Okay this is so specific but I picture Dirk/UltDirks headspace (DID moment) in a very specific way BUT since he has DID that means Bro Strider also has it and while Dirks is an intricate spaceship bridge with like 20 control panels and a viewport I imagine Bros headspace to be exactly like Facade the game from 2005

My design for a character concept by @random-internet-teen! She's a good friend of mine, really popped off with this one. He's the result of her basically deciding that Dave needed some sort of force of good in his life, and that's saying something. You know it's bad when any given Hal has a counterpart so much worse than him that he's no longer the evil twin by default. We've been collaborating on a fic about him, and so far, he's such a guy. He loves his girlfriend, and he loves Dave, and he has no idea how to handle literally anything.

Looking back, it’s clear that Bro Strider really wanted to be a major part of the beta kids session. He wanted to be a hero and be one of the main players. He purchases copies of the game for himself, intending to be the fourth player I guess instead of Jade? When he gives Dave his copy and leaves, the plan changes, and instead he decides to just enter the game with Dave. But before that happens he is the one to save Dave by cutting his meteor in half and throwing his rocket board to him. Once he enters, he immediately vanishes to fight monsters on LOHAC. Then he is the one to send his rocket board to catch Dream Cal, so he can send him to the ectolab, of which he’s briefly in himself. Then he goes fights Jack. He tries to initiate the scratch, but fails. At this moment it seems he was trying to be the hero to cause the scratch and create the new timeline, and of course it doesn’t work but the fact he knows about this is what’s has to happen is odd considering he seemingly never meets up with any of the other guardians. Of course Jack eventually kills him on LOWAS, and I feel like Bro genuinely believed he could’ve truly saved everyone, but alas just like post scratch Dirk, his attempts at being a hero are futile and in this case he was basically doomed from the beginning since he was never meant to play the game. It’s very similar to how Dirk fails in the game over timeline despite all that he tried to do because this is who he is. Only this time he failed because this version of him was never meant or be a hero of the game or be important, arguably bro isn’t even the “main Dirk.” Due to lacking a dream self or possibility to go god tier or any powerful abilities, he never stood a chance against Jack. His only purpose was to train Dave for sburb, and in trying to steal the spotlight from the beta kids he sealed his fate

Can you imagine being so intrinsically tied to someone you will never not be in their lives? So intrinsically tied you are them but never will be?

Dave and Dirk both grew up as themselves and essentially raising the other. Where Dirk grew up with his timeline's Bro ( Alpha Timeline Dave )—a Bro who was absent, yet such an impacting influence to Dirk as someone who /couldn't/ be there: Dave was massively way too in the past ( literally ) to be around for Dirk in the future, yet made sure to keep a secure place for him that would be protected enough FOR Dirk to be able to survive. Dirk watched all of his movies. He wanted to be everything Dave was. He wanted to meet him, know him, be with him. More than anything.

Dave grew up differently in the Beta Timeline. Dave's Bro, who was far too involved in his life. Constantly sparring him, or really calling him to strifes were he'd get his shit kicked in major, bullying him, picking fun at him, all to "train" him for the Game. Where Dave has to deal with how terrified he is of Bro and play it off—a sign of weakness was weakness after all. Beta Dirk, Bro, dies protecting Dave. Alpha Dave, Bro, dies in protecting the world so Dirk could live.

And they meet together. Years later Dirk and Dave, kids who never got to be close with their Bros who grew up scared or intimidated or inspired, meet the other one. And it is everything and none of what they could have ever hoped for.

There is something about seeing the ghost of someone and instead of haunting you like a demon infested house wanting to kill you, it haunts you like a memory. Where that hair, those shades, you know them. Where you don’t know someone yet you hate them for being everything you wanted. But still being on top of a rooftop, being vulnerable for once. Sharing a hug. "This is fucked up." "Yeah. Fucked up." Where the focal point is a form of masculinity that helps them survive or keeps them apart from others. How long can you keep swinging the blade you wielded since you were a baby? How long can you keep pretending your heart doesn't ache when you see him? How long can you keep away when you love him and hate him and want him dead but *God you want him?

What if you grew up idolizing your absent older brother who was the only connection you had to the world that had existed before the apocalypse for a long time. What if you grew up idolizing and emulating a present older brother who raised you only to realize as a teenager, after he’s dead, that your relationship was kind of fucked up and he was abusive and also he gave you a lot of sexuality hangups. Now imagine you both meet an alternate version of this brother. He’s a teenager. You’re around the same age. He was influenced in ways you can’t control by a version of you you’ve never been. And you’re literally both queer. Lots of things can happen here. Your abusive brother’s teenage self is trying so hard to be better than the worst possibility and isn’t to blame for what his alternate version did. Your absent brother’s teenage self is so present and real and not a larger of life mythological figure but you have a design he created tattooed on your arm which you did out of a desperate desire for connection. WOW.

