hey, listen! this is a rant post about neurodivergent characters in Genshin and my frustration with the fandom's reading comprehension skills. if you're in a bad place or just don't like angry rants, please don't force yourself and go read something else instead. <3

Okay, so, I watched this video recently, and let's just say, I have some thoughts.

This isn't just a Xiao problem- the entire fandom is terrible at characterization. The example that makes me the most angry is the mischaracterization of neurodivergent characters.

Take Alhaitham for example. He's often seen as rude and narcissistic by the fandom- which is especially apparent in Haikaveh content, where people portray him as straight up abusive.

You wanna know why this makes me so mad? The supposedly narcissistic and rude traits Alhaitham has are actually just exaggerated symptoms of autism.

Like, come ON, people. Don't skip dialogue. Better yet, go read through his story quest again. He straight up tells someone who sees him as narcissistic that he doesn't see others as less than himself. Also, his voicelines basically confirm this- he's extremely socially inept and he doesn't care. He has difficulty showing emotions as readily as his peers- that doesn't mean he doesn't have them, just that he expresses them differently. He comes across as rude because he doesn't get that people don't like to hear what they're doing wrong, and he probably doesn't care because that's not his problem. If people don't like how blunt he is, that's their problem. At least, that's how I think he views the world.

And like, there are SO many hints that he's autistic. He wears sound-blocking earpieces, for crying out loud. Hell, the ENTIRE REASON why he helped out during the Archon quest was because he didn't want his life to change too much. Preferring routine is an autistic trait.

And the worst part is, when I talk about this outside of neurodivergent groups, people tell me I'm wrong and that he couldn't be autistic DESPITE THOSE PEOPLE NOT BEING AUTISTIC THEMSELVES.

And I'm not saying that every autistic person relates to Alhaitham, but I certainly do. And I'm actually quite friendly because I'm anxious about being rejected. Alhaitham isn't, and I'm so jealous of him for that. He's living his best life.

Finally, back to the Haikaveh thing... Alhaitham isn't abusive. He doesn't say horrible things to Kaveh, and the one example of him doing that I could find, he immediately backtracked and subtly tried to make Kaveh feel better. Hell, Alhaitham doesn't even actually care about making sure Kaveh pays rent. He says it as a joke, but because he's autistic and his tone of voice doesn't give that away as well, he's portrayed as abusive and misunderstood as narcissistic. Y'all just don't like neurodivergent people and it shows.

Yes, neurodivergent includes Xiao. PTSD is often viewed as a form of neurodivergency, and there are many MANY characters in Genshin that have PTSD or some other form of neurodivergence. Yet people refuse to see them as such and mischaracterize them as "edgy," "narcissistic," "unapproachable," "weird," and the like. Yet none of these characters are any of those things.

You wanna know the true narcissists? The true edgelords? The actually rude people? Might I direct your attention to Scaramouche, Childe, and Dottore, whom everyone makes out to be as misunderstood pathetic little meow meows that need love.

Reminder that only two of those three are actually redeemable, and one is STILL an edgelord who is more rude than Alhaitham could ever be, while the other is a certified insane person with a weird set of morals.

(Side note: I love Scaramouche and Childe as characters. I'm just tired of people acting like they aren't worse than the autistic characters. Scaramouche is extremely rude, but he's trying to be better as Wanderer thanks to Nahida's help. He has severe PTSD, and Childe does, too. But both of them are actually messed up and have done horrible things, yet people portray them as better and more in need of love than the characters with unlikable (read: neurodivergent) traits.)

Don't even get me started on how people portray Kokomi, Sucrose, Fischl, Diluc, Zhongli, Cyno, Furina, Neuvillette, and Albedo. Especially that last one- I WILL get mad if one more person tries to tell me he's just emotionless and rude.

Also, if anyone is wondering where I've seen people misunderstanding these characters, it's mostly on Hoyolab site discussions. There's one too many posts talking about how "rude" and "annoying" these characters are.

With Alhaitham especially, I see many people writing him as abusive in Haikaveh content. I see people arguing about the ship being toxic because Alhaitham is "abusive," "unfeeling," and "cruel." Even people who like the ship portray him as such. And I've seen too many people comparing him to Dr. Ratio, who is literally just a narcissist who views others as beneath him. Don't get me wrong, I understand the comparison. It's just... very obvious that people skipped dialogue during Genshin's Archon and story quests.

And it's frustrating because I've been misunderstood in the exact same way. I've been called "rude," "annoying," and "unfeeling" in the past and it's screwed me up. Seeing people do the same thing to a character I so deeply relate to makes me lose confidence in both myself and people around me.

If that's how you view a fictional character with autistic traits, how do you treat real people with the same traits?

Hi! Nice to hear from you again, and I'm glad you liked it. Now, this is a very interesting and very complicated question you've offered me. I like it. I'm gonna put it under the cut, because this... is going to take a while.

