You used to list the books you've been reading every few weeks but I haven't seen a post like that in a minute. Anything good that you've been reading?
It has been a long time since I last posted one of those lists of recent reads -- probably about six months, so I'm not going to list everything I've read since then. And I don't remember exactly what I included last time, so hopefully I don't double-dip.
•Martin Van Buren: America's First Politician [2024] by James M. Bradley (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) If you want to make me happy, just publish a new book about one of America's more obscure Presidents. And in December 2024, we got a new biography of Martin Van Buren with fresh research from sources not previously available to earlier biographers, resulting in an updated, comprehensive book about Van Buren that now becomes one of the definitive biographies of our eighth President.
•Lincoln vs. Davis: The War of the Presidents [2024] by Nigel Hamilton (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) I'm also an easy mark for books about Jefferson Davis -- not out of any sort of affinity for him or the Confederacy, of course -- but just because of his unique place in history as an American President who also wasn't really an American President (although, technically, he was.) Throw Lincoln into the mix and you don't have to sell me very hard on this book.
•Night of Power: The Betrayal of the Middle East [2024] by Robert Fisk (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) I wish Fisk had lived to write about the latest Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but it doesn't require much imagination to know what he would have thought about it: he wrote honestly, critically, and with deep understanding about the subject for 40+ years while reporting from the heart of the struggle in the Middle East.
•The Garfield Orbit [1978] by Margaret Leech and Harry J. Brown (BOOK)
•The World and Richard Nixon [1987] by C.L. Sulzberger (BOOK)
•John Lewis: A Life [2024] by David Greenberg [2024] (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Land Between the Rivers: A 5,000-Year History of Iraq [2024] by Bartle Bull (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•The Hollow Crown: Shakespeare On How Leaders Rise, Rule, and Fall [2023] by Eliot A. Cohen (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•A Very Personal Presidency: Lyndon Johnson in the White House [1968] by Hugh Sidey (BOOK)
•The Jesuit Disruptor: A Personal Portrait of Pope Francis [2024] by Michael W. Higgins (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The President: A Minute-by-Minute Account of a Week in the Life of Gerald Ford [1975] by John Hersey (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Lone Star: The Life of John Connally [1989] by James Reston Jr. (BOOK)
•The Showman: Inside the Invasion That Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky [2024] by Simon Shuster (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Alexander at the End of the World: The Forgotten Final Years of Alexander the Great [2024] by Rachel Kousser (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•American Gothic: The Story of America's Legendary Theatrical Family -- Junius, Edwin, and John Wilkes Booth [1992] by Gene Smith (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Pathfinder: John Charles Frémont and the Course of American Empire [2002] by Tom Chaffin (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•A Brief History of the World in 47 Borders: Surprising Stories Behind the Lines on Our Maps [2024] by Jonn Elledge (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Eisenhower For Our Time [2024] by Steven Wagner (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•The Ends of the Earth: A Journey to the Frontiers of Anarchy [1996] by Robert D. Kaplan (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat [1983] by Ryszard Kapuściński [Translated by William R. Brand & Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand] (BOOK)
•A Heartbeat Away: The Investigation and Resignation of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew [1974] by Richard M. Cohen and Jules Witcover (BOOK)
•American Roulette: The History and Dilemma of the Vice Presidency [Revised & Updated, 1972] by Donald Young (BOOK)
•Centers of Power in the Arab Gulf States [2024] by Kristian Coates Ulrichsen (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Formation of the UAE: State-Building and Arab Nationalism in the Middle East [2024] by Kristi Barnwell (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Iranian-Saudi Rivalry Since 1979: In the Words of Kings and Clerics [2023] by Talal Mohammad (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Wrong Stuff: How the Soviet Space Program Crashed and Burned [2024] by John Strausbaugh (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)

Books I finished in January 2025!
Tumblr media
1. One Corpse Too Many (by Ellis Peters)
The second Brother Cadfael book where the 12th-century monk solves a mysterious murder during a brutal civil war.
