Oh I have. So many thoughts. You asking abt it even made me get up off my ass and draw again. Putting everything under the cut to avoid having a mile long post.

When I first had the idea I really struggled on who was a weapon/meister but after deciding on wanting to pair ruikasa/emunene up I was like tsukasa and emu need to be the meisters bc 1) it fits with them being the founding duo of wxs 2) I really wanted nene to be a gun 3) fitting tsukasa’s goals into the SE universe worked better if he was a meister. I elected to make rui a whip first and then I realized I could fit a bloodborne reference in there and reference becoming potatoes with the cane. I’m not entirely satisfied w the first pass at designs for the universe (not super close to the SE aesthetic, I cannot draw guns, I’m not very good at character design, etc) but i kind of tried to pull inspiration from:

- tsukasa and emu’s happy Phoenix costumes (split colors on tsukasa’s coat, tsukasa’s boots, the corset/bell sleeves/little cape thingie for emu)

- for tsukasa specifically: piano (b&w colors and stupid long coat tails), his second wxs costume

- emu: bc I drew her last and it was getting late I did less searching and more winging it but I did try to combine the style of her wxs costumes (shoes, dress, striped socks) & general darker Lolita (for lack of a better word) fashion.

- nene: her gaming event card (weird energy ball device thing? Which I would imagine functions similar to dtk’s shooting soul wave lengths thru the thompsons)

- rui: his ugly ass coat (fond) he wears as his first wxs costume. Also becoming potatoes cane handle thing. Him being a trick weapon (bloodborne term, essentially a weapon that can switch between two forms) also kind of lines up w him being a tech genius.

Ok done talking abt the designs onto the in universe stuff

- not basing any au story off the soul eater plot bc it didn’t work out very well (too many pjsk characters) (going with the main story wxs plot w a soul eater spin. Kinda. Gonna have to think abt that a bit.) but if I did mafuyu > crona, miku & the kagamines > dtk and the thompsons. Would that make cfm lord death. Emu would fill a similar role to maka with mafuyu in that situation but in general (besides the surface level similarities btwn tsukasa and black star) nene is too different from soul, emu is way too different from maka, and rui is literally NOTHING like tsubaki so I can’t justify just swapping out emunene/tsukasa with soul&maka/black star&tsubaki. No equivalent to that fucking cat in this universe. & the pjsk characters get to wear clothes when they’re in the weird place weapons’s bodies go when they’re transformed.

- idk maybe the regular soul eater plot is happening/will happen/has happened but this is the Japan branch (oceania branch in canon?).

- vocaloids are professors (not the kagamines. Forever babies.) but if there needs to be a lord death equivalent making that miku would be so funny. Also the normal vocaloid personalities and not the WXS ones for conveniences sake. Uhhh first thoughts for M/W would be meister miku, weapon meiko, meister kaito, luka can go either way tbh, kagamines are both weapons but are each other’s meister.

- similar to how rui did shows on his own for a really long time I think he was his own meister for a while (like Justin Law was). He doesn’t have many souls bc dwma in this universe at least pretends to give a fuck abt student safety so they don’t want to send him out alone on anything dangerous (despite his talent) and he can’t resonate soul wave lengths with most ppl bc they don’t get him. He ended up giving up on finding a meister when he was younger bc of this & just worked really hard on his own. He experiences a similar isolation from his peers that dtk did (ppl find him intimidating/envy at his skill/etc).

- equivalent of him transferring in to kamikou (? Spelling) second year is the kamishiros spending ~10 years in America. He’s still childhood friends w nene he just moved away after they drifted apart and then came back. Mizuki probably did something similar just 2 keep the mizuki & rui connection still there.

- tsukasa’s SE universe goal is to be the best meister - he wants to protect & help people (inspired by saki. I’ll get to that) but the equivalent of tsukasa forgetting he wanted to make ppl smile & believing he just wanted fame would be tsukasa believing he wants to be the best meister for fame/power.

- saki’s chronic illness is a result of black blood due to an incident w a kishin egg monster when she was younger. I think she would be a weapon but along with the canon typical chronic illness symptoms (not erasing those) she struggles for a long time w controlling her ability to change in and out of weapon form. Tsukasa & her *could* have been a m/w pair & have compatible soul wave lengths but 1) he’s overprotective and I think he realized he would not be able to fight without being too scared of getting her hurt 2) saki’s illness means she can’t really enroll in the dwma (yet. She gets there eventually.)

- nene was in the not classes before the plot picks up bc she didn’t think she had what it took to be a weapon. In universe equivalent to her forgetting her lines would maybe be freezing when she was supposed to transform during an important test when she was younger? Not baby age like in canon (bc I know the DWMA likes child soldiers but 7ish is a bit much even for them) but old enough to be taking classes & old enough to be put into not classes as a result. Im not reading SE NOT! to understand how those classes work though so thank god she gets out of those classes

- nene *is* a really powerful weapon she just lacks the confidence and struggles to resonate with people (& unlike rui she can’t wield herself)

- on that note emu can resonate with just about anyone but she hasn’t found anyone that felt right yet, and Tsukasa needs someone who can keep up w the intensity of his soul wave length and hasn’t found anyone who can do that yet.

- ^ similar to tsukasa being a piano prodigy or whatever in canon tsukasa *is* a really good meister, he just needs a really good weapon. Bc his peers would need more training to get to that level

- I toyed with making emu dtk adjacent (daughter of death) (bc PXL -> DWMA) but that would be too complicated with her brothers/dad/grandpa so I disregarded it. Maybe I’ll come back to it. I think it would make more sense for emu to come from a long line of really talented meisters so she grew up training for the job and running around the dwma.

- emu approaches tsukasa and is like we should work together!!! We’ll do better on missions and be able to take down harder kishin & maybe witches!! & he’s like sure why not every star needs a sidekick (obnoxious laugh) even though emu could kick his ass without breaking a sweat (in line with canon). & like the angel she is emu is like (ignores his pre main story dickheadedness) wonderhoy!! (Deathhoy?) okie dokie we need to find weapon partners then!! (bodily drags him to class)

- tsukasa sees rui training on his own and is like wow he’s really talented! Fitting for a future star like me! & approaches him to ask if they can pair up. Rui is like on the condition that you can find my friend a partner in your class (wants nene out of the not classes bc he thinks she’s far beyond that skill level). Emu jumps on the idea and is introduced to nene who is placed in the higher level courses to accommodate this partnership. Idc if that can’t happen in SE canon I think the Otoris have a lot of sway and any potential issues w nene being less powerful (not the case but it’s the assumption made abt not students) can be made up by emu’s skill.

- emu is instantly very taken with nene and they resonate well. I know what u are dot jpg. Rui & tsukasa can resonate but struggle to unlock their full potential (similar to soul and maka struggling with using the witch hunter form) bc tsukasa needs to realize what his real motivations are.

- tsukasa assumes nene has a low skill level at first (similar to his issues w nenerobo. God I wish I could think of a way to fit nenerobo in this au. sorry nenerobo) but is proven wrong when emu wields her.

- equivalent to the climax of the wxs main story in this is nene freezing again during an important mission and the group losing an important target -> tsukasa gets mad and yells at her -> rui fights w tsukasa over this and tells him that he’ll never be a good meister if he cares more about fame and power than people.

- tsukasa chats w the death scythe kaito & realizes the Error Of His Ways -> emu is considering dropping out bc she feels that she fucked up all of their futures as weapons/meisters by putting this into motion but tsukasa has the heart to heart with emu and they agree to continue being a team -> emu and nene partner back up -> they approach rui who has gone back to working solo and he refuses to partner back up w tsukasa

- idk what a good equivalent to the lonely alchemist show would be. Tsukasa and rui need to resonate & work together to help emunene because they’re in peril or something? & rui through the resonance realizes that tsukasa is genuine? Some sort of hand wavey plot device is used to resolve everything.

- I think that emu & rui and nene & tsukasa are also able to resonate and they do occasionally switch it up just for funsies. Emu and rui bc they just get along very well and nene & tsukasa argue with each other but can still function as a team.

- I don’t think that rui & nene can resonate because. Put down the pitchforks please. *Because* similar to their dynamic in pjsk despite their bond and their care for each other there’s a lot of baggage that needs to be worked through. Too many things left unsaid. Etc. they could probably achieve resonance later on but there’s not really a need to given that they’re both weapons and both have meisters.

- Rui thinks it’s a great training exercise to fight tsukasa “how do you expect to get better if you don’t try fighting against a weapon without a weapon… I’m just trying to help you… (fake crying)” “I’m already good at fighting without a weapon!! This is never going to be relevant knowledge anyways!!! You just want to fight me because you think it’s fun!!!!!!” “(switching manipulation tactics) Someone who wants to be a star would want to be prepared for any situation no matter how small the chance is of it happening” “hm…that’s true… ok let’s do it!!”

- cut to them in the nurses office. This is a weekly occurrence.

- emu also thinks it’s good practice to use tsukasa as moving target practice but this is less dangerous and more just continuing tsukasa’s never ending torment (he is a willing participant in said torment mind you)

- like in canon emu pulls nene out of her shell and hypes her up constantly which is huge in getting nene to have more confidence in herself and her abilities. It’s also incredibly helpful to have a meister who will never judge her for freezing and will always meet her halfway.

- also like in canon nene is very helpful with reeling emu in. She’s a very helpful voice of reason/impulse control but one that understands that even if emu’s ideas are unconventional they still have merit (even if they need to be refined a little)

- similar to the soul eater main cast having the self preservation skills of very small stupid suicidal animals hell bent on getting themselves injured or killed (Liz excluded), emu and Tsukasa are very prone to charging in to a situation w/out thinking. Tsukasa is more reasonable but unfortunately his weapon parter is not and rui usually cajoles tsukasa into doing stupid shit. Nene is suffering.

