National Guacamole Day
Learn to make guacamole at home, and discover some of the many versatile uses for this tasty invention, from a simple dip to a sandwich spread and more.
Whether that bright green, creamy and chunky treat is piled on top of a tortilla chip or used as a garnish for a Mexican entree, guacamole is a delicious way to truly enhance a snack or a meal!
History of National Guacamole Day
While the day itself doesn’t exactly seem to have any particularly poetic origin, National Guacamole Day is a terrific excuse to indulge in the tastiest of dips!
However, guacamole itself seems to have its origins with the Aztec people group at some time before the 16th century. Early guacamole recipes only included mashed avocado and it became very popular due to the excellent health benefits of the avocado. Adding in the tomatoes and onions came later, which was a natural development since those are also native to the Americas. Eventually the lime juice was added, which originated in the Middle East but made its way west with the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
The word, guacamole, originally came from the word “āhuacamolli” which translates literally to mean “avocado sauce”.
Not only is it a great addition to a savoury spread, it’s also good for you! This is because “guac” is made from avocados, which are nutrient dense and packed with healthy fats that help the body lower bad cholesterol, all of which contributes to having a good ol’ time and living as long as possible.
How to Celebrate National Guacamole Day
Celebrating this day is easy and can be filled with fun as well as delicious flavors! Enjoy the day with some of these ideas:
Eat Guacamole
Even if there’s no particular reason, other than it being an awesome day, go ahead and celebrate National Guacamole Day by picking up some at the store! Don’t forget to grab something to put it on, such as a bag of tortilla chips, a selection of veggie sticks (carrots, celery or cucumbers), or a piece of tasty toast. Eat it with french fries, slather it on a quesadilla or use it as a filling or garnish for tacos. The options for eating guacamole are virtually endless!
Learn to Make Guacamole at Home
Freshly made guacamole is the most delicious part of this day! All it takes is buying some ripe avocados and making it from scratch at home. Blend the avocado, season with salt and it’s done!
Of course it might be even tastier to add a bit of flavor to it, such as lemon or lime juice for some zesty citrus notes. Or perhaps some tomato, garlic and onion to expand the palette, the choice is completely personal.
Find Creative Ways to Eat Guacamole
Many people associate guacamole only with corn tortilla chips. But there’s so much more to it than that! For those who are trying to get a bit healthier and forego the chips, or for those who are just looking for a bit of adventure, guacamole has a lot of creative ways it can be used for snacks and meals. In addition to using it as a dip, try out these ideas for guacamole:
Spread It On a Sandwich. Guacamole makes a great sandwich condiment. Simply pile it on top of a hamburger or chicken burger for a tasty treat. Guac is also tasty when used as a healthy addition to a grilled cheese sandwich.
Top a Pizza With It. That’s right! A boring pizza can be made delicious with guacamole. Some people like to combine it with Buffalo sauce and chicken as well.
Stuff Mushrooms with It. Keep it vegetarian by filling hollowed out mushrooms with guacamole and topping with a spicy Buffalo sauce. Yum!
Make It Into a Salad. Guacamole can make a healthy and delicious base for a salad. Create a Greek fusion by adding feta cheese, or turn it a bit sweet by piling it up with chunks of watermelon or peaches.
Have a National Guacamole Day Party
Invite friends and family over for a little get together with the intention of celebrating National Guacamole Day. Give a nod to guacamole’s origins by decorating and dressing up in costumes that channel Central American culture.
Of course, the table of refreshments will need to center around the guest of honor–guacamole! But it can be filled with all sorts of other south of the border treats as well. Try offering some tostadas, chips & salsa, taquitos or quesadillas. Toss in some churros or flan for a delicious dessert.
Learn Fun Facts About Avocados
Since they are the main ingredient for guacamole, a fun activity for the day would be to learn a bit of trivia to share with friends or coworkers as National Guacamole Day is celebrated. Try these fun facts to share:
Avocados are a fruit. That’s right, technically guacamole is actually a smashed fruit salad!
Hass Avocados were banned in the US. In an effort to control pest problems, the beloved Hass Avocado was once banned in the United States. From 1914 to 1997, it was illegal to import these delicious fruits. Everyone is much happier now that they are legal again.
The World Record for Guacamole was over 3 tons. Created by a wholesaler in Jalisco, Mexico, this batch of guac took more than 800 people to make it. It contained more than 25,000 avocados, 3,500 tomatoes and 3,000 lemons.
Remember–it’s not necessary to only indulge in this tasty treat on National Guacamole Day. After all, it’s good for you all year round, this is just an extra special reason to enjoy it!

