okay, i'm going to elaborate on what i said about how you can't convince me that deuce spade isn't directly inspired by jim hawkins, because i can't believe i haven't seen anyone talk about it before:

yes, i know deuce is a card soldier. everyone who's ever played twst knows this. however. many of the characters seem to take inspiration from multiple characters and multiple movies. lilia is one of maleficent's armored minions but also has elements of the three fairies, vil is the evil queen but kind of played the role of hercules in book 6, ortho has parallels to both pinocchio and baymax, the cater cinderella theory is a thing, etc.

one of yana toboso's favorite disney movies is treasure planet, so it is not at all implausible that she took inspiration from it for one of her characters.

they're both raised by single mothers. we know nothing about deuce's father iirc, and all we know of jim's father is that he left one day when jim was little and never came back.

deuce used to be a diligent kid who studied hard but became frustrated with his grades not matching the effort he put in, so he stopped trying and became a delinquent.

jim is a smart kid who used to be curious and sweet, but after his father left he changed. he became a delinquent who was failing in school and frequently got in trouble with the police.

jim goes for joyrides on aircrafts called solar surfers and is skilled at building and maintaining them.

deuce goes for joyrides on blastcycles/magical wheels and is also skilled with machinery.

deuce talks about how one day he overheard his mom on the phone with his grandmother, in tears and saying that she must've been a horrible mother because of how deuce turned out. then when he got his letter from NRC he decided he wanted to change so he wouldn't hurt his mom anymore.

in treasure planet, there's a scene where jim overhears his mother talking to dr. doppler about how she's at the end of her rope with jim's behavior and doesn't know what to do anymore because she feels like she's tried everything. then he decides he wants to make things up to her by finding treasure planet.

by the time we meet deuce, he's already cleaned his act up and decided to try and become an honor student so his mother can be proud of him. the end of treasure planet implies that jim has enrolled in the interstellar academy that captain amelia wanted to recommend him to, and in fact the canceled sequel was going to focus on jim's time there.

“So, you wanna hear a story, do ya? One about pirates and treasure?”

“I told that story already,” Marcus complains, “the one about Captain Blade and the Lost Treasure of the Sands.”

“Sure,” Skies agrees from where she’s sitting at Moxxi’s bar, in front of the Crimson Raiders. “But that’s all that was- a story. This is an Epic.”

“Centuries ago there was a pirate queen by the name of Captain Red-eye,” she regales. “Red-eye commanded dozens of ships with hundreds of men. If you had to travel between planets, you had better pray to any god out there that your ship didn’t cross paths with her fleet, or she’d strip you of everything you were worth and leave you to freeze in space.”

“Red-eye was brilliant and powerful but what made her truly legendary was her treasure. With all the plundering she did over the years, she was rich enough to make the CEOs of today’s corporations blush. And she refused to spend it, instead hoarding it in the treasure rooms spread across her fleet. My kinda gal.”

“When Red-eye felt her life beginning to wane and come to an end, she gathered all of her treasure onto her flag ship, marooned her crew on a planet, and flew off with it on her own. Red-eye, her ship and, most importantly, her treasure have been lost ever since...until today.”

“About ten minutes ago, a Dahl research group was excavating a massive asteroid when they dug up something intriguing.”

Skies holds out her ECHO communicator and it displays a holographic image. It shows a symbol in the shape of an eyeball, the iris resembling an open, fanged mouth. “This was the insignia of Captain Red-eye’s flag ship, meaning that asteroid is where Red-eye parked to die hundreds of years ago, with her long lost treasure.”

“Since the news broke, every pirate, adventurer, mercenary, bounty hunter, low-life, thrill-seeker, treasure hunter, adrenaline junky, and money grubber in the galaxy is gonna go for that treasure and kill for as much as they can carry. And of course that includes me.”