- maybe someday I’ll design rui & nene if I ever go back and refine these designs but I’m really lazy.

- not really sure how I would go around incorporating the wxs arcs into the soul eater universe with regards to PXL selling out and stuff. Making peace with the witches maybe? Something will probably come to me eventually.

- unlike atsushi ohkubo I’m not a terminally horny freak so there’s zero weird shit in this au.

- initial thoughts on the other units: minori(w)/haruka(weapon that chooses to be a meister) + airi(m)/shizuku(w), kohane(m)/an(w) + toya(weapon who was trained as a meister before deciding to be a weapon)/akito(m), mafuyu(m)/kanade(weapon… don’t make her exercise) + mizuki(w)/ena(m), leoneed swaps pairs frequently but shiho & izuka are meisters + saki and honami are weapons. Open to debate for most of these I haven’t given them much thought.

gatekeeping in general is annoying but vocaloid gatekeeping in particular gets me riled up because like. i remember when i surfed through the comments of the vocaloid unpopular opinions page on instagram and there would be an occasional Hot Take on these new young vocaloid fans that don't know much about vocaloid and therefore are not reeeaaally vocaloid fans.

which is like... yeah a lot of new fans make a lot of rookie mistakes and have some admittedly dumb misconceptions, but i feel like a LOT of older/veteran vocaloid fans were also like that when they first arrived 😭 vocaloid is a bit different from what a fandom is typically formed around yknow. its a broad category of tools and music and art and such, it's so.. non-central if that makes sense? so of course it would be confusing to a completely fresh new fan. im pretty sure thats why "is vocaloid an anime" is such a common question cuz new fans are trying to figure out What All Of This Is.

one "hot take" that really annoyed me was one that was like, "you're not really a vocaloid fan if you think miku/the six crypton vocaloids are the only ones that exist. you have to know gumi or flower or fukase at the very least!" NO!!! CUT IT OUT!! listen. i feel like the reason why a good chunk of fans might think miku and her friends (or even just miku) are the only vocaloids is because theyre everywhere!!! it goes without saying that miku is the most popular character. so, of course she appears in a lot of official vocaloid media, and CFM would throw in their own characters with her while they're at it. the concerts, merchandise, the games... they get the most cuz theyre the most popular, and probably the main media that new fans are exposed to when getting into vocaloid. im not surprised that it gives them a bit of tunnel vision when it comes to the very wide array of voicebanks and characters in vocaloid alone.

the video games in particular probably served as an introduction to vocaloid for a lot of people, myself included. i watched those project diva mvs soooo much (exposed me to many classic hits, which need i remind you primarily feature miku lol), and the project diva games only had the crypton 6. for a while, because of my exposure to vocaloid through project diva, i also thought the main 6 were the only ones. i remember when i was watching a trailer for project mirari dx on my 3ds, and one of the selling points in the trailer was like, "introducing... gumi!" (in reference to how gumi was a guest character in those games). and from that i genuinely thought gumi was a new vocaloid.

this also translates to how some ppl on that unpopular opinion page would sometimes speak about project sekai fans, aka the youngsters that are getting into vocaloid through the hot new mobile game and are posting about it on tiktok and whatnot. "aaa but they'll probably only think miku and her friends are the only ones!!" the project diva problem repackaged for a new generation i guess. at least project sekai actually includes music that features other voicebanks (gumi, flower, yuki, and ia to name some). sure, theyre not shown outright, but it's a lot better than project diva which exclusively had music with the crypton voicebanks. again, this is not a new problem 😭 (i mean, i guess ive also heard "aaa but some proseka fans think the ocs are vocaloids tooo" ...so?? that can be pretty easily explained away. who cares)

like let's be real... new fans having cringe misconceptions about vocaloid is not new at all. not every fan is going to be equipped with the vocaloid bible when they start investigating what all this hatsune miku business is after playing project sekai. some mistakes feel dumb, but the cool thing about dumb misconceptions is that theyre pretty easy to clear up when you actually explain things rather than shun baby fans completely.

ok im done rambling now. maybe this is a very specific and not at all widespread thought and my brain just got fried from looking at an instagram comment section. it happens sometimes. ive just been thinking about those specific comments and the more i thought about them the more it pissed me off lmao.

objectively, i think yura seeing omiyn kiss would cause WAY more drama and confusion amongst the four of them. GHOST HUNTERS AU HEADCANONS

A series of headcanons to create an overarching universe for the Ghost Hunters. because legit i couldn't think of a fic. Everything's the same, except for Smosh started as a channel devoted to everything supernatural and mysterious. Ian and Anthony created it to discuss supernatural happenings. It later extended, and instead of just being a weekly a talk show hosted by Ian and Anthony, it branched out into Supernatural Investigation Channel, (Smoshernatural), run by the Games crew, and much later a True Crime channel, (Smosh True Crime), run by the quintessential Smosh squad. After Anthony left the company, Ian moved to work behind the scene. He frequently guest stars, but not as much as he used to. Smosh True Crime The True Crime gang consists of the Smosh Squad, but in a somewhat detective form. They write and produce episode independently of one another, and most people recognize the styles of each member. The channel has three different running shows, Conspiracy!, which is conspiracy theory show written, directed and hosted by Noah; The Lab, a show about crime scene investigation/clean up and such; as well as a Q&A show hosted by a rotating cast called Visiting Hours. There is a running event every April Fool’s where the channel releases a fake True Crime case that parodies their own style, and is focused on a joke made from one of their videos throughout the year. Some of these have been videos have been, Shayne’s gruesome murder following the destruction of Damien’s golden cat, (which in this instance was a cat totem that Damien keeps on his desk on the Smoshernatural version of ‘Visiting Hours’); a Video on the cryptid CFM, or the strange creature known as Courtney Freaking Miller; and a video on the ‘disappearance of Anthony’, which aired on the April Fool’s after he left the channel. Smoshernatural It was originally hosted by Ian, Anthony, Joven, Lasercorn, Sohinki and Mari, and they would go around to different locations investigating, and bonded as a group. After some time, it was whittled down to the group of four (Joven, Lasercorn, Sohinki and Mari), with the addition of Wes, who is their fearless cameraman who became popular within the fandom for literally never freaking out, no matter what creepy location they’re in. Boze and Damien ran their own channel that focused on the spiritual side of the supernatural. Their channel was bought by Smosh, and the two were added to the cast, which created a new element that the show had never had before. Damien’s a medium, and there have been several bits based around Boze making fun of him for it. Boze herself works with a more summoning aspect, and works with portals and ouija boards. The channel has three shows as well, with Smoshernatural being their main pull and focus. It follows the gang to different locations to look for evidence, and it usually ends with one of them trying to get themselves possessed. Cryptid Cases is hosted by Mari and Joven, and focuses in on all things alien, cryptid, and basically anything that’s not ghost oriented, (the set is often crashed by Lasercorn wearing a tinfoil hat). The final show is a slight copy of Visiting Hours, and acts as a Q&A for the Smoshernatural channel. Coroner’s Report is hosted mainly by Damien, but it almost always has guests. Miscellaneous Headcanons - Boze has called the ghosts ‘little bitches’ more than 40 times, her record in a single episode is 13. - Lasercorn is a member of the ‘Tin Foil Hat Club’, and in all of the alien Cryptid cases, he wears his green morph suit, a pair of alien sunglasses and a tinfoil hat that grows throughout the course of the episode. - The True Crime Squad and the Smoshernatural crew have switched channels once, and had each of the Smoshernatural kids produce a True Crime episode, while they sent the True Crime squad to Waverly Sanitorium, a place even Sohinki said creeped him out, for an investigation. Needless to say, those videos have scored highly among fans, though the squad has said that they would never do it again. - Sohinki holds the record for the most times asking to be possessed, which was used as the basis for an April Fool’s episode. - Despite the fact that Damien is a medium, Joven has actually had the most experience with ghosts. The house he grew up is, by his claims, is very haunted. He, and Damien, have confirmed that there are five ghosts that live on the property, which is a farmhouse that was owned by his great-grandparents. The ghosts in the house consist of a ghost cat, a ghost dog, both of Joven’s grandparent who passed in the house, and a soldier believed to have been buried on the property. Joven has claimed to have seen apparitions of all of these, most notably the soldier, who walks the grounds during storms, banging on the front door and back doors to try to get people to let him in. They have done an episode on the house, but only managed to get some sketchy audio recordings, though both Damien and Boze believe that there are presences in the house. - Wes is the fearless cameraman, and is one of the only people on the Smosh team, besides Noah, who doesn’t believe in ghosts. He says that he ‘got close’ to believing while they were at the Sallie House a few years back, but he blames it on the nervous energy that was in the air, and that fact that he was sick. - Shayne and Damien are best friends, and met on the set of a True Crime special that tried to solve old cases by talking to the dead. They remained friends afterwards, and Damien and Shayne were both featured on the other’s respective channel before Damien was hired by Smosh. - Courtney holds the current record for the most viewed video on the True Crime channel. She re-enacted the murder of a young starlet in a film noir style, compete with a grizzled narrator, and stunning visuals in black and white. Courtney was praised for her use of the color red, which accented the blood, the woman’s lipstick, her dress, the red of a stop sign, and a car. The whole endeavor took her three months. - Keith is known for his artistic, jagged style, and most of his videos are completely animated. He focuses on the deaths of artists, which is exemplified by the kinds of visuals and music he uses. His art style is well known, and has improved during the years he’s worked for the company. His first video, which was his first time animating, is now used as a meme in the fandom. - Though Mari believes in ghosts, cryptids are her real passion. She started Cryptid Cases, and is the main host, appearing in all of the videos, unlike Joven, who is switched out for other Smosh members who better suit the episode content, (aliens for Lasercorn, angels and light beings for Damien, the devil and demons for Boze). There is a running joke that Mari is secretly a shape shifting cryptid, due to several strange photos that the cast has taken over the years that don’t quite look like them, and in reality it’s actually Mari slowly learning their form to take their place. She has yet to deny this fact. - Unlike most of the cast, Noah is very into conspiracy theories, and follows the stories of the dark web very closely. He created his show, Conspiracy! to shine a light on some of these topics, and had released a few before his show was put on semi-hiatus. Noah has said that he created enough to take it off hiatus for the next few months, but that some of them could’ve gotten him in trouble because of where he got his information. He has brought on guests for a few episodes, but they’re mostly just Shayne, who also shares an interest in conspiracy theories. - Joven has had a ghost hit on him, twice. - One of the oldest and most beloved jokes of the fandom and the cast is the theory that Olivia might be an immortal. The joke started when a twitter user tweeted at Olivia with a photograph of her great-grandmother that looked strangely like her. Olivia replied with a very vague tweet that prompted the entirety of the fandom to start going through a deep dive, and actually found several other photos that looked like they could’ve been of Olivia. It has been referenced in several videos, but Olivia has said nothing helpful to her case when the topic comes up. - Sohinki is known for his love of mothman, and he has confirmed that he owns a mothman body pillow as well as several mothman t-shirts and at least one replica of the silver mothman statue. - Boze once had her phone go haywire after using an ouija board to curse someone through her phone. - Wes, in an episode of Coroner’s Report, has said that the scaredest he’s ever been was when they were filming an episode at a haunted cabin in Wisconsin, and that he believes there were eyes watching him in the woods. and that's kinda it so far. hopefully i'll add to this, and feel free to add some stuff yourself, or use it for a fic, i'd cry happy, happy tears. As you can tell I had two failures, both of them pretty major. I'll cover them a little farther down.

