A New Era, A New Hope: The Black Dahlia Murder - Servitude
It finally happened. We’ve waited four long, questionable years. In fact, what we have here is an album so highly anticipated, so in-demand, that the pre-orders were distributed days before it’s official release. Then again, there was so much riding on Servitude, the first new album by The Black Dahlia Murder in over four years. I don’t need to remind anyone reading this that it’s also the first…

The Black Dahlia Murder - Servitude
Starting off a review of the new Black Dahlia Murder album is tough, because there’s some context that’s needed for this record to understand why this album is a big deal. Maybe not for the overall music world, but for death metal and for this band specifically, this is an album that marks a new era for them, as well as a triumph, so to speak. Former vocalist Trevor Strnad passed away two years ago from taking his own life, and that shook up the metal community quite a bit. People are still torn up about it today, but people were wondering if and how the band would go on. Stepping up to the plate was Brian Eschbach, their longtime rhythm guitarist and only founding member remaining, but people were skeptical how they would sound with him on vocals.
The Black Dahlia Murder is one of the most beloved bands in all of metal, not merely just death metal, so they would have to tread lightly if they replaced their vocalist. I waited until the entirety of Servitude came out to check out his debut with the band on vocals, but this record is quite good, honestly, and I would even say it’s a great addition to their body of work. Does this album sound like everything else they’ve done? Sure, but Eschbach does a great job here, evoking Trevor on many occasions but also doing something new with his performance. He still has that venom and bite, but he’s not trying to sound just like him.
If anything, this album needed to be a reintroduction to the band after the last couple of years, and it works perfectly for what it is. Servitude is a short and sweet album, only 33 minutes, and it breezes by quite nicely. This record is a lot of fun, and while it’s a straightforward melodic death metal album, it also packs a punch. Because Eschbach was moving to vocals, the band also got new-ish rhythm guitarist Ryan Knight (who was in the band previously from 2009 to 2016), and the pairing of him with longtime guitarist Brandon Ellis is a match made in Heaven. Both of them sound great together, and the riffs and solos just ooze out of them, but it sounds wonderful.
I don’t have a ton to say about this record, but it’s a solid addition to their body of work. It won’t win you over if you’re not a fan, and if you are a fan, you’ll either appreciate it for what it is, or you’ll think it sucks because it’s not Trevor, which is a pretty close minded way of thinking. Yeah, Trevor was one of the best vocalists in extreme music, but the band can definitely go on if they choose to do so. I’ve been surprisingly coming back to this album quite a lot, especially when the last couple of weeks have had a handful of releases come out, but the fact that this one has gotten my attention is a good sign, all things considered. Give it a spin if you want a good and consistent melodic death metal album, even if it doesn’t necessarily do anything you haven’t heard before.

Album Review: The Black Dahlia Murder - Servitude (Metal Blade Records)
The Black Dahlia Murder are back, and what this record lacks in boldness, it makes up for with beloved melodeath familiarity.
Following the tragic passing of The Black Dahlia Murder’s frontman and co-founder Trevor Strnad in 2022, their new album is the one that many would have thought impossible. ‘Servitude’, the band’s tenth full-length, marks co-founder Brian Eschbach’s recorded debut as TBDM’s lead vocalist and lyricist—and their first with Ryan Knight on guitar since 2015’s Abysmal. It will be released on September…

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER - Servitude

The Black Dahlia Murder - Mammoth's Hand
I didn’t even have to look for this new track from The Black Dahlia Murder, since one of my Instagram followers chose to send it to me early Tuesday morning. “Mammoth’s Hand” is the second single off of Servitude, the group’s first album in over four years and their first without the late Trevor Strnad. And as you can see above, it even has a fucking sick animated video to accompany it. So, let’s…

ALBUM REVIEW: The Black Dahlia Murder – Verminous – Metal Blade
Taking their name from the brutal unsolved 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short, appropriately monikered Michigan death metallers The Black Dahlia Murder unleash a slightly different kind of visceral hell on Verminous (Metal Blade), their ninth full-length studio album. (more…)

The Black Dahlia Murder Live Preview: 9/3, Concord Music Hall, Chicago
BY JORDAN MAINZER
On their 9th studio album Verminous (Metal Blade), The Black Dahlia Murder continue to do what they do best, show off their versatility in performance and metal subgenre. Produced by their guitarist/backup vocalist Brandon Ellis, it was released just after COVID hit last year, and tonight, they play their first tour date since the pandemic at Concord Music Hall in Chicago. The album’s title track opens with--what else--Alan Cassidy’s blast beats as Ellis and guitarist Brian Eschbach add choppy riffs and cascading solos, Trevor Strnad’s alternating icy screams and guttural growls guiding the song along. Overall, they combine technical tempo changes with the fast-paced bombast of old school British metal. The galloping guitars and drums on “Removal of the Oaken Stake” recall Iron Maiden (on the day a new IM album comes out!), while a song like “Child of Night” sports drums and Max Lavelle’s bass so quick it’s almost pure noise. And where vocal chants follow the same pattern as the guitars, as on “Sunless Empire”, there’s still roam for soaring solos. The penultimate track is a 40-second acoustic interlude, gorgeous picking combined with sounds of dripping water and squeaking rodents before the band launches into closer “Dawn of Rats”. It’s the most different song on the record, but it exemplifies the band’s ability to seamlessly combine the beautiful with the ugly.
Minneapolis prog metal band After the Burial, San Diego County deathcore band Carnifex (who we’re fans of and are, too, releasing a great new album today, Graveside Confessions via Nuclear Blast), Pennsylvania technical death metal band Rivers of Nihil, and Rochester death metal band Undeath open. Remember to bring your vax cards (or negative COVID tests; if you could have gotten the shot but didn’t, you suck) and masks!

Fleshgod Apocalypse, Aversion Crown, and Whitechapel Support The Black Dahlia Murder To Wreck Venues Across America
The Black Dahlia Murder is doing a cross country tour with some of the heaviest bands in the metal community. Bands like Aversion Crown, directly from Australia and Fleshgod Apocalypse from Perugia, Italy are sweeping the nation. The House of Blues in Anaheim was a sold out show and metal heads attending did some neck damage as they relentlessly moshed and headbanged.
There is no other venue at…
