Actor B.D. Wong collects chiming clocks, vintage grease cans and old sewing drawers, among other things. This shelving unit was designed for him, and built from repurposed wood and his collection of sewing drawers and old yardsticks.

When he bought this fabulous loft, that he filled with his eclectic collections, its barrel-vaulted brick ceiling was covered in plaster. And, the apartment had previously been a sweat shop, a Yiddish theater and a porn theater. Plus, the former owner had given it his own particular stamp, with silk wallpaper and silver paint. Wong has since sold the loft. Why do these wealthy people buy and fix up these fabulous places, then sell them?

This wire locker storage unit was found online, the bronze front doors came from a bank in Philadelphia, by way of Demolition Depot, the architectural salvage store.

The mahogany French doors and shutters that divide the loft came from Demolition Depot, the 1916 Steinway was bought from an estate sale and refurbished by Beethoven Pianos in Manhattan.

These office doors were bought from an old office building called the Puck Building.

This shallow “closet” holds a collection of hats and keys.

The kitchen cabinets are faced in zinc, the island top and counters are honed black granite and the shop stools were found online at an industrial supply company.

Massages For the Masses

You know, I really hate chain massage spas. They are the WORST. My experiences are based on getting gift certificates from relatives (you think I'd buy a session myself?! Did you?!) I much prefer the smaller studios run by one woman. For women's massage therapy, I stick with someone I know.

The big places brought massage into the mainstream (or so we’re told). I mean, every mall had a massage place and the massage chairs in the courtyards and those shady places in every town that opens at 11 PM. So, yeah, I don't think they really brought anything new. But they did bring a lot of mediocre massages and headache-inducing customer service.

It's like the Arby's of burgers. They're good, but not great, and can even do you weeks of harm, as in loose bowels.

For massages for PMS, which I'm finding is a real thing now, I go local. I found this girl from the bulletin board at the Center before the pandemic. She and I hit it off right away, as we're both super-huge Harry Potter fans, or Muggles to those in the know. Anyway, I learned from her that AMTA is a professional organization for massage therapists that are the tops in their field. (She's a member.) This is where I can't stand this girl. She just BSes like water was coming out of her mouth. I really think she made it up. Either way, she provides an amazing massage experience. She does stop talking, but I have to to tell her to. I don't care, as it's my time and my money.

Her name is Abbey. She's lanky, about 6'4", very homely, long face, red hair, muscles EVERYwhere. I saw her photos from Belize, and man, is she cut! I think she has a 64 pack!! (Ill, that would actually look gross!) She's a lean, mean, massaging and healing machine! lol And, boy, does she get to work. I sometimes need a back massage because my back hurts from the shoulders to my tailbone. I am also interested in getting prenatal massages once I have a baby. (I am definitely going to be a Mom one day!) I want to be one of those super-dyke moms I see in the Village, hair in rubber bands, frumpy as forks, with sandals or Keds, and not giving a spoon (or a fork!), if you know what I mean.

The real issue is this: I do get PMS. It is a real thing. I do have a formal diagnosis for PMDD. I can even get a prescription for medical marijuana. Instead, I am opting for massage sessions. It's an in-home massage, meaning it happens in Abbey's basement apartment (and not MY basement apartment, to be clear!)

Wow! This post is meandering. Getting back to the topic (which is what now?!) I think I have to take Abbey home with me and let her live in the front storage room. It has a window. It's pretty big. I can imagine getting massages (in lieu of rent) every evening after a hard day's life. Ahhhhhh.....

Massage for women is a whole different ballgame. A whole different BALLPARK, even! Men, they really just like to be pounded (At least the gay dudes admit this! lol) and for the therapists to use tons of pressure. A woman needs a more nuanced massage. The quality of touch matters. Abbey is great. She even takes credit cards! :P

Now, I know those chain spas really have no soul! Abbey's studio has such heart, she has personal photos up all over the place, and LED candles and waterfalls and just this super plush carpeting in the front room where you check in.

The lighting is soft. The hanging plants bring forth life and good vibes. And, her touch is like heaven. I swear, she has the softest hands. I changed my niece’s diaper, and her butt isn't as soft! lol Abbey is a Godsend. Unfortunately, she isn't taking new clients, and she's actually going to be stopping in about a year. She's moving on in life, and wants to go back to university to pursue a degree in education. (She wants to teach rug rats.)

Therapeutic Massage is definitely an under-rated way to heal. Everyone thinks of the chiropractor and the acupuncturist, but there's actually more research and scientific support for massage therapy. For the record, Abbey is not my type. She is more like the angelic type of girl, maybe the type that was religious a few generations ago, maybe became a nun or something. She looks like she'd be at home on the prairie doing laundry all day, she just has that long-suffering look. But don't be fooled, she's actually a really motivated activist and advocates for women's rights, donating her time to like ten charities that help women.

Now, massage for prenatal women is a whole different reality. Abby knows all about PMS massage. She doesn't have any formal training in that area, but she really knows her stuff. She's been a massage therapist for over ten years. But she does NOT work with prenatal clients. She refers them to another therapist. Her name is Kate. Kate took Abbey's practice over when Abbey went home for her brother's wedding, and another time she broke her foot. Oh, also she went to Aruba. So I know Katie, and she's OK, but at the end of the session, I wonder what I paid for. I felt like I was being patted softly, and I actually need a good, feminine feel, plus tons of pressure!

That's when I last used my Christmas Gift Card for a chain place. Katie was covering, and I just wasn't feeling it. The chain session was no better, plus the lousy therapist only worked for a total of 47 minutes. Very sad. Worse yet, Abbey (annoyingly!) told Kate that I was going with her once Abbey retired. WHAT? How about asking ME first? It's going to still be at Abbey's house, oddly enough, but I was going there for ABBEY and not the four walls.

In any case, PMS massage is about as useful as it gets, in terms of when to go for a session. Twelve in a year is hardly spendthrift, and is well worth it, considering all that I've learned reading the massage-related health studies. Plus, subjectively, it just feels right. If there's a single time I'm gritting my teeth, sweating, feeling like I need a hug, ready to paint the house, wanting to get down with my spouse, get drunk, exercise, eat, fast, meditate, feel the timelessness, get migraines, feel edgy and tense and nervous for no reason, have my hair stand on edge, and the wind blowing hurts, getting hot then cold then nauseous, worn out and energized at the same time. That's my PMDD. I need sessions of massage therapy during this time, and I just wish it were part of my health care plan. I don't see that coming anytime soon, though. But, who knows?

You know, Abbey has been getting on my nerves lately. Trying to sell me some essential oils. Not my thing. I think I've had it with those two. In my book, they're both worth leaving in the past. Onto better and brighter things, and people!
