Truck Driver Day
Professional truck drivers are honored and celebrated today with Truck Driver Day. In the United States, a driver is considered to be a truck driver when their vehicle has a gross vehicle weight—the weight of the vehicle loaded—of at least 26,000 pounds. They must obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) to drive a vehicle of this weight. Employers often require their drivers to take a safety training program, and some also require a high school degree or GED.
Truck drivers carry all kinds of freight—livestock, food, canned goods, liquids, packages, and vehicles—all across the United States and the world. They often have to load and unload their freight and must inspect their trucks before taking to the road. Truck drivers often ship products to stores, and some may have to undertake sales duties. Many truck drivers work long hours. Some may have daily local routes that keep them close to home, while others may have routes and schedules that often change, and many have to be away from home for an extended amount of time.
Some trucks were on the road in the United States prior to World War I. Trucks continued to be used and developed during the war, and by 1920 there were more than a million trucks on the roads of America. Trucking continued to expand over the following decade, on account of advancements such as the introduction of the diesel engine, improved rural roads, the introduction of power brakes and steering, and the standardization of truck and trailer sizes. In the 1930s, a number of trucking regulations were implemented, and the American Trucking Association was created. Trucking activity increased in the 1950s and '60s, in large part because of the creation of the Interstate Highway System. Regulations on the weight of trucks continued to be updated.
The heyday of the truck driver came in the 1960s and '70s. At the time, a wide swath of the public viewed truck drivers as modern-day cowboys or outlaws. The rise of "trucker culture" was signaled with the proliferation of trucker songs and films, the wearing of plaid shirts and trucker hats by the public, and the wide use of CB radios and CB slang. The romanticization of trucker culture subsided by the dawn of the 1980s.
Many truckers went on strike during the energy crises of 1973 and 1979, after the cost of fuel rose. The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 partially deregulated the industry. As a result, many new trucking companies were started. Trucker union membership also drastically declined, leading to lower pay. But the deregulation did reduce consumer costs, and it increased production and competition in the trucking industry. By the twenty-first century, trucking dominated the freight industry. In 2006, there were 26 million trucks on America's roads, which hauled about 70 percent of the country's freight. Truckers continue to play a prominent role in keeping the wheels of the economy turning, and for the hard work they put in to make this happen, they are honored and celebrated today!
How to Observe Truck Driver Day
Some ideas of ways the day could be spent include:
If you are a truck driver, get out there and drive! Or, take the day off. It should be up to you!
Wave to truckers or make a gesture like you are pulling a truck horn in an attempt to get them to honk their horns.
Thank a truck driver. Tell them thanks in person or make a social media post of thanks. Include the hashtag #TruckDriverDay.
Become a truck driver.
Listen to some truck driving songs such as "Convoy" and "Truck Drivin' Man."
Watch some truck driving films such as Smokey and the Bandit, Convoy, and Big Rig.
Talk on a CB radio.
Eat at a truck stop.
Attend or take part in the National Truck Driving Championships, which are held around the time as Truck Driver Day.
Read a book about trucking or truckers such as Trucking Country: The road to America's Wal-Mart Economy or The Long Haul: A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road.
Explore the websites of organizations and companies related to the industry such as American Trucker, Truckers News, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the American Trucking Associations, and the Women in Trucking Association.

Things were pretty mellow regarding Japanese mid-size bike development in the mid-1960’s. There were two-stroke 250’s, 350’s and a 500 from three makers and Honda started offering the CB450 about 1965. Then in late 1968 we opened our copies of Cycle and Cycle World to photos from European industry motorcycle shows and saw the Honda CB750! Four megaphone mufflers, the brilliant engine sticking out from under the candy apple tank and that glorious machined brake rotor up front. If you were riding around 1969, even if you loved British bikes or Harleys, you couldn’t help but stare.
In that era the 750cc bike, a “45,” was king and what was road raced and dirt tracked in most places. In fact the Dick Mann ridden Honda CB750 won the Daytona 200 in 1970. But Honda realized riders might want something a bit smaller, more manageable. In 1972 they offered the CB350F and CB500 Four, both in-line fours mimicking the big CB750 though with vertical cylinders. Later each was punched out to 400 and 550ccs respectively. The 350’s and 400’s were sweet, but typical of in-line fours of the era, you had an 8500 to 10,000 RPM redline and you’d better use it to get some acceleration. The CB400F’s remain very collectible with their 4 into 1 pipe and decked seat, production Cafe Racers of sorts. The more docile four pipe 350F is collectible too, but the exhaust systems are very prone to rust through and maybe one in five good bikes have stock exhausts any longer.