John silver (treasure planet) x Y/n

John Silver was sipping his space-grog in a dingy interstellar tavern when the message arrived. Jim Hawkins, a lad he had not seen in years, was asking for his help. Silver was taken aback. The last time he saw Jim was back when he was so obsessed with finding the allusive treasure planet that he was willing to give up anything.. Jim had softened that crooked old pirate cyborg into the person he was now. Last he'd heard Jim had graduated from the interstellar academy. full of dreams and ambition. The message mentioned a mission with captain Amelia and Delbert, a kidnapped princess, and was asking for his help. The name of the princess caught him off guard - Princess Y/n…The journey was long and arduous. Silver, along with Jim, Captain Amelia, Dr. Delbert, and their four younglings, ventured across the cosmos; there had been a group of pirate outcasts that had allegedly had been responsible for taking the princess.. Silver's mind went back to a letter he had received a long while ago. A plea for help from the woman he loved. He had once been a lowly commoner in a distant planet and he had found himself in love with a princess something that was forbidden by the king and queen but she didn't care because she loved Silver just the same. When her parents found out they banished him from the planet which had been what prompted him to become the crooked pirate he once had been, it wasn't always like that however, since he was a boy he had heard stories about treasure planet. He thought that if he found it he would be able to be with the princess, the one he loved the most.. But it didn't end up going like that however as he had found himself getting in with a nasty crooked crew and it eventually let him to become the feared cyborg that everyone had dreaded.. He couldn't go back because he thought that she would never love someone as messed up as him, a cyborg that had done terrible things.. It had been years seice he left when she sent out a plea for help. Her parents were forcing her into a marriage with a disgusting pompous prince she begged Silver to come and save her and he wanted to more than anything in this world but due to his crew's ties to the crooked king and queen he couldn't… and now he was going to rescue her from a band of kidnapping pirates.. He lamented to Jim about this but he didn't say that the princess they were currently going to save was the woman that he loved, and lost due to his own actions. But when they finally arrived at the location, they found a shocking truth. The princess had not been kidnapped. Princess Y/n had staged her own kidnapping to escape her arranged marriage. Y/n's heart filled with bitterness and resentment upon seeing silver.. Silver was her past, a past she had hoped to leave behind but couldn't. She remembered their relationship, a love that was forbidden by the kingdom. The song played in her mind, a lullaby of their lost love;

'So I sing the siren's song in hopes that one day he will come home'.. But he never did.. Even when she needed him the most. The guilt gnawed at him as he saw the resentment in Y/n's eyes... The crew agreed to help Y/n in her band of outcast pirates in their upcoming fight with the corrupt king and queen as they wouldn't give up that easily. Silver stood beside her looking out from the edge of the ship, he attempted to tell her how sorry he was he wanted to tell her everything.. Buthe didn't have the words.. "... I never stopped loving you"he said to her before she walked away.. "... What's the difference.. You weren't there.." She said.. Her words shattered his heart. As they stood against the tyranny of the king and queen, unveiling their corruption to the kingdom. Silver never stopped trying he wouldn't give up on the love that he still held for her she still held that love for him he could see it but the hurt ran deep. In the end the reign of the king and queen came to an end and the kingdom rejoiced at no longer being forced to serve under their corruption. Y/n was free at last. She couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of relief wash over her as she looked at silver once it was all said and done. He silently vowed to make amends, to be the man Y/n once loved. This time, he wouldn't let her down.

Magolor: An intrepid little alien explorer, and a far off descendent from the Ancients. Originally after the Master Crown as a journey of discovery and cultural heritage, the allure of the crown and the Dark Matter within corrupted his heart. After getting kicked around by both the Star Family and the alternate dimension purgatory, he now peacefully dwells on Popstar as a researcher and inventor, looking into the past of the Ancients and making trinkets for the citizens of Popstar. And maybe make some money on the side.

Marx: An oddball, even among Popstar, Marx was everyone's punchline, always laughed at rather than with. Until he discovered the rumors of the Clockwork Wishing Star, and plotted against the people of Popstar. After turning the Sun and Moon on each other, and stealing Kirby's wish, Nova grants him the power of an Incarnation, becoming the unofficial Incarnation of Madness. Filled with overwhelming madness and nearly losing himself, Kirby hurls him into Nova, detonating the construct. He at least kept some of the powers as well as arms. He's still quite the trickster, but at least his antics are mostly harmless.

