Reborn as the Enemy Prince Official Character Profile and Author Q&A

With the release of the manhwa adaptation of "How to Live as the Enemy Prince" (or its official English title "Reborn as the Enemy Prince") this month, I've decided to loosely translate the character profile and Q&A the author released when she was still alive back in 2020.

And probably because lots of people are in disbelief that the 2nd prince's name is "Plants" and not "Plantz" or "Planche." 😂 Sorry, everyone. The author included an English translation of the character names in her character profile, so Manta's English translation of Plants's name is correct.

One more interesting trivia before we begin. The Korean title is 적국의 왕자로 사는 법, which roughly translates to "How to Live as the Prince of an Enemy Country." Its abbreviated by Korean readers as 적왕사, which interestingly translates into "The Red King." Probably a foreshadowing of Kalian's future. But I'll use the abbreviation REP from the official English title to avoid confusion.

Q: I loved the fact that the setting book(?) provided information about modern perfumes suitable for our princes! Is there a modern perfume that would suit the female characters (Dmirea, Hina, Arianne, ***) from REP?

A: Because I’m completely clueless to this TT_TT, my thoughts may be very different from the readers’ thoughts. First of all, let me tell you what comes to mind… :)

A: I laughed for a moment while stuttering. Ugh lol

In the text, when Syspanian takes the shape of a black butterfly, it is often described as 'like a lump of light from the night sky'. What Syspanian take is not a real butterfly with antennae, a tube, six thin legs, or a soft body, but the shape of a butterfly made of light. When it flies, black light scatters, but the wings do not drip. Therefore, there are no antennae~

The shape of the wings seems to be similar to that of a swallow butterfly. I think you can think of black swallowtail butterflies and mountain swallowtail butterflies. :)

Q:Based on Bern, who appeared in episode 421 (+episode 392~), how tall is he?

A: Since age in the story is based on birthday, Kalian is actually in his late teens. Although the exact age was not given, the appearance of Bern, which Kalian assumed at the time of disguise, was older than Kalian (18 years old in Korean standards) and younger than Kyrie (21 years old in Korean standards). It's almost the end of the growing season~

There is alcohol but no cigarettes. Even though the main characters are adults in the story, they are still teenagers, so it may be difficult to accept them emotionally. lol

Q: If Sillike used Reunieri perfume, I ask because it seems like perfume existed in that era as well. Do princes use perfume? If you were to compare it to modern perfume, I wonder what perfume would be suitable for the princes!

A: There are perfumes that combine scents such as flowers or fruits. From a worldview, it is not used to mask bad odors like perfume that was used in the Middle Ages, but rather to create a 'scent' like in modern times.

It's a modern perfume... I actually don't know much about men's perfume brands and I don't even know what perfumes are coming out these days, haha. But if I write down what comes to mind, it's as follows. :)

Q:Related to princess status

Q: If you compare the characters to animals

Q: Do the new tangerines have to be from Secretia? Do the princes eat the tangerines by peeling them off? Do they cut the tangerines into pieces when peeling them? Do they eat one piece at a time or in two or three portions? How many tangerines does Chase eat a day? Sweet tangerines. I might not like it that much... I might like eating grilled tangerines..

A: Tangerines are also grown in Cyries. However, Kalian liked it a little more because it had the meaning of “Mount Secretia.” Tangerines are also grown in the southern region of Cyries. (The tangerines in the honey tea that Ian gave Kalian were from Cyries acid. Haha)

Kalian just eats it without removing it. Peel the skin into pieces starting from the top. Because I like tangerines that are not fully ripe, it is difficult to peel them into petals at once. :) Also, the small tangerines are split into two bites, and the large tangerines are split into four pieces. I put a lot in my mouth and gobble it up.��Very small tangerines can be eaten in one bite.

I love everybody but if I have to choose:

1. The Duck Avenger: he's the love of my life and I will adore him always. He's the real hero and in this saga he goes through a journey (physically and mentally) that is beyond Disney standards, that changes him and makes him better after every issue

2. One/Odin: when I first saw him, it was love at first glance because he's the smartest, the funniest and the most stylish. He might be just an A.I./Droid but he has such a gorgeous development and such an amazing friendship with Pk that leaves me speechless

3. Xadhoom: she is the woman of this serie. Badass, sassy and the only one with a complete character development (one of the best character development in history, btw), I fell for Xadhoom when I saw the cover of the 0/3 Issue

4. The Raider: I rediscovered him rereading Pkna for the 19192 time, and I have to say that he's really cool! Plus his background story melts me every time (The day that will come has a particular space in my heart)

5. Mary-Ann Flagstarr: Despite not appearing too much in the serie, she's one of those characters that you can't help but love. She's reliable, trustworthy and a good friend of the Duck Avenger... I mean, what else do you ask for?

