MOVIE MUSICAL DIVAS TOURNAMENT

Clang clang clang went the trolley. Hello, and welcome to the Movie Musical Divas tournament. We've just come off a riveting bracket-style tournament dedicated to my beloved Broadway Divas from the 1980s to present day, and have graduated to movie musicals of the 20th century. Submissions for movie musical Divas are now closed, but additional propaganda for competing Divas is welcome.

Round 1 will begin July 1st, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. EST. This tournament will not be bracket-style to free up some of the rigidity of pairings I'd boxed myself into with the Broadway Divas. A sublime 100 Divas will compete for the crown of best movie musical actress.

"But what about [movie musical Diva who stared in one musical in the late 1990s as a 20-something]?" We're playing fast and loose with my guidelines and rules here, but I've made the executive decision to exclude movie musical divas who began late in the timeframe as very young women. We love and respect MILFs in this house.

"But what about [my favorite Diva who didn't make the list]?" All but one submission made it into the tournament unscathed. If she's not on our list, she wasn't submitted.

"That actress was only in [insert show here] so she shouldn't count." Because movie musicals are a niche genre, and many major movie musical stars only ever did one or two in their careers, I've been more lenient on some single-show credits as submissions have gone on.

"Please, please, please, can I submit [Diva] even though it's past deadline?" No, unfortunately the submission window has closed, and I'm rather partial to this neat and tidy hundred. That being said...if you submit her in the next two or three days, and I personally am deeply in love with her, I might allow it. Might.

"What happens if there's a tie?" Great question. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Propaganda Rules, Guidelines, and Questions:

“I have additional propaganda for a Diva.”  Excellent, I love to see it. Send me an ask, DM me, or reblog the poll and add your propaganda to it. If you see a separate post that relates to your Diva, tag @broadwaydivastournament and I will add it to the queue. I may not reblog your post if said Diva is already swimming in propaganda and her opponent is left high and dry, for the sake of fairness.

"Can I submit propaganda even if it's from a movie musical outside the timeframe?" No post-20th century propaganda will be allowed. For example: I will gleefully reblog anything Angela Lansbury from pre-2000s movie musicals, but will not reblog posts that focus on her post-2000s roles like the Balloon Lady in Mary Poppins Returns. Additionally, as much as it pains me as a self-proclaimed Broadway Baby, I will not be accepting stage performances UNLESS the musical in question has been filmed in full and released as a proshot. Concert performances or television appearances will also be rejected, unless by some fluke, the tv appearance is one of those feature-length special episodes. And even then, it'll be a case-by-case basis.

I am a hater at heart, and so I actually do post/reblog negative propaganda, but it cannot be gratuitous or overtly cruel. Propaganda of this nature should remain respectful, constructive, and reasonable. Acceptable examples include: thoughtful critique of a performance; whether the Diva was miscast in roles; why the Diva is less worthy of votes compared to her competitor based on the films and roles specifically. Personal assassination of a Diva's private life will not be allowed. The isn't the ethics and morality committee.

The views expressed in (most of) the propaganda are not my own. Nearly all submissions were done anonymously and will be credited as such. Any propaganda I personally submit will be done through my personal blog. If you've been here, you probably already know it. If you're new, I'm sure it will be very obvious soon enough. I will not be editing or condensing any propaganda submitted beyond a cursory spell-check, no matter how disdainful I personally am of this whole no capitalization business. I also do not have time to review all videos in full, so if you would like any videos appropriately tagged for sensitive topics, please let me know.

“Where are the hot movie musical men?”  I welcome someone else to start up a hot movie musical man tournament, but it will not be me. I am a lesbian and thoroughly unqualified to oversee a tournament of men. Despite my extensive movie musical knowledge, I have no confidence that I'd be able to name more than five movie musical actors off the top of my head this very minute. (Robert Preston, Yul Bryner, Christopher Plummer- yeah, that's it. That's all I got without thinking about it too hard.)

