Do you think if Beth actually got pregnant from rio she would’ve kept the baby? In a canon context but without the factor of her being pregnant being the reason rio isn’t killing her. If that makes sense

Hi Anon! I keep meaning to answer this with a link to the fic I’ve had in progress for like a month, and it’s wishful thinking that I can have it done any time soon. I might post ch 1 tomorrow just to get the idea of it out.

I do think if Rio accidentally got Beth pregnant she would keep the baby. Not without a lot of conflict and heartache, but I think Beth’s moral compass is different when it comes to her offspring. I would imagine she’d have a lot of trouble going through with an abortion. Mostly because of what her fertility and pregnancies and motherhood has been throughout canon and how I view her as a mother. She has continued to procreate with Dean despite her own personal unhappiness, and seems to really define herself by her ability to sacrifice for her children. It probably all goes back to her fear of abandonment and having to be parentified at such a young age. She has an unhealthy fixation on her role as a mother and that would extend to a baby she conceived by Rio.

I think her process would be the normal stages of grief. She would deny and project her anger onto Rio. Blame him, push him, take her anger and fear out on him. She would bargain and try to terminate the pregnancy, wouldn’t be able to go through with it and would just hope she would miscarry naturally. When a natural miscarriage didn’t happen, she would probably feel very hopeless. She likely wouldn’t care for this pregnancy as enthusiastically as her others. Like for example, she would skip the recommended genetic screenings and ignore her own body as it inevitably struggles against a progressing pregnancy. Ultimately, she would accept that she’s keeping this baby. Not happily – and I think she would feel a lot of guilt about this. She would try to assuage this guilt through projection onto Rio. She’d pick fights, try to hurt him, not allow him access to the baby after it’s born…

Soooo, that’s basically the plot of the fic I’m working on. 😅 Maybe I shouldn’t have just summarized it all and made it a ✨mystery✨ so it’s more fun to read. But I think this is fine. The fic is all Rio POV and the paragraph above may give a much-needed glimpse into Beth’s perspective that may not be fully clear as Rio experiences this pregnancy with her.

For a minute, it’s hard to see the source of the blood, rivulets running down the thin lines of his abs, pooling in the hollow of his belly button. It smears red across too much of him, and Beth has to lean in a little closer until the metallic scent of blood hits her nostrils and it’s all she can smell. She curls her hair behind her ears, traces her gaze until she finds the wound that’s still weeping. A round little puncture about the size of a watch face, a newborn’s yawning mouth, a golden dollar, in the normally honeyed skin at the edge of his left hip.

Beth exhales, and she’s close enough it hits his side, if the shiver that runs through him is any indication, and she shifts back onto the couch as she looks back up at him. -

A blackout rolls over the city and Rio shows up at Beth's in need of a little care. Set post-s4.

Story Summary: Beth goes to Rio at the bar and flirts with him to get a cut of the money laundering profits again after he steals all her furniture and cuts her out of his business.

She tells him that she will do anything to get back on his good side. He takes her up on that offer and asks her to come home with him.

She becomes pregnant after their encounter and Beth decides to hide the pregnancy from Rio. She can get away with her deception for several months until Rio shows up at her house and makes her strip down to look for a wire.

Beth and Rio’s partnership is put to the test after the truth is revealed.

Chapter summary: Beth gets home from Canada with Rio and confronts Dean about their marriage and filing the divorce paperwork. They discuss the next big obstacle to them being free to being together.

How would you feel if Beth was claiming the baby to be Rio’s ? The only reason I believe that they are trying to make Rio seem like the father is because Beth says she only has three or four months and that would kinda make sense if the fake baby was conceived during 2.09.

Ok, so here’s what I’m basically certain happened. 

The writers wanted viewers to come away with exactly what a lot of people did – that Rio believes this baby to be his. But they were stuck with a problem they’d written themselves into: time. Rio was shot three times, one of which went into his lung. It would’ve taken a long time to recover fully, as it’s very clear he has. So they had to have a time jump. 

Beth mentions in episode 1 that she hasn’t paid her mortgage in 4 months. This is tight imo (for Rio’s full recovery), but becomes even more so if you really try and stretch it – conceivably (heh) the last time they were making enough bank for her to pay her mortgage was the beginning of 208. So the four months could’ve been since then or since the finale. We don’t know. 

But, either way, Beth has to be a minimum of four months along. They also know Rio is a very smart man who would demand to literally see evidence. Meaning there would have to be a forming human on that screen. So, as a writer, now what?

Well, now you realise that the majority of people still watching this show avidly remember Beth and Rio having sex. So you don’t have to have Beth say “I’m pregnant and it’s yours” even though anyone in that situation would, because viewers will assume it for themselves. So this solves your time problem because people will come away with a certain idea, even though that’s not what the plot can allow based on the timeline. 

You’ll notice that the Previously On includes Beth shooting Rio, but not them sleeping together (I could be wrong, but I don’t think any of the S3 ones have had them sleeping together – so if you’re a new viewer to the show, you would never guess that this pregnancy is related to Rio).

Beth saying that she has three or four months is actually what makes me certain that this fake baby can’t be his, because four months have already passed. What she’s saying is that she has four months till there would be very concrete, visible evidence of whether there’s a baby in her womb or not. 

As for how I’d feel…

I think the only good thing that could come from this storyline is a realisation on Beth’s part about these things – how she’d feel to have another child, how she’d feel having another of Dean’s children and how she’d feel being pregnant with Rio’s baby. If Jenna Bans were my boss and this storyline got dumped into my lap, that’s where I’d take it to make it useful. This show has a very weird way of dealing with plot, in that none of it ever really amounts to anything. No one learns anything or changes (which is why I was so excited for Annie, but…), so I would treat this as a real turning point on how she views her life, herself, Dean, and her feelings for Rio. 

However, that’s not what they’re going to do because Beth has an astounding lack of an inner life, which is what all this would require. But that’s a story for a different day, because this has become far too long already 😂 Thank you for the question!
