Advocating for peace & ceasefire: An open letter to my representatives
Hi I am Sam-Amina Matthew-John Bailey, a lifelong Coloradan, I'm sending you peace and goodwill Senators Michael Bennet, John Hickenlooper, & Representative Brittany Pettersen I must join the lively chorus of voices demanding we all do our part to unite for peace - as manifested by a deescalation of military force, advocating for Israel to cease fire, and defunding of the United States militaries role in the conflict occurring to this day in Gaza. It is so urgent for us to take action to save the lives of innocent people of all ages. We have no business encouraging or spending our tax extracted dollars on this senseless violence. Let's refocus on righteous ways we can benevolently spend our wealth that may benefit the health of our global community, such as enhanced public transportation, healthcare access, and housing unhoused peoples. As an artist among political scientists I've found the people who you serve as a sitting Senator in Colorado generally share a passionate zeal for righteousness. There's a transcendental coalition of humans all across this state that, regardless of if they identify as Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, who are sincerely God fearing people. People who long to do good to others and love our neighbors. Thus I both strategically recommend and supplicate myself to you as a voter in this state that your office becomes a vocal bastion of peace, demanding Israels ceasefire and the cessation of our peoples part in fueling genocidal missions in any part of the globe. Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, André Carson, Summer Lee, and Delia Ramirez are leading such a movement in the House. Thank you so much for your time, service, and consideration, Happy Holidays Senator Bennet, Senator Hickenlooper, & Representative Pettersen
I will be praying for the wellbeing of you & yours, Sam-Amina Matthew-John Bailey
Inshallah I'll share with y'all if my neighbors & elected representatives respond. May they be well, experiencing luxurious peace in their lives.

What is Kamala Harris doing to elect a Congress that might pass a federal right to abortion?
Abortion has always been Harris's big issue. As she now campaigns on cutting taxes and building a border wall, it's the main thing that differentiates her from Trump. In her acceptance speech, she declared, "And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, as President of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law."
What is she doing to elect people to Congress who might actually pass such a bill?
Emily's List is supporting 45 pro-choice Democratic women for the House this year. I googled "[candidate name] kamala harris" for each of them, and looked for joint appearances or other endorsements on the first page of results. Here's what I found:
Brittany Pettersen, Colorado: Harris did a joint appearance about climate in 2023.
Dina Titus, Nevada: appeared at Harris/Walz campaign rally August 11.
Hillary Scholten, Michigan: appeared w/ Harris at a reproductive rights roundtable in February 2023. Joint campaign appearance August 27.
Jahana Hayes, Connecticut: Harris visited and discussed abortion rights in 2022.
Lateefah Simon, California: Spoke at DNC (Wednesday night).
Lauren Underwood, Illinois: Joint appearance in 2022 on maternal health. Took a selfie with Harris when she arrived in Illinois for DNC.
Rebecca Cooke, Wisconsin: hosted event for Harris/Walz at her parents' farm on August 7.
Susie Lee, Nevada: appeared at Harris/Walz campaign rally August 11.
Yadira Caraveo, Colorado: Harris retweeted her post about Mental Health on August 26.
In general, the top post was usually the candidate endorsing Harris, then maybe a few news stories about this if there had been a delay, and often the candidate at some sort of watch party for Harris. Overall, these candidates are doing vastly more work to elect Kamala Harris than she is doing to elect them.
I did find an October 2018 facebook post where Harris endorsed 5 Black women running for office, including three of this year's Emily's List endorsements. I then looked at every post on that account from when Biden dropped out on July 21 to the end of August, and the only candidates I saw mentioned were herself, Trump, and Tim Walz.

I was taking pics a campaign kickoff for US House Rep Brittany Pettersen. While she was giving a speech, our Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser got down on the floor to hold Brittany's little boy. Phil is a father of two. It was such a dad thing to do and seemed so natural for him. It just warmed my heart.

How to NOT fix the opioid crisis - refuting a bad podcast episode
I listened to the episode “Fixing the Opioid Crisis ft. Rep. Brittany Pettersen” on The New Liberal Podcast. Pettersen is clearly a crackpot, and the host is oblivious.
My many complaints (a bit rough, only partially cited):
First, the phrase “opioid epidemic” is already misleading and outdated. It frames the problem as caused by the availability of opioids, and frames opioids as bad. For a rejection of the “opioid epidemic” framing, see this Leo Beletsky presentation.