reading the labour manifesto.
seems ok so far. usual bit of waffle.
(waffle of my own below, which I've stuck under a readmore)
they're gonna recruit more teachers. fantastic! (how? it doesn't say. but how hard can it be?)
free school breakfasts in every primary school is actually great news and i'm very happy about that!*
*I think that's what "free breakfast clubs" means, not just free morning childcare. not that free morning childcare wouldn't be fab, mind you
they're going to end tax loopholes, which might be harder than they make it sound, but it sounds like they have a few plans to make it more difficult. and they are gonna focus on large businesses avoiding tax, so what actually matters.
they're really vague on immigration, which does worry me. they're gonna stop illegal dangerous crossing and not send people to Rwanda, but they're not actually taking a position on whether immigration is good for this country or not.
"securonomics". lol.
i don't really understand economics and it's always hard to judge what it actually means. there's a bit of "yay business is good" for sure, but then also talking about "shaping markets not just serving them" and the downsides of big corporations. they are capping corporation tax at 25%, apparently the lowest of the G7 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, US, UK and Japan) which seems backwards to me.
national rail is coming back! i was not even born when they got privatised but it will be interesting to see what that looks like. and local bus services are allowed too i think? their transport plan actually looks pretty good to me.
building more houses, which. i mean. i'm not actually sure but i think empty houses is more the issue? but then there is a proper housing crisis at the moment so. some stuff about environmental friendly housing which seems reasonable but i don't know enough to make a full judgement on.
growth growth growth. i'm not a fan, but then the 2nd biggest political party in the uk is hardly going to say "capitalism is a mistake and we need to get used to a lower standard of living in the grand scheme of things in order to be able to live sustainably" so. i'll take it on the chin.
oh! they do have an opinion on migration. it's bad. and "must be properly controlled and managed". and you were doing so well until now.
reforming jobcentre and work capability assessments, which are definitely broken at the moment. so hopefully any changes to that will be an improvement.
more workers rights! yay!
i'm gonna read the rest of it tomorrow. i may also ramble my thoughts on here, more just so that i don't get bored reading through it than anything.

growing up, preston always had one role. he was the big brother, he was the one that looked out over his younger siblings while his parents were working long hours. he was always watching over his two younger siblings being a parental figure to them. he was always so supportive and always felt like he was very committed to his family, repressing who he was.
once he entered high school, he realized that he had many talents and many different interest. he loved music. he was big on music. he loved music growing up, playing guitar and piano. and that interest continued in high school, and he picked up singing. that was when his music teacher told him that he should apply to music schools. but he never found it practical.
but when he started to create content and posting it alone, that's when he was discovered. an little canadian with a voice of an angel. the amount of views he'd get, people started to find him more and more that eventually a manager for a music label found him and he signed with the record label.
this was a huge surprise for his family. but they were very proud of whatever preston did. so he had his first ep at 17, which debuted number 5 on billboard. it was an accomplishment. but he felt like it was a one and done. he wanted to finish his senior year of high school, and then college was around the corner too. but that didn't stop him from posting covers, and going to different events to perform his ep.
once he was in college, that was when he knew that music really was something he wanted to do. so his sophomore year, he ended up writing another album, cranking it out and eventually releasing it. it ended up debuting number one on billboard 100. it was such a success, he was in the eyes of taylor swift, in which preston had become her opener for her 1989 tour.
preston's next album was when he found pure success. girls loved him, men wanted to be him. and it was nonstop recording and planning for future music and albums, he was loving it. but he was missing a lot of things, his family, his friends, and he started to see himself change and mold into what the record label wanted him to be.
hiding his sexuality was something he had done for a long time, but now the label wanted him to perceive himself as the bachelor boy, someone that everyone wanted to be with but couldn't have. he wasn't sure if he would outlast that, but he was in his twenties, and he was having fun. and his self titled album, preston campbell, had found even more success than the last albums. so he didn't stop.
but now, preston was thirty, in the middle of writing his latest album, recording new songs, and now there was a guy that he had eyes for that has changed everything about him. one of the songs being written about himself, his identity, but also for the guy that he was falling for every day. as terrified as he is to be his most truest and authentic self, he is willing to risk the backlash from his fans and his label if he decided to fully come out and choose the guy he wants to end up being with.
