Man just have the Emmy sweep ready for the Penguin. Another incredible episode from start to finish. Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell turned in another masterclass. Oz been finessing his way to the top so much, you knew he was due for an L. I’m so worried about his mom, clear death flags with her but surely Vic don’t get killed here right?? 😭 bro finally became a made man with that squid kill(totally justified) but damn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The three scenes that really stuck with me from this week’s ep is Oz convo with his mom where she seems ready to accept her fate and refuses to be an invalid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Eve and Sofia convo in the apartment. The character acting, emotion and mutual understanding that’s shown in that scene is just incredible. Sofia might have come in there with the intent to kill Eve, but after reaching a mutual understanding on Sofia’s betrayal and abuse Eve felt compelled to snitch. Honestly after what Oz has done and hiding the fact he worked for the dude that killed her girls.. yea she’s valid
Then Oz’ speech to all the rival groups. Man if I didn’t know he was full of shit he’d damn near have me fooled too 😂 incredible scene from Colin. But man that cliffhanger ending holy shit please don’t kill Vic, I know the mom prolly cooked but let my boy get out.

My oscars predictions this year is Everything Everywhere All at Once sweep. At least for best picture/best actress/best supporting actress (Stephanie Hsu imo, but maybe Jamie Lee Curtis?)/best director/best screenplay/best editing.
If Cate Blanchett wins Best actress I'll just go kill myself. No offense to her but I was not impressed by Tár and if it wins any awards I'm done.
The only performance I've actually seen for the lead actor is Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin, so I can't say much but I think they'll probably give it to Brendan Fraser. The Whale wasn't good enough to get nominated itself but I bet the idea of a Comeback King is enough to give it to someone else.
Guillermo de Toro's Pinocchio for best animated feature.

okay i need to stop talking about the oscars so quick fire opinion round
the googly eyes the EEAAO cast and crew were wearing were adorable
i would’ve liked to see banshees of inishirin pick up something (esp an oscar for colin farrell) but im also totally okay with EEAAO sweep
for once best animated picture was really stacked! i didnt see the sea beast or turning red but i loved all the other nominees and thought any one of the three could’ve taken the win
ive seen people complain that david byrne cant sing. this is true but its part of the charm
the constant slap jokes made me wish some brave soul would hit jimmy kimmel just to get him to stop
every animated picture should bring a model of their main character to award shows we cant let this die with pinocchio and marcel