One of the few good things: Pettersen wants better funding models for both naloxone (e.g. via Medicaid) and addiction treatment. I agree.
Pettersen says we should go after “traffickers,” but then it sounds like she wants to crack down on ALL drug sellers. It also sounds like she wants to consider implementing greater mass government surveillance of social media across the board (wtf), to crack down on people buying and selling what I infer are small amounts of drugs (???). This is irresponsibly unclear at best, and probably just stupid and bad.
I note, it has already been shown from multiple convergent lines of evidence that arresting drug sellers increases local overdoses (recent example).
Moreover, many anti-drug-dealer laws harm drug users, in a great many increasingly evident ways—see DPA’s “Rethinking the Drug Dealer." She ignores all this. Countless drug users share drugs with one another frequently. They are all at risk of being targeted as “drug dealers.” This is the #1 reason people don’t call 911 when they see an overdose, or why they delay calling 911—they fear police harassment and investigation. (And Good Samaritan laws only cut down a tiny fraction of this problem. Decriminalization, including for low-level dealers, is also needed.) (See parts of the Beletsky video on some of this, as well as DPA.)
Unlike Republicans, Pettersen at least acknowledges that most fentanyl comes into the US through legal ports of entry, not illegal border-crossing. But she proposes no realistic notion of how to meaningfully reduce the fentanyl coming through legal ports. There’s no reason to take this seriously. In practice this sounds like it’s just a less racist version of the same failed drug interdiction efforts that have already been discredited. Only a tiny amount of the fentanyl is ever intercepted successfully. Nobody has ever proposed a feasible way to do it, and she seemingly offers nothing new. Even if they could intercept the fentanyl, other drugs (almost surely drugs on par with fentanyl or more dangerous) (e.g. nitazenes) would take its place, or possibly fentanyl (or other synthetic opioid) production would shift to domestic. For some discussion citing a few drug policy experts, see this Vice article.
She also makes zero mention of the fact that there was no fentanyl crisis until the government cracked down on prescription opioids and heroin. The evidence has increasingly grown over the last decade that these crackdowns made everything immensely worse.
She supports Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, which have been increasingly shown to cause harm, and there’s basically no evidence they do any good. She thinks ONLY overprescription causes problems (or at least this is basically all she talks about, regarding prescriptions), and totally neglects how refusals of prescriptions, and forced tapering of patients already on prescriptions, has caused devastation to so many pain patients. She wants even MORE punishment against doctors who “overprescribe,” with no acknowledgement of how punishing doctors has already caused devastation and led many doctors to just abandon pain patients, or give Ibuprofen to surgery patients (no, seriously!), and much more. She thinks we can tell a doctor is “overprescribing” if they prescribe more than their peers in the area, which is ridiculous. She is going to make already horrible problems even worse. For some discussion of how deprescribing has caused terrible problems, see linked below (1) Zachary Siegel, and (2) Stefan Kertesz.
At no point does she ever mention policies of other countries. She never mentions Canada’s safe supply movement. She never mentions drug user advocacy for methadone in the Netherlands. She never mentions Finland’s drastic reduction in homelessness. She never mentions Portugal’s decriminalization. She never mentions Switzerland’s heroin-assisted treatment program. If only other countries besides America existed, which we could draw ideas and evidence from!
She seems vaguely friendly to decriminalization, which is better than some other politicians, but she never comes out and says it. I can only assume this reticence is because of political cowardice. Even conservatives and cops tend to say boilerplate stuff like “We can’t arrest our way out of this crisis” these days, but it means nothing if in practice they uphold criminalization. Also she never once mentions harm reduction, except naloxone—nothing about needle exchange, nor supervised consumption sites, nor drug-checking, and certainly no legal regulation. Pathetic.
She says there are no lobbyists on the issue of opioid addiction, nobody who makes money on it. This is a bizarre false statement. Many abstinence-only rehab providers make a lot of money. Many methadone clinic providers make a lot of money (and for many, their financial model would be threatened if the draconian restrictions on methadone access were lifted, so there’s an incentive against helping patients gain access----though I think Petterson might be in favor of making methadone easier to get?). Many people and organizations (often corrupt ones) have been seeking and making a lot of money in the various massive lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies, leading to a bizarre mixture of true and false allegations against the companies, and misuse of funds obtained.