The 350F rolling chassis is pretty typical for the era, a mix of tubes and stampings. Like its big brothers, it has a disk brake in front, and drum in the rear, free standing tach and speedo, flip gas cap, dual seat. As 350cc bikes, this 350F, the CB/CL 350K3 and SL350 Motosports were sold in dealerships side by side in this era. The F was sold 1972 to 1974. Of all the Honda fours, the 350 is likely the smoothest running, essentially vibration free.
This 1974 Honda CB350F with an aftermarket four-into-one exhaust was donated to the National Motorcycle Museum by Suzi Bellville and Hall of Fame inductee Eddie Fisher and we’re happy to have it on display.

July 8th | Mexico | You actually handed money over for this job...
Daniel from IAS Labs dropped me an email about updating his 1975 Brasilia and its front suspension. He used the word "hacked" in his initial email. I wasn't ready for the pictures that came back.
If ANY experience, for reference, I have 21+ years, resonates with you, head this warning. If you hire someone and you don't vet their work, you could actually hand money over for this kind of work. Please, don't risk your life or the lives around you even thinking of driving around the streets with so many issues. Please.
With that said, Daniel asked for the PRO's expertise on what it would update this Brasilia and bring safety, enjoyment, and quality of ride, back to the forefront of this Classic VW. The Answer. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam.
With the vehicle having cosmic wheels and the current 5" narrowed beam, Daniel was having rubbing problem on the inner fenderwells and he also did not like how much it tucked inside the fenders. We opted to do the 2" narrowed version to check as many boxes as possible. Here are the specs on the beam;
Stage 2 PRObuilt Air Ride Ball Joint Beam Complete - 2203
The BEST way to add Air Ride to a Classic Volkswagen Type 1 with ball joint front suspension (1966 through 1977), is by installing a Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam. When the PRO's say complete, they mean complete. You will not need anything in addition to this assembly. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam is built on the Ultimate Beam platform. It's made in stock width and up to four inches narrower than OEM to allow for wider wheels, drop spindles, and disc brakes, that add track width. The complete beam comes as you see it, spindle to spindle, with an entire PRObuilt steering system installed and ready to bolt in and go.
What's included? This Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam is spindle to spindle, built in any configuration, from stock to four inch narrowed. It comes powder-coated, satin black, ready to install. The front end comes complete with the following;
New Ultimate Adjustable Beam
Through Rods
New Tie rods
New Air Ride Shocks
New Drum Drop Spindles (CB Performance/EMPI) or OEM Spindles
New Steering Dampener
New Hardware
New Grease Zerks
Premium Tie rod Ends
Premium Ball Joints
PRObuilt Steering Box filled with Corn Head Grease
Reconditioned pitman/drop arm/clamp
PRObuilt Control Arms
New eccentrics
What's recommended?
When it comes to how narrow you need, check out this article here. The PRO's recommend a FOUR Inch narrowed for most applications as it allows for just about any wheel to fit and tuck under the fenders.
If you are going for the dropped look and want to run either Airkewld's GEN 2 Disc Brake kit or your factory drums opt for the DRUM Drop Spindles. If you keep your Factory Disc Brakes (4 lug), opt for the DISC Drop Spindles. If you are keeping the drop moderate, a stock height spindle for the drum or factory disc is available. If you want to run the disc brakes you already have, click here.
Install kit (saves time, ensuring you have everything needed to do the job right) New beam bolts, upper and lower body pads, and inspection plate) .
If you want to make this beam install even more complete, maybe installing a GEN 2 Disc Brake kit might make sense. To have the PRO's install them, you will need to add the labor to do that here, then choose your disc brake kit here.
You will need an Air Management Kit (AMK) to lift and lower the vehicle on demand. If you are only doing front air ride, you can use a 2 valve AMK and use one valve per corner. This will eliminate sway left to right when turning. Trust me. If you are going to do full air ride, then the 4 valve AMK is what you need. (If you decide to use a different manufacture for air management, the PRO's will be UNABLE to tech support any issues you have as we will be unable to replicate the issue in house).
If your steering coupler from your column to your steering box has seen better days, the PRO's suggest the OEM PRObuilt Steering Box Coupler found here.