Oscar Picks 2023, Part III: The Big 8
Despite a runaway expected winner for Best Picture, this promises to be an exciting Oscar year for most of the big categories. There are several hot two-horse races and some that are anyone’s game.
But just like in national elections, happenings in one place could be the sign of things to come elsewhere. Look for the Supporting Actress category early in the Ceremony to give us a sense of how things will play out for the night. A win for Jaime Lee Curtis could mean a sweep of the table for EEAAO. If Bassett or Condon wins, it may mean a more tempered night.
Tumblr media
Actor in a Leading Role
Nominees:
Austin Butler, Elvis
Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
Brendan Fraser, The Whale
Paul Mescal, Aftersun
Bill Nighy, Living
This is supposed to be Brendan Fraser’s year. But polarizing reviews for The Whale may cost him his trophy. As much as this seems to be a two-man race, any of the other three performances are highly deserving, with all but Mescal winning some piece of major hardware. I still give the edge to Fraser, as he won the SAG award and actors make up the biggest chunk of the Academy.
Who will win: Brendan Fraser
But look out for: Austin Butler
Who I’d vote for: Colin Farrell
If I could add one more: Eden Dambrine (Close). There was no way the Academy was going to recognize a teenage lead in a foreign movie, but few performances by actors of any age are as deeply moving.
Tumblr media
Actress in a Leading Role
Nominees:
Cate Blanchett, Tár
Ana de Armas, Blonde
Andrea Riseborough, To Leslie
Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Equally exciting as the Best Actor contest, this one appears to be a two-woman race between Blanchett and Yeoh. Even with their impressive résumés, both give career-best performances and have split the awards this season. I presume they’ll be the top two on most ballots. But Blanchett already has two Oscars. I think Academy voters will want to finally reward Yeoh for her exceptional career.
Who will win: Michelle Yeoh
But look out for: Cate Blanchett
Who I’d vote for: Cate Blanchett
If I could add one more: Danielle Deadwyler (Till). Where my Black women at?! Kudos to Riseborough for a strong performance and even stronger campaigning, but it did preclude the Academy from recognizing Deadwyler’s performance and the film as a whole.
Tumblr media
Actor in a Supporting Role
Nominees:
Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees of Inisherin
Brian Tyree Henry, Causeway
Judd Hirsch, The Fabelmans
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin
Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
This is one of the few sure bets of the evening. Ke Huy Quan has won almost every major award. But Keoghan’s recent victory at the BAFTAs and 3rd place ranking from the National Society of Film Critics may make an impact. Henry and Hirsch are long shots, but I wish Gleeson would have garnered more hardware for his excellent performance.
Who will win: Ke Huy Quan
But look out for: Barry Keoghan
Who I’d vote for: Brendan Gleeson
If I could add one more: Paul Dano (The Fabelmans). After so many exceptional performances in Oscar-nominated Best Pictures, what does Dano have to do to finally get a nod?
Tumblr media
Actress in a Supporting Role
Nominees:
Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Hong Chau, The Whale
Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Angela Bassett seemed a surefire choice early in awards season, but Jamie Lee Curtis has been on a tear recently. Momentum for EEAAO may just propel her to victory. And while I think Hsu’s performance was actually the more engaging and moving of the film, Academy voters are more likely to pick the veteran favorite. Chau has garnered great praise for her role in The Whale, but she’s the only real long shot here. Condon is coming off a BAFTA win and was the pick of the National Society of Film Critics.
Who will win: Jamie Lee Curtis
But look out for: Angela Bassett
Who I’d vote for: Kerry Condon
If I could add one more: Dolly De Leon (Triangle of Sadness). In her role as toilet manager turned captain, De Leon commands the screen and stimulates the moral and ethical questions the film seeks to ask of its audience.
Tumblr media
Directing
Nominees:
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Todd Field, Tár
Ruben Östlund, Triangle of Sadness
This award seems written in stone, which is sad considering the incredible depth in the category. Spielberg and Field both offer masterclasses in directing with their entries. McDonagh’s expertise as a playwright shows in his superlative storytelling. Östlund skillfully translates his political and social commentary to pictures. But the Daniels’ creativity, vision, and mastery at so many different styles makes them a shoe-in.
