My Adventures with Superman EP 4: Design Works

My goodness it feels so strange to see these designs two years later but I actually had a hand in Clark, Lois and Jimmy’s gala suits in episode 4 of My Adventures with Superman!

This happened WAY back in Sept 2021 but during my first week on the show I jokingly sent a piece of art to one of the design leads and well, one thing led to another:

This is kind of running gag with my work, but I somehow always predict things when I draw fanart haha. I truly didn’t know there was gonna be a gala episode and now I was tasked to do a pass for the main trio’s gala outfits.

CLARK KENT

Naturally since it started with Clark, he was the first one I did a pass on. I actually really like men’s suits design so this was the most fun to design out of the three. Overall, I drafted up four different suits that gave 4 different feels for our soft boi. Option A was a full 3 piece with slick backed hair (which honestly now feels very Bruce Wayne than Clark haha). Option B had a high school prom feel, Option C was more business casual (hence why his dress shirt was unbuttoned at top) and finally Option D was sleek turtleneck & suit combo. Honestly, I was rooting Option D ‘cause I’m a sucker for a turtleneck but if I  remember correct they went with Option B ‘cause it felt the most Clark. But just know I tried haha.

LOIS LANE

Lois’s outfit was quite challenging since I had no clue until I was given the assignment that she’s Korean (yes, Lois is canonically Korean in the show). I remember the design leads Jane Bak and Dou Hong showing me a rough concept of a modern hanbok. I spent so many days researching hanboks and the construction behind them...it truly was a learning experience for me haha. It was quite challenging trying to create and outfit that spoke to Lois’ heritage while still keeping her energy. This was my very first pass but I think ultimately the team did a great job to hone in the final look and balance both elements for her outfit (the backless top is just chef’s kiss). Also yes, I did try giving Lois slick back hair haha.

JIMMY OLSEN

There isn’t much to say about Jimmy’s outfit (sadly I left the production to work on Spiderman Freshman Year before seeing what they decided on). But from what I remember, I specifically was looking at men’s outfits from the Met Gala from that year and before (I think Chadwick Boseman was the biggest influence for me at the time). Though I think his final suit design aren’t like too far off from my initial thoughts, it’s still super cool to see how it evolved into the final look!  But yeah! Just a little behind the scenes on the work I got to do on the show. Again, super brief since Spidey was calling my name but I truly had so much fun getting to design for this show. MAWS was my first ever time doing design work (since I primarily work as a 2D animator and board artist). I was so nervous but the team was welcoming and taught me so much! I really have to thank Dou Hong and Jake Wyatt for taking a chance on me and allowing me to draw hot anime characters for a DC show haha.

holy HELL man. to give my spoiler free thoughts: it was loads of fun. the concert footage was absolutely gorgeous. the sound quality was insane, I sang along through all the songs. ending left me shook and have more questions than answers.

OVERALL: a damn good concert movie. so thrilling. so much fun. I am happy that I got to experience this. despite the absence of our previous papas, we cling onto so dearly, I know the spotlight isn't shining on them anymore. it makes me sad, as I would've love to see Terzo in some narrative type media. Now, I await for what this new Era will bring.

So, I decided to take a few photos of the Danganronpa 4コマ KINGS series and compile a few of the findings I thought were funny.

I don't have everything fully translated yet, so there may be a few issues with my findings. If you find any mistakes or have anything to add, please lmk :) I'll also update this if I find things later.

Hifumi has written, drawn, or thought of making content relating to Sayaka x Kiyoko, Aoi x Sakura (on two occasions), and Makoto x Byakuya

Toko thinks that… something… happened between Mondo and Kiyotaka in the sauna, wink wink.

Toko wrote some sort of fanfiction in relation to Byakuya, Chihiro and Mondo. Idk what it is, but the title is along the lines of "The Byakuya Family Household Sweep Away a Beautiful Girl". (Pretty sure it's a Mondo x Chihiro fic, but I could be wrong.)

Aoi's b00bs are so squishy, she can use them to launch herself off things.

Everyone really likes drawing pretty boy Byakuya. Like, he looks fabulous in some of these panels. Here is one of those pictures:

Yasuhiro's secret (the motive in Chapter 2) is that he's an idiot.

Mondo, Kiyotaka and Sayaka all get along really well! So do Mondo, Kiyotaka and Chihiro :)

(I'm pretty sure that) Kiyotaka was found guilty in a trial relating to black underwear. Unclear if he was executed or not. (This point is subject to change once I fully translate the comic.)