○ ′ ✨ ––––––––––––––––––– 007
is currently recording his new album, which preston says is his most vulnerable album yet.
the new album, wonder is going to be released in december of this year.
is currently in a flirtationship with one marcos cavalho
preston plans to fully come out during the new year where he could finally be free

Penn Yan Aero - Flight over Keuka and Canandaigua Lakes
A friend of mine is a pilot of vintage planes at Penn Yan Aero - a small municipal airport at the top of Keuka Lake. She offered to take me up one day to test out her favorite plane after some updates were made. The views were spectacular ✈️
Every Fourth of July the club hosts a pancake breakfast and people fly in from all over the U.S. and Canada in their old vintage planes to support their friends in Penn Yan. They also offer plane rides for $20 for anyone who wants to see the sky ~

Day 3 - July 1st (Canada Day)
Yes, I’ll say it again, last night’s campsite was the worst ever. When we got up, the five of us (including Natasha) decided to go for breakfast at Mel’s instead of cooking in camp. When we got there we learned that it was closed but that the Lions were holding a pancake breakfast at the community center. Sure enough, when we found the community we were able to enjoy some local hospitality for a good cause, whatever it may have been. By the time we left breakfast, we already had 5 ride miles logged.
The route out of Elkford started with a 1000 foot climb on pavement over 3 miles that took us north of town. At the top we turned onto a gravel road that was soon rutted with 4 wheel drive tracks and mud puddles. About 10 miles in, we looked into the valley below to see Elkford. We had gone north only to pass Elkford again as we came south and it took us about two hours to get there. That mountain road continued through high meadows with lovely mountain views. Fortunately it was taking us downhill.
Since it was Saturday and Canada Day we got to see how the locals enjoy the mountains. Let me tell you, it was on bicycles. Our first encounter was with a half dozen 4-wheel drive trucks and jeeps speeding their way higher into the mountains. Our second was with a couple trail motorcycles. Everyone slowed as was necessary but probably would have been more happy if they didn’t have to.
Somewhere along the way.
Eventually we reconnected with the Elk River Trail. This time it was a few miles of flowy single track. Fortunately not technical but definitely up and down. We popped off that and onto some secondary roads into Sparwood. As we approached town we could see the coal mining operation that was reducing a nearby mountain to 1/2 its size. The coal was hauled away by train, one of which we saw rolling by but never saw its first or last cars even after watching for 5 minutes.
You’re looking at a coal mine. Zoom in to see current operations. To the left of that is previous operations.
In Sparwood we checked out the worlds largest truck (a monument to big coal) in the center of town. That gave us a chance to have lunch and just sit in the shade on a patch of grass for an hour or so.
Big truck! Used to move coal.
After we left Sparwood we ended up on a stretch of gravel road that was so rocky it was like riding on the cobbles in France. Again, bone jarring. It required all of our concentration to stay upright.
Steep AND rocky!
Later we found some smooth gravel then some double track that required a little hike-a-bike. Back on smooth gravel we found the road’s end at some railroad tracks. We had to carry our bikes over the tracks to get on pavement for the final miles into Fernie.
Busy tracks!
Throughout the last few hours of the day we were hammered by a constant headwind. It both slowed our progress and drained our spirits.
Insane winds.
Finally at our hostel for the evening, we quickly ordered beers and sat out on the porch overlooking the street and the mountains beyond. Two women were there and, naturally, we sparked up a conversation. They were in town from Calgary to see a band they liked, Daring Greatly. They didn’t have tickets so they needed to get to the club early for the 10pm show. They were already 3 drinks into their evening at 5pm so it was going to be interesting to hear their reviews on the show. It turned out they didn’t make it to the 5th song.
Beers upon arrival.
We, on the other hand, filled our afternoon with laundry and a good meal downtown. Upon returning to the hostel we met an attractive young couple that said they had just moved into the area. They were quick to invite us into the bar for shots. However, they just gave off a grifter vibe and we all thought better of their offer. Our bunk beds without AC were the better choice.
Downtown Fernie
Couple observations from the day: First, it may look easy on paper but… today was our toughest day mentally and physically. Jet lag, lack of sleep, head winds, rough terrain all made it difficult. Second, sometimes people give off a vibe and you know there’s an agenda. Follow you gut and avoid a situation.
Cheers!
Ride stats:
Miles ridden: 49.53
Elevation gain: 2,027 ft
Max elevation: 5,075 ft
Start time: 8:07am
Moving time: 5:21:05
Elapsed time: 8:04:46
Ave speed: 9.2 mph

Seeking a Principal Vernon or Andrew Clark for my John Bender, The Breakfast Club RP. A little about me: my name's Jayden and I'm thirty-six years old from Canada. I've been RP'ing off and on for well over ten years now. I like to think I'm a fairly decent writer and can get into whichever character I'm playing. My posts tend to range from a sentence or two to a few paragraphs; it really all depends on the scene and I feel that quality trumps quantity every time. I'm not as active as some would prefer - due to my job I can sometimes post a few times a day though, other times, it may be a few days.