Who will win: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert
But look out for: Steven Spielberg
Who I’d vote for: Todd Field or Steven Spielberg
If I could add one more: Sarah Polley (Women Talking). Not merely for female representation, Polley deserves to be in this group because her film is one of the most unique, emotional, and engaging stories told on screen this year.
Tumblr media
Original Screenplay
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Fabelmans
Tár
Triangle of Sadness
This may just be my favorite category of the 2023 Oscars. The five nominees could not be more different from each other, and yet (almost) equally deserving of praise. Banshees took home the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and National Board of Review award. EEAAO won the Writers Guild, Critics’ Choice, and NY Film Critics awards. Tár was the pick of the National Society of Film Critics and LA Film Critics. I think the signs are pointing to EEAAO, though the Academy may offer this as a consolation prize to the excellent Banshees.
Who will win: Everything Everywhere All at Once
But look out for: The Banshees of Inisherin
Who I’d vote for: The Banshees of Inisherin
If I could add one more: Aftersun. Charlotte Wells’ intimate account of a father-daughter relationship manages to say so much without hitting you over the head with anything.
Tumblr media
Adapted Screenplay
Nominees
All Quiet on the Western Front
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Living
Top Gun: Maverick
Women Talking
Sarah Polley’s Women Talking is only up for two awards this year – Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. While the performances and directing deserve praise, its script is its strongest asset. I think the Academy will choose to recognize it with this award. All Quiet on the Western Front may be a spoiler, though, having just won the BAFTA and being the pick of National Board of Review back in early January. With nine nominations, it could be up for a big night. I also wouldn’t rule out Living, which has got a lot of attention recently.
Who will win: Women Talking
But look out for: All Quiet on the Western Front
Who I’d vote for: Women Talking
If I could add one more: Aftersun. Charlotte Wells’ intimate account of a father-daughter relationship manages to say so much without hitting you over the head with anything.
Tumblr media
Best Picture
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front
Avatar: The Way of Water
The Banshees of Inisherin
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Fabelmans
Tár
Top Gun: Maverick
Triangle of Sadness
Women Talking
All signs point to EEAAO. It’s won the top prize at the awards for the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, and Screen Actors Guild. But ranked choice voting in the Best Picture category can often create pathways you don’t suspect.
Top Gun: Maverick will be a popular choice among American Academy members. It’s likely to occupy that number 2 or 3 spot on a lot of ballots, which could matter if multiple rounds are needed to select a winner. The film was the top pick of the National Board of Review. But without a Best Director nod or any acting nods, the odds aren’t in its favor.
Banshees is also one that’s likely to do well on most ballots, even if it doesn’t occupy the top spot for most people. Sadly, its Best Comedy win at the Golden Globes hasn’t been followed up with any other top prizes.
All Quiet on the Western Front was the surprising BAFTA winner, but I think that has more to do with the subject matter and the importance of the First World War to British audiences. It’s a powerful film, but I think the Academy will reward it with International Feature.
Spielberg’s The Fabelmans had a great early push with a Golden Globe win for Best Drama, but support has fizzled as it’s made way for EEAAO in recent award shows.
Tár has been the favorite of most critics, it seems, topping the list for the National Society of Film Critics, NY Critics, and LA Critics (tied with EEAAO).
With 8 nominations, Elvis may have an outside chance, especially if Butler ends up winning Best Actor.
The other films in this category are all long shots for whom the nomination is the prize.
Who will win: Everything Everywhere All at Once
But look out for: Top Gun: Maverick
Who I’d vote for: Tár
If I could add one more: Close. Belgium’s entry for Best International Feature deserved much more recognition at the Oscars, including a Best Actor and Best Picture nomination.
---
That's it for this year's Oscar picks! Thanks for joining me. Enjoy the show!

