it might be because I'm aroace and can't help but project on my favorite little pookie bears 24/7 but like....

not platonic kunidazai, just like, they're dating but they don't have sex, they don't want sex, it's not something that comes up cause they just mutually have their reasons to not want/need it.

and that's not to say they're never intimate with one another, it's just that their intimacy is different. to them, intimacy is taking naps in each others arms, no bandage's, just a blanket and each other's embrace. intimacy is Kunikida washing Dazai's hair while they sit tangled up on the floor of the tub. intimacy is kissing each other so so softly, over scars and marks and phantom pains, over bad memories and pleasant reminders. Intimacy is sharing a cup of coffee in the office. intimacy is mending each other's wounds. intimacy is skin on skin, trusting one another not to hurt, not to take, not to use. Intimacy is talking long into the night, close enough to hear the faintest of whispers, talking about life, their pasts, their fears, their aspirations.

it's all intimacy to them, they don't need sex. one doesn't need it and one doesn't want it ever again, and that's fine, they find their own ways to share that vulnerable space both crave to fill.

I wish there was a genre of fanfic (& general fiction) for like. Writing mundane things like documents that would exist within a story’s world. I yearn so badly to read academic papers written by wizards, or like a list of insurance claims in a superhero story

Truly most infuriating aspect of being audhd in the workplace is interviewing someone who is clearly on various spectrums like you and being the only person who can tell and having no problems with them or their vibe and everyone else is like "wow get a load of this blowhard what a weirdo"

actually, let me contextualize this a little: I'm talking about a specific stage in your writing where you're feeling ready to put your work out there! a lot of writing advice is aimed at beginner writers or people who otherwise aren't at the "putting work out there" stage and still need to develop more basic skills. I absolutely encourage everyone to write for fun and work on their passion project--hell, if you have a final draft already, I wouldn't even discourage you from publishing (self, trad, whatever)

BUT ☝️

let's take a look at the video game developers I that helped me form this advice: Toby Fox and Omocat.

(full disclosure, I could have absorbed this opinion from a video essay I liked, or heard it from an author, but I wholeheartedly stand by it)

for those of you who don't know, they are respectively the creators of Undertale, a video game about a child who falls down a mountain into a world of monsters, and Omori, a (much more adult and less well known) video game about a teenage hikikomori (essentially an profoundly socially withdrawn person who purposefully isolates from all social relationships and seldom leaves their room) and the fantasies he engages with to avoid the extreme stress and loneliness of his life.

Omori is an alright video game. it has interesting themes, but tends to drag and is oddly paced. Undertale widely considered to be one of the best indie videogames of all time, and is certainly one of the most popular. Omori took six and a half years to make, and was frequently accused of being a scam, rife with drama; Undertale took under 3 years, and had minimal upsets.

the difference between the two? Omori was a passion project. Undertale was the project its creator decided to make before his passion project so he could learn the ropes.

here's the big three things that this advice does for writers:

one, you learn the process. advertising's hard. publishing is hard. figuring out the markets, what appeals, and what you need to do is hard! if you're an indie developer you have several more jobs you need to work on and skills to improve. doing ALL OF THAT while fretting over your passion project being Perfect is a recipe for burnout.

two, you need to learn to take feedback. as an early writer, any feedback but positive is poisonous (incidentally why getting into art is way easier as a kid; you're not held up to high standards and you're ideally just having fun) - but once you cross the threshold into preparing your stuff for an audience, feedback starts becoming much more important. sometimes you need to hear that your idea that you thought was really cool sucked. feedback is what elevates good art to great art, in my opinion. and it's really really hard to hear when it's something you hold close to your heart.

three, and this is much more philosophical; you learn to let go. this is Advanced Art stuff - like any parent, once you put that piece of yourself out there, it is no longer yours. it grows and morphs into something much bigger than you that is held in the minds of hundreds or thousands of people, potentially across years or decades - or centuries for a select few. time for some potentially unpopular opinions, but I am of the firm belief that once a piece is out there, the artist should not comment on or try to defend the intentions of a piece. you had plenty of time to refine your piece during development, now it's time to see if it stands on its own. it's hard to watch this happen to your passion project, and you have a better chance of portraying exactly what you want to say if you practice beforehand.

if I have to give any advice for aspiring writers (and video game developers actually), it's don't make your first published work your baby. hang onto your baby. add to it if you want. refine it a dozen times over. but literally just put something else out there and use what you learn from that for your passion project