Starting off, these are the goals I had in mind when building this machine: First and foremost, I wanted the best performance in flight simulators and CAD/CAM software that I could justify spending for. I wanted perfect snappiness in Windows, MS Office, and web browsers. Second, I wanted longevity. Third, silence. I'd say this build achieved all of those things... but I have a few warnings for people looking to build a rig with a similar mindset.

I had to make multiple upgrades to the machine for it to keep up with the expanding RAM, VRAM, and storage requirements as sims like DCS got extra content and released updates with power-hungry graphics improvements. Also I may have purchased a much larger monitor and a VR headset... sorry 780.

If you have to skimp on things, don't skimp on the CPU, motherboard, or PSU. Although I have had the urge to get an M.2 SSD and upgrade my CPU for some time now (although really it's still keeping up perfectly fine), the fact that my current motherboard and RAM will also need to be replaced makes that unjustifiable. At this moment, for me to upgrade to a i7-8700k and an M.2 without losing RAM would cost about $1,200. Totally out of the ballpark.

Expect to have failures and do maintenance. I was lucky and had no DOA parts in the build, and the thing ran absolutely flawlessly for years. However about 5 years into the life of the machine, the 1TB storage drive suffered a soft failure. I noticed obvious performance issues, and with drive health monitoring software open I watched it slowly die as I attempted to transfer all the files I wanted elsewhere. I got everything important, but shit. You know the saying that while SSDs have a built-in service life, HDDs either fail within the first couple years or last until obsolescence? Ahhh... not in my experience. Anything I build from now on will probably be all-SSD.

(3 cont'd) As for the 1080 that died, that was much more dramatic. I'm flying along in the sublime DCS F/A-18C recreating Mongo's MiG-21 shootdown in the Gulf War when all at once the computer instantly powers off with a pop and the screen goes black. I'm thinking "...power outage?" until I smell it – something let the smoke out. After a postmortem I decide the smell had to have come from the GPU. So I throw in the old 780 and it boots up – but no video output. Shit. Video output from the IGPU works fine though? Huh. So I try a different PCIe slot and what do you know... I'm pretty sure my 1080 fried the only 16x slot on the board. Not too big a deal to run on 8x but now I feel the machine is in its twilight years with one of the newest components in the rig failing so spectacularly and running with a damaged motherboard. Being realistic though, I won't be at all surprised if this thing will keep going another 6 years or more with an SSD change.

Warranties matter as much or more than quality. At first, I went all-in on the highest quality parts I could get without paying any attention to the warranty service. To this day I still consider the Asus 780 DCUII an incredibly well-built card. When I retrieved it to replace the blown-up 1080 I was impressed all over again with how sturdy it felt and just the quality of work Asus put into it. But all cards can fail, and if the same thing that happened to my EVGA 1080 had happened to my Asus 780... well, I'd have been shit out of both luck and $650. As it stands I'm actually getting an upgrade out of this catastrophe (albeit still being left with a dead PCIe slot).

Don't bother with watercooling, not even AIOs except in very specific use cases. It's not anywhere close to being worth the headache for the vast majority of people going that route. The amount of additional maintenance and attention required to keep a watercooled rig going strong for so many years is way more than you're going to want to do. I know you're pretty into the hardware side of your computer now, but just trust me. You're going to be a substantially different person in 5 years, most likely one that wants a machine that just works without any doubts about water leaks, water line contamination, pumps dying, etc.

Shit's expensive, yo. Yes I know I didn't do my wallet any favors here, but just be aware that if you want to maintain a top-shelf rig for many years to come, get ready to shell out many thousands too. It's not a one-and-done purchase, even if you can handle falling behind the state of the art. I didn't even list all of my peripherals here. In addition to all of this I've also got a UPS, a Das Keyboard 4, monitor stand for the 34UM95 and an Ergotron arm mount for the VG248QEs, flight sim peripherals, headphones, DAC, and more. Plus power bills I've honestly got no clue how much this thing has cost me in total. At least $5.5k. Was it worth it? Oh fuck yeah it was worth it. But I'm not exactly on a tight budget here... don't stretch yourself for something that is ultimately probably going to serve as much as a distraction from responsibility as it will a tool for bettering your life. It undeniably is the latter... but you don't need to spend nearly as much if you just want a productivity machine.

What would I have done differently with the initial build? Probably nothing. I probably should have gone all-SSD a year or two ago but that's fine. In the near future I'll just replace the OS drive and add a storage SSD. My machine has been an absolute pleasure to own, a dream come true after years of the shitty family computer (even by 90s standards) and countless craptops. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

Good morning.

We've been going back to basics lately - to the essentials of Jesus's message.

Today's readings focus on two of the most fundamental practical essentials of that message. Principles that are immediately actionable, and that, especially in this day and age, people need to hear.

The first is that trying to separate ingroup from outgroup will lead you astray.

We have a tendency to ask people for their credentials before we'll listen to them. A tendency to want proof that someone got their conclusions from the right place.

You could say that a tree is known by its fruits. You could rhetorically ask whether Satan would cast out Satan.

But either way, the point is this: that if the good news is "all one thing", then a doctrine's positive effects should be enough for us to pay attention... and thus, if we're to get a full picture, we mustn't structure our lives as though all of this is reserved for a credentialed few. The Kingdom is not a walled garden; the wall has been broken down. God doesn't ration out its fruits by some gauge of worthiness, nor reserve its graces for some ingroup; it's too big for that anymore. So why should we? If the wrong person has the right idea, shouldn't we listen to it anyway, since it is, in fact, the right idea? If the wrong person does the right thing, does it somehow become the wrong thing just by association? Such logic is as natural as breathing, and as silently deadly as breathing carbon monoxide, because we don't know who's "the wrong person", and sometimes the person we think is outgroup is telling us exactly what we need to hear.

And the second is like it: a sense that, as Chesterton summarized over a millenium later, "to be rich is to be in peculiar danger of moral wreck". If we believe we can touch another world by being willing to dig down deep and give more than we thought we had, the dark shadow of that is that to be always comfortable, to get too used to comfort, to set our hedonic treadmills as high as we can push them, is to dull our ability to react to those moments. By trapping ourselves at a "standard of living" that we don't really need, we limit the flexibility we might otherwise have to respond to the needs of others and practice "being driven to action by our care", which is the kind of love that alone can save us. What's worse - as James reminds us - to become accustomed to wealth, to be dependent on it, is to make yourself dependent on what's giving you that wealth, which may turn out to not be compatible with love.

And these are intertwined. In our world, when you stop thinking in terms of ingroup and outgroup, what's the most common alternate credential that people try to present? It's the credential of "skin in the game", or of "I've built a fortune on this topic, which proves me the expert". It's the argument that money somehow chooses - judges - attaches itself to the worthy and wise, even though it's just as easy to make money by being clueless but ruthless.

And when you're trying to rationalize your weath as just, the easiest way to write off the damage that collecting it might have done, is to imagine them in an outgroup, somehow less worthy or deserving. Like the religious functionaries who devour widows' houses, like the kingdoms of Jesus's time which enslaved ethnic minorities to build their monuments. Or, in a world like today's, where to be poor is itself an outgroup, entangled with other outgroups, and seen as unworthy of living in dignity by way of one excuse or another.

Jesus, today, says: if we're to survive, we've got to get past all that. Be less concerned with credentials; by their fruits you shall know them. Be more concerned with the moral context of your own luxuries, your own indulgences. To have the love that the Kingdom is built upon, the love that drives you to action, requires, sometimes, that we be willing to act on that love by giving up what conflicts with it.

