The Black Dahlia Murder - Servitude
Starting off a review of the new Black Dahlia Murder album is tough, because there’s some context that’s needed for this record to understand why this album is a big deal. Maybe not for the overall music world, but for death metal and for this band specifically, this is an album that marks a new era for them, as well as a triumph, so to speak. Former vocalist Trevor Strnad passed away two years ago from taking his own life, and that shook up the metal community quite a bit. People are still torn up about it today, but people were wondering if and how the band would go on. Stepping up to the plate was Brian Eschbach, their longtime rhythm guitarist and only founding member remaining, but people were skeptical how they would sound with him on vocals.
The Black Dahlia Murder is one of the most beloved bands in all of metal, not merely just death metal, so they would have to tread lightly if they replaced their vocalist. I waited until the entirety of Servitude came out to check out his debut with the band on vocals, but this record is quite good, honestly, and I would even say it’s a great addition to their body of work. Does this album sound like everything else they’ve done? Sure, but Eschbach does a great job here, evoking Trevor on many occasions but also doing something new with his performance. He still has that venom and bite, but he’s not trying to sound just like him.
If anything, this album needed to be a reintroduction to the band after the last couple of years, and it works perfectly for what it is. Servitude is a short and sweet album, only 33 minutes, and it breezes by quite nicely. This record is a lot of fun, and while it’s a straightforward melodic death metal album, it also packs a punch. Because Eschbach was moving to vocals, the band also got new-ish rhythm guitarist Ryan Knight (who was in the band previously from 2009 to 2016), and the pairing of him with longtime guitarist Brandon Ellis is a match made in Heaven. Both of them sound great together, and the riffs and solos just ooze out of them, but it sounds wonderful.
I don’t have a ton to say about this record, but it’s a solid addition to their body of work. It won’t win you over if you’re not a fan, and if you are a fan, you’ll either appreciate it for what it is, or you’ll think it sucks because it’s not Trevor, which is a pretty close minded way of thinking. Yeah, Trevor was one of the best vocalists in extreme music, but the band can definitely go on if they choose to do so. I’ve been surprisingly coming back to this album quite a lot, especially when the last couple of weeks have had a handful of releases come out, but the fact that this one has gotten my attention is a good sign, all things considered. Give it a spin if you want a good and consistent melodic death metal album, even if it doesn’t necessarily do anything you haven’t heard before.

A New Era, A New Hope: The Black Dahlia Murder - Servitude
It finally happened. We’ve waited four long, questionable years. In fact, what we have here is an album so highly anticipated, so in-demand, that the pre-orders were distributed days before it’s official release. Then again, there was so much riding on Servitude, the first new album by The Black Dahlia Murder in over four years. I don’t need to remind anyone reading this that it’s also the first…

Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder has died...
Just the best guy. Such a perfect example of a Michigan metalhead. So thankful to cut my teeth at the same venues and shows as this man and that band. Don't be afraid of us here. Just feed us coneys and give us weed and we will only bite our beer cans. Coming from Detroit we're supposed to be tough and mean and hated by people and shit. And Trevor showed how ridiculous we can be here and it was so rad to have him showcase the strange that comes from Michigan. We will out smoke, out drink, out fight, everyone. And then play D&D. The Black Dahlia Murder is our band. They did everything for us here in Detroit. Trevor was the funniest guy to be around. He was so awesome. He always had the best weed. I am so thankful for TBDM giving a shit about the Downriver kids. I fucking can't...

(130/?) To my brothers who've fallen before me, I will walk with you again.
Warning: This entry deals with suicide and two recent deaths in the metal community who are all but stated to have suicide be the cause of death. If this is a topic you are not comfortable with, there is no shame in skipping this. Have yourself a good day/night and I'll see ya' in the next one.
Another singer who most likely committed suicide. Sure, they haven't come out and outright say it, but the suicide prevention lifeline phone number? The language about reaching out and getting in touch with people? The affirmation that it's OK to ask for help? ---- You can't put that shit on standby, kemosabi. A lot of people sunk real low during this pandemic. We're still trying to crawl out of the wreckage so please, stay in touch with your bros, your family, your SO/romantic partner/fuckbuddy. Your tribe is important in times like these because they want to help you and sometimes, when possible, you hafta help them, capisce? ---- Look out and be kind to your tribe, fools, because cheese knows shit gets easily stacked against us. Now, if you can use this resource or you know of someone, don't be shy and spread that word(link is for Suicide Prevention resources worldwide). Take care now, and I hope I can see/read ya' tomorrow.

Oh I know eluveitie
I listen to almost all genres and fuckin subgenres of this fuckin scene. Just kinda laughing about it, I’m neither solely committed to either high or low brow
Come to think of it, maybe that’s why I love Black Dahlia so much 🤔
When it comes to metal, I’m 50/50
Yes I want to hear beautifully written poetry screamed over soaring and intricate music that’s on par with Mozart
But I also want to hear some chugging riff with a guy drunkenly yelling about another time he was drunk

The Black Dahlia Murder - Mammoth's Hand
I didn’t even have to look for this new track from The Black Dahlia Murder, since one of my Instagram followers chose to send it to me early Tuesday morning. “Mammoth’s Hand” is the second single off of Servitude, the group’s first album in over four years and their first without the late Trevor Strnad. And as you can see above, it even has a fucking sick animated video to accompany it. So, let’s…