Kewl Features
American made
7.5 inches of up-and-down movement
Taller shock towers allow for the use of shocks that will work with any ride height adjustment
Industries finest packaging to ensure it will arrive to you unscathed
FAQ
Do I need to do body mods to install this beam? No. The inside dimension is 29 13/16". That gives a clearance of 1/16" on each side.
How do you narrow the beam 4" when I only have 1/2 inch on each side of my stock beam? We utilize the outer ends of the tubes and gusset outwards to give us the needed space. Here is a video that explains it.
Do I need to send in a core? No. The PRO's have a few options for your cores. Check them out here.
Will I need anything in addition to this assembly? No. It's as complete as it comes from the factory.
The front end will be coated apart and assembled to keep the clean look with new hardware. It's set to the medium height setting so that you can adjust it to your liking. It's pre-greased, and alignment will set in a rough application for shipping.
Financing is available during checkout.
What do you think of the old beam build and what do you think of the new beam build?

Edison Motors does not hide anything we’re doing, we believe that if EV technology is going to be implemented in the real world then the information on how the trucks work needs to be freely shared.
We put everything we do and built online for people to see. If a mechanic is going to service it, and trucker is going to operate it, they need to know how it works. We freely share what every nut and bolt does on our truck.
We do not hide our technology, we want it to be seen and adopted.
The L series is designed to go into the places no other electric truck dares to, and it’s designed to haul more weight than any other electric truck while it does it.
These means from day 1 we designed the Edison truck to be easy to service in every aspect.
We consider all the small details. For example: not using huck bolts and using nuts to allow field service of parts. Huck bolts need a torch to remove, regular grade 8 bolts can use a wrench.
We consider the large things: We promise that no computer system we design will ever go into a dealership to have its code read, all fault codes will be available to the driver with a written description of the fault and trouble shooting hints when possible.
Every truck will come with a parts list of every single item put into the truck, what store we sourced that part from and the part number of the item. This makes sure that your mechanics can find the right part anytime they need.
If you’ll notice almost none of the parts used on these trucks are actually made by Edison. We use common parts available at any truck parts store like CBS, Fort Garry or Fleet Brake. This means you don’t have to rely on Edison service and parts department to send you items, you can get your truck fixed as soon as possible.
Our very ethos in starting this was to build a truck designed to last like our 1969 Kenworth or 1971 Pacific that’s hauled logs and equipment for over 50 years.
We have studied these old trucks to find out exactly how they can be running 50 years later and what it comes down to is that every part is easy to fix, easy to replace and designed as simply as possible.
We believe that you should only have to buy an L series Edison once.
If you’re worried that we’ll run out of customers to sell to: there’s 400,000 Vocational trucks made every single year, we don’t mind not having to replace the trucks we sell you.
I’ve got mad respect for these guys. This is how you do ethical engineering.

BMW X5 Factory Maintenance: Comprehensive Guide to Keeping Your SUV in Peak Condition
Tumblr media
The BMW X5 is a luxury SUV that combines robust performance with sophisticated design. To keep this vehicle operating at its best, adhering to the factory-scheduled maintenance plan is crucial. This comprehensive guide provides an in-depth look at the essential services required to maintain the performance, safety, and longevity of your BMW X5.
Understanding BMW's Factory Maintenance Schedule
BMW’s factory maintenance schedule, often referred to as BMW Condition-Based Service (CBS), is designed to monitor the condition of critical components and alert you when service is needed. The system uses sensors and algorithms to determine the optimal timing for maintenance tasks, ensuring that your vehicle receives care when it’s most needed.
The CBS system tracks various elements, including:
    Engine oil quality
    Brake pad wear
    Brake fluid condition
    Coolant levels
    Cabin microfilter status
Regular service intervals are also pre-programmed into the system, typically aligning with mileage milestones or specific time periods, ensuring that essential maintenance tasks are not overlooked.
Key Maintenance Services for the BMW X5
    Engine Oil and Filter Change
Regular oil changes are vital for keeping the engine running smoothly. BMW recommends changing the engine oil and filter approximately every 10,000 miles or 12 months, depending on driving conditions. The engine oil lubricates and cools the engine’s moving parts, reducing friction and preventing wear. Using BMW-approved synthetic oil ensures optimal performance and longevity.
Technical Insight: The X5’s engine uses a high-performance synthetic oil that provides better temperature stability and longer life compared to conventional oils. Regular oil changes also help to remove contaminants that can accumulate and cause sludge, which can lead to engine damage.