Have you been hearing about boycotts, lately? Picket lines echoing with "the cries of the harvesters"? There's more than one reason that Catholics historically had so many fast days - more than one reason that we still observe Lenten abstinence. But one of those reasons has always been to ready us for these moments when we must either cut off a dear indulgence, or injure our capacity to love. And one of the wonders of the Kingdom is that it can spread its seeds where you least expect, even to the outermost of who we would imagine to be the outgroup, if only they have a chance to see it in action and realize what they've seen.

As we have learned before: we choose which world we live in, which master we shall serve.

So let's take this opportunity, as the year wanes and the Second Coming approaches, to examine our own lives. To cultivate them, becoming more ready, more able to take the opportunities to love that we get, even if we have to give something up. Let's become more open to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, so that we too may be able to bear the fruits that God gave to Moses's contemporaties, or to Jesus's. Because if we do, then that might just be what saves us.

This fan uses 382 watts of power and can run for pennies on the hour.  Much less than your current A/C system.  This fan is rated for over 40,000 hours of use and is up to 30% more efficient and powerful than other industrial fans in this price range.

One of the things that keeps this fan operating so quietly is that it it’s not belt driven, like other attic fans.  The direct drive keeps the noise down and the energy savings up.

Installation is relatively easy as well.  The most difficult part is running the electrical to the fan unit, but if you’re not comfortable with this as a DIY project, you can definitely hire an electrician to run the wiring and it shouldn’t cost a ton.  The fan weighs about 65lbs, so you’ll need some help getting it into the attic.

Wait until a hot evening when you crank this fan on and feel the cool air being pulled in from outside.  You’ll wonder why you took so long to install a quality whole house fan.

  I ended up including another one of the Quiet Cool fans on my recommended top 5 list because it’s a slightly smaller model than the 3100 I listed in the #1 spot and it’s less expensive as well.  The QC CL-2250 produces approximately 2,280 CFM of air movement which is absolutely perfect for homes in the 1,100 sq/ft range.

Just like the other Quiet Cool models, the 2250 features the patented self contained duct system which really helps keep the sound volume down from inside the house.  Sound can be further dampened by using the approved strap hanger system for the fan unit, which eliminates excessive vibration into the house structure.  You should notice very little, if any sound inside the house when the fan is at full power.

The HV1000 uses minimal power, keeping the bills low and is very quiet during full power usage.  Installation is very simple, especially if you already have an available power outlet near the installation location of your attic.

Price point is also reasonable at nearly half the cost of similar sized duct style home fans.  I would definitely put this on your list of fans to consider, especially if you have a moderate sized home that doesn’t requite a massive fan to cool it down.

Are whole house fans effective at Cooling?

Virtually everybody knows that an air conditioning system is one of the best ways to keep your house cool in the summer. But the fact that running the AC night and day can nearly triple your electric bill makes it hard for some homeowners to swallow. With a home fan system you don’t need to run the unit constantly to cool down your home. You can flip it on a couple times during the day for several minutes or turn it on right before everybody goes to bed to make sure the house is cool for sleeping in.

Whole home fans are extremely effective however they are dependent on several factors to be completely efficient. They very easily move large volumes of air out of your home and into your attic space quickly. However to really cool your house down properly the outside temperature needs to be considerably cooler then the inside temperature of your home. If your home is 85 degrees inside and it’s 95 degrees outside your fan is only going to suck in hotter are and not cool your home down very well. If you live in a climate where you have hot days and cooler evenings you are a prime candidate for installing a whole home fan.

At the end of the day simply open the door to or crack a couple of windows and turn your fan on. The fan will pull all the warm air out of your home and vented into your attic and at the same time, draw the cooler air in from outside. Depending on the size of your home you can replace all of the warm air with cool air after just a few minutes of running your fan.

How energy efficient are whole house fans?

Now that you know how effective a whole home fan system can be you’re probably wondering exactly how much energy you’re going to save, and dollars, over using your traditional air conditioning system. This is definitely one of the main reasons people tend to go with a whole home fan unit is because running the AC is far too expensive to do for an entire summer season. The benefit of the whole home fan is that you can run it in short bursts for quick cooling. This means you’re not drawing continuous electricity like a normal AC.

The motors these fans use are extremely efficient and can produce high power output without consuming a lot of power. Meaning they will suck a lot of air without using a lot of electricity in the process. Most home fans like this will use between 200 watts and 700 watts of power. A typical air conditioning system can use over 2000 watts of power and up to 5000 watts of power. A whole home fan only uses 15% of a standard home air conditioning system. This is what makes a whole house fan so desirable compared to normal AC.

Before you install your whole house fan make sure you’ve chosen one that matches the size of your home making sure it will fit in your attic or crawl space area. There are different sizes and shapes you can pick from so finding one that will fit your particular space shouldn’t be difficult .

Choosing the right size fan and ventilation

Running power to the fan

I’m no electrician, so I’d rather not try to give you proper instructions for running power to your fan, however you do have several options with most of the whole home fans. Some will have a remote control for the fan, and you will just need to plug into an available outlet in the attic near the fan unit to have it up and running. Other fans will have to be wired with a switch somewhere in the house so you can turn the house fan on and off. This is the trickier of the 2 options, so if you aren’t good with electrical, or don’t want to pay to hire this job out, I’d suggest getting a fan with a remote control that you can operate from inside your home. It’s a much simpler installation process.

Securing the fan unit

You may need to create a platform for the fan to sit on inside the Attic.You can do this by nailing a piece of plywood to the joists where you want the fan unit to sit. Some fans come with straps that allow you to hang the fan from the roof joists. The benefit of this is that the fan is not touching any part of the house structure transferring vibrations that you will hear from below. No matter which method you use be sure to secure the fan properly so that it does not move around when running.

Check power settings

Once you have your vent installed and your fan unit secured and power run to your fan you will want to adjust the motor speed settings and make sure the fan unit is still tightly secured after running the fan for a period of time.

Classic Car Studio Builds a Model A that Stops Traffic

Rock stars. They’ve got the life. They go out, play some gigs, and then do famous people stuff with other famous people all the while making themselves more famous. That fame also allows them the opportunity to buy or build their dream rides.

That brings us here, to this 1930 Ford Model A, a bare metal street rod formally owned by bassist Dale Stewart of the band Seether. As the story goes Dale was no stranger to performance automobiles, having owned quite a few sport and exotic cars as well as his share of custom motorcycles. In the latter part of 2016, he contacted Noah Alexander, the owner of Classic Car Studio in St. Louis, Missouri about building a one-off special. This was not going to be a typical restomod or flat-out speed machine, but instead a chopped, channeled and blown ground-pounder that was to be enjoyed a mere twenty miles at a time. According to Noah, “He wanted something that was totally crazy, off the wall and completely unique that could be driven when he got back from touring, and that, if we came up with a great idea, we’d have full permission to just run with it and do whatever we want.”

And run with it they did.

Noah’s idea at first sounded simple. Build a raw, classic hot rod complete with the full playbook of Classic Car Studio touches. It was to be a mix of old school design and craftsmanship combined with a bit of steam punk flair, resulting in a car that would not only stop traffic, but summon conversation wherever it was driven. Before we dive into the Model A, though it’s important to learn a little about CCS owner Noah Alexander as a car enthusiast and business owner, as it will help everyone to better comprehend the genesis of the ’30 Ford.

For many of us the urge to play with cars started at a young age. Matchbox and Hot Wheels where the choice of many, and be it good or bad, the desire to keep playing only evolved as we matured. Sadly, one of the most difficult things a budding young car enthusiast can endure is the realization that those around them do not share in their passion – something Noah found at a young age.

“As a kid, I was always trying to get my Dad to buy a Mustang, Camaro, or a pickup truck, but he just drove what was appropriate and didn’t care about cars otherwise. My parents nurtured my other interests such as sports and music, and while they never neglected me in anyway, they never saw my enthusiasm for cars. It was never even on their radar,” Noah says. As a way to venture into the field, Noah would research local car shows, then jump on his bicycle and ride all over town in an attempt to be a part of them. While he did tinker with automobiles in high school, it wasn’t until after college that things started to fall into shape.

To those who want to enter this profession Noah states, “I always push tech schools. If you want to get into the car business and you like this hobby, get into engineering, go to a tech school, and learn the craft. It will only help you. I had a business and psychology degree with a minor in Spanish (laughs) and went through the whole school system because I thought that’s what I had to do. I cherish it in regards to the critical thinking skills and tools it’s given me that are important in life, but I would’ve been better off in vocational school. The problem was that I didn’t even know that was an option until I was already in the business. Back then it seemed like if you went to technical school, it was looked down upon. In hindsight, that is just ridiculous.”

To understand why this is relevant, we must go back to 2006 when Classic Car Studio wasn’t a hot rod shop, but, instead, was a purveyor of classic vehicles that catered to customers from around the world. At the time, buying and selling classic and exotic cars was a great business, as the economy was strong. When it started to go south in the late 2000’s, though, things changed. For starters, the bank for which Noah relied on was purchased by another bank, which subsequently failed, as did the credit line that was extended to him. That meant a halt on the buying of new inventory and a rush to sell everything they had. Rather than laying off workers and closing shop, Noah invested in the talents of his employees and modified his business plan to move Classic Car Studio forward in a new direction.

“We had a group of technicians that were into street racing, hot rods, and all that stuff, so we started building hot rods and custom cars. It started out of utter panic, which is crazy, but it ultimately became the best part of what we’re now doing, which is pretty damn cool,” says Noah.