From what we've seen in the epilogues, in RWBY Beyond, Oscar is losing more and more of himself. Ozpin's losing himself too. They're losing themselves and each other to the merge and who'll they'll become together. It's stopping being Ozpin's experiences, Ozpin being the subject of fairytales, and starting to be Oscar referring to those past events as his.

If you think about it, the curse, the merge, is kind of like a really twisted, fucked up version of Ascension, where the choice of purpose is completely taken away instead. Ozma was given a task, a role, a purpose, a part to play in the story of the battle between light and dark, and that purpose has been passed on, whether anyone likes it or not. The answer, most often, is not.

In V8, we see Oscar frustrated with Ozpin's return, because he was starting to carve out his own role, figuring out who he wanted to be. That choice is being taken away from him, just like it was taken away from the person Ozpin used to be, taken away from the King of Vale, again and again thousands of years past.

I think a meeting between Oscar, Ozpin, and The Blacksmith would be very, very interesting, particularly in her relationship with the Brothers.

The Blacksmith created them. She said "The Brothers built homes for [the Everafterans], and gave them roles to play". Would she see nothing wrong with the way the Brothers acted, the role they assigned to Ozma and his line? The Blacksmith doesn't seem to be able to know what happens in Remnant, only catching glimpses of it in the humans who fall into the Ever After. The Blacksmith seems to like what she sees, calling humans "Remarkable things [the Brothers] accomplished". What would she think about Oscar and Ozpin?

She seems to value souls, they move through her domain afterall, and she seemed to like it when Ruby asked after "The souls that are moving on to whatever they become next". But the line of Ozma doesn't get to move on when they die. Their souls merge with others, they are subsumed, they are an amalgamation, they are something that has never been before, they are not something they want to be. Would the Blacksmith be mad at the Brothers for what has been done to dozens of hundreds of innocent souls? She doesn't seem capable of condemnation, that is not her purpose, but would empathy be shown for the line of Ozma, including ones past?

The Blacksmith does feel emotions, she's not a robot, she's glad to see Jaune, she finds joy in creating, the "not knowing". Would she find Oscar and Oz a fascinating creation? Or would she be dismayed at how little there is to know, how little choice there is. Everafterans die, and choose what to become next through Ascension. Oz dies, doesn't choose where he goes, doesn't choose where they become, doesn't choose a purpose that can we even really say is his anymore? When they've become so many people, does Ozma's original choice really belong to them anymore?

As always with the line of Ozma, it is a question of choice, identity, and free will.

How The Blacksmith would feel about it, act about it, think about it, is a very interesting question. But there is the question of if she can do anything about it.

Yes, The Tree/Blacksmith made the Brothers, and the Brothers made humans, and the Blacksmith obviously has influence over the humans who do end up in her domain. Would that be enough to supercede the curse? The will of the Brother of Light? The purpose he gave Ozma and every single soul who came after? It'd be interesting if The Blacksmith couldn't. If the Brother's intercession would be necessary to fix what they broke, what they started. But that's not the question here!

Enough hypotheticals, it's time to get down to it. In this scenario, we'll go with Oscar and Oz being over halfway merged, probably a lot merged by this point, but still two distinct entities in their own right. The Blacksmith, whatever her feelings about it, can help, allowing Oscar and Oz to choose their purpose and who they'll become.

I've seen in the fandom a lot that a turning point for Oscar would be/will be when he gets his own weapon. Weapons are so important in RWBY, Oscar being able to choose what weapon he gets, the name, the meaning behind it rather than one he inherits is so important. That carries over easily to the Blacksmith and the choices/weapons she presents.

Choosing to be yourself is a legitimate option when it comes to The Blacksmith! Oscar would definitely choose to be himself, that's without question, even if he's not sure who that himself is, he's willing to make it. I think that would best go down if instead of choosing one of the weapons The Blacksmith presents or choosing Long Memory, Oscar makes his own. I personally think it would be very cool if The Blacksmith let Oscar use her forge to make his own weapon, make his own self, make who he chooses to be.

I think that extra effort to physically make his own weapon would also be important. There's a lot more weight there, the weight of a purpose assigned, the weight of so, so many souls behind him, clinging to him. I think in that moment, Oscar would be straining to go forward and, like all parents, Ozpin would have to make the choice to let go. Let Oscar move forward into the unknown instead of the path laid before them, let go even though it's hard, even though it's scary, because letting children choose their own paths and who they are is very, very important.

Oscar being able to literally forge his own identity, his own path, would be both symbolically appropriate and also very cool.

Now, we also have to consider what would happen to Oz. Both Ozpin and the entire line before him, whatever small, pedantic difference there may be. I think it's too late to let the previous souls go. They're merged, and there's no separating them. They're gone. They're here but they're gone. There's only Ozpin left. But what that would mean, well, that's up to Ozpin. He'd have to make his own choice on who he is, who he becomes, what his purpose is.

