i am fucking Thinking about how death is handled in destiny 2 once again.
in regards to guardians itā€™s almost treated as like a joke or something deeply unserious? possibly even alien in a way due to how we kill and destroy and wreck havoc against our alien foes, but we ourselves never die. itā€™s really interesting to me cause there really isnā€™t a lot that can permanently kill a guardian so it makes sense weā€™d have this perception. like off the top of my head you have weapons of sorrow, hive rituals where the light is drained from a guardian, and paracausal beings which ofc includes other guardians. but that isnā€™t a lot, most deaths are not permanent and so this perception of death among guardians seems like death really isnt that big of a deal.
we jump off the tower and then get resurrected and have a little laugh about it. guardians constantly kill each other for fun in crucible. we are always doing incredibly stupid shit but we are rewarded because our enemies do not share in our immortality. itā€™s fascinating bc this not only makes us become riskier as time goes on due to being rewarded (enemies defeated) for our lack of self preservation, but this also makes guardians as a whole uniquely unsuited to handle grief and loss. if you spend your whole unlife winning and thinking that if a friend dies theyā€™ll just come right back, itā€™s such a shock if (or rather when) they actually do die permanently. and then that guardian has to spend the rest of their immortal, undying life remembering. they have to live with that while they watch the newer guardians flood into the tower with the same naive disposition as they once had.
iā€™m sure guardians know theoretically they could die permanently at any point, especially because of those like dredgen yor, but i feel like for most itā€™s one of those things that most would say ā€œwell that would never happen to meā€ until it does happen. guardians seem to just have this inability to let go and it makes me want to bite drywall because i think abt it too long and start going feral. like!! the past may be the past but it sure doesnā€™t feel like it when youā€™re immortal and you remember that shit clear as day!!! aghhhh pacing around my room in circles and eating ROCKS

A friend of mine sent me a yt video of a guy who was relocating frog eggs (prolly a vernal pool) and showed 1000s of baby frogs coming out of the water in his backyard. she asked me how I felt about it as a ecologist. I felt like it was irresponsible to do, especially to post videos on it, but probably not "ecological terrorism" like people in the comments were saying, because I see baby frogs in nature come out of water in hoards sometimes too. Kind of a mixed bag.
But I wanted to ask you, since you're a herpetologist and waaay more experienced than me: how do you feel about the yt channel "frog army YouTube"?
Many frogs and toads are classical R-strategists. Some toads can lay 20+ THOUSAND eggs in a single clutch. The whole point of that strategy is that not all of the offspring survive. In fact, it would be really rather bad if all of the offspring were to survive, because (1) they wouldn't be feeding the predators and decomposers that live off of their noble sacrifice, and (2) they will require massively more resources than they otherwise would. It can have all kinds of detrimental down-stream effects.
This is the reason we often see swarms of tadpoles darkening some small pools (especially ones where there are no fish!), and later hoards of froglets (that's the technical term) emerging from pools at once. It's an evolutionary strategy, that only few individuals survive to achieve reproductive age.
Point 1: it is *fine* if not all the tadpoles survive to adulthood. That's how the system is supposed to work. You are not doing the system favours if you are changing tadpole survivorship to 100%.
Now, humans really are fucking things up in a lot of environments. Environmental pollutants, like heavy metals, can cause major issues for wildlife, and especially frogs, which (1) are not as vagile as e.g. birds and medium- to large-sized mammals and thus cannot escape the problem zone effectively, and (2) are EXTRA sensitive to the environment because of their permeable skin.
Point 2: we do have some responsibility to do something if we notice that there is a major problem emerging, which could dramatically alter the population dynamics for one or more generations of frogs.
However, *moving* clutches of eggs that are found in polluted pools is not the right move, especially for your average person. There are many reasons that it is not the right move, but chief among them are
(1) A lot of frogs that lay eggs in vernal pools have tadpoles that cannot survive being in larger ponds, and certainly cannot survive in streams or other bodies of flowing water.
(2) A lot of frogs that lay their eggs in vernal pools are already adapted to less than ideal conditions, and have excellent strategies to overcome those conditions, such as incredibly quick metamorphosis (sometimes just a few days!)
(3) By moving clutches of eggs, you could easily be moving the pathogens or pollutants that are causing the problem in the first place.
(4) If there is Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis fungus around, you are spreading chytrid, and that is VERY bad. Chytridiomycosis has already driven several frog species to extinction, and caused massive population collapse in several others.
(5) If you do not know the species, attempts to rescue them might be aiding the advance of an invasive species.
(6) It's often illegal to intervene! Many species are protected by law, and you are not allowed to remove them from the wild. Consult your local laws.
Point 3: the responsibility to do something does not include removing the frogs and raising a frog army.
So what should we do if we find a clutch of eggs in an oily pool? Or in a nearly dried out puddle?
First assess the nature of the problem. Is the pool just about to dry out? Then leave it alone. The tadpoles will probably be fine (and if they're not, they'll provide rich nutrients to predators and decomposers). But are there signs of pollution? Then assess: is the pollution covering a larger area? Or is it localised? If you find dead frogs or other amphibians is a major warning sign, and it needs to be brought to the relevant authorities. Contact your local environmental agency/department, and notify them of the precise location of the problem, and its extent. Document everything with photos and videos.
Point 4: there are organisations and agencies specifically tasked with intervening in cases of environmental damage. It is *your* job to bring it to their attention, but unless instructed by them, you need not take any further action. It is their job to know what to do, and to take appropriate action.
TL;DR: 'Raising a frog army' is for the likes, not the frogs, and is not environmentally responsible or ethically defensible. Build a home for the frogs, and they will come.