Daroach: The world renown gentleman thief, and kingpin of the Squeak Squad, Daroach strikes fast and glamourous. After hearing rumors of a great secret treasure in Castle Dedede, he decides to set his squad out on their biggest score ever. After a straining back and forth between the squad, Dedede and Meta Knight, and Kirby, Daroach finally opens the chest out of frustration, accidentally unleashing the ruthless Dark Nebula. After experiencing the madness of Dark Matter and the horror of possession, Daroach was thoroughly humbled by Kirby. He now lays mostly low with his gang of thieves but occasionally emerges to help either Kirby or the Meta-Knights. There seems to be some history between him and Captain Vul, however.

Dark Meta Knight (Umbra Knight): Both a villain and a victim, Dark Meta Knight is what could've been, if Meta Knight fell further into Nightmare's influence. The Mirror's Incarnation of Ambition, and a slave of the nightmarish Dark Mind, Dark Meta Knight was torn down and built back up as a weapon for invasion behind the Mirror. After being kicked around by both Kirby and Shadow Kirby (now known as Shade) twice, Dark Meta Knight confronted his counterpart from Popstar, breaking down his violent, lonely life. Meta Knight sees him as a brother he couldn't protect and tries his best to get him settled in a more peaceful life, both in Popstar and the Mirror world. Dark Meta Knight, for his rebirth, chose the new name for himself, Umbra Knight.

Susie: A girl once trapped in an alternate dimension, now head of the largest robotics company this side of the galaxy, Susie is equal parts intelligent and charismatic. She doesn't stick around on Popstar very long, or visit very often. But when she's planet side, she often collaborates with Magalor in technology (and bonds over the shared trauma of being stranded in another dimension). She carries herself with a degree of maturity not often seen on Popstar, hence why she gets along mostly with Meta Knight and his crew.

Taranza: Once a prince, now a king, Taranza is the current sitting leader of the Sky People, after the defeat of the tyrant Queen Sectonia. He's often seen at Castle Dedede, trying his best to broker some peace between these two kingdoms. He also shares with Meta and Kirby any and all information he's gathered about the Mirror, in an effort to bridge the gap and heal the alternate world. He has many regrets, especially with Queen Sectonia, and he tries his best to be a good leader and diplomat, to undo at least some of the damage he's done. He's inquisitive and curious, friendly now that he's on the Star Allies' side.

Gasp as our Gallifreyan buccaneer crosses swords with the fearsome Red Jasper, scourge of the seven seas and possessor of at least one wooden leg! Thrill as Evil Evelyn the Pirate Queen sets sail in search of buried treasure, with only a foppish ship's captain and an innocent young cabin boy by her side! Marvel at the melodious mayhem which ensues as we sail the ocean blue!

And wonder why Evelyn still hasn't realised that very few stories have happy endings...

From the QNA Ask Game, I’m curious as to the inspirations behind TPKODR. I’m always wondering what inspired artists and writers to sit down and write their stories or do their art. Mine was a lot of Disney Animated classics (and Treasure Planet), but I know a lot of your AO3 fics were inspired by the Supernatural series (super awesome stories, by the way! ✨)

I wanna learn where people get their pirate inspos, and then I go read/watch them 🏴‍☠️✨

ok so I have a broad mix of things... I grew up watching pirates of the Caribbean..and it sparked my interest (I was not a fan of Peter pan the whole concept scared me as a kid and I don't particularly know why) anyway fast forward a few years and I'm researching pirates as I had a interest sparked by the pirates of the Caribbean..anyway I found Grace O'Malley a pirate queen who demanded respect from other sovereignty and my curiosity grew. A few years back I learned about Anne Bonny then I found this music track that got me hooked on the tale (one day I might do a retelling of the legend of Anne Bonny but that'll be a while off yet)

Then I have played assassin's Creed and Skyrim has some pirates down at the docks as well.