In addition to building custom cars, what Classic Car Studio is doing now is Speed Is The New Black, a new show on Discovery. However, when first approached about the idea of doing a show, Noah was skeptical, “At first, it was kind of a foreign idea that I knew nothing about. With new things, you generally lose money, but we shot a sizzle reel and after two years, (laughs) it got picked up. My favorite part about it, beyond the great customers and the cool builds, is that we’ve gotten to meet everyone in the automotive industry because, all of a sudden, we became recognizable. Not only has this help gain a host of new customers, but new fans as well.”

Fast forward to the present and the build of this Model A; a build that combines a variety of styles and components. We’re talking about a 1930 Ford body with a Chrysler 331 HEMI that’s mated to a GM transmission and fed through a Ford rear end – got that? And while it may seem like a hodgepodge of parts, there is a method to the madness.

Noah explains, “this build was a breath of fresh air. We had the idea to build something really simplistic and visceral, while using the best parts we had access to. It’s stout, it does a burnout at quarter throttle and it’s just a wild ride. This is not the kind of vehicle you drive for 200-miles. Instead, it’s 20-miles and you’re done. There are a few cars out there that make you terrified when you drive them, which is the ultimate experience for me.. For a car to make you feel that way every time you drive it, I’ll chalk that up as a win.”

Let’s begin with the power plant. TRUTH: Everything, regardless of the year, make or model looks better with a blown HEMI. Rebuilt by Morley Performance of Fenton, Missouri, the 331 HEMI was outfitted with a Hot Heads Cam (for a wicked lope), a set of Holley Carburetors, MSD Ignition, and Speedway Motors Headers that are just loud enough to blow the eardrums out of both the driver and passenger. The whole setup is gnarly and gives the car a presence that’s akin to the scrappiest junkyard dog you’ve ever come across.

For cooling, a keen eye will notice the lack of a radiator behind that custom grille. Frankly that isn’t a surprise, as the industry doesn’t make many units for applications such as this. While mounting one up front was the original plan, it simply wasn’t efficient, nor did it work with the overall aesthetic of the car. Instead, they mounted a large, high-capacity unit out back, complete with twin electric fans that move 3,000-cfm apiece.

From there, the crew crafted a custom built chassis that in itself, is a work of art. With box tubing for stiffness and with the goal of enhanced drivability, the chassis was constructed so that the entire driveline would be housed up and inside the body. In fact look closely and you’ll notice that nothing hangs lower than the actual body of the car. After the engine was positioned, a TH700-R4 automatic transmission with a custom 10-inch converter was sourced from TCI Transmissions along with a John’s Industries Ford 9-inch rearend with 4.10 gears.

For suspension, the Model A utilizes a solid I-beam with radius arms and a reverse spring up front with a custom 4-link with Speedway Motors shocks and modified perches out back. The wheels are custom Classic Car Garage’s own “Smoothie” models shod with Firestone Deluxe Champion rubber from Coker Tire. The stance is aggressive and staggered with 18-inch front and 20-inch rims in the rear. Stopping is accomplished via a hidden Wilwood master cylinder and drum brakes at all four corners compliments of Speedway Motors. For those of you who scoff at the idea of drum brakes in this day and age, just remember what famed auto journalist Brock Yates once said, “The point of brakes in an emergency stop is to stop you once. If you have to make emergency stop after emergency stop, you have a problem worse than your brakes.”

With the mechanical bits out of the way, Noah and his team turned to the body. The guys at CCS started with an original 1930 Ford Model A shell that was stripped bare to find any imperfections. From there 5 inches was chopped from the roof with an additional 3 inches of channelling done to the floors and outer body so that the rear suspension would fit tucked up within a custom enclosure. Even though the body itself was chopped and massaged, the crew still managed to keep the integrity of the Model A intact. To aid with cooling, twin panels were cut into the rear to duct air through the radiator. They were scalloped fitted with brass rivets, a theme that can be seen throughout the vehicle.

Noah knew he wanted retain the wooden slats in the roof, so he turned to friend and woodworker Martin Goebel from Goebel & Co. Furniture, and together they came up with an innovative solution. They made a template that follows the curvature of the roof, and built the slats in layers using a combination of an exotic hardwood known as zebrawood, strengthened by sheets of carbon fiber. In total, four layers of zebrawood and three layers of carbon fiber were used to maximize the roofs stiffness and rigidity. As the Model A was always meant to be a “sunshine only” type of vehicle, a decision was then made to leave the roof uncovered so that onlookers would have visual access to the cabin.

From the exterior to the interior, the bare metal theme continues. Every surface on the Model A has been custom fabricated utilizing bead rolled panels, chocolate brown leather accents, and a slew of brass rivets for contrast. This is a minimalist interior if there ever was one with little to no attention paid to comfort.Hell, there aren’t even windows. Twin bomber seats have been fitted to hold you in place, but don’t look for seatbelts because there aren’t any. The only things you’ll find in the cabin are a set of vertically stacked Autometer gauges that have been frenched into the console, a two spoke steering wheel with brass accents, and a big ass shift lever with a leather boot.

So how’s the visibility? Gee, thanks for asking…

It’s amazing. It’s terrifying. It’s exhilarating. In other words, it is exactly how it should be for a build such as this. Nothing about this car is practical. Staring out the windshield means a face full of 6-71. Rest your arm on the window sill and prepare to have road debris embedded in your elbow. If that’s not enough, you can always take comfort in knowing that the fuel tank is mounted directly behind your head. Take that Ford Pinto!

Non-traditional builds like the CCS Model A are intriguing. They’re not about fuel economy numbers, safety, or comfort. Instead they’re vessels built around the ideals of hooliganism and adrenaline,. They also take an owner that’s of confident mind and body as the driving dynamics couldn’t be more different to that of a modern vehicle.

“This thing causes Moms in minivans to fist pump when you drive by. It’s so loud that it makes people on sidewalks freeze or something crazy. It creates spastic behavior in people. We’ve had one other build that’s done this- our twin-turbo C10- and while that makes people go crazy, nothing makes them lose their minds like the Model A,” says Noah.

I recently traveled back to the house I grew up in on M street in Ramey. I have followed the state of the island since Maria hit almost 8 weeks ago, and had lots of questions going down, so I thought I’d share my notes…

Travel by air:  I was not able to book in or out of BQN airport… Jetblue flights that run overnight from the states were all cancelled.  So I booked AA through San Juan.  Prices were reasonable on AA, but Jetblue is still the best if you can get a flight.  Easy to find flights down to the island… harder to find them back.  SJU airport was full, but operating normally.  AC was on, and I had no trouble transiting and picking up my rental car.  BQN currently only has had a regular service from Spirit Airlines from FLL.  In theory, service from Jetblue and United will return to BQN before the holidays, but we’ll only know for sure once its happened.  One new feature of BQN - the old ready area where the bombers used to park has been taken over by the US military, and is now a small city of lights with lots of army trucks exiting and entering near the golf course.  Now that the Army’s mission is complete, this may return to its normal empty state.

Connectivity: much better than expected.  I have a Verizon contract and was connected to Claro the moment I powered up at SJU and it remained so all over the North side of the island.  Near Ramey, the connection is actually LTE, which means its been good enough to use my phone as a hotspot for email, research, e-commerce.  I believe that this is partially a result of more than 40 high efficiency solar powered cell stations that were brought to the island by Vanu inc.  (Vanu Bose, the founder of Vanu and the driver of this humanitarian contribution, was the son of Amar Bose of the eponymous corporation. He passed away last week.)  People on AT&T were also on Claro.   I had coverage from San Juan to Mayaguez continuously on Route 2 without interruption.  I wouldn’t count on this to watch netflix, but it was strong and reliable for phone, text, and email.  All of Ramey had coverage.  At this point there is no value in pursuing satellite, but there are various expensive Satellite systems, like this one from Garmin, that keep you in basic communication when you're off the cell grid, but they don't actually replace Internet connection.  There's a great review in there that goes on for pages - its a complicated device.

Travel around the island - Driving from San Juan to Ramey was almost completely normal except for the visuals.  You notice right away that all the outdoor advertising and large signage is gone, and pretty much anything involving wood, corrugated roofing, or poles for any use.  Traditional construction of concrete with metal ventanas is pretty much untouched. The impact is notable in San Juan, but becomes much more dramatic from Arecibo on.  A kinda weird visual - you could tell the worst sections because the buildings looked sandblasted.  Many businesses along #2 were open with generators, or occasionally, a section that had power.  I took the same route to Ramey as I have done, without detours.  Some traffic lights are out, but none of the really important ones where big routes cross.  If you have to turn left at a busted light on rt. 2, just don’t…. turn right and figure it out later.  

Water… is flowing in Ramey and many places around the island, and did not drop out when I was there.  There’s still a boiling order, and when you take a shower you come out smelling like you exited a heavily chlorinated pool.  But regardless, having water is great.  I brought two different filtration systems, one that is gravity based (Lifestraw) and one that you pump.  I bought 4 coleman solar showers, which are basically 5 gallon black plastic bags with nozzles.  Down the road, I’ll try to purchase some water storage, a big cisterns for flushing, and something else for long term storage of potable water, but right now this was not as urgent.

Fuel:  I had no problems getting gas, there were no lines and most gas stations were open.

Groceries: The Econo is open, and even takes credit cards.  As always, its a social center, so budget 3 minutes for talking for every minute of shopping.  The coolers were full and prices are about as I remember them.  I bought a fresh salad that was good!

Restaurants: many are open, though some with a smaller menu or shorter hours.