Frozen Iron Veins
Weekly one chunk biome 1 REMADE!
Left is new, right is old
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it's the final month of my little weekly one chunk biome project, and I feel like I've improved a lot with my builds, so to showcase some of that improvement I thought it'd be fun to try and revisit and remake the first four builds I made for this project every week! These builds are seperate from the project itself
The first one was Frozen Iron Veins, and this one turned out to be an even bigger difference than I expected.
It was the first build I made for this project, so I didn't really know what I was doing with my terrain building, and I can very clearly see that now when I look at the messy texturing of the floor, and the placements of the ice were really messy as well. The inconsistency of the snow layers on the ground don't make any sense either. Everything was just messy lol.
So I tried to fix all that... and I think it went really well actually
The shaping of the terrain in the new one is much nicer and smoother with the way I like to use slabs nowadays, and the texturing of the calcite and snow isn't just literally randomized with a trowel mod anymore. I stopped using that tool a couple months ago with Scorched Path, and ever since then I've noticed a big improvement in my builds actually lol
I made the iron veins a bit bigger than I first expected, but I quite like how much bigger they look here. Especially the ice surrounding it is a lot better since I tried to place it a bit more like they're spiked away from the veins, if that makes any sense.
Lastly, the plantage just gives the build a lot more life, which it desperately needed since it looked quite dull imo.
Overall I think this was a really great improvement, I'm really happy to see how much I've learned throughout this year cause that was exactly what I was hoping when I started this project.
Next week will be time for Golden Hell :)

After Hours SMP lore makes me soooo insane. they have so many problems. Shout out to Allrich and Psyan being unable to talk without arguing. Shout out to Phea still thinking her and Kab are "Best Friends!!" (they're not and Kab is using them.) Phea being SO scared of being alone that they cling to everyone, even the people who hurt them.
Psyan still being SO bitter about the betrayal after months (rightfully so imo!) and having everything that happened with Kaboodle blamed on him. Bro is so alone and Angry and doesn't understand why everyone is being so secretive around him and avoiding him. Phea STILL wants to be best friends with Psyan and Kaboodle after everything. Even if she doesn't get why Pysan is still so mean to them. Allrich resents Kab and wants to be free from his soul being owned by her but is holding on for Phea's sake. Horrible, horrible cycle.