I RP as John Bender m/m with my preferred pairing being Principal Vernon/John Bender, but willing to RP with an Andrew Clark.
Would also like to incorporate John's father into the story in some way, as I do love me some Hurt in fics.
I would prefer though that we have no original characters unless they're very minor to the scene/story.
Let me know if you're interested and we can discuss more on storylines and such!

Vancouver -> DUBlin
This adventure was a little longer… 7 hours longer to be exact! Starting off with Canada’s baby safety manual, disappointing to say the least. Looks boring, you can tell what it is, but where’s the character? I should be able to look into the babies eyes and see a story. But no eyes were found.
Decided to do a food review. First we had dinner (I got a special vegetarian option!) it consisted of korma with rice and potatoes! It was super yummy. I was a Little sus of the vegetables on the side so I didn’t bother, but the bread was pretty good! It looked like my school cafeteria bread which tastes old and GROSS. Overall 6/10 for airplane food which isn’t too bad! Breakfast was just bread, margarine, and fruit! All of it was good, didn’t quite fill me up but it was tasty. Solid 8/10!
Watched sooo many movies and tv shows and didn’t get a wink of sleep! All I remember is the breakfast club and a singular episode of SpongeBob, but it was all a blur of me staring at the small seat tv for hours on end. Do I regret not sleeping? Absolutely. Future me is kicking myself…

World Egg Day
Have fun with egg-based meals, from scrambled eggs for breakfast to egg cake for dessert. Make use of eggs in other ways by decorating them with family.
Arguably one of the oldest foods known to man, eggs have played an important role in the lives and health of humans since time out of mind. These little goodies are packed full of protein, and also serve as the base for some of the most wonderful breakfast foods and culinary additions, including that most perfect of condiments for sandwiches, mayonnaise.
World Egg Day celebrates these delightful little packages of deliciousness and the incredibly important role they play in the day-to-day lives of humans all over the planet.
History of World Egg Day
Typically, when most tend to consider the egg, they think of those white or brown shelled emissions that come from the common chicken. Containing a small treasure with a golden yolk, and the potential to become so many things that it strains the boundaries of human imagination, the Chicken Egg has become the definitive image when the word ‘egg’ is spoken.
But these are not the only type of eggs that mankind finds valuable, consider for a moment caviar, a symbol of wealth in its own right. These are, of course, the eggs of various fish, and World Egg Day represents their importance as well.
The history of the egg expands far beyond merely a culinary concern and, in fact, has had great importance in multiple cultures for reasons both decorative and religious. In many cultures around the world, eggs have been a sign of fertility and representative of life, renewal and rebirth.
Consider for a moment the Easter Egg, where children hunt each year for brightly colored eggs or plastic shaped in the form of the egg which contains treats such as chocolate, jellybeans, or money. In fact, decorated Easter Eggs are one of the oldest forms of decorative artwork in the world.
And what about the Faberge Eggs? Those beautiful pieces of artistic elegance created by Peter Carl Faberge from St. Petersburg, Russia. So beautiful were these that they were prized even by Czars!
World Egg Day reminds you to explore the hallways of history and the places that eggs occupy there. It’s time to get into celebrating World Egg Day!
How to Celebrate World Egg Day
Getting involved with celebrating World Egg Day can become an exciting adventure when it comes to celebrating everything to do with the Egg. Try out some of these ideas for celebrating the day:
Enjoy a Meal Including Eggs
Celebrating World Egg Day best starts with a great big plate of scrambled eggs served along with their most bosom companion, bacon. With a dash of salt and pepper, plus a little bit of cheese, that simple plate of eggs will be absolutely delicious!
For lunch, a great idea would be to create a sandwich upon a slice of Challah bread, a Jewish Egg bread that is nothing short of amazing. And the center of the sandwich? Well, that probably needs to be egg salad, of course. Make it with some boiled eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, and some chopped dill pickle relish.
Those who are feeling a little bit adventurous may look and find if there are types of eggs that they have, perhaps, never tried before. Duck Eggs are especially prized, and Goose Eggs are larger than the typical chicken egg but can be quite interesting when cooked in a variety of ways.
Learn Some Fun Facts About Eggs
World Egg Day is the perfect time to brush up on interesting tidbits and trivia that can be shared with various coworkers, neighbors, friends, or family members. They’ll be impressed with unique and interesting bits of information, such as:
Egg Color is Determined By Earlobes. The color of the egg doesn’t have anything to do with freshness, flavor or nutritional value. In fact, the color of the egg is determined strictly by the breed of the hen and corresponds to the color of the hen’s earlobe!