Beaches: After seeing pics of crashboat online I was concerned that all the beaches were just as hollowed out… not so:

Crash boat: every bit as dramatic as the pics.  Right side is now tiny and not terribly safe, lots of exposed rock under the surf near the jetty.  It seems that a lot of the missing beach was thrown onto the space that was the parking lot… which is now 3-4 feet deep with sand.  I hold out hope that this sand can be pushed back out to re-create some of the old the beach.  The left side you can still park and swim; its smaller but not that different from how it was.  

Malecon Aguadilla: The brand new oceanfront walk seems to have come through entirely unharmed and looks great.

Borinquen beach: Much as beautiful as it always has been.  Only new feature: a military unit desalinating water in the parking lot… impressive operation.

Survival / Martinica / Bajuras / Shacks: the Sand road down the cliff is still intact, though the left turn to go to Survival is completely blocked.  You can go straight across, although its still rainy season and with all the recent dumping its turned into a bit more of a cesspool of garbage and shit than I remember.  It appears that despite the violence of the storm, the waves did not break through the dunes and flood the old sand excavation area - a concern I’d long held.  Once across, you can walk the strand to either survival or Shacks without impediment.  I saw many hoof prints as well, so it looks like people are riding this stretch.   The lawns next to the Eclipse took a beating, but the restaurant was hardly touched… hopefully people will be able to breakfast and lunch their soon.

Jobos: is in mid-construction down near the beach access, so I didn’t see that much, but did not seem too undermined.  None of the oceanfront places fell in, and many were open and totally full on a Friday night.

Surfers: the road down has a couple trees propped across the roadway, but not so low you can’t pass.  The parking lot structure is a bit undermined, but it was before.  Waves are the same.

Spot/Middles/Isabela: I was down that way at Julios in lower Isabela on Sunday and the place was as full as I can remember, complete with the parade of Jeeps and music.  The beach roads are intact and the north shore seems largely as it was.

Money / ATMs, Banks, Credit Cards: this is not quite back to normal, cash is still the only currency in a lot of smaller businesses, but I didn’t have trouble getting cash out of ATMs, and used credit cards for large purchases at Home Depot and Econo.

Electricity - This is really the biggest story that remains.  The grid is a string and tinkertoy tangle that will be an enormous labor to sort out.  Just to restore 30 houses on our street is a project that will require clearing/cutting dozens of fallen trees to create backyard access, and then every pole, wire and transformer is down (and will have been for months), and most connections to the individual houses are impaired as well.  And the whole island is like that.  Right now, the focus is on the easiest and most critical places.  The most recent estimate that I think is credible is 70% of meters connected by the end of February.  This leaves the 30% that pay the smallest bills and are the hardest to reach, and I could see it being another year before its 95%.  While I was there, none of the housing areas in Ramey had power, but there were a few areas outside Gate 1 and Gate 5 that had been restored.  Lots of people run generators - our neighborhood sounds like lawn mowers going 24 hours a day.  The Solar folks, particularly Maximo Solar near us, are crazy busy.  He’s signed contracts for more than 1,000 off-grid systems… only about a million more to go!

Until power is restored - There is a lot that can be done to improve quality of life even if you do not have grid power.  Its hard to know how much to spend because you don’t know when you might be lucky enough to get your power back on.  My view - think of your spending as one part now, one part preparation for the next Irma/Maria.  But with the money thing in mind, I’ll go in order from cheapest to most expensive.  I brought two checked bags of 50 lbs each, so my experience was limited to what I could brink and what i could buy on the island.  

— My very favorite thing is the OPolar USB fan. This 9 inch fan  doesn’t replace a ceiling fan, but it runs all night, blows enough to keep me cool and keep the bugs at bay, and uses just a part of my laptop battery, and it was cheap.  We still had our mosquito nets, but the mosquitoes were actually not bad in Ramey, so I did not re-hang them.  This fan actually had a review from someone in PR who used it after Maria using her laptop battery.  I also found these little fans that are used to cool electronics and blow 50 CFMs each and are powered by USB ports out of the batteries.  I bought two sets of two... These worked and drew very little, but the Opolar was a much better solution for cooling down and sleeping.

— I bought 4 LED solar lights that you leave outside during the day and stay on all night... they have motion detectors and you can leave them in three modes: full on, night light, or motion detecting that goes from night light to full.  My next favorite thing.  charge up during the day, take them inside and light your evening hours no problem.  Then leave them in night-light mode so you don’t stub your toe on the way to the bathroom.

— a Two burner grill and a propane cylinder.  I bought these on the island for $89 and $49 at the Home Depot in Hatillo, and now I can boil water and cook stuff.

— portable fold up solar panels (36 watts) - this is perfect for charging cell phones and kindles, but not for laptop or fan.  I’d skip this, and instead, the next two are useful individually, but if you’re willing to drop the dough, they are perfect together:

—185 watt-hour battery that output USB and, with separate inverters, 110 volt AC which runs laptops, charges phones, anything up to 100 watts draw, including the USB fans (see above), but also the smaller of the standard 120 volt rotating fans.  

— 80 watt fold up panel to charge the battery.  These connect to each other via a 5.5 outside diameter * 2.5mm inside diameter DC cable that is female on both ends, but is fairly short, so I bought 3 12 foot male to female extenders. This combo worked great, but you really do need 8 hours of sun to recharge the battery if you’ve drawn it all the way down.  It weighs 4 lbs, folds to the size of a fat laptop, and if you have a reasonably sunny day, will power up the battery I listed above.  While I don’t recommend it, I did leave this unit out in some pretty heavy rain several times, and it continued working.

— One of the things that I hungered for as I tried to mete out my meager trickle of electricity was the ability to know how many watts a thing used… what would burn down my battery faster, this fan or that fan?  This watt meter would have been super useful, so I’ve bought three and they’ll go back down with me in December.

— A 1000 watt honda generator.  This is 26 lbs and can be brought in checked luggage as long as you never open the box.  It is the quietest, lightest, smallest generator on the planet, and runs longer on less fuel than anything out there.  Two trade-offs: you can only power 900 watts of stuff with it, and its pricier than many bigger, noisier, heavier generators.  This will let you run things like a (modern) fridge, almost any household item that doesn’t have a heating element including all your fans to keep you cool, and you can charge your batteries in the rain.  Generators could not be had at any store I visited on the island, nor could you buy a jerry can, and I looked.  If you bring a generator to the island, bring a jerry can or you’ll not get much use of it.

— Cool trick: turn off every single breaker in the house.  Turn everything off.  Cut off the female end of an extension cord, and splice on a male end.  Plug one end into your generator, and the other into a wall socket.  Now all the things that are on that circuit are powered by the generator.  In my case, that enabled things like ceiling fans and the lights attached to them.  Warning: do not back-power the grid, make sure that the circuit you plug into is -not- open.  If this sounds confusing, just think of it like water.  If your neighbor has well water and your city water is out, they can run a hose to your outdoor spigot and turn both ends on, and you’ve got water in your house… now you just need to make sure that your neighbors well isn’t running through your house back out into the city water system full of broken pipes or whatever.

— Refrigeration -- Our house fridge ran brilliantly on the Honda genset… it cooled right down, and stayed pretty cool when the generator wasn’t running.  Alternatively, there are some really fantastic new compressors  in a 40 quart fridge/freezer (about 1.33 cubic ft) that draw just 30 watts (about 10% of the power of a normal fridge) and can run for a week on the charge in a 12 volt car battery.  I'm not going to jump on this, but it may be the best way forward for folks that are trying to run a minimalist electrical footprint on portable solar panels.

— Cleanup & Tools -- Chainsaws could not be had at any store on the island.  Dewalt has a new 'flexvolt' battery system with 60 volt tools.  For example this chainsaw or this fan.  If you buy 4 batteries, you can power an inverter power station that with the power stored in all 4 batteries is a little like the jobsite version of the Tesla Powerwall, which can power a house fridge or other normal things that need house current.  I didn’t purchase / test this.

Laundry -- This becomes a top issue once you’re in week 4 and you have water and generators.  The motors in older washers draw 1,000 to 2,000 watts, so you need a bigger generator than the one I brought.  Modern energy star washers draw more like 500 watts.  Dryers - Just no… I’ll put up a clothes line for the back porch.

Bigger Batteries, Inverters, bigger portable solar — We have had folks from RAM staying in the house, and they were kind enough to put another portable solar solution on the house.  It was a pair of Centech 750 watt inverters, a Solar charge controller model cm-30a, two Uni-Solar PVL-136 roll-out solar panels, and a 935 CCA 12 volt lead acid truck battery that I bought at the local auto parts place.  This system worked, but was not able to run stuff that drew more than 100-200 watts.  I think part of this was just my ignorance of how to optimize the utilization of this rig.

Bigger Generators - Generators are everywhere, so the whole island is like Saturday morning with lawn mowers running.  The inexpensive gas generators work great but they are -very- noisy.  After waking up to the sound of a generator for the Xth time, quiet is important and merciful.  With that in mind, the Honda 2,000 watt generators can be put in tandem, they have an ‘eco’ mode that throttles up and down as energy is drawn, they are efficient, and as quiet as its possible to make a generator that makes this much power.  4 kilowatts peak service will allow most houses to do most things, with thoughtfulness about what gets turned on.  A dual rig with parallel cables, security attachments and extended run fuel system can be had for under $2,500.

Permanent Solar - This is the long term solution.  I’ve gone ahead and committed to 21 240 volt panels and a Tesla powerwall, to be installed by Maximo Solar.  This, combined with a moderation of electrical consumption, will permanently address electrical power.  Two neighbors had rooftop solar arrays that survived the winds of the storm completely intact.  Another neighbor out on the cliff was a bit more exposed, and their array tangled with a solar water heater tank, and was a total loss.