What Starstruck Dee theory have people made that is your favourite?
there have been quite a lot, and i genuinely love them all!
early on i think the most popular theory was that she was possessed or had been possessed at some point, most likely by dark matter. she actually debunked this theory personally, but i think people just assumed she was lying! šŸ˜‚
my favourite part is not any one theory, but watching a shift in thoughts over time as more things are revealed, and seeing people share theories/work together in comments and reblogs. i like the "OOHHH WWWWHAT...!?!" moments a lot; whether they are a reaction to my storytelling or to other folks' detective work!
early theories revolved around how she was weird for a waddle dee, or at least a native of popstar. despite my never explicitly confirming anything to the contrary, theories have now broadly shifted to assuming she is not from popstar at all, and most people do now generally agree she's not really a waddle dee.
i don't recall exactly who first came up with each theory (though some big players are @the-void-is-a-disappointment who did a huge amount of early deetective work and encouraged me to build it as a story for solving, @shibuya-toasted-with-extra-cream, @graycoin and @jojo-schmo) and i'm not sure which of these theories are still held by anyone
but here a few of my favourites, roughly in order that they started appearing...
ā™»ļø she's a total mimic species like kirby or void, copying things around her either by intent or by accident šŸ—‘ļø similar to above, but she's an incorrect copy or a "beta" mock-up type of a waddle dee šŸ§š that she was just born different, like a fae changeling, and might have been hidden away when young as a result šŸ•°ļø she is something totally inorganic and/or mechanical, created by or like the clockwork stars or stardream, perhaps wish contingent šŸ„‡ sometimes attached to the above, she was created to serve some sort of Greater Purpose. she might have failed at it or been flawed, and was subsequently discarded on popstar šŸŒ  a dozen and one wildly different things connected to the "falling star that hit her". alien life form on the meteor transferred into her on impact. infection by intergalactic bacteria/dark matter. simply massive concussive trauma that fucked up her signature (back when we thought that was the only thing wrong with her). the star was magic and fused with her. she hatched from it and is literally a star herself. probably missing some here. šŸŖ waddle dee from a different place/planet. this one is quite a sensible theory, given that we do see many quite different dees! šŸ¤ she is a fragmented piece of void/void termina. this one in particular i know is @shibuya-toasted-with-extra-cream 's ongoing theory and she's put in a lot of really cool work towards it! āš”ļø she's somehow connected to the heroes of yore. this theory i think has only started popping up since galacta knight has become a reoccurring visitor in her storyline and we've started asking questions about her familiar looking magic spears, but you can certainly 1hko @moonverc3x with this one šŸ§æ she's connected to the matters. sometimes soul, because it's sometimes star themed and lacks a token representative. where as a connection to dream might link her to fecto forgo/fecto elfilis in some way (a creature also well known for a catastrophic meteor attack). i've also seen folks confident that she's connected to heart matter as well, probably again due to everyone's favourite grumpy swan showing up
this is all i can think of or locate right now, but there's been a pretty wide range of things. i feel there has been a rather interesting transition over time from "she's a messed up waddle dee" to "she's probably connected to a universal superpower of some kind" which i am genuinely really really thrilled about?! šŸ˜‚ what a glow up for a pathetic little wawa!!!
i'm also personally really fond of seeing how people's existing biases influence what they can find and draw connections in. for instance: i know @jojo-schmo loves the forgotten land and elfilis, and digs into those connections and draws out some really cool stuff because her knowledge is already so specialised! i think this is the true highlight of working on this story for me, people theorising and engaging in the lore, and laser pin-pointing things that tie into our personal faves-- the way we tend to do with kirby lore as a whole-- is such uninhibited delight
i sincerely hope people will enjoy where starstruck's story does go, in the end!!

IMAGINE A MASQUERADE BALL WITH XIAO???
ā€¦see, youā€™ve done the very dangerous thing of reminding me of the 100 followers special continuation i was planning that includes xiao and heizouā€¦ and a little of my cinderella au with him, too.Ā
but i need to brainrot about thisĀ now.
thing isā€¦ we could go down the usual route of fantasy masquerade ball with big fancy chandeliers and a nice ballroom, but i feel like a spin could be put on it to make it more interesting.
namely, cyberpunk; a setting that i think fits xiao very well. (let me generate some ideas for a secondā€¦)
maybe this masquerade ball is inspired by old fragments of books and paintings uncovered in the wreckage of historical buildings, and a group of people are trying to resurrect it, just for fun. itā€™s likely nowhere as grande as the ā€˜properā€™ ones, and takes place in some abandoned warehouse or the basement of a pub. the music is an electronic, bass-y version of some classical pieces, performed by a mini-orchestra of electric classical instruments. there are some asymmetrical make-shift chandeliers welded from old bits of metal hanging from the ceiling, sporting some LED light bulbs.Ā
people come wearing all sorts of clothing; most try to imitate the gowns and suits worn in the old days but with a spin of cyberpunk, with metal masks and hand gauntlets, while a few wear visors and their typical fashion.
xiaoā€™s mask is no doubt based on his yaksha mask, put together with metal and cogs and some pieces of wood, and there are neon blue lights around the eye sockets, which mirror his original maskā€™s glowing eyes. the fangs are made of steel and bronze.Ā
the atmosphere is lively, although the location is quite dark. as they dance, people try to guess who the person behind the mask is. xiao prefers not to know.Ā
xiao is a really, really good dancer. he meets you in one of the dances, and youā€™re floored by his dancing. his movements are fluid and graceful, almost like water, and each step and twirl is precise, like heā€™s been doing this all his life. heā€™s actually quite courteous while dancing, too; heā€™s a guy who prefers actions over words, so itā€™s no wonder that he lets his dancing speak for itself. he finds it so much easier to carefully spin you around than start a conversation, in which heā€™s certain he would come across as brash.
meanwhile, you try your very best to figure out who this person is, and whether youā€™ve met him before, but his identity eludes you. you only spend a brief time together before the music changes and youā€™re both met with new partners, but somehow he still stands out to you the most.Ā
after the dance, the crowds disperse, and you try and look for him, absentmindedly taking off your mask because the dance is over. for a moment, you catch a glimpse of glowing blue in the crowd, meeting your eyes from behind a familiar metal mask. when you blink, heā€™s gone, and you donā€™t find him again afterwards.
(meanwhile, xiao probably just ducked behind some wall or pillar because he wasĀ notĀ prepared for you to be so stunning behind that mask and needed a second to gather his thoughts.)