    Brake System Maintenance
The brake system in the BMW X5 is equipped with sensors that monitor the wear of brake pads. When the pads reach a certain level of wear, the CBS system will alert you that it’s time for replacement. Typically, brake pad replacement is needed every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on driving habits.
In addition to replacing brake pads, the brake fluid should be flushed and replaced every two years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can reduce braking efficiency and lead to corrosion within the braking system.
Technical Insight: BMW’s advanced braking system, including ABS and Dynamic Stability Control, relies heavily on the condition of the brake fluid. Regular brake fluid changes help maintain optimal braking performance and ensure that the hydraulic system functions correctly, especially under high-stress conditions.
    Coolant and Cooling System Service
The cooling system in the BMW X5 is crucial for preventing the engine from overheating. BMW recommends inspecting the coolant level and condition regularly, with a full coolant flush and replacement every 3 to 4 years. The coolant not only helps to regulate engine temperature but also prevents corrosion within the cooling system components.
Technical Insight: The BMW X5 uses a specific coolant formula designed to protect the aluminum components of the engine and radiator. Using the correct type of coolant is essential to avoid chemical reactions that could lead to corrosion or deposits, which can obstruct the cooling system.
    Transmission and Drivetrain Maintenance
The BMW X5’s transmission and drivetrain are engineered for precision and durability. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure smooth gear shifts and optimal power delivery. Transmission fluid should be inspected and, if necessary, replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Additionally, the transfer case fluid in all-wheel-drive models should be changed periodically to maintain the system’s performance.
Technical Insight: The X5’s transmission fluid operates under high pressure and temperature conditions. Over time, the fluid can degrade, leading to potential shifting issues or transmission wear. Regular fluid changes help maintain the transmission’s hydraulic pressure and cooling efficiency, extending the life of the transmission components.
    Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter ensures that the air inside the vehicle remains clean and free of pollutants. BMW recommends replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. A clogged filter can reduce airflow through the HVAC system, causing strain on the blower motor and reducing the system’s efficiency.
Technical Insight: The cabin air filter in the BMW X5 is particularly important for filtering out fine particulates, such as pollen and dust, that can affect air quality inside the vehicle. Regular replacement ensures that the climate control system operates efficiently and maintains a comfortable cabin environment.
    Inspection of Belts and Hoses
Belts and hoses are vital for the operation of various engine components, including the alternator, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. These components should be inspected during routine maintenance for signs of wear, cracks, or leaks. Typically, serpentine belts need replacement every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
Technical Insight: The X5’s engine uses a serpentine belt system that powers multiple accessories. Over time, the belt can stretch and lose tension, leading to slippage or noise. Regular inspections help prevent unexpected belt failures, which can cause accessory systems to stop functioning.
The Importance of Regular Maintenance
Adhering to the factory maintenance schedule for your BMW X5 is not just about preserving vehicle performance—it’s also about safety and reliability. Regular maintenance helps to identify and address potential issues before they become major problems, reducing the risk of breakdowns and costly repairs.
Moreover, maintaining a comprehensive service record enhances the resale value of your BMW X5. Prospective buyers are more likely to pay a premium for a vehicle with a documented history of regular maintenance, as it indicates that the vehicle has been well cared for.
Conclusion
The BMW X5 is a luxury SUV that demands precise and consistent care to perform at its best. Following the factory maintenance schedule ensures that your vehicle remains reliable, safe, and efficient. Whether it’s routine oil changes, brake service, or more complex transmission maintenance, staying on top of these tasks will keep your X5 in peak condition for years to come. For the best results, always seek out a certified BMW service center where technicians have the expertise and tools to care for your vehicle according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

However, maintaining your BMW’s optimal performance requires more than just driving it with care; it also involves regular condition inspections and adhering to a meticulous maintenance schedule. To ensure that your BMW continues to deliver the exhilarating driving experience it’s known for, here are some expert tips for performing regular condition inspections.
1. Follow BMW's Condition-Based Service (CBS) System
BMW vehicles come equipped with an advanced Condition-Based Service (CBS) system that monitors the health of key components and systems in real time. The CBS system alerts you when it’s time for specific maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, brake inspections, or tire rotations, based on your driving habits and conditions. Staying on top of these alerts is one of the most effective ways to ensure that your BMW performs at its best.
Make sure to consult your vehicle’s onboard system regularly for updates on necessary maintenance. Ignoring these alerts can lead to premature wear on critical components, which may result in costly repairs and reduced performance over time.