Odin Eidolon. He’s intelligent, mysterious and a powerful public figure, how could I not like him? He’s exactly the type of character I always admired. Plus, he makes a great team with Paperinik in the 23rd century!

Ambiuolcios-Imbolc

C’est une fête des lumières en rapport aux premiers rayons de soleil qui annoncent les premiers frémissements du printemps. C’est également un rite de purification (Le nom même de la fête signifie « lustration ») et de fécondité qui préfigure Belotennia et qui se déroule à une date la plus proche possible du 2 février. C’est le moment où la vie reprend dans la nature, les rivières gonflées d’eau par les pluies et la fonte des neiges balaient les scories de l’hiver. C’est également l’apparition des perce-neige, la naissance des agneaux et des chevreaux, le début de la lactation des femelles. La graine se prépare à donner naissance à la future plante. L’herbe qui reverdit annonce que la vie n’était qu’en gestation dans le ventre nourricier de la Terre.

Parallèlement, à cette période de l’année, les familles et les clans n’avaient que très peu d’activités extérieures, et la vie se déroulait principalement au sein des foyers qui étaient gérés par les femmes.

C’est donc une fête essentiellement féminine, maternelle, lunaire. Elle est associée à l’eau et à la lumière renaissante et a lieu la nuit et ce sont les femmes qui officient.

Cette fête, célébration de la Déesse-Mère, est placée sous la bienveillance de Brigit/Brigantia ( 1 Du gaulois : brigantion / brigant- (éminent, élevé), du sanskrit: brhati (haute, noble), du vieux Breton: briantin (personne de rang élevée). Terme celtique pour évoquer ce qui est éminent, élevé. Très fréquent dans les noms d’oppida situés sur des hauteurs, Brigantium (Briançon, Briençon, Briant, Briantes, etc…), dans le nom de certains peuples (Brigantes, Brigantii, …) et de rivières (Brian, Briance, Briande, etc…), qui est à la fois, Mère, Soeur et Fille des Dieux, fille du Dagda. Elle est aussi la mère, l’épouse et la soeur de Lug, Dagda, Ogme, Nuada, Diancecht et Mac Oc, des Dieux des Tuatha Dé Danann, et fut l’épouse d’un Fomoire, Bres, avec qui elle eut un fils, Ruadán.

Elle est connue sous différents noms et est capable de se transformer sous toutes les formes qu’elle souhaite. Elle est symbolisée par le feu, celui de l’inspiration pour les poètes, le feu de la Terre qui permet la santé et la fertilité, le feu du foyer qui est utilisé pour la forge. Elle est donc la Déesse-Mère des Art, de la Médecine, de la Magie et de la Guerre, elle est la patronne des Druides, des Bardes, des Vates et des forgerons, et elle est invoquée lors des naissances. Elle participe donc des trois fonctions traditionnelles celtiques.

La fête est le pendant, symétrique, de Lugunaissatis (car c’est une constante des fêtes d’avoir chacune leur opposé symétrique, leur vis à vis qui vient l’équilibrer six mois plus tard), quand la Terre, fatiguée par les moissons, était redevenue vierge. Pour Ambiuolcios, la Déesse, tout comme la Terre, sont toujours vierges mais l’une comme l’autre sont redevenues fécondables: la Déesse vierge est alors la préfiguration de la Déesse Mère. A ce titre elle est aussi la Déesse de fécondité, et donc associée à la Nature, au moment de sa correspondance avec le cycle saisonnier et agraire. C’est le début du Printemps.

Ambiuolcios semble pourtant être un peu la fête mal aimée du festiaire celto-druidique, celle sur laquelle on trouve le moins de témoignages, de survivances ou de pages d’étude consacrées. On la sous-estime un peu dans la mesure où l’on ne retrouve pas beaucoup de traces et que l’on ne sait pas grand-chose à son sujet si ce n’est que les chrétiens l’ont récupérée, selon leur habitude, et consacrée à Ste Brigitte. On a souvent estimé du coup qu’elle n’était peut-être pas très importante ou/et qu’elle n’était destinée qu’à la 3ème fonction, celle des producteurs.