Chefs Hats are Influenced by Eggs. Some people aren’t aware that going back a little in history, the meaning of the number of the pleats in a chef’s hat was related to the number of ways that the chef was able to cook an egg. The ultimate goal and badge of true honor was to get to 100 pleats.
Iowa is a Big Egg Producer. In the United States, the state of Iowa leads the nation in egg production, with more than 14 billion eggs every single year! The next state comes in at around half of that: Ohio produces a little under 8 billion eggs per year.
Eating cooked eggs is healthier. While some people think that eating a raw egg will help to build muscle, that’s not true. Only about 50% of the proteins in a raw egg can be digested. After it’s cooked, the body can digest more than 90% of the proteins.
Get Creative with an Ostrich Eggs
For those of an artistic bent, there is great potential to be found in a carefully drained Ostrich Egg, one could even make themselves a lamp from such an egg!
World Egg Day encourages people all over the world to truly explore the possibilities within the egg!
Bonus: Egg Freshness Tips
Not sure if those eggs are fresh? The best way to test for freshness is by dropping an egg into a glass of water. If it sinks, it is fresh. If it floats? It’s probably old.
Eggs that have a cloudy white are extremely fresh! Most eggs that come from the grocery store have been sitting around a little longer and will probably have “whites” that are actually clear and colorless. They’re still fine to eat, though, unless the “whites” are some color other than cloudy white or transparent.

I am sitting on our airplane right now! James doesn't seem in as much distress as then did last time, or during take off. So I can be a little more relaxed because they are. I hate seeing them in so much abject terror.
Thankfully they seem a little better. And besides so stupid stress that was outside of our control today went really well. All things considered. And we should be home before midnight.
After I finished my post last night we would watch the sun set and go and get an ice cream cone. Which was so much better then the first night when it was just ice. Which made us both laugh because we had avoided it all week thinking it was just bad. We would wander for a while. While watching Canada come in people were standing on the pier and waving and singing and saying hello and it was such a sweet little human moment. Those moments where we are just reaching out to each other. It was so cute. And while we watched the sun set with the mountains in the distance a seal popped out of the water! I even got it making a little twist before it swam away and it was the best. Made me feel so happy.
We would go and write out review and thanks to our room attendant, I also drew him a little picture of the towel swans. We sat in the card room for the last time.
We would go back to the room eventually though. To enjoy bridge cam for the last time. And go through our bags to make sure we had a plan for the last few things. It was going to be tight for sure but we would make it work. I was really proud of us.
I took a melatonin to try and easy my racing thoughts. And it mostly helped. I would fall asleep easier. But I woke up at midnight. I'm glad I did because I had a text. Confirming our pickup at the pier point.
But the issue was it was for 6am. This was wrong. We had called on Friday and told them the correct time. They said that was fine. But this was wrong. So I texted the number back, unsure if it was a real person but it was. And they were very much not helpful. They just were like. No, you didn't contact us, you made this appointment. And I said no sorry we didn't, Amtrak did, and we contacted you on Friday. And this person had the audacity to ask me what they wanted them to do about it now it was midnight. Dude you were the one who contacted me at midnight!! What do you mean??? They asked when our flight was. I said 11. And they said they probably wouldn't have a driver for me at 8, when we were allowed off the ship. And I said okay let me know in the morning. And then I tried to sleep.
My anxiety was super high. I only had 20 minutes left of wifi. I needed to have a plan. Thankfully Seattle is a city and a cab would be $40 and not the worst thing in the world. I sent James a text so they would know what was up. It wouldn't make sense to wake them up and stress them too.
So I stayed up until around 2. Watching videos. I watched a really interesting one about Nazi dog whistles and the bored ape vacation club nft and how there are wild connections between the two. But because it's multi layered Internet culture most people wouldn't ever know how many Nazi connections are there. Which is both super shocking and not surprising at all. Dog whistles are so insidious because there is always the plausible deniability. But it's important to know them.
James would wake up to use the bathroom and I filled them in about the pick up. They agreed we would handle it. And that gave me the reassurance to fall back asleep.
It wasn't amazing sleep. And waking up at 6 I didn't feel great. I tried my best to wake myself up with water and a little stretching. And then it was just. The last things to pack, the double checking. And then breakfast.
