after three quarters and withstood 45 points from Dončić in a 121-114 win.

The Suns took a 2-0 series lead after Booker and Paul combined for 58 points in a 129-109 rout. Game Three featured Dončić scoring 26 points and guard Jalen Brunson put up 28 points as Dallas won at home 103-94. The Mavericks tied the series 2-2 after a 111-101 Game Four victory.

In Game Five, Phoenix outscored Dallas 61-34 in the second half of a 110-80 blowout win. Dallas responded with a 113-86 rout in Game Six. The Mavericks never trailed in Game Seven, leading by 30 at halftime and by as much as 46 in a stunning 123-90 game.

The Suns lost and were eliminated in the second round. Holiday appeared in four semifinal games, managing 2.8 PPG and 1.3 APG in 2.9 MPG

In the offseason, Holiday became an unrestricted free agent after Phoenix decided not to tender the guard a $5.8 million qualifying offer. Holiday signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks for the veteran's minimum.

Aaron Holiday on how the trade is great in terms of location (via Arizona Republic):

"Man, it's probably one of the best things. My parents are like a 45-minute flight away now, so they could probably visit us more often. They can honestly drive if they want to. I have family here in Phoenix, my brother is now in Sacramento."

On joining the Suns:

"I was up here watching them play the [Milwaukee] Bucks last year. The atmosphere is crazy. The team is obviously really good, really talented. They were number one in the league without me, so hopefully I can keep that going. I'm just here to do my job and help the best way I can."

How he's already acclimated to Phoenix:

"Man, I'm already acclimated. I'm from the West Coast. This (Phoenix) weather is nice, reminds me of back home. It's not too hot right now."

Suns forward and new acquisition Torrey Craig on Holiday (via Arizona Republic):

"He's a defensive-minded guy. He plays like a vet as well. Plays at a good pace, and I think he'll fit in perfect with this group and what we're trying to accomplish here."

The Spindle Galaxy, C53 // AdrianoMSilva

Often confused with another Spindle Galaxy (M102), this Spindle Galaxy (NGC 3115) is a lenticular galaxy. These are intermediates between the more familiar spiral and elliptical galaxies that lack spiral arms but do feature a central bulge and disk.

Appearing edge-on to us, this galaxy is located about 32 million light years away in the constellation of Sextans, the Sextant. Discovered by William Herschel (1738-1822) in 1787, it is best observed in the spring by northern hemisphere observers.

The story of Harry Church and Mary Hammond

On May 12, 1880, Mary Emogene Hammond was born in Bolton, Warren County, New York. She would marry Harold "Harry" David Church on May 3, 1899 in Goshen, Hampshire, Massachusetts. She would then die on September 2, 1953 in East Derry, Rockingham, New Hampshire, with her husband dying in 1969. On Find A Grave, we know that they  had at least four children: Joseph, Clarence, Edith, and Georgie. But there is more to the story than this. Mary's parents were Hetabella "Hattie" Belle Mills and Hannibal T. Hammond.

In June 1869, Hattie and Hannibal had married. The following year, they boarded with Hattie's family, the Mills Family, in Chester, Warren, New York with Phebe Bibby who could be the adopted child of the couple.In 1871, their first child, Joseph, was born. Five years later, their second child, Clarence, was born. Then in 1880, Mary was born. By 1880, Hattie and Hannibal were living  in Glens Falls, Warren, New York. Hannibal was a carpenter and Dora was staying in the same household. He would due on December 14, 1886 in Cummington, Massachusetts with Cyrus W. Packard (Dora's husband) serving as an informant for his birth, death, and other information. When Hannibal died, he was age 53, 10 months, 17 days, married, dying of "consumption" (tuberculosis) and being a farmer. His parents were listed as Perry G. Hammond (born in Caldwell, NY) and Mary Ann Hammond (born in Granville, NY). He would live his last days in Cummington.

But where did this leave Hattie? Well, on December 22, 1889, three years after Hannibal's death, she married a man named Joseph Beals. Little is known of her life after this point. We do know that in 1900 she was living with her husband Joseph in Goshen Town, within Massachusetts’s Hampshire County, with Marian and Charles E. Packard, children of Dora and Cyrus, living with them, along with Edith B. Hammond, a daughter of hers from the marriage with Hannibal. Ten years later, in 1910, she was still living in Goshen but with her daughter Edith and she was widowed, evidencing Joseph Beals’s death. There was also a boarder named George A. Andrews is living with them. As such, it makes sense that she died in 1912. Her death certificate says she died of chronic vascular heart disease on Aug. 3, 1912, and says her birth date is Jan. 29, 1850, with these days treated as correct but the year totally false. This is due to the fact that the 1855 census shows her living in the household and as age 12 (meaning that she would be born in 1843), to give one example:

As such, Hattie's gravestone gives her wrong date of birth and is off by 11 years. Why the gravestone is that wrong is not known.  The gravestone is shown below:

Yet her death certificate, with information supplied by her son, Clarence (C.O. Hammond) says 1850:

The problem didn't begin in 1870, as she was described as age 25, meaning she would have been born in 1845. The 1875 census says she was 31, pegging her birth date to 1844. The same can be said of the 1880 census, which says she is age 32, pegging her birth date to 1848. Even the 1905 census says she was age 56, pegging her birth date to 1849. So, none of these censuses say that. The mystery goes on.