final oscar predictions
95th Academy Awards will happen on March 12th, so here are my unnecessarily detailed predictions for winners in the above-the-line categories, in the order of likelihood, based on the precursors, analysis, hopediction, and pure vibes:
Best Original Screenplay
1. Everything Everywhere All at Once
2. Tar
3. The Banshees of Inisherin
4. The Fabelmans
5. Triangle of Sadness
Early in the season many people thought that EEAAO would be too weird and comedic for the relatively conservative Academy voters but by now it’s clear that it was an unnecessary worry and this movie is pretty much universally loved. It’s going to win at minimum 4 awards of the 11 it’s nominated for and might do a full sweep that is rare with oscars nowadays. I’ve heard many voters also really, really liked Tar so i think it’s the second competitor.
Best Adapted Screenplay
1. All Quiet on the Western Front
2. Women Talking
3. Top Gun: Maverick
4. Glass Onion
5. Living
There is apparently a lot of support for Women Talking among the voters but i’m slightly leaning toward AQotWF based mostly just on hunch and also just because of personal bias because i didn’t like Women Talking myself lol.
Best Director
1. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (EEAAO)
2. Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Todd Field (Tar)
4. Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans)
5. Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness)
The Daniels won the top prize at the DGA awards which is historically a very strong predictor for the Best Director at Oscars. Everyone else except Ostlund still has a chance though.
Best Actor
1. Austin Butler (Elvis)
2. Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
3. Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
4. Bill Nighy (Living)
5. Paul Mescal (Aftersun)
My two personal favorites, Farrell and Mescal, are unlikely to win because their performances were very subtle and internal and the Academy tends to think “best acting” means “most acting”. The precursors and the Academy’s well-known biopic obsession point toward Butler likely being the winner, but Fraser is beloved and has a great comeback narrative which could help him.
Best Actress
1. Michelle Yeoh (EEAAO)
2. Cate Blanchett (Tar)
3. Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie)
4. Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans)
5. Ana de Armas (Blonde)
This is going to be between Blanchett and Yeoh, whose performances are so above the rest of the competition it’s not even funny. I would say it’s genuinely 50/50 coin toss. I’m putting Yeoh first because i personally want her to win, Blanchett gave arguably one of the best performances of her career but she already has two oscars and will probably get more in the future. Yeoh doesn’t have similar opportunities. I’m just praying there won’t be Riseborough upset...
Best Supporting Actor
1. Ke Huy Quan (EEAAO)
2. Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin)
4. Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway)
5. Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans)
Quan is practically 100% locked. He’s been absolutely steamrolling it on unprecedented level through the whole award season. If anyone else wins i’ll eat my hat.
Best Supporting Actress
1. Jamie Lee Curtis (EEAAO)
2. Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
4. Hong Chau (The Whale)
5. Stephanie Hsu (EEAAO)
The most difficult category to predict. I could see any one of this women winning - except my and many other’s favorite, Hsu. It’s unfortunately clear she’s an afterthought for the Academy voters, if even that. Whether it’s racism or their bias against young and new actors they don’t seem to think much about her performance. I’m leaning towards JLC over Condon and Bassett. She’s a well-established and beloved actress in a beloved movie, she has the narrative, she won the SAG, she’s been campaigning like crazy, and the voters seem to REALLY love her performance. I know it will be absolute shitstorm if she wins. I actually really liked her performance in EEAAO, i think it had a lot of charm and heart, was transformative without prosthetics, and it was also genuinely supporting performance when lots of supporting nominations are nowadays actually co-leads through category fraud. It’s just that i liked Hsu’s performance even more, and the Academy completely ignoring her in favor of JLCn makes it very blatant that they favor white and well-connected actors.
Best Picture
1. Everything Everywhere All at Once
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
3. Top Gun: Maverick
4. Tar
5. All Quiet on the Western Front
6. Elvis
7. Avatar: The Way of the Water
8. The Fabelmans
9. Women Talking
10. Triangle of Sadness
EEAAO has beat all the odds and become the very likely winner after winning DGA, PGA and SAG. The only others i think have a legit chance are Banshees, Top Gun and Tar. The Fabelmans shows up high in many lists but to me it seems clear it doesn’t have much passion. Elvis and Avatar are crowdpleasers but may not appeal to more ‘highbrow’ voters. AQotWF did well at BAFTAs but american voters are not as enthusiastic. EEAAO it is.