I also have several pirate captains or pirate king's who have caught my attention over the years but I'm trying not to ramble on too much lol...also I loved the lore of Davy Jones as a kid ...

For the fae aspect it would be nature spirit lore and druidic belief based I suppose, I have always had an interest in the fae.

I added a lot of little tidbits to be included to the story of most if my favorite subjects.. although I do have to remember not to get carried away more often than not lol....

One day her best friend, Carlotta, suggested they should both attend Enchanted Rose to be closer to Royal Sword and Night Raven to meet rich hot guys. At first, Alyssa dismissed the mere prospect, especially if it was such shallow reasoning behind it. But after her mom urged her to go, she decided to take Carlotta up on it, wanting to have a bit of an adventure and to bond more with her cousin, Sam, who she hadn't seen in years.

Alyssa now attends Enchanted Rose while working part time at the Mostro Lounge, visiting her cousin at his shop and swimming in her little spare time. She often works herself to the bone, taking on more than what she can chew. But she thinks it's all worth it in the end, so she can earn enough money to open up her own restaurant and help out others in her community.

She is also close friends with Makoa, her adoptive brother, along with Jade, Floyd and Reille.

She is princess of Prydain, one of "rose leaves" next to Rose Queendom, and heir to the throne. She takes her duties seriously, wanting to learn how to become a good future queen, sharpen her magical skills and fiercely protective over those she loves. Her stubborn, brash and hardheaded nature sometimes gets in the way of this goal. She is also quite sporty, enjoying to do magift, archery and fencing in her spare time, which are things she bonds over with Maisie and Leona over.

However, she's also incredibly moody, secretive and insecure. Despite being Vil's ex, she is still on good terms with him and are still friends.

However, she's also rather sheltered and naive, reckless, stubborn, proud and has a hard time seeing other's perspectives.

A spoiled rich girl from Port of Jubilee and life long friend to Alyssa. She wanted her and Alyssa to attend Enchanted Rose in order to get rich hot boyfriends from RSA and NRC. After some convincing, Alyssa comes along for the ride. While can be ditzy, careless and selfish, she cares a lot about Alyssa and will do anything to help her out.

(As a side note, I wanted to make her a tanned-skinned blonde girl, but I couldn't find a model like that, so I went with that. Just imagine her as a blonde.)

Sana Al Siaf

Sana is Aziza's retainer and trusted friend. She's a descendant of the same cursed Genie who was set free by Sultana Yasamina and Sultan Jafar. Despite this, she's fairly down to earth, gives good advice and is able to help a friend in need. That doesn't stop her from rubbing people the wrong way sometimes due her mischievous and tricky nature and her tendency to get herself into trouble.

Noémie Boumount

Noémie is a noble cat beastwoman from the Land of Pyroxene. She lives with her mother, stepfather and two brothers. Noémie is very girly, often opting for pink and bows wherever possible, and a huge romantic. Her upper class upbringing made her know proper etiquette. She even wants to get into theatre and has plenty of piano training to boot. She likes to believe she is as regal as her mother, however, she more often than not acts in a way that is rather unladylike. She never starts anything, but she most certainly has no problems joining in the trouble once it begins. She also has a tendency to stick her nose into other people's business and is a huge gossip, especially if there's romance involved.

About: Sora with her friends, Kai, Ryu, kwazzi and peso accidentally hit into a dimension without her using her fantasy heart key. The fantasy heart group ended up in a world of pirates and crew members on a mission to get gold. But then queen Lucifer and prince Hamada went to their world to destroy them! With the help of their new friends, they can beat the queen and the prince and the heartless monsters together.