Certains auteurs avancent pourtant une théorie plus séduisante : les autres fêtes celto-druidiques sont essentiellement connues grâce aux copistes chrétiens qui n’en ont pourtant laissé transparaitre que ce qu’ils voulaient bien faire transparaitre. Si l’on ne sait presque rien sur Ambiuolcios, ne serait-ce pas parce que c’était une fête ésotérique si importante, ou une fête principalement féminine que les chrétiens se seraient efforcés d’en supprimer tout souvenir ?

Le rite le plus représentatif de la fête est la purification: « se laver les pieds, les mains, la tête ».

On admet généralement qu’Ambiuolcios est une fête lustrale destinée à la purification après les rigueurs et les souillures de l’hiver. Mais la fête correspond aussi symboliquement à l’éveil initiatique et à la préparation qui aboutiront à la Renaissance de Beltaine. C’est une fête initiatique d’un passage primordial.

On sait que la tenue de chaque rituel nécessite une purification préalable. On comprend donc que cette purification est d’autant plus nécessaire quand il s’agit d’un véritable rituel initiatique. Et à cette occasion précise, la purification devient le rite lui-même.

La purification se fait de deux manières:

• par l’Eau (et l’on précise bien ici, « se laver les pieds, les mains, la tête »),

• par le Feu: Ambiuolcios est une fête ou le feu joue un rôle primordial puisqu’il symbolise le Soleil, source de chaleur et de lumière. Outre son rôle purificateur il est aussi le protecteur des hommes et des animaux (la fête est d’ailleurs aussi connue sous le nom de « fête des chandelles » et ces chandelles, parfois des flambeaux, sont restés dans certaines coutumes: processions, …)

Dans la nature, Ambiuolcios correspond à la première assimilation de la graine semée qui s’intègre au sol. Le germe de blé est donc la promesse du champ qui s’épanouira sous le soleil de Lugunaissatis.

Si les jours rallongent, on remarque pourtant que l’hiver exerce toujours son emprise sur la terre. Néanmoins les graines qui dormaient jusque-là en son sein, commencent à s’éveiller à une vie nouvelle: c’est du plus profond des ténèbres que nait la lumière, comme c’est de la mort que nait la vie.

C’est donc une fête d’ouverture de la vie, déjà contenue dans le sein de la Terre et c’est le retour du soleil qui permettra à ces graines de donner en été les fruits et les récoltes espérés.

D’ailleurs, c’est autour de ce thème que tournent toutes les coutumes relatives à la crêpe qu’on a pu conserver: lancer la 1ère crêpe avec une pièce d’argent dans l’autre main, lancer cette 1ère crêpe sur le haut de l’armoire et l’y garder toute l’année, etc…

Il faut dire aussi que la crêpe avait un effet pour ainsi dire multiplicateur: confectionnée avec de la farine, des oeufs, du lait, c’était l’espérance d’avoir de ces produits en abondance toute l’année. Enfin, souvent, autrefois, les paysans invitaient leurs voisins à venir manger des crêpes pour avoir une belle moisson ou pour préserver les blés de la maladie. « Goûter de chaque nourriture selon l’ordre, voilà ce que l’on doit faire à Ambiuolcios. Four years ago, I began directing the Beat Poets reading series in Idyllwild and would occasionally invite guest poets. On July 16, Brendan Constantine joined us for our Beat Night Special at Middle Ridge Winery. This was the second time he has joined us, and it was another characteristic performance of blazing intelligence and animated delivery. It was Brendan’s first gig since the pandemic began, during that small window of opportunity when we could actually meet, maskless and without danger, inside the winery’s vaulted ceilings and immense space.

Constantine has received support and commissions from many prestigious organizations, including MOCA, the Getty Museum, James Irvine Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with appearances on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” TED ED and numerous podcasts. His work has appeared in many top-tier literary journals. His most recent collection is “Dementia, My Darling” (2016). He currently teaches creative writing at the Windward School. In addition, he brings poetry workshops to veterans, hospitals, foster care centers and shelters for the homeless. He is working with the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project and with speech pathologist Michael Biel to develop the first poetry workshop for people dealing with aphasia. Every summer, Constantine teaches a poetry workshop for the Idyllwild Arts Summer Poetry Program, so the timing was ripe to catch him for our reading series.