“I think you forgot to add my propaganda?”  It most likely has to do with broken links. Most Divas have a fairly reasonable amount of propaganda, and so I won't be excluding based on quantity, at least to start. That may change down the line as more comes in.

Just some collages of some crossover ships that I’ve recently developed.

Wulf (Danny Phantom) x Gus (ROTTMNT) (Claws & Spikes/Gulf/Wus/Big Gay Doggie Husbands): Of course, this ship came to me not long after I started shipping Raph and Jazz. This ship came solely from my personal headcanon, where Gus is the companion/bodyguard of Octavia Goetia because she is Big Mama's goddaughter/niece, and Wulf is Danny's bodyguard/companion, so Wulf and Gus bonded over their protectiveness~

Melinda (Fantasia) x Nessus (Hercules) (Nelinda/Messus):

I really like the idea of Nessus being the first centaur Melinda met, and she accepted him as her mate unconditionally, which was a huge surprise to him and to her friends who find him ugly and scary. Melinda is happy with Nessus, and that's all that matters.

Angela (Gargoyles) x Batgirl/Barbara Gordon (BTAS) (Babsgela/AngelBabs/Barbala/Oracle Angel/ForeignAngel/Bluebelle & Lavender): I recently recalled my friend @frie-ice mentioning a Batman and Gargoyles fanfiction she planned to write a year or two ago. This got me thinking about how Barbara and Angela would bond and interact, and now I ship them! Don't worry, I still love Angela and Broadway too.

June 23, 1997 — Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz passed away today 🕊️

Born Betty Dean Sanders, she was an educator, civil rights advocate and the wife of Malcolm X.

Dr. Shabazz grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where her foster parents largely sheltered her from racism. She attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where she had her first encounters with racism. Unhappy with the situation in Alabama, she moved to New York City, where she became a nurse.

It was in New York that she met Malcolm X. The couple married in 1958.

Along with her husband, Dr. Shabazz left the Nation of Islam in 1964. She witnessed his assassination the following year.

MEMORIALS:

•In late 1997, the Community Healthcare Network renamed one of its Brooklyn, New York, clinics the Dr. Betty Shabazz Health Center, in honor of Shabazz.

•The Betty Shabazz International Charter School was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1998 and named in her honor.

•In 2005, Columbia University announced the opening of the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. The memorial is located in the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated.

•In March 2012, New York City co-named Broadway at the corner of West 165th Street, the corner in front of the Audubon Ballroom, Betty Shabazz Way.

PORTRAYALS IN FILM:

🎬Yolanda King, the daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King, played Dr. Shabazz in the 1981 television movie Death of a Prophet.

🎬She was portrayed by Angela Bassett in the 1992 film Malcolm X.

🎬Bassett also played the part of Dr. Shabazz in the 1995 film Panther.

🎬Dr. Shabazz was portrayed by Victoria Dillard in the 2001 film Ali.

My Thoughts on Gargoyles Issue 5: Render Unto Caesar

Wow what a great issue, it was pretty tense and some heart breaking moments.

I’m glad Amazon/Kindle sorted out the problems, so I was able to read issue 5 at 5am before I went to work.

Spoilers

Just loved Hudson’s narration in this, I still hear Ed Asner voice while reading this.

Hudson: Son of my heart, oh my gosh!!! my heart!!! I was nearly in tears.

I was right about Lexington talking to Amp online. 

I squealed that Broadway and Angela want to become mates, asking Coldfire to perform their mating ceremony. I just love that Angela wants Elisa and Katana to be her seconds, Broadway wants Lex and Brooklyn to be his seconds but thinks Brooklyn will be too busy for it, my heart melted a bit at that moment, I think Brooklyn would do it.

I thought it was strange that Goliath was put in a same block as Dracon and Brod, I would of thought he would of been put in solitary confinement.

1st person I wanted to punch in this issue was that Prison Guard, using the remote to shock Goliath, it made me sick to my stomach.

Seeing Elisa watching Goliath in his cell was heart breaking.