Idk if anyone asked you this, but what's your take on the alpha kids?

I have a feeling that the alpha kids were a bit rushed? Especially Jane! (because of the trickster stuff + her being controlled by the Condesce) And the problem Dirk and Jake had was resolved so quickly that idk, it didn't feel natural to me??

ANYWAYS, I just want to know your thoughts on the alpha kids and how they would work things out and everything! :)

Less "rushed" and more "literally unfinished" imo - the same with almost all of the rest of the cast. They do get themselves into drama a lot faster than the beta kids do, but by that point in the comic, we kind of Get It, y'know? We did the song and dance already with the beta kids and trolls, there's no real reason to draw it out.

That being said, I do think if I had any major writing critique for Homestuck - like if I were being paid to edit it professionally for some sort of hypothetical director's cut - then it would be to have the alpha kids have more of a presence through acts 1-5, even if not necessarily the alpha kids exactly. More stuff like Jake sending John a happy birthday letter. Bro Strider/Momlonde/Nannasprite remain mysterious and vague in ways I think don't necessarily contribute to the story; it'd be neat, for example, for Rose to have stumbled upon some of her Mom's writings from when she was a kid, or for some second avatar of Bro in the form of a programmed robot to heckle Dave and foreshadow Dirk's splintered self/HAL.

This isn't to say I think Hussie did a BAD job, it's just going to be an issue with serial works in general - the alpha kids, their personalities, and their drama were not fully developed, if at all, at the time that the guardians were introduced, so there are things that Act 1-4 Hussie literally could not have written in that Act 5-6 Hussie probably would've. Hence, this would be a change to make in a theoretical director's cut; adding more alpha kid presence in Acts 1-4 makes it so we have to play less catch-up when the alpha kids are properly introduced.

As for how their arcs resolve... or, rather, literally don't resolve. Well, I personally believe that everything after Game Over is a heavily truncated version of the ending that was originally intended, and the alpha kids - along with most of the other characters - were kind of at the low points of their respective character arcs when Condy showed up and shit went south, and never really get the chance to pull themselves out. So, y'know, I personally believe the original ending would have had... more of that. I'm realizing now that, with the way retcon/dream/etc. mechanics work, it's totally possible for Roxy to have made a Choice with Nyx to die, but transfer her memories to an earlier version of herself, and for (Dirk) to finally make it out of the Furthest Ring to arrive in a completely different timeline. and it would be really funny

DAISY STRIDER INFO POST (thanks to @b2ne for the suggestion)

Just wanted to provide some background information for the character! It’s hard to keep track of all the weird plot shit in Homestuck, and it is just a character I made for fun, so please ignore the obvious discrepancies in the canon plot.

BACKGROUND:

Four years younger than the beta kids that had already emerged, Daisy manifested in the abandoned ectobiology lab as a young girl, left to wander the ruins of civilization in a doomed timeline, where the others had died before the game’s initiation. Equipped with only an unexplainable understanding of which direction to walk and a pair of heart-shaped sunnies, Daisy found the empty apartment that once belonged to Dirk and Dave. It was there that she grew up, surrounded by pictures and belongings of two relatives she had never met, intuitively certain that she belonged there. One day, upon discovering a copy of Sburb hidden in the apartment, she was thrown into a timeline separate from her own, thrusted into the Land of Jabberwockies and Trance (LOJAT).

In the LOJAT, Daisy found a Dirk (or “Bro”, as he was called) from another doomed timeline, one who hadn’t developed his younger self’s sociopathic tendencies. Lil Cal’s absence in his anomalous universe doomed it, and it had taken the lives of his world’s Daisy and Dave. Together, they were able to track down the living players and reunite, joining their final battle against English and assimilating into the saved world.

Now, (very cool) Bro, Dave, and Daisy are a family, with Bro filling in the void his other selves had left in Dave and Daisy’s lives. Silliness ensues, yada yada, you get the idea. More shenanigans await so I’ll just end the background here.

CHARACTER FACTS:

-Three to four years younger than Dave, about 9-10 at the current moment.

-World: Land of Jabberwockies and Trance

-Chronic sleepwalker. Bro, worried, usually leaves his door open so he can hear if she gets up and does something at night.

-Overall very cheerful. Still a kid, though, so immaturity and dramatics are still very much on the table.

-Yellow text, eyes.

-Parental lock on her computer—Lil Hal will unnecessarily censor random things she says no matter how much Bro tries to fix him. It renders her computer pretty much useless except for Pesterchum Jr.
