Set somewhere around season 4, a canon divergent series of events lead to an unplanned, unwanted Brio pregnancy. The timeline oscillates between: Present-day, when Brio navigate a difficult night with their infant daughter as they’re forced to face their strained relationship… And a look-back over the course of a year spent going from casual lovers and business partners, to unwilling coparents.

Told in Rio POV, the idea was to capture some of his season 4 angst and anger while he tries to understand his new complicated situation.

what if all rio is trying to do is tell agatha that it hurt her too. what is rio is desperate to share this sadness with the only other person who could understand. what if rio is angry, FUMING at agatha for being so selfish in thinking that rio could never feel remorse. that agatha just abandoned her for years, potentially centuries, convinced that she was the only one to be upset, to have had her entire world turned upside down.

agatha is a selfish person and the road is testing her ability to be selfless. what if her biggest test is accepting that someone else could share that pain with her. that she never had to make rio a villain in her mind, and she never had to become one herself.

they will have their fight, they will get ugly, but at the crux of it all, when they both take a second the breathe, rio whispers “he was my son too” through her rage. maybe it is a scream. maybe a cry.

by blaming rio, and running from rio, agatha took away rio’s right to mourn; to be a mother to that child. rio will have to spend the rest of eternity thinking of it unless she acts now. she needs to resolve the only thing in her existence that has ever made her feel alive, so she can truly experience the one thing she never thought she was able to: death.

So, I have watched Agatha All Along and fallen down the rabbit hole.

One thing that struck me on a re-watch that I haven't really seen discussed much is that moment when Evanora says she ought to have killed Agatha when she was born and the camera cuts to Rio and you get this:

Yeah, Rio is upset because she knows how much that will hurt Agatha, but in the wider context, it's hurting her, because she almost took Nicholas the moment that he was born. All of that guilt and grief comes back to her, and when you consider that she just might be Nicky's other mother, it stings even more.

Because she hates that she and Evanora have that in common, and she's reminded again why Agatha can never forgive her.

Agatha and Rio’s First Times

The first time they met, Agatha had just killed a young witch. It was an accident but her mother didn’t believe her. Evanora never believed her. She sat in the forest where the girl had died, not wanting her to be alone. That’s when she saw her. A figure shrouded in black emerging from the depths of the forest. She didn’t say anything as she lifted the teen into her arms, winked at Agatha and retreated back into the darkness.

The first time she spoke to her, was when she had killed yet another witch under her tutelage. She was trying to teach her defensive spells when she had sucked all of the magic out of the young girls body. It’s happening again, she thinks. She sits with the body once again, waiting for Death to claim her. She had deduced who the mysterious figure was, as she only saw her when someone has died. She comes to collect. She sees her again, having appeared at the edge of the wood. She speaks this time, “You have a knack for this.”

“I don’t mean to,” Agatha says, sniffling.

“You will learn,” she says as she lifts yet another body into her arms and strides toward the wood. she turns back to Agatha, “Te veo,” she says before disappearing into the darkness.

The next time she sees her is not her fault. She’s sitting at the bank of a river deep in the forest when she feels her. Her veins thrum heavily when she’s near. Agatha doesn’t understand it, but she welcomes it. “Agatha,” she says, her voice even.

“I didn’t call you here.” Agatha says, turning her head. She wasn’t wearing her black shroud, instead dressed in green.

“I know. Thought you needed a friend.” Death says.

Agatha smiles a sad smile. Her mother had called her evil again. She doesn’t even know what she did to warrant it. So she left their house. They sat in silence for a while before she spoke, “Rio.”

Agatha looked at her confused, “What?”

“My name is Rio.”

Agatha looks at her and smiles. The first time she made a friend.

She returns to the riverbank often, always found by Rio. It’s here that they share their secrets, their stories, their first kiss, their first time.

Her mother makes comments about how she’s been seduced by the darkness, by pure evil. Her blood doesn’t come and Evanora looks at her, full of disgust. She knows. It’s then she realizes that they’ve never been alone at the riverbank. She does as she’s told and lets her mother perform the ritual. She doesn’t feel it anymore. She sees Rio again that night, this time in her bedroom. She’s shrouded in black again. Agatha knows why she’s here. She lays back in her bed and watches as Rio sits on the edge. “What did you do?” she asks quietly.

Agatha inhales deeply before speaking, “I obeyed.” She pulls the covering aside as Rio turns to face her.

“You know why I’m here.”

“I do.” she says as Rio reaches to touch her belly. She can feel it when it happens. It doesn’t make it hurt any less.

Rio turns away, standing to leave, when Agatha speaks. “Don’t hide. Not from me.”

Rio sniffs and turns back to Agatha. There are tears in her eyes. She never thought she would see Death cry, but this was only the first time.