The first of these books was solid, but the resolution of its mystery left me lukewarm. But this one was great across the board. The cast was great, the mystery was compelling, the resolution was exciting and tense, and I have a crush on Hugh Beringar now! It’s everything I could have wanted from a medieval monk murder mystery story. I’m totally sold on checking out the rest of the series now.
2. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (by Stephen King)
One part Stephen King memoir, one part writing advice based on his success and artistic approach.
For a book that King says wasn’t supposed to be autobiographical, those were the best parts. King’s life makes for a good story and he tells it well. The actual writing advice, the meat of the book, is where I’m a bit mixed on. It’s mostly solid, with some that’s valuable as long as you remember it’s coming from this specific author with a specific approach, but occasionally he said stuff that made me think King was a total hack no one should ever listen to. But my own source of inspiration is notably the complete opposite of King’s, so that’s not a surprise lol.
3. Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver--Volume 2 (by Hikaru Sakurai)
The second volume of the light novel supplemental spinoff to a fake trailer for a Fate spinoff that doesn’t exist.
It was much better than Volume 1, but I still didn’t care about any of the characters, and even as a super fan of this franchise's brand of bullshit, I can’t get past the premise of it being a spinoff to a hallucinated and less interesting alternative to a story I already like.
4. Absolution (by Jeff VanderMeer)
The fourth Southern Reach Trilogy book.
It’s a neat supplement to some of my all-time favorite books. The characters here were good, but I didn’t vibe with them as much as the OG cast, even if Lowry is *delightfully*’ horrible--one of the most reader-hostile narrators I’ve ever seen, and I kinda adore it. It was a good read, but I don’t expect it to stick with me like the original three books did and still have. It has reminded me to put VanderMeer’s other books on my TBR, though, so I’ll try to get to those sooner rather than later.
5. Wishful Drinking (by Carrie Fisher)
A comedic Carrie Fisher memoir about growing up in and among the acting business.
Short but sweet. You can feel the one-woman stage show origins, and because of that, it didn't go into as much detail as I would like--though that sounds voyeuristic now that I type it out--so it was a bit disposable. It is also painfully a product of the mid-2000s, often making it dated and annoying rather than actually funny.
6. Emma (by Jane Austen)
Emma Woodhouse’s hobby is matchmaking, and surely nothing could possibly go wrong with that.
It was fine. There was stuff I enjoyed, especially the first quarter or so, but the rest of the book tended to drag. I don’t like Emma enough as a character to carry a book this long, plus I didn’t vibe with the resolution. I’m sure someone’s made a decent two-hour film adaptation that cuts all the downtime without losing much.
7. The Faithless (by C.L. Clark)
After liberating her homeland, former soldier Touraine returns to the empire as an ambassador to preserve her country’s newfound freedom.
The award for the first book of 2025 that I've angrily ranted to friends about on Discord goes to...! This one was a slog. I've lost any scrap of goodwill I had for this series after the first book's disappointing ending. I can't even praise the continuation of the leads' relationship because this sequel neglected anything still compelling about them and furthered the insult by replacing once compelling characters with dull incompetence that rendered the story more laughable than dramatic. I am so happy to DNF this series.
8. Murder in the Mews (by Agatha Christie)
A solid Poirot short story anthology. The first story was great. Second boring. Third good. And fourth okay.
9. The Pairing (by Casey McQuiston)
Theo Flowerday’s vacation gets off to a drastic start when they find out the ex-boyfriend they’re not quite over accidentally booked a seat on the same tour.
A cute and sexy romance. The initial hook really gripped me. Then the rest of the first half almost lost me. But the back half got me back and stuck the landing pretty well. The characters and conflicts are a couple tax brackets too high for my taste, so while I’ve enjoyed the two McQuiston books I’ve read, I’m tentatively going to avoid Red, White & Royal Blue for now ‘cause I KNOW that will ramp that issue up by a thousand lol.
10. Someone You Can Build a Nest In (by John Wiswell)
A classic shapeshifting pseudo-cannibalistic puddle of tentacles and gore meets girl story.
Super fun, delightfully gnarly, but also way more wholesome than I expected. The tongue-in-cheek political commentary from Shesheshen could be a bit too blunt, and for an inhuman puddle who doesn’t understand humans she has shockingly potent emotional intelligence. But those are minor nitpicks for an otherwise good read that I recommend.