Constantine captivated our large, eclectic audience of writers, artists, actors, musicians and photographers with his zany, innovative work, hilarious wit and mercurial performance. The audience went wild –– laughing, cheering, applauding and ultimately reflecting on the deeper nuances of his work. Brendan bears the mark of a great poet. He may just be possessed of genius.

Here’s my interview with him.

Q: Am I correct that you went to the Idyllwild School of Music and Arts Summer Program when you were a teenager and that was when you lived here and began to love Idyllwild?

Constantine: I didn’t attend ISOMATA. I went to the now defunct Desert Sun School, which later became Elliot Pope. My family started bringing me to Idyllwild for vacations in the middle 70’s and I was so struck that when it came time for high school (1982), I applied to DSS. Idyllwild has never let go of my heart. It is where I spent so many formative years, you know?

Q: How long have you been teaching poetry workshops at the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program?

Constantine: I began working with Idyllwild Arts in 2000, supporting the first iterations of Writers Week.

Q: Do you have more than five books? Do you have a new poetry book coming out soon?

Constantine: I have four full-length collections, a fifth on the way, and seven additional “chapbooks” of poetry. The new book has some real interest, but I haven’t settled on a publisher yet.

Q: Can you tell us about your new book?

Constantine: The new book is called “The Opposites Game.” It’s titled after a poem, the premise of which is kind of an organizing principle for the whole manuscript. Throughout, the reader is offered a reverse perspective of the world, daily life experienced in a new order, the sun and moon trade jobs. I hope people will enjoy it. I’ve tried to hit all the notes.

Q: Were Anne Waldman and Laurie Anderson influences in your presentations, since both use theatrical word performances?

Constantine: Laurie Anderson and Anne Waldman were very much influences on my work. They’re pretty wonderful artists and demonstrated for me that you could perform your work without being ham-handed. Without ACTING it, as it were. That if you just modulated your voice the way you would if you were talking to people in person, (perhaps people you were meeting for the first time) that you could connect with an audience on a higher level.

Q: Have you ever met them?

Constantine: I’ve met Anne Waldman and she was charming. Very receptive.

Q: What other poets influenced you?

Constantine: I’d have to say an idol of mine, who I also met and even shared a podium with was Brigit Pegeen Kelly. As far as I’m concerned, she was the greatest poet of my lifetime. I still miss her.

Q: Have you performed in New York?

Constantine: I have performed in New York quite a bit: at the Players Club, the New School, KGB Bar, Cornelia Street Cafe, the Bowery Poetry Club, the National Arts Club and Poets House, among others.

Q: Have you read in Europe?

Constantine: I have read throughout Europe — Paris, Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, Amsterdam, England, Ireland, also Greece and the Mediterranean.

We are fortunate that in July 2022, he will be back in Idyllwild, offering a two-hour, power-packed poetry workshop at Middle Ridge Winery in Idyllwild. There will be a culminating public reading for workshop participants later in the week. Brendan promises his workshop students one, new, finished poem and a number more in the works. Trump will award the Medal of Freedom to Devin Nunes and Jim Jordon, two of the brownest noses in D C. 

Evening.  The Georgia Senatorial runoff votes begin to trickle in.  We can only keep our fingers crossed. 

Note: Not meaning to, I get hooked on “The Maltese Falcon.”  Small things: The way Spade rolls a cigarette; they come out perfect every time.  His use of the word “gunsel” in referring to Wilmer, played by Elisha Cook, Jr., who so reminds us of William H Macy.  Spade’s reference to the Falcon as the “dingus.”  And...my memory of the plaque (I tracked it down) in San Francisco showing where Miles Archer was murdered by Brigit O’Shaughnessy. 

More votes...it appears that Warnock has the edge over Loeffler...and that Ossoff is edging out Perdue.  Interesting.  There will be a lot of talk about voter fraud.

News of MAGA people clashing with police in D C.  Huge crowd. 

Warnock and Ossoff seem to be the winners.  Fingers crossed...

Trump has spoken to Pence, we hear, telling him not to accept the results of the Electoral College.  Poor Pence. 