Kwazzi: rob rackstraw (a pirate troublemaker who always gets himself and the team caught easily. She gave silver a snack but he food poisoned him accidentally)

Peso: Wayne Grayson ( a penguin doctor who takes care of injured people especially his team. He is also a caretaker especially to silver and his upset stomach)

Ryu: Joe mele (the oldest in the group; he the opposite of kwazzi. He acts like a leader and somehow gets jealous of Sora)

Kai: Ariel winter (she the second youngest in the group; she loved Ryu and Sora as her siblings. She can be a little off with kwazzi after what he has done to silver)

Jim Hawkins: Joesph Gordon Levitt (the leader of the mothership; he also supports for silver to make him feel better. He’s the leader of the ship)

John silver: Brian Murray (a cook and a cyborg who accidentally got his stomach upset thanks to kwazzi)

Delbert Doppler: David Hyde pierce (a doctor who’s friends with peso and also cares and worries about silver)

Captain Amelia: Emma Thompson ( she’s the captain of the team. She also wants to support him for making him feel better)

B.E.N: Martin short (a robot who’s friends with Jim Hawkins and Sora on their mission)

T’pring is the soon to be queen of New Vulcan. Her people have been scattered and displaced, and it’s only thanks to the gods that the princess and her ill mother survived the fall of Vulcan. Her mother is sick, and the remaining nobility on Vulcan are either to old or to young to be an eligible partner. At her mother’s request (an order, actually) T’pring is set to be engaged to the newly elected ruler of Terra. A woman whose intelligence is feared, and who many have sought after for her hand in marriage. 

Spock is the personal body for Princess T’pring. He’s quick, silent, and dangerous. But he’s also her only friend. He’s the shadow she never sees, and as her personal guard it is his duty to lay down his life for her if necessary. Spock has already lost everything, so what’s his life compared to the death of his mother and his planet? 

Uhura is the newly elected ruler of Terra after a long and tiring four year campaign. She’s surrounded by her enemies, and feels increasingly isolated as the stress of her job beings to mount. It’s a position she’s never wanted, but she refuses to back down from it. She (or her advisors) have arranged for her to marry the displaced future queen of New Vulcan. She leaves in a few weeks, and only hopes her bodyguard won’t embarrass her. 

Kirk is an Section 31 member (or so he says) who does everything in his power to make sure Uhura doesn’t get killed. Or hurt. Both. No one really knows much about his backstory other than the fact that his father used to be a captain of Terra’s most treasured starship before he died. He’s more like a little brother than a bodyguard, but in a sea full of enemies Kirk is the only person she trusts.

there are a few that i'm not 100% about, so this is a very rough cast list!

Jim Hawkins: Jubilee and Hestia (Jubilee has Jim's more impulsive and short personality, while Hestia is more like Jim's quiet and sullen side)

John Silver: Tugger (because you all know that I'm an absolute sucker for Tugger accidentally adopting kids)

Delbert Doppler: Skimbleshanks (just... it's a no-brainer, they're basically the same person)

Captain Amelia: Jennyanydots (Amelia is 100% what Jenny was like as a younger queen)

Star Wars WLW Week | Day 4

Day 4 Prompt: Courtship Rituals

Otherwise known as "How To Court An Alderaanian"

Amilyn Holdo gets a lesson in Alderaanian courtship traditions. (~2200 words)

Amilyn is enjoying Aldera’s open-air market with the rest of her Pathfinding class. Leia’s mother, Queen Breha, had suggested they all do a little shopping before eating dinner in the palace that evening, and Amilyn is taking full advantage. She’s already purchased a new fuchsia scarf to wear at said dinner. But mostly it’s nice to wander through the stalls without a mission in mind. Alderaan is a beautiful planet, and its people seem to enjoy creating beautiful things. Amilyn truly loves beautiful things.

She runs into Kier Domadi at a stall featuring a long table crowded with carvings that look to be made out of real wood.

“Kier, what are these?” she asks the native Alderaanian.

He glances between Amilyn and the table. “You’ve never heard of lovespoons? They’re a treasured Alderaanian tradition.”

“These are spoons?”

Amilyn picks up one of the intricately carved wooden objects. There is a shallow depression at one end that could be spoon-like, but because most of the object is a long series of interlocking symbols that have nothing to do with silverware, Amilyn doubt it’s ever being used at a dinner table.