I honestly felt to sick to eat. The idea of eating the same breakfast I really enjoyed all week make me nauseous. I was not having a good time. I sat at our table with my head in my hands I felt so ill. It just makes me think about being a kid, how often my stomach hurt, especially before events and activities. Even if I really wanted to do them, the transition to them l, the unknown variables of other people, it's wild that I have only realized that that was probably just anxiety, still is anxiety, like two months ago. I just thought I was nervous but it turns out most people don't get such intense stomach pains and nausea. James has been so sweet about it but I know it's probably a little annoying. I love them for supporting me when I'm suffering.
We went back to our room and got our bags and said goodbye to our room. We went to the 6th deck but after sitting there for a few minutes I went to check and the staff told me we would be leaving from deck 7. So I went and got James and we went up there. Except when we got there they told us the end of the line was on the other side of the deck. Alright. So we struggled and got through to that side. Where they told us the line was on the other side? And while all the staff can speak English there was for sure some confusion and something getting lost in translation. The second staff member asked me who told us to come down there, like he wanted a name, but I didn't know their name and also I'm not a snitch. But he came back with us and we found that the line was actually coming from both directions, so we got in the spot where they intersected.
Where everyone was complaining. Like guys it's fine. Well get off eventually. And like I feel for people that made flights to early but why would you make an 8am flight? Bad idea. We were cutting it close with our noon flight. But it would be fine.
I started feeling better while talking to people. Dazzling them with our small bags and packing abilities. Chatting about what we liked about the flight. Met some navy vets and got to talk about Torsk and how we met on the USS Constellation. People congratulating us on our honeymoon. It was a nice way to end the cruise.
We went through the security check. James seemed anxious still but we made it out together. And once we were outside a taxi driver was like. Follow me! And he was booking it but James kept up. I have little legs and could only keep up so well. James came back and I said I'm only getting in this cab if it's a yellow cab. And thankfully it was. No scam there. He was a nice guy but his driving left something to be desired. At least we could have the windows open.
The drop off lane was wild so we all decided he should just drop us off at the pick up side of the airport and we'll just figure it out. Was that technically a ticketable offense? Probably. But we got out and said goodbye and we were at the airport.
James likes to go to the desk and get printed tickets. Which is fine with me. So we did that and then to TSA. Where I made sure we had everything out and ready. And I just enjoyed people watching.
My favorite was a little girl and her mom. It was clearly when first time on a plane and she exclaimed that it was "just like a ferry but with lots more people!" And that was just so cute. They take a lot of ferries in Seattle so her connection to that made sense but it was so sweet. Also she had little purple and white cowboy boots on and it was just so cute.
We got pulled at TSA because my suitcase had James's book in it and it looks strange on the x-ray. But the man was very nice and figured it out first and was kind. Sometimes they can be so mean for no reason. So this was very pleasant.
But we still had a few hours to waste. We stopped to reset ourselves. I accidentally ripped my necklace off and had to take a minute to fix the chain. Which is hard when you have no tools but I used my teeth and will fix it better at home.
We decided to explore. We both wanted cinnamon things. I wanted a pretzel and James a cinnabun but no luck. While this was a really nice airport it had almost no chains! Except Starbucks which it had 8 of. Ah well. Instead we road the tram/train between gates. Got a grilled cheese made with the fancy cheese we saw being made at pikes place. And it was very good. James was grimacing from pain in their shoulder where they have their plate from the accident. While the backpack suitcase was a great find it is hard for James to keep taking it on and off. And it was just heavy. So we went and found a seat. And ate my sandwich and talked a little.
Eventually the flight before ours left and we were able to get seats at the gate. Charged our phones. And I drew and worked on my embroidery for a while.
The agents at the gate asked for people to check bags again. This was a larger plane but it is also full. So we checked our bags. And I ended up having a conversation with the woman about James's injury and it turns out her daughter also was in a bike accident but the paramedics apparently didn't think anyone survived at first so they weren't moving to fats but thank God someone noticed because her daughter was alive and barely hurt, just stuck with her bike in the windshield! Wild. We both felt very lucky that we have our loved ones still.
Me and James would secretly text while standing next to each other about the shitty husband we overheard. It was like this shitty husband's on TikTok! He went and got a sandwich for himself and called her a selfish brat when she asked if she got anything. Then sent her off to find him hummus apparently and while he was gone he spilled his coffee all over the floor and her bag and didn't even try to clean it up. Then when she came back without hummus he basically completely dismissed her and she said she wanted to get food as well and he acted like she was being so stupid. She looked so defeated it broke my heart. It made James say comparatively they are a great husband and I was like hey! Stop being mean to my husband, you are a great husband.
Soon we would get on the plane. And we got seats over the wing again. We thought we would leave on time and actually get to Washington a little early but no luck. Maintenance had to come out and check something and we left a little late. Ah well.