A couple concluding topics:

Law & Order: My experience was really very much like life on the island at any other time.  Across more than 4 decades there’s been lots of petty larceny, and perhaps I’ve just been lucky,  but I’ve experienced just one face to face larceny (in high school on the track bus) and zero violent crimes.  While there are stories (as ever) and people should take proper precautions, I found the island as peaceful (and chaotic) as ever it has been.  The mood and tone were warm, and I felt at every moment surrounded by commiseration and a willingness to help.  I felt totally secure at gas stations, banks, supermarkets and airports.

The big work: I saw electrical crews out at all hours of day and night, in all weathers.  Debris removal crews had started to come through our neighborhood.  Its an extraordinary undertaking, with no drive-in assistance, but I think the agree with others that amidst the huge challenges and overwhelming scale of work, the key words are resilience, optimism, and heartwarming positive vibes.

How to help?  

The first way to help is simply to think about this as you read the news, and as you advocate and you vote.  The future of the island is absolutely in the hands of our federal government, everything from the amount of assistance supplied to the diaspora of Boricuas that are arriving in the 10s of thousands, to the way that PREPA will pay the billions required to rebuild 50 years of electrical power infrastructure.  This stands on top of the basic questions that predate Maria: a decade of economic and population shrinkage, and a death spiral of debt burden.

There are many charities doing extraordinary work on the island.  Global Disaster Immediate Recovery Team worked with the Vanu team to restore cell communications on the island.  There is still a lot of work especially up in the mountains, so you can volunteer through the coordination site Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters.  If you’re on the island and unemployed, FEMA is hiring.

At a more personal level, I’ve followed through on gofundme campaigns of friends and colleagues, and tried to work the connections I know and contribute what I can to the upward spiral.  I’ve diverted resources from stateside projects to cleaning and rebuilding on the island, and tried to support others as they’ve done so as well.

Ask Anything: Easy-Starting EFI

Tom Edison; Milan, MI: Hey, Car Craft! I need some advice on how to make sure I get my new stand-alone EFI system to start and run the first time, as it’s on a new engine. I need to break it in too. The directions are 22 pages long, and while I think I have everything done right, I want to be sure I don’t screw this up. Can you help me out with a straightforward checklist? The engine in my 1967 Chevelle is a 383 with 11:1 compression, AFR 210 heads, Comp Cams 292XFI hydraulic roller cam, a Weiand Team G intake set up for port injection with 80-pound injectors, Holley 1,000-cfm throttle-body, MSD distributor, coil, and box. For the exhaust, I’m using Hooker headers with a Magnaflow 2.5-inch muffler and tailpipe kit. In the back, I have an Aeromotive A-1000 pump and matching EFI regulator with AN8 lines on the supply and return. I carefully followed the wiring diagrams, all the sensors are hooked up, and there is fresh gas in the tank. What am I missing, and what do I do next?

Car Craft: Tom, you told us everything except which stand-alone electronic control unit (ECU) you have, which software, and the types of sensors, specifically the crank and cam sensor. So, like your namesake, Thomas A. Edison, we’ll do our best to get you out of the dark, turn on the lights, and get that small-block shining and that Chevelle flying. The key to a clean start-up and successful tuning is familiarizing yourself with the software interface and getting everything calibrated, tested, documented, and ready to fire up. We’re going give you and all of our readers a step-by-step guide here, but to do that we need to make some assumptions (yeah, we know about assumptions). We’re assuming you will be using a stable, properly functioning laptop computer to manage your EFI system and that you have a way to keep it charged while tuning in the garage and on the road. There is nothing worse than trying to tune EFI on the road with a dying or dead computer. We are also assuming you have downloaded the correct software for your ECU and any computer-controlled accessories like a digital dash, trans controller, or fuel-pump controller. We also recommend having a good timing light, a volt/ohm meter, and the tools for working with your wiring connectors.

You mentioned that you’ll be using an MSD distributor, coil, and ignition box. Just like any build, you’ll want to be sure you have TDC marked on the damper with the factory or an aftermarket pointer. This will help when you need to confirm ignition timing and that commanded timing in the ECU is what’s actually happening at the No. 1 spark plug. Unlike a normal build, you’ll also want to lock out all advance mechanisms in the distributor. For example, on an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, you’ll lock down the mechanical advance by removing the advance components and removing and reinserting the driveshaft with the advance stop bushing pin inserted into a matching hole on the plate. The vacuum advance is locked out with a screw that goes through the mag pickup plate and into the distributor housing. The ECU will take care of all the functions of spark advance and retard that those mechanisms would have done before with far more complete control. You’ll also set up the distributor so the rotor points directly at the No. 1 lug on the cap when the engine is at TDC and tighten the distributor hold down. This is a good time to double-check that your plug wires are following the factory firing order of that Extreme Energy XFI cam. Use new plugs, preferably with a galvanized ground electrode like an AC Delco or NGK, to make plug reading easier. Yes, spark-plug reading is still one of the best ways to know what’s going inside the combustion chamber and what adjustments to make for timing and air/fuel ratio (AFR).

Speaking of AFR, you should have one or two AFR sensors with bungs welded into the collectors of those Hooker headers after the merge. The bungs should be on the top half of the collector tube to avoid condensation damage to the sensor and allow for plenty of space for the sensor pigtail. Be sure you have full-throttle travel on the gas pedal linkage to the throttle-body, just like with a carburetor. With a proper fill level on the oil, a new filter with oil in it, and coolant in the radiator and cooling system, we are set on the mechanical stuff.

So here are the key steps on the EFI side of things. First, switch the ignition to the “on” position only and verify that you can connect to the ECU and that your laptop and tuning software is displaying live parameters and data. You should see readings for coolant temperature, inlet air temp, and throttle position. Next, you’ll configure the fuel-system parameters, including injector size and running the fuel pump to check for leaks and verify that the static fuel pressure is correct. It can be handy to have a little mechanical gauge mounted on the fuel rail—or better, at the regulator—along with a fuel-pressure sensor for the ECU to log fuel pressure. You’ll enter that static pressure, typically 47 to 50 psi into your software. It’s best if it closely matches the nominal fuel pressure that your injectors were rated at for that 80 lb/hr. Ignition is next and you’ll configure the number of cylinders (eight, right?), the reluctor tooth count and type, and the spark outputs. You didn’t specify your crack sensor type or the tooth count, but most current ECUs support four-tooth crank trigger wheels up to 24- or 58-tooth LS-style wheels. You will need to verify the number of teeth, the number of missing teeth in the wheel, and the position of the crank position sensor relative to the position of the wheel and the missing tooth. Our preference is to use at least a 24x wheels (or greater), as they provide a more consistent and tunable signal.

After that, you’ll move through sensor checks: are the coolant (CLT) and air temp (IAT) sensors reading reasonably accurately (ambient temps in your garage). Does the manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) show ambient barometric pressure? Note that many MAP sensors will read in metric KPA, where 100 is sea level. Does the O2 or AFR sensor power up and read full lean? Typically, 22 is max lean. Finally, is the battery charged and reading at least 12.5 volts. You’ll want to see the battery at 13.2v or more when the engine is running to ensure adequate current and battery recharging while driving. Most ECUs will not function below 10v, and sometimes folks have problems starting new EFI engines because the starter load pulls down the battery voltage below 10v when cranking. Check the value shown in the tuning software with a reading from your VOM.

Next, you’ll check ECU outputs. With the fuel system disabled (and if it is supported in your software), check for spark output and cranking ignition advance around TDC. This is where having TDC properly marked with your pointer and that known good timing light come in. You’ll likely discover that this engine will want more initial timing than you are used to running, perhaps as high as 20 degrees, and most ECUs will reduce timing (by as much as 15 degrees) during cranking to spin the engine faster for start-up. If you have a fully degreed damper, you can check other cylinders as well to confirm firing order. All of that should be reflected in the timing-light reading. If your system allows it, test-fire the injectors without fuel pressure(!) and the spark disabled (you don’t want to fill the engine with gas!). Remember, spark plus fuel can equal boom!

With the spark and fuel disabled, crank the starter and check for a realistic cranking rpm of 100–200 with a conventional starter, as much as 300 with a gear reduction starter. Finally, make sure you know how to create and view data logs. Try one with the various cranking tests. Now, initiate a log and fire it up. There are a ton of great resources out there for this process. Holley’s documentation is excellent. There are forums for each ECU out there and a fun, educational resource is the RealTuners podcast on YouTube and Facebook. Good luck and let us know how this particular invention works out for you.

Spaced Out

Stephanie Barnes; Phoenix, AZ: Girls read Car Craft too, but at our house, it’s always a question of who gets to the mailbox first. We have a 1971 Torino that we are turning into a modernized all-around performance car with traditional muscle-car looks. We ordered a big disc-brake kit for the front and a smaller setup on the rear. We finally got a really good deal on our 18-inch updated versions of the classic Torq-thrust wheels with BFG G-Force Comp -2s, 255 and 275 sizes. The problem is the front wheels hit the new brake calipers and the way the wheels in the back are sucked in just isn’t what we want. I say we use wheel spacers to get everything to fit and look right, but my husband says running wheel spacers is bad for the front suspension and could cause problems with the axles when we take the car to drags or autocross. We can’t afford to buy different wheels or change the brakes. Can you help us, Car Craft?