Kier smiles gently at her. He’s a nice boy, but usually a little too academic-minded for Amilyn’s liking. It does make him the right person to ask questions of at least.

“Most people hang theirs as decoration,” Kier explains in his future historian’s voice. “Traditionally, demonstrating both your skill in woodcarving and the dedication of time it takes to make such an object were necessary elements in Alderaanian courtship.”

Amilyn raises her eyebrows at him. “And what about these days? Does anyone still gift these?” There’s an interesting idea taking shape in the back of her mind.

Kier tips his head to one side. “There are dedicated artisans who make them now,” he says, gesturing to the owner of the stall. “And some people continue to purchase them to give to their beloved. Most married couples on Alderaan have at least one lovespoon hanging on their wall. In fact, I can show you a rather famous example in the palace later. The queen keeps the lovespoon the viceroy gave her when they were courting displayed in their throne room.”

Amilyn turns the lovespoon over in her hands, examining the way the polished wood flows from one symbol to the next without a hint of joinery. It would probably take a long time to learn the skill to make something like this.

“Thanks, Kier,” she says, setting the spoon back down on the table. She’s not interested in buying one, but knowing that Leia’s parents have one displayed in a prominent place is making her interesting idea a lot more compelling.

Amilyn is right. It takes a long time before she’s skilled enough to carve a lovespoon of her own.

She immediately finds a teacher back on Gatalenta to teach her the basics, and she takes to making practice pieces with every spare moment she can find. The problem is, she doesn’t have many spare moments. At first, Pathfinding and the Apprentice Legislature take up most of her attention. That’s not the worst because at least she gets to be with Leia while she’s doing those things. They grow ever closer as friends, and Amilyn tries not to pay attention to the way Leia looks at Kier whenever they’re all together.

But then Leia tells Amilyn all about the rebellion now forming against the Empire. And the pair find themselves on a mission to the Paucris System. They manage to warn the rebels gathered there of the Empire’s interest in their location just in time for them to evacuate. But neither of them can save Kier Domadi, that noble fool, who’d come to rescue Leia and ended up caught in the rebel station’s self-destruction wave. Amilyn is sad to lose a friend, and sadder still for Leia who is obviously devastated by Kier’s death. So Amilyn is the one who pilots them all back to Alderaan and keeps the Empire from figuring out just how entangled they are with the rebel cause.

Amilyn is also the one Leia leans on while she’s grieving. So she sets her carving aside to focus on teaching Leia skyfaring and eventually letting her know that it’s okay to smile and laugh again. By the time Leia is formally invested as Alderaan’s crown princess, she and Amilyn are spending nearly all of their free time together.

Once Leia teaches Amilyn how to drive a speeder on Coruscant, all bets on either of them actually being in their city apartments at night are off. They explore as much of Coruscant as they can while the Apprentice Legislature is in session. And Amilyn keeps trying to indicate her more-than-friendship feelings to Leia, but she’s more than a little scared of losing Leia’s actual friendship if those feelings aren’t returned.

And then, one night the two of them make a ridiculous bet. And in the chaotic aftermath of its execution, Leia asks Amilyn to kiss her.

So Amilyn starts carving again. She’s just starting to get competent enough to plan the actual design for a real lovespoon when things with the rebellion get serious. Leia moves on from the Apprentice Legislature so she can take over as Imperial Senator for her father. Amilyn can’t do the same for Gatalenta, but Leia helps her become a civil minister in the Alliance Civil Government. It’s important work obviously, helping to bring the Galactic Republic back from the ashes the Empire scattered across the galaxy. But it means she and Leia hardly have time for each other anymore as their duties pull them to separate star systems more and more.

Amilyn’s heart breaks when she hears about the destruction of Alderaan. She races to be by Leia’s side on Yavin 4, but their reunion is temporary. Leia makes it a mission to save the Alderaanians who were off-world when their home planet was destroyed, and Alliance High Command assigns Amilyn back to her ministerial duties. After a clever idea she had when the ship she was on is caught in a Star Destroyer’s tractor beam, Amilyn is promoted to captain in the Alliance Fleet and her life changes yet again.