Pettersen says doctors who prescribe drugs need more education on addiction. I agree. But what sort of education on addiction? She doesn’t say. The anti-opioid hardliners who have been extremely influential for the last 10 years often believe ludicrous things, like equating addiction with physical dependence (a mistake prevalent in the anti-opioid-company lawsuits), or they deny the existence of pseudoaddiction. For a pretty decisive case that pseudoaddiction is real, see Scott Alexander's "Against Against Pseudoaddiction."
Pettersen correctly points to lack of adequate access to addiction treatment. But she doesn’t mention the prevalence of pseudoscience and abuse in addiction treatment. Getting more people into pseudoscientific and abusive rehab would do no good—it needs to be good treatment.
More facts she never mentions: Opioid prescriptions have been cut in HALF over the last 10 years. And yet (1) prescription-opioid-involved deaths (which always mostly involved other drugs too—mixtures, not just one opioid, and largely among non-patients) have flattened out, and more importantly (2) total opioid overdoses have skyrocketed to absolutely unprecedented heights. Opioid prescription reduction most likely caused this problem in the first place. And she wants to do MORE of it.
Toward the end, Pettersen and the host pat her on the back for how sane and bipartisan she is. They’re drinking the Kool-Aid. This is just more prohibitionist ideology, in its modern watered-down more politically-correct form. They do not defend drug prohibition with evidence or arguments. They rig the whole framing of the issue, to put serious questioning off the table, so it doesn’t even occur to anyone that something different and better is possible. It’s vile bullshit, don’t be fooled.

hi there everyone — my name’s shannon, and i’m gonna be this rp’s resident british disaster lesbian !  i’m excited to get things running with you all, so here’s a little bit about my precious bean cecilia. if you wanna plot just like this and i’ll get around to you !
BASICS —
birth name: liesel cordelia meier-lancaster
current name: cecilia victoire-jane lancaster
nicknames: cee, lia, celia
gender: cis female
birthdate: 18th february, 1997 — munich, germany
age: twenty-three
nationality: british-german (dual)
orientations: bisexual / biromantic (strongly leaning toward women)
mbti: esfp-t
hogwarts house: ravenclaw
zodiac: aquarius-pisces cusp
fc: josefine frida pettersen
BRIEF BIO — tw alcohol, drugs
cecilia lancaster is less of a singular being than an amalgamation of people she’s magpied things from — all of the books she’s read, the films she’s seen, anything she could take to get away from the genuine mess that was her true life. born liesel meier-lancaster, her british-german parents went through a messy divorce when she was very young, and she was left living with her german media mogul father while her elder brother returned to london with their mother.
while she was never left materially wanting due to her father’s money, emotionally was... another story; he was always working, one of the many reasons her mother left him, and he often had office-flings around the house with whom she can remember a great many... unfortunate run-ins. none of them stayed long, no stable parental dynamic manifested, but what was consistent was the steady flood of gifts that often consisted of books and such like to stimulate her language-learning and education.
she would visit her mother in london over the summers, a trade-off with her brothers, and with her she would see everything — museums, aquariums — as she was free, of course, to do in germany with the staff her father hired to ‘look after her.’ but the difference was that she and her mother engaged in such activity together, which never occurred in munich. so she lost herself in whatever she could to escape the growing lack of order in her household, a trend that would keep going throughout her childhood and was supported by the inattentive father giving his daughter whatever she desired that would keep her away from the doors of his office.
and particularly, she attached herself to a character who seemed to feel the same yearning desire to be needed as she did. the same hopeless restlessness as she did — cecilia tallis from ian mcewan’s ‘atonement.’ and there were others, too, other characters more carefree, but the sad ending of mcewan’s lovers’ tale inspired the young girl to begin writing herself. because the protagonist, briony — however lying and loathsome — taught her one thing: that you could change anything with words. and if the words were clever enough, you could help others to escape, too.
however — unlike the more refined cecilia tallis — she was also pulled into the party circles of the rich. the drugs, the drink, the late nights and ending up on the train tracks with no idea how she got there. and the states she got into, when she got them just right, were the most deliciously inspiring. that form of self-punishment ( for the consequences would catch up to you ) too good to calm down. unsurprisingly, mikael meier did not notice. or maybe he didn’t care. she never wants to know which.
so, when she finally decided at the age of twenty-one to leave germany, she picked up cecilia as a name. changed it legally, and started only telling people her mother’s last name so she could detach herself from her father’s lesser role in her childhood despite his lesser distance compared to the oceans between her and her mother. and she’s still got access to the family bank, so it’s not a loss, is it ?