The plane just landed in Washington! It was a pretty easy flight all things considered. I did not sleep. I did get my last digital drawing done and did some embroidery. I made it another couple chapters into my book. And hoenslty besides having the pee basically the entire time but being to nervous to use the airplane bathroom, it was a pretty comfortable flight. James didn't seem so stressed out. I was pretty comfortable overall.
Now we are waiting to get off the plane. They haven't opened the doors yet but hopefully soon.
We did get off the plane pretty fast. This is for sure the ugliest airport I've ever been too. It's just kind of dirty. It has dropped ceilings and they all had moisture stains. Gross. Also they had a shuttle system to get to the main hub. Which was packed and poorly designed so everyone was having a bad time. Then we had to get on a second shuttle bus to go to the rental car and there is basically no signage explaining where to go or what to do. But James thankfully checked with a driver for a different company and soon the shuttle was here. Which was packed and pretty stuffy. But at least we were going the right way.
We are waiting in line for the rental car now. So I'm going to post this. We have about an hour and a half until we see home. I am so excited to see Sweetp and be in our space.
Tomorrow me and James will return the car and get groceries and do laundry and I have my rhumatologist appointment. I miss our trip but it also gave me a lot of perspective. I hope I can carry this joy for a while.
Good ight everyone. I hope you sleep well.

The Road to Sligo
Said goodbye to Mount Falcon but not before having our last breakfast at the hotel. While having breakfast we met a group of men from Canada and one from Singapore that were on a ten day golf trip. As they said, they were going at it hard, playing 18 or 36 holes everyday for eight straight days. I could not do that! My back is still a little sore from my 27 holes yesterday.
We had a minor emergency we had to get taken care of today, Kim needed her nails done! After striking out at finding a place in Ballina, we drove to our next destination - Sligo. Finding a nail place that did acrylic nails proved harder than anticipated! But a determined Kim Bell was not to be denied and NOT to my great surprise by 1:00p today the nail dilemma had been solved!!
We are staying at a pretty cool hotel called The Glasshouse. It is located next to the Garavogue River that runs through the middle of Sligo. There are many restaurants and pubs that line the river downtown. Walkers is a popular bar and restaurant that we stopped by for a pint of Guinness and some fish and chips.
Sligo has two famous names associated with it. W. B. Yeats, Nobel Peace Prize winning writer and poet and Bram Stoker, writer and creator of Dracula. Learned a lot about both when I went through the W. B Yeats museum while I waited on Kim to take care of her nail emergency!
With no golf today, we found plenty to do just walking around Sligo and checking out some of the local stores that you wouldn’t find in the US or outside of Sligo for that matter.
It was another beautiful sunny and windy day here in Ireland with temps in the mid 60′s. Tomorrow sees temperatures drop back down in the low 50′s when we will be teeing up at County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point.
Spending the rest of tonight listening to our son-in-laws baseball team the Anderson University Ravens play in the HCAC Conference tournament. Go Ravens!! Hope everyone is doing well! gb

The complete list of films featured on this blog’s 2023 “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
Hello everyone,
Thank you once more for allowing me to present the annual marathon of Oscar-nominated films to your dashboards. This year, the films were grouped by genre or subgenre in primetime (5 PM Pacific into the night). This is the most exclusive period on this blog, as the selection of films that I can post and queue about is at its most limited. But at the same time, the blog is at its most accessible as this yearly marathon’s selection skew to more popular fare. I hope you enjoyed this year’s presentation of 31 Days of Oscar.
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 380 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This is down from last year’s record of 420. But that count remains only a fraction of the 5,019 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards since 1927.
Of those 380, 37 were short films (53 short films is the record, which was set last year). 343 were feature films.
BREAKDOWN BY DECADE 1927-1929: 6 1930s: 52 1940s: 53 1950s: 50 1960s: 37 1970s: 31 1980s: 25 1990s: 25 2000s: 27 2010s: 31 2020s: 50

Time for the list. 62 Best Picture winners and the one (and only) winner for Unique and Artistic Production that I featured this year are in bold. Asterisked (*) films are films I haven’t seen in their entirety as of the publishing of this post. Films primarily not in the English language are accompanied with their nation(s) of origin.

He made me a better ad guy.
March 20, 2023
I have lost another close friend. Dave Patton became my trusted sidekick during the early going of the 25 or so years we worked together as creative team partners, mostly at Ross Roy. It was there that co-workers would refer to "Len and Dave" during staff meetings as easily as they might say "bacon and eggs" at breakfast time. When the two of us worked together on something--whether a simple postcard or a full-blown campaign--well, usually it just plain worked. Were it not for Dave, there's no way that this writer's career would have gone as well as it did. Dave turned my jokes into arresting headlines. He gave the stuff I wrote a "look." The truth is, he was the better idea guy, the better concept guy, the truly creative guy on a team of two buds who worked mostly on cars and enjoyed a helluva ride. I collaborated with his family on the following obituary:
Dave Patton August 29, 1944 to March 7, 2023
Dave Patton loved lines.