We learn that Trump is soon to give a speech.  His  people wait in the cold.  Noonish, in overcoat and gloves, Trump gives what is perhaps the craziest speech yet.  He goes on and on.  This insanity is called a Save America rally.  Wow.  He begins yammering.  Voter fraud in Georgia...who governor has betrayed the Party.  The press is the “enemy of the people”...etc.  The resolve to never give up, never concede...etc.  Keep fighting.

Meanwhile, at the Capitol Building...at 1:00 p m they start opening the envelopes.  Right away a spanner is thrown in the works...no surprise...they are going alphabetically...when they get to Arizona everything stops...Trump has asked a couple of his sycophants to throw out the votes that went to Biden.    The room has to be vacated and the matter discussed. 

But...there is trouble brewing...when Trump concluded his speech he said he was going to lead his people (from the area called the Ellipse[?] to the Capitol Building.  No way this was going to happen. Can’t imagine his leading anybody anywhere.   But the immense crowd wends it way there.  Perhaps thinking they are doing Trump’s biding they go past the barricades, past the police (why so few?) and into the building.  Mayhem.  The smashing of windows...my God, what a bunch...Q Anon insignias...Confederate flags...”Don’t Tread on Me” flags...there is a shot of a T-shirt bearing the words “Camp Auschwitz”...are these people armed?  Chaos...they occupy the building...there are photos of a man sitting in Nancy Pelosi’s office, at her desk...(but won’t this make him easily identifiable?)..using some of the equipment (scaffolding and such) set up for the upcoming inauguration one of the more nimble of their number attempts to fly a Trump flag from atop of the building...one man has a collection of zip ties...we see a noose...(what are they going to attempt?)...The chaos goes on for quite a while and one wonders why Trump doesn’t appear and try to calm them (fat chance; he is too cowardly) but he stays well out of the way. Like me, he is, we guess, watching the whole thing on TV.   He (much) later sends a message, expressing admiration for them, saying again that the election was stolen but urging them to go home.  

After an interlude the reading of the state votes resumes, you might say, as if nothing happened.  Pence presiding, after being hidden for his own protection, unable to change the result (as ordered to by the boss)...so...no coup today.

Fringe Furniture: the products that help us understand who we are

Every product is a blabbermouth; it has a tendency to answer every question – and then some – Del Coates.

Coates, an American industrial designer and design academic, is right. The processes and outputs of design – or put another way, material culture – reflect our cultural values. The idea of “reading” a product is not novel, of course. And we don’t need to wait until a product has built up a history to analyse what it says about the values of the culture that made it.

In fact, it’s possible to know what a product says about a culture right now if we embrace art historian Ester Pasztory’s idea that everything is a cognitive aid with which a group thinks through and articulates its social, political, ideological or economic values.

Fringe Furniture is an annual fixture on the Melbourne Fringe Festival program, and has been going for 29 years. This year’s theme, Living Traces, speaks to this idea that products can help us understand who we are.

It implies that among designers, makers and larger society, the processes and outputs of design are a current interchange of projection and reflection. In reviewing this year’s exhibition, I was interested to discover what cultural values were held among the collection of furniture, lighting and interior accessories created by this group of designers.

Two values stood out: transparency and maintaining a balance. So let’s look at those.

Transparency

The products reflecting this value were softly spoken, humble products: lights, lounges and chairs with nothing to hide. The idea of transparency as a value was articulated through products that exposed or made features of fastenings, joins or assemblies.

In some, materials were left as they were or only ever so lightly varnished. These designers, who are mostly locals, ensured their designs were honest, authentic and unambiguous. My top three that best articulate this value are pictured below. The first, Max Harper’s Corker pendant lights, won the Sustainable and Waste-wise Design Award, sponsored by the Banyule City Council. Jonathan Ho’s Yi chair won the Most Market Ready Design Award, sponsored by TAIT.

Maintaining a balance between people and the environment

The designers at this year’s exhibition have used materials that either derive from the environment – clays, twigs, leaves – or materials that can negatively affect the environment if they become part of it.

The delicacy of the designs reflecting this value is striking. The designers manage to articulate a great fragility within their products – partly due to the materials they have used, and partly due to the forms themselves – and yet it’s obvious that people have not been absent from the processes needed to make the work possible.