I wonder who donated the high-tech equipment to the Gargoyle taskforce, maybe, The Quarrymen, The Illuminati, Taro, Cyberbiotics, Nightstone, could be anyone.

Oh cool, we have a date May 15th 1997.

Nice to see Judge Ian Roebling again.

We have a new character, Tobe Crest, Goliath’s lawyer, I wonder who hired him, Xanatos, Renard or Macbeth maybe.

2nd person I wanted punch is Margot Yale, calling Goliath a thing and comparing him to a parrot.

Great to see Brooklyn step straight into leadership role without any hesitation like last time. This time he’s more mature and confident. 

Brooklyn just takes Coldstone and Coldfire to rescue Goliath, while the others stay to protect the castle because Brooklyn still doesn’t trust Xanatos.

So Goliath didn’t want to be rescued, kinda reminds of Beast from X-Men animated series where Magneto tries to rescue Beast from Prison but Beast wouldn’t go and would rather have his day in court.

I do worry that Goliath is going to get a lot of heat for the attempted prison escape, especially with that Guard has the remote for Goliath’s shock collar.

Can’t wait for issue 6, it’s just a shame we got to wait a month.

I am very happy for you and send many warm happy thoughts for your opening in London. I know you will be marvelous in ‘Gypsy’ and I am only sad that we cannot be there for your opening—It will be an exciting occasion & I will be thinking of you on the 17th. I must go to Wash. D. C. & Phila. mid Dec. & will just be returning here at that time for all of our Christmas parties for old & young—I hope it won’t be too long before our next trip to London & we can come & see you—God bless!” Matted and framed, so both sides can be read, with the original mailing envelope, addressed in Kelly’s hand, to an overall size of 10.25 x 15. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light soiling to second page and envelope and the mat obscuring a few letters at the end of each line of text on the front.

Kelly had originally been cast to star along with Gray and James Stewart in the 1957 film Designing Women. However, her engagement to Prince Rainier prevented her from taking the role, which instead went to Lauren Bacall. Despite her inability to become a breakthrough star on the big screen, Gray had a very long and successful career on the stage in London and in New York. In late 1973, she replaced Angela Lansbury in the London revival of Gypsy, as Lansbury moved on to New York to play the same role. Gray would eventually replace Lansbury there as well, returning to Broadway again. A wonderful letter of support from the former actress, who never quite cut all her Hollywood ties. Gargoyles x Mobile Fighter G Gundam

In the city of New York, the Gargoyles - Goliath, Hudson, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, and Angela - are patrolling the skies when they detect a strange energy signature. They soon discover a massive mobile suit, the Shining Gundam, piloted by Domon Kasshu, a skilled martial artist and warrior from the East Asian nation of Neo-Japan.

Domon has arrived in New York to participate in an international martial arts tournament, sponsored by the wealthy and influential Xanatos family. However, a dark force, the Shadow Clan, seeks to disrupt the tournament and use its energy for their own evil purposes.

The Gargoyles and Domon form an unlikely alliance to stop the Shadow Clan and protect the city. Goliath and Domon engage in an epic battle, with the Gargoyle leader impressed by the Shining Gundam's advanced technology and Domon's skill. Meanwhile, the other Gargoyles use their unique abilities to take down the Shadow Clan's minions.

As the battle rages on, the Gargoyles learn about the world of martial arts and the honor code that Domon and other warriors live by. They realize that their own struggles against the forces of darkness are mirrored in Domon's quest to protect the tournament and its participants.

Together, the Gargoyles and Domon succeed in defeating the Shadow Clan and ensuring the tournament's success. The Xanatos family, impressed by their bravery and skill, offer their support and resources to the Gargoyles in their ongoing fight against evil.

David Xanatos, the patriarch of the Xanatos family, sees potential in the Gargoyles and Domon as allies in his own quest for power and influence.

Brooklyn and Lexington are fascinated by the advanced technology of the Shining Gundam and try to learn more about its capabilities.

Angela and Domon share a heart-to-heart conversation about their respective roles as protectors and the burdens that come with them.