She tries to keep tabs on Leia, but the princess of Alderaan is often deep undercover, or otherwise involved with Alliance High Command. They manage to send each other messages on occasion, but Amilyn feels Leia growing distant in more ways than one. She’s seen the smuggler at Leia’s side with the blaster at his hip and a glint in his eyes. Han Solo is the opposite of Kier Domadi in almost every way, but Amilyn feels the same desire not to pay attention when she sees Leia looking at him.

Eventually, Amilyn puts her carving tools away for good. She spends the ensuing decades focused on helping the Alliance and then the New Republic once the Empire has truly fallen. She watches from a respectful distance as Leia marries her smuggler and then has a son with him. But Leia still invites her over and introduces her to little Ben as “Aunt Amilyn.” Their friendship never quite recovers to what it was when they were girls together, but Amilyn isn’t surprised. For her part, she knows that she’ll always be in love with Leia. That alone puts a certain distance between them that can probably never be breached. But Amilyn is glad to have Leia back in her life in whatever capacity she can.

And when a new power in the form of the First Order rises and Leia asks for Amilyn’s help once again, Amilyn is only too ready to join General Organa’s Resistance. She’s put in charge of the Resistance Fleet as a Vice Admiral and she takes to her new command with pleasure.

But Amilyn notices a difference in Leia. And eventually she gets the truth out of her old friend. Her son, Ben, has fallen to the dark side of the Force. And Han is gone; their marriage dissolved in all but name.

Amilyn feels terrible when she pulls out the box with the half-carved lovespoon inside it, the dim hope that has remained in her heart after all of these years trying to flare back to life within her. She looks at the rough shape for a long time. Her fingers ache for the handles of her carving tools, and she can almost smell the peels of exposed wood as they curl back and then drop to the floor.

She shakes her head and puts the box away again.

“Amilyn, what is this?”

Amilyn turns from the pot of Gatalentan tea she’s brewing to see Leia holding up her failed attempt at a lovespoon.

“Ah… That.” Amilyn brings the pot over to the small table in her ready room and pours a glass of tea for Leia and herself. “I didn’t realize generals had permission to snoop through vice admiral’s belongings.” She says it lightly so Leia will know she’s teasing, but Leia still blushes.

“The box was unlatched, and I was curious,” she admits. She settles herself in a chair and reaches for her glass. She inhales the steam with a smile. “I do love this tea.”

Amilyn smiles back at her. “You always did,” she says. She takes a sip of her own tea before running a fingertip over her unfinished carving. “I’ve carried this all over the galaxy with me, you know, but I never have gotten the chance to finish it.”

“You made this?” Leia looks at it again with something like awe in her dark eyes.

Amilyn hums. “I did. And even though it’s not finished, maybe you can guess what it’s supposed to be?”

Leia sets her glass down and picks up the carving. She turns it over and over in her hands. Amilyn tries not to thrill at the way Leia’s fingers glide lovingly over the turns in the wood as though it’s a living thing she has to be gentle with. Finally, Leia holds it out in front of her, taking it in at one glance. She tilts her head.

“I’m not sure,” she admits.

Amilyn steeples her fingers beneath her chin. “The first time I saw one, I didn’t know what it was either,” she says. “I had to get Kier Domadi to explain it to me.”

Leia sucks in a startled breath. Amilyn winces. She shouldn’t have dropped Kier’s name like that without warning. Even decades later, his absence is a grief to them both.

But a moment later, Leia is staring wide-eyed at Amilyn, clutching the carving close to her chest.

“Amilyn,” she says as though she can’t believe the words that are coming out of her mouth. “Is this an Alderaanian lovespoon?”

Amilyn shrugs and gives the princess half a smile. “It was supposed to be. Once upon a time. Like I said, I never have gotten the chance to finish it.”