Como a Deusa Grega Melissa, Mari é uma mulher transformada em abelha. Sua dádiva – o mel – era acolhida entre os diversos povos indígenas como um iguaria muito especial. Muitas tribos festejam a “Festa do Mel”, comemoração da coletividade, com festas e danças.

Mari é também uma Deusa de sacrifício, uma vez que morre para alimentar o filho. Neste sentido, assemelha-se à Deusa esquimó Sedna, que , ao perder seus dedos, gerou os mamíferos marinhos que alimentam seu povo.

Mari recebeu da ave chamada papa-mel a dádiva do mel e o deu a seu filho Kuyuparé, o Trovão. O menino comeu tudo e pediu mais. Mari pediu que o marido fosse buscar, e ele alegou estar ocupado. Ela insistiu, ele irritou-se, e foram os dois. Encontraram a Casa da Abelha, e ele obrigou Mari a tirar o mel. Ela enfiou a mão no buraco da árvore e destroncou o braço, ficando presa. Ela morreu e virou a abelha que hoje traz ao povo Ikpeng a dádiva do mel.

Quem são os Ikpeng

Eles são uma tribo indígena relatada no início do século XX, quando viviam em estado de guerra com seus vizinhos alto-xinguanos. Porém, após o descobrimento dessa tribo, contato com o mundo não-indígena foi até que recente e ocorreu no início da década de 60, tendo conseqüências desastrosas para a tribo, que foi reduzida em menos da metade em razão de doenças e morte por armas de fogo. Foram então transferidos para os limites do Parque Indígena do Xingu e “pacificados”.

Deusas abelhas em outras mitologias

Em vários países do mediterrâneo foram encontrados vestígios de antigos cultos (3000 a.C.) de uma Deusa das Abelhas, mas sem que sua exata identidade fosse conhecida. Gravações em tábuas votivas representam a Deusa como uma abelha, com cabelos trançados como serpentes e com um bico de pomba, combinando assim traços característicos de Atena, Ártemis, Afrodite e Medusa. Desenhos nas paredes do palácio de Knossos corroboram para comprovar a existência de uma Deusa das abelhas na antiga Creta.

A Deusa cultuada na Anatólia (Ásia menor, 3500-1750 a.C.) era representada usando uma tiara em forma de colméia; o mel era considerado sagrado e usado para embalsamar os mortos enterrados em posição fetal. Vários mitos descrevem a restauração da vida após a morte com o auxílio do bálsamo de mel da Deusa. Deméter era chamada de Mãe Abelha e no seu festival Thesmophoria, reservado apenas às mulheres com oferendas que eram constituídas de pães de mel e gergelim em forma de órgãos sexuais femininos.

Um dos símbolo de Afrodite era um favo de ouro e Suas sacerdotisas eram chamadas Melissas, assim como também as que serviam nos templos de Deméter, Ártemis, Rhea e Cibele, nos cultos da Grécia, Roma e Ásia menor. Essas sacerdotisas exerciam funções oraculares, se alimentavam apenas com pólen e mel e recebiam o dom de falar a verdade da Deusa Abelha, que a sussurrava nos seus ouvidos.

As abelhas eram consagradas à Deusa desde a antiga civilização matrifocal de Çatal Huyuk (Anatólia) e aparecem nos mitos gregos como “pássaros das Musas”, atraídos pelo aroma das flores do qual preparavam o mel, considerado um néctar divino. Acreditava-se que as abelhas eram almas das sacerdotisas que serviram às deusas Afrodite e Deméter, acompanhando a passagem das outras almas entre os mundos.

O nome científico da classe das abelhas – Hymenoptera – que significa “asas de véu” refere-se ao hymen, o véu que ocultava o altar interno nos templos da Deusa, assim como sua contraparte no corpo feminino. A defloração era um ato sagrado realizado com a bênção da Deusa no seu aspecto de Hymen, a padroeira da noite de núpcias e da lua de mel, que tinha a duração de um ciclo lunar e menstrual.

A combinação de sangue menstrual com mel era considerada antigamente o elixir sagrado da vida, o néctar criado por Afrodite e ingerido pelos seus sacerdotes e adeptos.