He loved the swoopy lines of fat-fendered street rods, the sleek lines of vintage Corvettes. He loved the fine lines of Native American turquoise jewelry. And, oh, how he loved to draw the lines that go into the creation of a successful print ad, direct mail piece or digital communication.
The world lost the consummate advertising design professional—as well as husband, brother, father and grandfather—when Dave Patton, 78, died on March 7, 2023, due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease and Covid in Portage, Michigan.
Dave was a kind and generous soul with a wry wit and sarcastic sense of humor. He loved music and would break into his signature dance moves every time he heard a good song. His love of early rock ‘n' roll, Motown music and patented steps led to an appearance on Club 1270, a dance program for teenagers on WXYZ TV during the early ‘60s.
Dave was born in Detroit on August 29, 1944, to James ("Bud") and Bonney (Babcock) Patton. The young, rambunctious Dave Patton, a kid with a short attention span, was always drawing in class. He won the Senior Award for “Best Artist" at Birmingham Seaholm High School.
As an adolescent, Dave was a fleet-footed running back for Pierce Junior High in Birmingham, which evolved into a lifelong, fanatical love affair with University of Michigan football. He was also a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers. After graduating from Seaholm High in 1963, he enlisted in the Navy and traveled the world aboard the S.S. Garcia. After he returned home from the Navy, he enrolled at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, which would become the Center for Creative Studies. Dave met his sweetheart, Diane Morrison, at age 16. They wed shortly after his return from the service in 1967 and were married for 56 years. As a devoted father he coached Little League, faithfully attended his children's ice skating and dance lessons, drove the family minivan around the Midwest and Canada for his son’s hockey games, and passed his design genes onto both of his children who create jewelry, hand-blown glass and other forms of art.
Fine art--paintings, photography, sculptures, metal and ceramic works--were often at the center of the Patton family’s life. Artistic discoveries during travels to New York, Taos, Naples, Fairbanks, Rome and other faraway places resulted in a collection that set the Patton home apart. Dave's career as an advertising designer and art director began at Meldrum & Fewsmith in Detroit. He then moved to Ross Roy, Michigan’s largest independent advertising agency at the time, where he began working on such accounts as Kmart, Kelsey-Hayes and Federal Mogul. When he started working on the Chrysler account, Dave designed the likes of giant foam-board spark plugs that hung from showroom ceilings and “dimensional mail packages”--communications in tubes and boxes--that dared customers not to open them. During the early ‘90s he was named co-creative director for automotive direct marketing at Ross Roy, helping to manage a team of writers and art directors who produced all of Chrysler’s owner communications, including four-color magazines, newsletters and direct mail packages that no one in their right mind would describe as “junk mail.” However, his proudest achievement came during the year he worked on the Gulfstream Aerospace account and designed a nine-part mail program to sell the Gulfstream IV, a $25 million business jet, to the 2,000 known prospects for it in the world. The sale of seven airplanes were attributed to the program. It garnered for Dave and the team who worked on it, a Gold Echo award from the Direct Marketing Association of America. As his career wound down, Dave worked on Ford at J. Walter Thompson and Mazda at W.B. Doner. A 40-year career in advertising ended with eight years as co-owner of his own “shop,” Bulldog ’n’ Buck Communications. In retirement, Dave expressed his artistic talents by exploring photography, making ceramics and creating illustrations with colored pencils. He and Diane loved to attend art fairs, sparking Dave's interest in creating unique, colorful, abstract pieces of lacquered acrylics on wood--made to look like framed ceramic tiles--which he and Diane sold at art fairs while traveling around Michigan. Dave is survived by his wife, Diane; children Michael (Katie) and Marci Frederickson (Roy); three grandchildren—Brett, Megan and Ziggy Moon; and sister Linda Patton (Arnold). His family and close friends will remember Dave as the creative, strong, supportive rock of the family who never turned down a dessert in his life. Those who worked with him will remember Dave Patton for his extraordinary design talent and the fact that he didn’t suffer fools.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for friends and family on August 9, 2023, at Wind + James, 555 E. Eliza St., Schoolcraft, MI 49087. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Michigan Parkinson's Foundation (parkinsonsmi.org (http://parkinsonsmi.org/)