Leia touches the carving again, and Amilyn sees the moment she starts to understand the symbols Amilyn has been trying to bring out of the wood. The shapes are rudimentary, but identifiable: starships and speeders, a crown and a sword for Leia, twists like skyfaring silks and flames for Amilyn, and at the end where it all comes together is a shallow spoon-like curve in the shape of a heart.

“When did you start this…?” Leia breathes, not quite looking at Amilyn.

Amilyn’s heart is beating faster, and she tries to will it to slow down. She shrugs again, and takes another sip of her tea. “Right after Kier told me about the tradition,” she says. “I knew it would take some time to learn how to carve, so I spent a long time practicing before I started that piece. And of course I never had enough time to work on this one, so I couldn’t ever finish it. And if I couldn’t finish it, I couldn’t tell you…”

“Oh, Amilyn.” And Leia is staring at her now with unshed tears shining in her eyes.

Amilyn’s breath catches in her throat. Leia lays the carving down on the table between them and reaches for Amilyn’s hands. Their fingers intertwine easily, Amilyn’s slender and trembling where Leia’s are sure and strong.

“My dear,” Leia whispers, caressing the backs of Amilyn’s hands with her thumbs. “I’m not sure I deserve your love.”

“And yet you’ve always had it,” Amilyn whispers back. She can feel her own tears gathering in her eyes and she blinks them away furiously. “I have loved you all these long years, Leia, and I will continue to love you until the day that I die.”

“May the Force grant that day is long from now,” Leia says with a tremulous smile. “Amilyn, my dear, dear friend.” And she lifts Amilyn’s hands in hers so that she can kiss the tips of her fingers with soft lips. “Be patient with me if you still can. Stars know I love you too, but my heart has been so bruised…”

“I know,” Amilyn murmurs. “I know it has.”

Leia releases one of her hands to touch the lovespoon again. “May I have this in the spirit with which it was originally intended?” she asks a little shyly.

Amilyn blinks back more tears. “Are you saying you’d like me to court you, Your Highness?”

Leia dips her head and smiles. Her fingers tighten around Amilyn’s as she nods. “Yes.”

And Amilyn thinks she can fly forever on that word alone.

Synopsis

Hurrah! The deadly Daleks are back! Yes, those lovable tinpot tyrants have another plan to invade our world. Maybe this time because they want to drill to the Earth's core. Or maybe because they just feel like it.

And when those pesky pepperpots are in town, there is one thing you can be sure of. There will be non-stop high octane mayhem in store. And plenty of exterminations!

But never fear. The Doctor is on hand to sort them out. Defender of the Earth, saviour of us all. With his beautiful assistant, Evelyn Smythe, by his side, he will fight once again to uphold the beliefs of the English Empire. All hail the glorious English Empire!

Now that sounds like a jubilee worth celebrating, does it not?

Synopsis

On a dark frozen planet where no planet should be, in a doomed city with a sky of stone, the last denizens of Earth's long-lost twin will pay any price to survive, even if the laser scalpels cost them their love and hate and humanity.

And in the Mat-infested streets, round about tea-time, the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa unearth a black market in secondhand body parts and run the gauntlet of augmented police and their augmented horses.

And just between the tram stop and the picture house, the Doctor's worst suspicions are finally confirmed: the Cybermen have only just begun, and the Doctor will be, just as he always has been, their saviour...

Synopsis

All aboard, me hearties, for a rip-roaring tale of adventure on the high seas!

There'll be rum for all and sea shanties galore as we travel back in time to join the valiant crew of the good ship Sea Eagle, braving perils, pirates and a peripatetic old sea-dog known only as the Doctor!

Gasp as our Gallifreyan buccaneer crosses swords with the fearsome Red Jasper, scourge of the seven seas and possessor of at least one wooden leg! Thrill as Evil Evelyn the Pirate Queen sets sail in search of buried treasure, with only a foppish ship's captain and an innocent young cabin boy by her side! Marvel at the melodious mayhem which ensues as we sail the ocean blue!

And wonder why Evelyn still hasn't realised that very few stories have happy endings...