Kiyotaka was brainwashed by the Mono-Rangers (parody on Power Rangers) in a different comic. He became Commander Ishimaru and enforced rules and dress code in a dictator-like fashion. (Full translation is still in the works.) This is what his outfit looked like:

oxventurers guild | the hobby horses

unlike my other designs where i let everyone have individual colors/palettes, i tried to keep colors more consistent across these designs! the oxventurers guild has the fantasy element and theyre all very different, so the wide mishmash of colors are fine, and the hobby horses all have a lot of dark colors so that keeps them looking consistent together. but for these guys, i wanted a more consistent feel, so i tried my best to reuse colors between each design (especially between delacy and nate ^-^)

silas - ough. my boy. i wanted him to be broad with a strong build, and i hope i pulled that off :D i had so much trouble with his hat that i almost just didnt give him one, but eventually i decided it was better to just. give up and rock with it, even if he looks a bit like a mountie hbjgfjhd and he is wearing cowboy boots, theyre just tucked into his pants because he doesnt feel the need to flash them (looking at delacy, lol). he has spurs on his boots, even though he doesnt ride horses, because he likes the way they jangle <3

garnet - people really liked it when i gave garnet dark roots, so i have decided to always give her dark roots. i like how it looks hehehe and i also like to give her freckles!!! i think theyre cute!!! for the vest, i struggled for a while trying to capture the vibe of jane's vest, because its so so strange and specific in a way that makes it impossible for me to picture garnet without it. i'm pretty happy with where i landed with it, especially the pattern, since i've never tried to make a pattern like that before :3 i dont know why ive been loving patterns so much lately LOL but i will keep riding this wave and regret it later when drawing the designs again

edie - definitely the furthest departure from canon outfits, though still in the right wheelhouse. i just don't like drawing multiple layers of ruffled skirt. i didn't like how my sketches kept looking. i wanted to give her a skirt slit, especially after my friend reminded me about her thigh rifle holster. so today, i stared at a bunch of victorian ballgowns and party city costumes, and then completely redesigned her skirt before i lined these XD and i think it was worth it!! i love the layers and the way her rifle peeks out, and it meant i could show off more of her boots and give them a pretty design :]

delacy - my main thought going into drawing delacy was just. "i need to malnourish this boy" LMAO i refuse to believe that he is eating properly, i just know that he is not. otherwise, i mostly just stuck to the campaign art but scuffed up his clothes a bit. as implied on silas's notes, i very purposefully had his boots be Big. he's overcompensating a little bit :] also sorry i did not want to draw rooster so he just gets a generic handgun. i didnt feel like drawing complicated guns, and i wanted it to be a smaller handgun so that he could be poorly copying edie :') he has no trigger discipline but neither does edie so its fine

nate - that's just nate, baby!!! i think, canonically, he's meant to be a bit. emaciated. but i cant help but just picture him being a bigger guy, i think it fits his vibe better and its more fun for me to draw that way. i like having variety in body shapes, and garnet and delacy already have the rail thin thing down for this line-up. let my old man be fat !!! also. he has a weird nipple because he is transgender. heart emoji

A Note About the Society of the Blind Eye's Uniforms

I am entirely certain that I am the only person who has ever noticed this and therefore the only person that cares and is bothered by this. But I do wish that when people drew Fiddleford within Society of the Blind Eye garb that they changed his outfit up a little from the standard uniform. Because as the leader and founder of the organization, it would be useful for his outfit to be slightly different in order to distinguish his rank and role in the Society, and it's also a fun excuse to dress Fiddleford up in something a little more fancy!

For a moment I want all of us to take a moment to appreciate the Society of the Blind Eye's standard uniform.

It's a design that is simple, effective, and yet quite visually distinct and interesting. Those deep reds that make it stand out in much the same way that the Journals do.

A simple, clean design that makes it easy to animate and duplicate, but can also be mildly altered to suit the variety of Gravity Falls' different body types while maintaining that cohesive appearance!

But it also has just enough bespoke and little details to keep it from being generic!

The hoods being low enough to cover the wearer's eyes and frame the rest of their faces in shadow, speaking to the anonymous nature of the organization, while also giving them an intimidating appearance.

A little bit of pragmatic design where they have drawstrings to protect the members from the energy blasts of the Memory Gun while they are observing it being used. (Though unless the outfits are like... Lined with some kind of metal, the drawstrings would likely do little more than protect their eyes from the bright lights.) But when the hoods are drawn down like this, it also emphasizes the Society's symbol and in a way make the members of the Society almost look inhuman!

And apparently they're pretty comfortable to boot! They sure look cozy!

But I think that I might be the only one who's noticed... Hey! Ivan's outfit is actually slightly different from the rest!