Na cosmologia nórdica o néctar de inspiração, sabedoria, magia e vida eterna era uma combinação de mel e do “sangue sábio” contido no caldeirão do ventre da Mãe Terra. Distorções patriarcais atribuíram em mitos posteriores a origem deste hidromel ao sacrifício de um Deus pouco conhecido, Kvasir, formado do cuspe fermentado dos deuses e de cujo sangue misturado com mel formou-se o “elixir da inspiração” (uma clara analogia e adaptação da sua verdadeira origem, o sangue menstrual). No mito finlandês o herói Lemmin Kainem, oferecido em sacrifício e enviado para o mundo subterrâneo da Deusa da morte Mana, foi ressuscitado pela sua mãe com a ajuda do mel mágico trazido pela sua protetora espiritual Mehilainem, a Abelha. Antigas seitas cristãs celebravam um rito de amor que incluía a ingestão da mistura de mel com sangue menstrual, para fins de renovação e renascimento.

O mel era valorizado tanto pelo seu aspecto sagrado, quanto por ser nutridor e preservador, como bactericida. Junto com o sal eram os únicos conservantes do mundo antigo e considerados agentes de ressurreição e transmutação. As abelhas eram símbolos do poder feminino da natureza, que criavam este produto doce e mágico e o guardavam em favos com estrutura hexagonal. O hexágono era considerado pela escola Pitagórica uma expressão do espírito de Afrodite (uma dupla deusa tríplice) e as abelhas reverenciadas como criaturas sagradas, que sabiam como formar hexágonos perfeitos.

No folclore, as abelhas eram associadas tanto com a vida, quanto com a morte. Se abandonassem sua colméia, isso era um mau presságio para o dono; em caso de morte de alguém da propriedade, as abelhas deviam ser “avisadas” e imploradas para não irem embora, suas colméias sendo viradas depois na direção contrária à casa. Sonhar com um enxame de abelhas era prenúncio de desavenças e azar, mas o mel nos sonhos era um bom augúrio.

Na Irlanda as pessoas compartilhavam seus projetos às abelhas por considerá-las mensageiras dos deuses, assegurando assim a prosperidade. Frases como “pergunte às abelhas que elas sabem” ou “use a sabedoria das abelhas” são comuns nas Ilhas Britânicas. A santa católica Gobnait (adaptação cristã de um aspecto da Deusa Brigit) salvou sua paróquia de uma invasão segurando uma colméia nas mãos, o enxame de abelhas cercando e cegando os bárbaros.

Em um selo de ouro encontrado em um túmulo cretense de 4000 anos atrás, a Deusa e Suas sacerdotisas vestidas como abelhas aparecem dançando junto. A Abelha Rainha, cuidada e nutrida por todas as suas súditas, era a representação neolítica da própria Deusa; o zumbido das abelhas era visto como sendo a transmissão da voz da Deusa. O mel tinha um importante papel no ritual do Ano Novo minóico, que começava no solstício de verão, quando a estrela Sirius nascia junto com o Sol, momento mágico que assinalava o início da colheita de mel das colméias escondidas nas florestas e grutas. Fermentado, o mel virava hidromel, bebida sagrada usada em celebrações e rituais.

Os túmulos em Micenas tinham forma de colméias, assim como também era a pedra sagrada do templo oracular de Delfos, omphalos, que representava o umbigo do mundo. Mesmo depois deste templo inicialmente consagrado a Gaia ser dedicado a Apollo, a função orácular era sempre exercida por uma sacerdotisa – Pythia, chamada de Abelha Délfica. As colméias serviram de modelo para vários templos da antiguidade; o templo egípcio da deusa Neith era conhecido com “a casa das abelhas”, o mel servindo como símbolo de proteção e usado na consagração das fundações e no embalsamento dos faraós.

Uma imagem da deusa Maat a representa como abelha com grandes asas e segurando um pote com mel, augúrio do renascimento. A estátua de Ártemis de Éfeso, considerada uma das sete maravilhas do mundo antigo, tinha inúmeras protuberâncias no seu corpo, cuja natureza não foi elucidada. Uma das teorias as considera seios, daí o nome de Ártemis com mil seios, outras teorias as vêem como frutas de palmeiras, berinjelas, cachos de uvas, ovos de avestruz, bolsas para amuletos ou cornucópias. Mas também podem ser interpretadas como os ovos que a Abelha Rainha deposita diariamente nos favos, Ártemis sendo vista como a representação da Deusa Abelha, cujo dom era gerar continuamente a vida e consagrar a morte como uma etapa que antecedia a ressurreição.