Car Craft: Stephanie, we are glad to read that both of you are involved in your Torino restomod project and that you had the gumption to write us with a question that lots of folks wrestle with, as there is a lot of misinformation out there. I don’t know if there is a bet involved, but the short answer is there is nothing wrong with running wheel spacers if you follow some common-sense guidelines. Even NASCAR Cup car teams use spacers to adjust track width for different events. The two biggest issues with spacers are using cheaply made cast products that are neither flat nor concentric and, more importantly, not applying enough torque to the lug nuts! That first issue is pretty obvious. If the spacer doesn’t have truly parallel faces, then you’re bolting on tire wear, vibration, and accelerated wheel or axle-bearing failure. Therefore, it’s important to buy fully machined spacers made on high-quality lathes or mills. Look for runout measurements of 0.001 inch or less. Once that issue is addressed, the second concern is how well the spacer fits the axle. The OEMs typically have wheels that are hub-centric; that is, they are centered by register on the axle or wheel hub. However, many aftermarket wheel makers produce wheels that are lug-centric, which means that the perpendicular straightness of the wheel studs is critical and any spacer needs to be precisely drilled to maintain that squareness. So look for spacers that are drilled for both the bolt pattern and the diameter of the wheel studs you are running. For your Torino, that likely means 5-on-4.5-inch bolt circle with ½-inch studs. When you are installing a properly machined spacer, expect to have to tap it on lightly with a rubber mallet or composite dead-blow hammer to seat it onto the studs. If it won’t go on, inspect the wheel studs to verity that they are all square to the axle/hub face.

As you’ll have gathered, wheel studs are important to this process, so here are some additional guidelines. Knurled wheel studs should always be pressed in or out, not pulled in with washers and a lug nut or beaten out with a ball peen. This ensures that the stud is squarely seated and the head is flush against the hub/axle. Harbor Freight and others have very serviceable 12-ton presses for around $125, and if you don’t have one, you likely know someone who does. Next, be sure that the knurl does not show past the wheel side of the axle flange/hub face. If it does, it can prevent the wheel or spacer from seating properly.

Typically, the single biggest reason folks have trouble with wheels spacers comes from insufficient torque on the lug nuts. It is a common misunderstanding that the wheel studs prevent the wheel from slipping against the axle flange/hub, but this is incorrect. It is the coefficient of friction between the wheel face and the flange/hub face and the clamping force exerted by the lug nut on the stud that keeps the wheel in place. A wheel stud can only bend if the lug nuts are not properly torqued. Adding a wheel spacer between the flange/hub and the wheel does nothing to change this. NHRA rules allow spacers and only require that lug nut thread engagement is equal to the diameter of the stud. This means that super-long studs that stick out through the lug nuts are not required. The NHRA and other sanctioning bodies require the ability to inspect the thread engagement, so use either conventional open-end, taper-style lug nuts or open-end, mag-style lug nuts, such as those from McGard.

What is the right torque amount? For stock Ford-type ½x20 studs installed dry that are Grade 8 equivalent, it’s 120 ft-lb. Specifically for wheel studs, we recommend using either nickel antiseize or a dry film lubricant. Always hand-start the nut on the threads, then run down with an impact or ratchet-style socket and torque to spec with your torque wrench. The lubricated torque spec is 90 ft-lb. If you’ve upgraded to ARP wheel studs, the lubricated spec rises to 110. For those running 7/16 studs, the lubricated spec is 80, and for drag-racing 5/8-inch drive studs, the number is 240! The clamping force on those ½x20 studs is 21,560 pounds per stud!

The last item is how thin or thick can you go with spacers? As long as you have adequate thread engagement and torque the lug nuts properly, up 2 inches of spacer on the rear and 1 inch on the front will not present any significant issues. As a wheel and tire are spaced farther out on the front, the scrub radius will increase making the car more sensitive to bumps and pavement grooves. It will also slightly increase the load on your front wheel bearings. Lastly, as you increase front track, you improve lateral stability, but you may feel a bit more squirm under braking. This is why we suggest no more than 1-inch spacers on the front.

Now you know you can safely solve your brake-caliper interference and stance issues with spacers. As you’ll also now know, it’s always the best idea to use your brake manufacturer’s template (should be available online) to test wheel fitment before mounting them and making them unreturnable.

Wheel spacers come in a variety of sizes, materials, and configurations for bolt pattern and stud diameter. Note that the thinnest spacer shown, 1/8-inch, is made from steel. That is because aluminum that thin can deform under proper lug nut torque settings.

These mag- or shank-style lug nuts from McGard are made from high-quality steel with rolled threads and have a long-lasting hard-chrome finish. They are open ended for inspection by track officials, but also come with easy-to-remove broached hex caps to keep out road grit.

ARP makes these 200,000-psi wheel studs in a variety of lengths, diameter, thread pitch, and knurl sizes. Be sure the knurl does not extend past the face of the hub and that the stud is long enough to provide thread engagement at least equal to the diameter of the stud.

NHRA wheels rule.

Pro Street Lives in David Burroughs’ 1969 Camaro Z/28

David Burroughs knew what he wanted the minute he laid eyes on it. “My neighbor Donnie Buckler brought home a sweet ’69 Camaro Z/28 with a 302 in it, and from that moment on, that was the car of my dreams,” states David. Well, we can’t say we blame him one bit, as that particular Chevy has turned many a young hot rodder into a true Camaro devotee for the last 50 years.

Over his formative years, David started on his way to becoming a true Camaro devotee. After going to a number of Super Chevy shows, the local tracks, and even the events at the convention center in Washington, D.C., he drew up a mental plan of what he would want in his own Chevy pony ride. So, naturally, when David finally got the chance to score a Camaro of his own, these ideas would meld into his ultimate dream ride.

He loved seeing a big blower through the hood, and he knew that was a “must” on any Camaro he would call his own. Fat tires looked mean, and showed that you had the power to torque and twist them to launch off the starting line. And last but not least, to burn up those fatties out back, he needed big-block power under the hood for his Camaro. And as far as David was concerned, there would be no exceptions.

About 10 years ago, after looking for a suitable starting point for his dream Camaro for some time, David’s brother Dennis spotted an interesting ’69 at Winegardner Chevrolet, a few miles from their home in Fort Washington, Maryland. A new car dealership is usually not the first place you look for a project car for your next build, but the nicely appointed car was brought in on a trade for a new Chevy and was priced right. David knew the minute he laid eyes on it that he could massage this ride into a car he could call his own; and possibly even a show winner. He quickly struck a deal with the sales team; there was no turning back.

The Camaro was in excellent shape, with a fresh paintjob and some substantial rubber out back. It was back-halved by the previous owner and had a ladder bar suspension installed already. So he got on it immediately, cleaning up some aesthetic flaws on the Chevy and putting his touch on some of the pertinent parts. He added a tunnel-ram to the car’s big-block setup, some tubular A-arms up front, and installed some sweet Mickey Thompson meats out back. It was a nice start but David was just trying to avoid the inevitable. What he really wanted was a “Big-Block, Chromed-out, Giant-Sized Blower Motor” sticking out of the hood. It was something he had always dreamed of, and deep down he knew he wouldn’t be happy until he had one for his very own Camaro.

So David did the right thing and sat down with his wife to explain why he needed a 468-cubic-inch engine sticking out of the hood of his car. For some this would not go so well, but luckily David’s wife, JoAnn, is a saint, and agreed that this potent Chevy powerplant would make them both very happy. What a wife! Now armed with her blessing, David quickly made a phone call to Big Al’s Toy Box up in Connecticut and ordered the engine that would put this Camaro over the top … and then some.

The engine started out as a 454, which was then punched out to 468. The four-bolt main block is loaded with an Eagle 4340 steel crank, Eagle H-beam rods, and Probe 8.5:1 forged pistons. A Comp Cam 651/651 roller cam and double roller timing chain get the valves jumping in tune. The cylinders are topped with Chevrolet Performance 115cc rectangular port aluminum heads built up with Manley 2.25/1.88 stainless steel valves, Comp Cams Pro Magnum stainless roller rockers, chrome-moly retainers and locks, and a set of Comp Cams hardened pushrods. ARP screw-in studs and head bolts hold it all together.

A Mallory ignition gets the spark out on this beast. A polished aluminum timing cover and chrome oil pan add a little bling to the build. But the biggest chunk of eye candy here is the polished 8-71 billet supercharger sitting up top, complete with a Funny Car-style 3-inch billet drivebelt guard. Feeding this machine is a pair of 750-cfm Quick Fuel blow-through carburetors. It dyno’d at a healthy 800+ horsepower, and that was before the 200hp shot of nitrous was added. Engine tuning and nitrous work was done by Jim Lumpower. All this muscle car goodness is fed through a rebuilt Turbo 400 to do the shifting.

The ample power is then fed to a hefty Ford 9-inch rear out back, stuffed with 4.30 gears and spinning Moroso axles. They put the power to a pair of super-wide Cragar SS 15×15 wheels (custom built by Cragar through Jegs) shod in 31×18 Mickey Thompson meats to grip the track when they are called on. The car rides on Wilwood disc brakes and QA1 coilover shocks all the way around. Francis Johnson built the Camaro a custom 3-inch stainless exhaust system with Flowmaster 44 Series mufflers. The added wheelie bars are a must when taking this thing out for a quarter-mile spin.

When it came to the interior, David had some interesting ideas, and he smartly followed his first instinct. The upholstery was stitched with top-of-the-line rawhide leather, with beautiful boa skin accents and inlays throughout. Even the rollcage is wrapped in leather, to keep it all consistent. Out back, the trunk was done to match. All work was done by Ace Upholstery in Mechanicsville, Maryland. The leather hues work well with the deep Atlas Red paint scheme, which was laid down by the previous owner.

Today, David can sit back and just take it all in, knowing he built the car of his dreams. Special thanks go out to many people, including his son Joe who helped out on the build.