Unlike everyone else whose hoods flop down in the back to a soft point, his stands up to a sharper point! And his outfit and hood also lack the split down the middle that everyone else's outfits feature!

It's a small difference, but if you know this and pay attention, you can visually pick Ivan out in any scene that he's in!

And within the organization itself, these are likely deliberate differences to distinguish Ivan's role within the Society's higherarchy. Tragically, we never get to see Fiddleford in his Society of the Blind Eye robes, though there is little doubt that he had such an outfit, if he didn't outright design the Society's uniforms himself! And given how Ivan has custom robes, it's very likely that Fiddleford did too. Likely robes that were even more distinguished and fancy than Ivan's!

So please! When drawing Fiddleford as the leader of the Society of the Blind Eye, I would LOVE it if you gave him some little extra defining features to make him stand out from the rest of the Society as a very fancy, distinguished, and important boy! And if I may make a suggestion....... HOW ABOUT A CAPE!???

Now it's possible that this statue might not have been originally depicting a Society of the Blind Eye member and the symbol could have been added later, the details of which will likely be discussed in my next Society of the Blind Eye post but like... Fiddleford could look hella cool in a cape. He deserves it! A cape would be neat! But it's certainly not necessary. I just want to see more varied, silly, and interesting designs with Fiddleford's Society of the Blind Eye outfit is all! :D

More Yu-Gi-Oh sillies for you, all with varying degrees of silly lmao xD This time of year I get very nostalgic (and often melancholic) about my figure skating days so have some winter boys :'D I just kind of freestyled their outfits here but I think it came out really nice anyway ;u; I love drawing flowing scarves and such, they're so fun Then my word association brain took and ran with the other definition of the word "skater" and uh... well xD The idea wouldn't leave my head after that and it made me laugh out loud repeatedly while drawing it so that's gotta count for something, right? And then my buddy @eleanorose123 just finished her rewatch of 5Ds and I was comparing some music from it to Kirby Air Ride's soundtrack so you get Yusei and Kirby this time heehee :'D Two legendary drago(o)ns :] why the fuck did i make myself draw the dragoon and the duel runner on one of my worst brain days idkkkkkkkk

Anyway a lot of firsts in this set in terms of characters drawn, I have no idea who I may end up drawing next during this escapade, but I guess that's part of the fun, right? Time doesn't feel real right now but filling it with art while I try not to snap in two from stress and anguish is certainly not a bad way to go about it either! Until next time, folks <3

The little letter on both their outfits is a character that means togetherness I believe, commonly used in weddings.

His color pallette was difficult to work with, I ended up color picking from lbd, possessed wukong and Emily herself

I wanted to go for more of a clouds theme and stars (flowers of course cause, wedding. Duh) and had to resist bringing him out cause it is a plot point that all of mk's jewels were stolen.

Also no headband. I don't know if he'd wear it to his wedding but in this au, he doesn't for the time being.

Cultural references!

If anyone remembers that tumblr thread bout mulan's drag name 'hua ping' being slang for a twink this is similar.

Another slang for gayness is cut sleeve (there's a whole ass story bout a gay emperor and his boyfriend) but anyways since Emily's arm was rotting away there, I thought it appropriate. (Tied in with that rip up to his thigh in the robe, I think you get the picture lol)

For anyone drawing a hanfu or traditional Chinese clothing in general, it's meant to be folded right over left (see red son for reference),the other way round is for the dead. And I thought that be a fun detail as well as the white robe being used for the dead as opposed to the red one for celebration

anyway that's all I can think of for now, I'm going to bed before I get yelled at :D

As for your question--confession time: I really...don't care for AUs that much 😔😔 I consider myself the vanilla-est consumer in this regard, but when I'm into a piece of media, I generally prefer stuff that adheres to the canon universe. This also goes along with fic-reading--I don't really ever read AUs that are so divorced from the source material. I suppose it's because I get into a story/movie/game etc for a reason, so removing all those elements until it's stripped bare feels like something brand new entirely, and thus not what I came for. Idk if that makes sense 🤷‍♀️

That isn't to say I dislike all of it--I do find it fun when I see others interpreting characters in different settings and scenarios, etc. I just don't tend to partake personally~

Broadly speaking, I like to dress up characters a lot, so I suppose that's my preferred AU method, lol. I've done a few cod pieces (lol) like that and they were fun~ I do have a few visions of my OCs in certain outfits (maybe some period clothing eventually 🤫) But for now, I think I like having them as they are 🥰

Hi there! I wasn't here for ages. Too many things happened, bad things mostly. I lost my will to draw but I still love Dark Kingdom.