Another actual surprise for me. I would have expected a domestic flick to pick up the award given the possibilities. Not a bad choice for the win, but Elvis and Babylon both had much greater scope. Perhaps they split the vote.

My Choice: Top Gun Winner: Top Gun

Better get my predictions down before the ceremony starts.
EEAAO sweeps with Best Pic, Best Directors, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress (it's Jamie Lee's but it should really go to Stephanie), Best Supporting Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.
The Whale for Best Actor.
Women Talking for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio for Best Animated Film.
The rest I'm not sure. In my ideal world, Colin Farrell would win Best Actor, but Hollywood loves comeback stories and Brendan won the SAG (and the Globe), so it's not really a contest anymore.

Behind the Oscar Nomination Record and Amazing Year on Screen – The Hollywood Reporter
When the 2023 BAFTA nominations were unveiled on Jan. 19, one of the main talking points — alongside the standout success of All Quiet on the Western Front — was the domination of Ireland.  The 10 nominations amassed by Martin McDonagh’s awards season favorite The Banshees of Inisherin included a clean sweep of the performance categories, with the film’s four main cast — Colin Farrell, Brendan…

Gladiator!
i'm certain that sag is going to be brendan fraser michelle yeoh ke huy quan and angela bassett, whereas i see an inisherin sweep at bafta with colin farrell brendon gleeson and kerry condon. as for le oscars i feel like we're going to get some surprise wins. i sincerely believe todd field is going to win director, and i have this feeling that picture and lead actress are going to be split between tar and eeaao, and i'm leaning more towards cate blanchett and eeaao. for supporting actress i originally predicted a surprise win for dolly de leon before nominations were announced. well she didn't get nominated, but i'm still going to predict a surprise win, this time for stephanie hsu. and i want to predict a surprise win in supporting actor too but there's no way stephanie hsu wins and ke huy quan loses. and then there's animated feature. obviously guillermo del toro's pinocchio has been winning at every other award show and it stands a good chance at the oscars, but i think turning red stands its best chance at the oscars since the academy has a soft spot for pixar.
but also i literally haven't seen any of these movies.
well except for the animated ones and honestly i liked turning red much better than gdt pinocchio.
besides that the only nominated movies i've seen are fkn elvis, blonde, and glass onion, so i literally don't know what i'm talking about.

The Banshees of Inisherin
As quietly devastating a movie as I've seen in a long time as Martin McDonagh delivers a thoughtful and heartbreaking examination on aging and friendship.
The core conflict is an existential conundrum that I've long contemplated in the age of social media's dominance: How long are friendships meant to last? As platforms like Facebook or Twitter become one of the key ways we (re)connect and communicate with people, it can sometimes be challenging to simply move on. It used to be, you'd meet someone, develop a friendship, and then time and age and even distance would mean that those relationships would simply run their course as you become different people with different goals and priorities. Drifting apart is a natural part of our evolution as humans. Sometimes it's sudden, sometimes it's natural, sometimes it happens over the course of years. But now that anyone from any point in your life can ostensibly hop back into it, how does that affect our natural inclination to let some relationships remain and others fade? Obviously individuals have the ability to block or mute or otherwise ignore people on social media, but (from my experience, at least) there is some modicum of expectation that you be courteous or welcoming to people who are reaching out in a friendly, good faith manner.
It feels harder than ever to simply move on and be a person different from what others want or expect of the person they know. That is the burden shared by both Colm (Brendan Gleeson) and Padraic (Colin Farrel). Colm is weary of his, apparently longstanding, friendship with Padraic. Colm, bogged by the existential angst that he'll be forgotten in the decades to come, wants to write and teach music and leave behind his "boring" friendship with Padraic.
Padraic, however, cannot fathom why his best friend would turn on a dime. The resulting feud is at times hilarious, at times frightening, but always heartbreaking. Gleeson and Farrell are a tremendous pair here, Farrell in particular delivering what may be the most heart-wrenching performance of his career thus far.
McDonagh understands the difficulty in wanting to move on. He groks the necessity of it for some people. But even he feels unable to answer the question of how to navigate this conundrum in a way that leaves all involved without lasting scars. We as humans are meant to connect, to give our laughter and friendship and love to others. What is the point of our existence without these things, but at what cost? What is the cost of that need and how long must we remain in debt to it before society says we're allowed to move on? There is a balance to be found, but that balance is illusive at best, McDonagh says.
My wife expressed relief at having not watched this with me due to its elegiac tone and conclusion. In a way I can't blame her. And yet this movie is a perfect example of the strange sort of comfort I can find in a story of this sort. You ache for these two men whose lives are in varying ways torn asunder, both through their own actions and the reactions of the other. And yet it is an odd comfort to know that others struggle in the same way with relationships, with identity, with unmet desire and the inherent sadness that can often sweep its way through a life. That is what McDonagh expresses so well in this film and for that alone I am grateful for it.