I... don't think he'd choose to be himself. I think he'd be so, so tired of the purpose he was assigned. I think he'd like to make his own decision, and I think he'd choose to be someone else. Let the line of Ozma end, expire, be no more. He would choose to be someone else. The Blacksmith said, "Choose for yourself one who can leave your burdens behind or choose one who would be enough to bear them". This is what she said to Ruby, so it's not entirely applicable, but the sentiment is there.

I think Ozpin would choose to be someone else. Someone who isn't so embittered by betrayl that they can still trust. Someone who can see the best in people, who can continue to reach out. Someone who doesn't give up, doesn't run away. Oscar showed him someone better to be, tried to push him to be that person. And now he can take that final step, and become someone else with a far better purpose than had been handed down to him by the Brothers.

He can become someone kind.

That is who he wants to be. Kind enough to reach out, kind enough to trust, kind enough to stay even when he's afraid, kind enough to reach out like Oscar did to Emerald, kind enough to fix a broken heart like in Hazel and perhaps... even like in Salem.

Oscar and Ozpin would return to Vacuo together, Oscar the most himself he's ever been, and Ozpin happy to be someone else entirely, but no matter what, they'd stick together.

I think that would be a good way for it to go.

I'm going to start this answer with a disclaimer that this is speculation and I have no way of knowing how Oliver and Ryan actually feel about buddie actually going canon.

Okay, so here's the thing, Oliver and Ryan they know what buddie could do to their career, it is very obvious that they are fully aware of what being the one m/m couple who actually became a couple could do for them. And we know that it was supposed to be Eddie and that it was switched to Buck mid production so I think they were under the impression that both of them were going to come out at some point in s7. I think that the way that they played 701 is very "we are both getting out" yk? It feels very "it's going to happen this time". They probably don't want to gamble the possibility of not delivering that if it keeps getting delayed because it would be great for them. The bisexual arc did a lot for Oliver and being the one m/m couple that drove the internet crazy that actually got together would give them even more, and honestly they seem to know that it makes sense within the story to get Buck and Eddie together. And the 100th episode party they were closer than usual and there were the jokes that they were sleeping together or that buddie had made out at some point because they looked a lot more comfortable in each other's space then before, like the way that Ryan opened a button on Oliver's shirt and the way he didn't even flinch is a good example, and honestly, two actors who play two characters who might been on the verge of making the switch from platonic to romantic would work on their reactions to each other and they seem to be good enough friends to be fine with doing this type of preparation, I'm not even thinking anything much, just the concept of not reacting to being closer than usual. And sure, they were filming the bachelor party during that so maybe there was just something transferring from the scene that they were filming, but this is 6 years in the making, Buck's bi, and they wanted to get Eddie out first. There is no way that they weren't like "huh they're going to get us together" that assuming that they that the show didn't straight up tell them "we're pulling the trigger, it's happening this season" then changed the plans after the reaction to Tommy, because we know that they rewrote and rearrange everything from 707 to 710, so there is a chance that both of them were told that they were going to be out by the end of the season which would lead to buddie, like there is no way to get both of them out and not get buddie together, and I think that what happened is that the good reaction to Buck being bisexual made them realize that if they made Eddie queer in the same season, they would be losing a lot in promotion because they could use Ryan and the confirmation of buddie to just have a huge promotion run for s8 the same way that Buck's bisexuality made the promotion for s7.

And I think that's why Oliver looked as frustrated that he did by the end of the season because he kind of got pushed to the background because they didn't know what to do exactly with Buck especially, with the way that the bisexuality became a ship war, it took away from about his identity, but now they're back at the state that they were in the beginning of season 7 and they have a whole season to play. But the thing is, all the problems that happened that have been happening, they make it so it is really hard to gamble in bringing another love interest in (specially because even Oliver in getting heat), I mean, we are in the 8th combined love interest, it's enough, it's been long enough, and everyone involved has to know that. And we know that fox was the one that was blocking buddie in the past, because blocking Buck bi means blocking buddie, and now they are not being blocked by a network, they have the support. So they are probably like "okay are we going to do it, we need to do this". Because it would be great for their career and they seem to actually enjoy the idea of going there, yk? I like when magic in fiction is done intentionally, when there's reason behind it. Hard magic systems are just so much more satisfying. I like fiction like "The Name of the Wind" where magic is treated like a scientific study, so that tends to follow me in most of my magical pursuits/stories.

I have many many thoughts on magic in fiction haha.

Grimoires are just collections of information! If you ever have a desire to study witchcraft or even just look into it, I highly recommend treating it like a science, it makes things a little easier to learn/understand.

"Hi-Fi RUSH did everything No Straight Roads was trying to do but better." In terms of gameplay and polish? Definitely. But personally, NSR's art, characters, and music made much bigger impressions on me than HFR. I cannot remember a single standout original track from HFR that isn't a cover (not saying it doesn't have any bangers; the music is good— but all the rock tracks kinda blend together after a while), while NSR's music stands out immediately. Mayday and Zuke are also way more entertaining MCs than Chai. Fight me.

(For the record, I love both games. I'm just annoyed at HFR fans putting NSR down to make their game look better when it also has flaws.)