11. The Daughter of Doctor Moreau (by Silvia Moreno-Garcia)
A retelling of the HG Wells classic.
Peak. Fire. Raw. Brilliant historical science fiction drama. I have nothing but praise. Compelling cast. Great tension. That ending? OOOOOOOOOH *chef kiss* *chef kiss* and another *chef kiss*! If The Seventh Veil of Salome (also great, go read it) didn’t put everything Silvia Moreno-Garcia has written on my TBR, this has cemented it.
12. Bury Your Gays (by Chuck Tingle)
A gay Hollywood writer is being hunted by his own fictional creations.
Really solid queer horror. It was a bit too “say the theme out loud” for my taste, but that’s not much of a criticism since the fighting against being condemned to subtext is kinda essential to the theme, so that gets a pass even if it isn’t my preferred approach.
13. Monk’s-Hood (by Ellis Peters)
Brother Cadfael’s back, and this time he’s solving a poisoning case!
Another banger. The cast was excellent, the pacing and escalating tension made it a breeze to binge through, and the worldbuilding was incredibly immersive. Without spoilers, the absolution scene at the end got me misty-eyed. There’s an excellent sense of compassion in these books often lacking in other mystery series. I’m really excited to keep reading this series.
14. The Colour of Magic (by Terry Pratchett)
The world’s worst wizard must watch over a tourist.
Oh no… the Discworld fans were right… this one’s mid as hell. Kinda contextualizes why they’re all so weird about reading orders, huh? (don’t worry, I read Guards! Guards! years ago, so I know what to expect from later books in the series--part of why even the stuff I liked about this book didn’t do much for me since I knew how much better it will be once I get a couple more books in). There is some good stuff here, but I never cared about the core story, so all I was left with felt like a bunch of hit-or-miss fantasy parody vignettes.

Who coined the term “blaster?”
I’ve said for years that the first person to use the phrase was Jack Williamson, who also coined the terms “terraforming” and “genetic engineering,” in his Legion of Space novels from 1936. These stories were a highlight of the pre-golden age, F. Orlin Tremaine era of Astounding, just before Campbell took over and kicked off the era we know:
Tumblr media
However, recently, a far older occurrence of the term “blaster” was found, this time, dated to an incredible full decade earlier (1925), by one of the strangest and most mysterious men in all of science fiction history: Nictzin Dyalhis.
Dyalhis is the most mysterious of all of the Weird Tales writers. For starters, very little biographical information about him can concretely be determined. Weird Tales historian and superfan L. Sprague de Camp (who worked hard to get many Weird Tales writers like C.L. Moore and Robert E. Howard published after the magazine ended, saving them from total obscurity in the paperback era), a man who wrote in depth biographies of weird shut ins who left very little personal trails in the real world, like Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, looked into Dyalhis and could find absolutely nothing, except that, as near as he could tell, Nictzin Dyalhis was his real name, as he was of Welsh origin and his first name was derived from the fact his father was obsessed with everything Aztec.
Tumblr media
Dyalhis was not only mysterious, but did not correspond with his contemporaries like C.L. Moore, Lovecraft, or Hugh B. Cave much, and in his entire life, had only 15 published stories. One of them, the Sea Witch, is basically if Haggard’s She got a happy ending (what kids today call a “fix-fic” except it got published and is one of the best horror stories of all time).
Nictzin Dyalhis used the term “blaster” to refer to a ray gun in the 1925 story, “When the Green Star Waned,” but the reason it wasn’t caught until now is that he spelled it “blastor” (which seems wrong to me).
Tumblr media
I was holding my Blastor pointing ahead of me; for as I blundered full upon the monstrosity it upheaved its ugly bulk—how I do not know, for I saw no legs nor did it have wings—to one edge and would have flopped down upon me, but instinctively I slid forward the catch on the tiny Blastor, and the foul thing vanished—save for a few fragments of its edges—smitten into nothingness by the vibration hurled forth from that powerful little disintegrator.

