Rants!

Dante/Raiden: This ship comes from the 2006 Playstation Magazine (PSM) issue 110 endpage drawn by comic artist Adam Warren (most known for his comic Empowered) depicting the hypothetical timeline where the PSM swimsuit special is replaced with a 600 page erotic “Dante/Raiden slash fanfiction.” In this panel Dante’s DMC2 design is shown above Raiden’s MGS2 design (notably the most hated versions of these characters at the time, though considering Warren’s feelings towards Dante and Raiden, this pairing was most likely shown to baffle the reader with a well beloved charactered and a much hated character doing something “humiliating” aka. participating in homosexuality). Dante says “Why can’t I quit yew,” a reference to brokeback mountain, and Raiden says “Please be gentle… like snake”

Obviously this panel is meant to be a joke at the expense of both women who write fanfiction, and gay people, made more clear by the second appearance of “Raidante” in Warren’s work, in which Dante is reading yaoi fanfic and remarks “As if I’d settle for someone as lame as Raiden if I was gay!” However, likely because he has never played Metal Gear, Warren fails to consider the thematic implications of this pairing, considering the narratives of each character.

Dante is a demi-human, ashamed of his demon heritage but forced to reconcile with it. To cope with this, he adopts the persona of a “badass devil hunter with a devil may care attitude” as a form of escapism. Because he cannot accept his nature, nor can he come to terms with his past trauma of demons killing his close ones, he remains in stasis and cannot form deep connections with others.

Raiden is human by nature, but was robbed of his flesh by the patriots. Raised a child soldier, he is emotionally stunted and has very little personality to call his own, resorting to grasping at the persona of “Solid Snake” and tacking on his mannerisms to fill what gaps are left in his development. Even after starting a new after the big shell incident, he relapses again into the ego-less being he was at the age of 10, proclaiming himself a weapon and throwing himself at danger and death in the belief that it’s his purpose.

Both of these people are fundamentally unable to connect with others, breaking all of their connections and distancing themselves both out of fear of getting hurt and genuine inability to retain relationships. They use violence and self sacrifice as substitute for meaning in their life, and degrade themselves to that of a sword. Then, when meeting someone who they recognize all their behaviors in, what would happen? Do their own tactics of isolation work on themselves? Do they cancel out, or override each other?

Adam Warren is too much of a coward to explore this concept in a 600 page fanfic, so I will.

What if you lost a big battle and got exiled, and you blame yourself for the death of your crush. And then you join a mercenary company and found love, but what's this? IT"S THE METAPHORICAL GHOST OF YOUR CRUSH WITH A STEEL CHAIR! You leave behind the company to raise your dead crush's son, as a way of redeeming yourself, and then Myles dies, and also sike! it was all a lie, there was never anything you could've done to make up for your failure, and Myles was in on the lie from the beginning . Part of the tragedy is built on the Aegon Blackfyre theory, if everything was built house of cards of lies and guilt -- Myles caught feelings for a mark but sent Jon off to fight for a lie anyway.

I love how much of an idealist and a horrible judge of character jon is when it comes to his romantic interests. 'oh his nickname is blackheart but he's actually really kindhearted and nice'. The two bits of flashback dialogue we get from myles (he is mentioned 14 times in the text and has been dead for 4 yrs) are 1) 'i like if people think i'm scary and cruel, i consider that good method of leadership' and 2) monologue about razing a town to the ground with civilians in it, as a kind of pointed 'you wouldn't have lost that battle(and everything) if you did this' example (It's definitely Myles fault that Jon inevitably commits warcrimes when TWOW comes out). Bonus non jon pov, 3) eating the food of a pair of orphan children and then laughing at their request for help. Yeah Jon, I'm sure he was nice to you personally, but Imma be real, that nickname is deserved.

📚 Terminé de leer 'Carmilla' en la primera semana del mes (lo disfruté mucho) y luego mi cabeza entró en modo «¿Leer? ¿Qué es leer?». Bueno, sí empecé otro libro (Nickel Boys), pero no avancé mucho. Y ya vi que lo de DC Cómics es un camino de ida: una empieza leyendo los runs de Blue Beetle y termima leyendo fanfics de Jon Kent que abordan el trauma que el canon ignora, lmao (y espérense a que empiece con los hijos adoptivos y no adoptivos de Bruce Wayne).

📺 Maratoneé 'Superman & Lois', la cual no había querido ver antes porque pensaba que era muy como las demás series del arrowverse, pero, si bien no es perfecta, sí es mejor que las otras del arrowverse (igual no me hagan mucho caso, yo solo llegué a ver cuatro temporadas de Supergirl + los crossovers). Y realmente nos dio unos estupendos Clark y Lois como padres y esposos (los amo, clois my beloved, me hacen creer en el amor, etc.); va a doler decir adiós el próximo lunes con su final. También terminé dos kdramas que recomiendo mucho: 'Jeongnyeon' y 'Love in the Big City'. Y 'The Franchise' la vi por Daniel Brühl (porque ya saben que en esta cuenta vemos cualquier cosa que tenga a Daniel Brühl en ella); una comedia de HBO que solo por momentos me funcionó.

🎬 En cuanto a películas, vi 'Brokeback Mountain' por primera vez y sigo sad. Otras que destaco son 'The Wild Robot' (sí lloré) y la adaptación del musical de 'Wicked' (que no me gusta que la hayan dividido en 2 pero a la vez siento que el segundo acto podría beneficiarse con ello más que este primero; habrá que esperar para saberlo).

🎶 Y pues siguiendo con Wicked, estos últimos días estuve escuchando mucho las canciones en sus versiones de la película, que en general me parecen chulas.

What ships do you like? I tend not to be interested in the popular ships because I alike genre shows and those couples don’t really get popular or one dies horribly but usually those shows give me the clear eyed, obsessive, emotional intensity I enjoy lol. Plus devotion is hot idc! The regular couples are either boring or saddled with soap levels of drama (always with a man too) which rounds back to boring or the plot of the show will be good but the actresses couldn’t be less interested in playing lesbians. Half the time I see lesbian couples on my dash (rare because most of the lesbian ships are actually bisexual women) their intimacy looks extremely forced. Especially the kisses like you’d think someone was holding the actresses at gunpoint to kiss and it takes me out of the moment because how can I get invested when the actors are clearly disgusted lol. Or they never kiss and only hold hands or touch for heads which is annoying especially when the straight couples get full sex scenes. Like I’m not advocating for anyone to do anything they’re uncomfortable with or for women to bare their bodies but there are ways to convincing and tastefully show intimacy and I feel like lesbian couples hardly get that.

Honestly, I'm not too picky about ships, because if it's written well enough, I can believe it works. But with femslash, it feels like I've only got a select few options, since as of like 2016 onwards, pretty much every gay ship has at lease one character transed, and the ship is suddenly hetero (like adora/catra. They're always giving a woman a dick, and to me, that just reads as 'I'm a homophobe who can't write gay sex). If Heath Ledger can act his ass off in Brokeback Mountain, it shouldn't be that hard for female actresses to do the same in their roles, especially when they know ahead of time that they'll be playing a gay relationship...

That said, I don't really read that much femslash, especially since I tend to read older fanfiction or fandoms, and there's just not all that much in comparison to other ships. But that said:

-Jon/Elias (The Magnus Archives. I hate Martin. I hate him so much.)

I'll read other ships if they're convincing enough, but these are the ones I actively search for.