2. Monitor Oil Levels and Schedule Regular Changes
Engine oil plays a vital role in keeping your BMW’s engine lubricated, reducing friction, and preventing overheating. Failing to maintain proper oil levels can lead to engine wear and reduced performance, and in severe cases, engine failure.
BMW’s CBS system will notify you when it’s time for an oil change, but it’s also important to manually check the oil level between services. Use a dipstick or the electronic oil level indicator in newer models to ensure that the oil is within the recommended range. BMW recommends using high-quality synthetic oil specifically designed for your engine type, which can enhance engine efficiency and prolong the life of your vehicle.
3. Check and Maintain Your Tires
Your BMW’s tires are critical to both performance and safety. Worn or improperly inflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency, affect handling, and increase the risk of accidents. Regular tire inspections are essential for ensuring proper traction and preventing uneven tire wear.
Tire Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly to ensure it matches BMW’s recommended PSI levels. Underinflated tires can cause poor handling, while overinflated tires can lead to uneven tread wear.
Tire Tread: Monitor tire tread depth using a tread gauge to ensure your tires have sufficient grip. Shallow tread can compromise handling and braking performance, particularly in wet conditions.
Alignment and Balancing: Have your tires aligned and balanced regularly to prevent uneven wear and improve ride comfort. Misaligned wheels can lead to premature tire wear and affect your vehicle’s steering.
4. Inspect the Brakes
BMWs are known for their responsive braking systems, but to maintain their effectiveness, regular brake inspections are essential. Worn brake pads, rotors, or fluid can compromise stopping power, which not only reduces performance but also endangers safety.
Brake Pads and Rotors: Inspect brake pads and rotors for wear every 10,000 to 15,000 miles or sooner if you hear squealing or grinding sounds. Replacing worn components before they fail can improve braking efficiency and avoid damage to other parts of the braking system.
Brake Fluid: BMW recommends changing brake fluid every two years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, reducing its effectiveness and leading to potential brake failure if neglected.
5. Check the Battery
Your BMW’s battery is essential for powering the electrical system, including the start-stop functionality, infotainment, and safety features. A weak or dying battery can cause your BMW to perform sluggishly or even fail to start.
Visual Inspection: Regularly check for corrosion on the battery terminals and ensure they are securely connected. Clean any corrosion and tighten loose connections to maintain a healthy electrical flow.
Battery Testing: Have your battery tested annually, especially before extreme weather conditions, to ensure it can handle the demand placed on it by your vehicle’s advanced electrical systems.
6. Pay Attention to Warning Lights
Modern BMWs are equipped with a sophisticated network of sensors that monitor various systems and components. When something goes wrong, a warning light will illuminate on your dashboard. Whether it’s the check engine light, low tire pressure, or brake warning, it’s essential not to ignore these indicators.
Address any warning lights promptly by scheduling a diagnostic service at an authorized BMW service center. Early detection and repair can prevent small issues from escalating into major, costly problems.
7. Maintain the Cooling System
BMW’s high-performance engines generate a lot of heat, making the cooling system critical for maintaining optimal operating temperatures. A malfunctioning cooling system can lead to engine overheating, which can cause serious damage and impair performance.
Coolant Levels: Check coolant levels regularly and top off with the recommended BMW coolant if necessary. Low coolant levels can cause overheating and damage internal engine components.
Radiator and Hoses: Inspect the radiator and hoses for leaks or signs of wear. Replacing worn or damaged hoses early can prevent overheating and ensure your engine stays cool under all driving conditions.
8. Service the Transmission
The transmission is one of the most critical components in your BMW’s drivetrain, responsible for delivering power to the wheels. Regular transmission maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, helps keep your vehicle running smoothly.
Transmission Fluid: Ensure your transmission fluid is changed at the intervals specified by BMW, typically every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Low or dirty transmission fluid can lead to shifting issues and even transmission failure.
Shifting Performance: Pay attention to how your BMW shifts gears. If you notice any delays, slipping, or rough transitions, it may be time for a professional inspection.
Conclusion
Prolonging the performance of your BMW involves more than routine driving; it requires diligent attention to its condition through regular inspections and timely maintenance. By following the CBS system, monitoring essential components like tires, brakes, oil levels, and the cooling system, you can ensure that your BMW continues to deliver the high-performance experience it’s known for. With expert maintenance, you can enjoy years of smooth, powerful driving and preserve the value of your luxury vehicle.