in-progress list of books I read this year (2021)
finished books only. listed in random order, because I’m just trying to write them down as I remember them. Starred are books I particularly enjoyed or felt a connection to in some way. Marks *Water Logic-- Laurie J. Marks *Air Logic-- Laurie J. Marks (I wished this book was like twice as long, mostly because I know it’s the last one) *Summer Sons-- Lee Mandelo (I don’t know if I’d recommend this to other people, but it had a specific and explicit queer masculinity in it that meant a lot to me to see in a published novel) *-The Bone Shard Daughter-- Andrea Stewart *-The Vanished Birds-- Simon Jimenez *-Felix Ever After-- Kacen Callendar  *-In A Lonely Place-- Dorothy B. Hughes *-The Decagon House Murders--  Yukito Ayatsuji -The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu-- Tom Lin -*The House in the Cerulean Sea-- TJ Klune (provided comfort where and when it was needful) -The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet-- Becky Chambers -Star Eater-- Kerstin Hall (where... are... the... trans... people...) -Malice-- Keigo Higashino -Elatsoe-- Darcie Little Badger  -*Witchmark-- C.L. Polk -Stormsong-- C.L. Polk -Soulstar-- C.L. “Patrol For Police Dept.,” Kingston Daily Standard. September 5, 1919. Page 12. --- Commissioners Ask Council to Act on Request --- C.L. Beaupre Appointed in Place of P.C. Hughes, Resigned --- At a meeting of the Police Commissioners held yesterday afternoon, the resignation of P.C. Norman Hughes was accepted and Mr. C. L. Beaupre was appointed in his place. Mr. Beaupre is a Kingstonian and a returned soldier.
The matter of police vehicles was taken up, and the Commissioner decided to request the City Council to again take up the matter, with a view to securing a police patrol for the police department. It is felt that the need for a patrol is an urgent one, and it was hoped that the Council would act on the matter.

Hugh B. Cave’s “Murgunstrumm” is easily one of the all-time best of the pulp-era vampire horror yarns. The reason Hugh B. Cave was so incredible was that his stories have the surreal ambience of a waking nightmare. His best story is either Murgunstrumm or the Cult of the White Ape. Unlike other horror writers of his milieu like Clark Ashton Smith (who was fascinated by unique settings and prehuman history) or C.L. Moore (who was more about transplanting horror to space) or Lovecraft (who had a view of the universe that only an internet posting agoraphobe shut in could come up with, which is why I suspect he’s still popular now), Hugh B. Cave was more about classic horror elements, like zombies, voodoo, vampires, wolfmen, mad scientists. He wrote about evil jungle islands and ghost ships.
Hugh B. Cave was also one of the only pulp horror writers to have a notable sex drive, his stories always had shapely women.
He’s also one of the only two pulp writers who’s life actually coincided with mine and I met before he passed on (the other was Jack Williamson). By the time of his death, he was a regional Caribbean and Florida Keys writer. Incidentally, I’ve often argued that was the trajectory for weird fiction writers: they transition into being regional authors. For instance, just before his death, Robert E. Howard ditched Conan and horror and was becoming mostly a Texas regional author.
My one encounter with Hugh B. Cave, then in his 90s and super-alert, was so weird I hesitate to even share it. He was giving a lecture for aspiring writers and midway through discussing how to get an audience’s attention he went on a “weird uncle at Thanksgiving” jag about how psychology was entirely a con-game for suckers and wasn’t real science at all. I managed to actually sit down with Hugh B. Cave’s biographer a few years ago at a pulp gathering to ask what she made of all this - was he a scientologist? Why was he so hostile to psychology and to my shock, she was just as baffled as I was about that outburst and said that the only explanation she can think of was that he had some lingering scars from his divorce.

Shakespeare Myth
Titan attacks Saturn, his younger brother, and threatens to strike him…
But Vesta stayed it coming, and withal Came Ceres and Sibylla thrusting thither: They hug young Saturn, but on Titan fall, Thundering on him with clamours; altogether, The younger brother they their sovereign call, And bid the elder pack, they care not wither. The people second them. Thus in disgrace, The stigmaticis forced…
