Luster Dawn felt kind of bad about blowing up at her dads that night. It was true that she DID need to set some boundaries, she wasn’t a little filly after all. But even she had to admit that yelling at them was a little much. At least she’d get to apologize and talk to them about it when they got back from their business trip.

For now, though, her grandparents had come over to spend time with her for the weekend. She mostly only saw her Nana, Gramma, and Grampa on holidays and special occasions only, but “just because” seemed to be the occasion for now. Not that she minded too much.

Her Nana Stellar Flare leaned over her shoulder as she studied.

“I heard you’ve been learning some new spells in school! Do you mind telling me about them?”

“We heard from the grapevine that you’re studying under Queen Twilight! That’s a really big honor!”

Gramma Honey Bee chimed in from across the room.

“Put in a good word for us, will you?”

Honey nudged her husband, Ironwing, playfully as he said this.

“You’re just looking to get pardoned!”

This was the same overbearing behavior that Luster had gotten angry at her dads for, so she was a little peeved that her grandparents were doing it too. But she didn’t have to deal with them very often so for now the least she could do was entertain them.

“I’m not studying under her yet, I still have a couple years to go and more exams to prepare for. But hopefully I will. Right now I’m just learning basic transformation spells, like turning apples into oranges.”

But her grandparents still acted like she was already studying under royalty.

“That’s wonderful dear! You were always such a smart cookie!” 

Stellar pinched her cheek.

Luster tried to play along.

“Well thanks, I’m going to try to perfect the apples-to-oranges spell so I can show my dads when they get home.”

There was a sudden shift in the room as she said this, the faces of all three of her grandparents dimming as if their smiles were masks falling off.

Stellar put on another smile which seemed a lot more forced.

“I’m sure they’ll love it...!”

Honey suddenly broke out into sobbing.

“Oh, I can’t take this anymore! Your parents aren’t coming back, Luster! They’re dead!”

“Honey, you weren’t supposed to tell her that!”

Stellar’s own eyes filled with tears as she pulled Luster into a desperate embrace.

“I’m so sorry, baby.”

Luster’s eyes were still dry. She was shocked. Was she hearing this right? Were they really...?

“W-what? How? When?”

Ironwing cleared his throat, delivering an explanation through his own tears.

“We found out last night. There...there was an accident. An avalanche. It took out the whole crew, including...”

He stopped, unable to go on.

Stellar shot a tearful glare at Honey and Iron.

“You two should be ashamed of yourselves! She wasn’t ready! WE weren’t ready!”

Luster barely listened to this exchange, she barely felt their attempts to comfort her. Instead those two horrible words kept ringing in her ears.

They’re dead.

They’re dead.

They’re dead.

It's 110 days until my birthday. I cannot balance competing priorities, but I can damn sure try. Also, I'm starting an audio and video production company that churns out only one show - mine. We get to told to put on a "Brave" face. But sometimes the bravest thing is to take the face off.

While I do agree that the four options which are cleaning up, as of the 90th vote so far, would all be highly prudish - though the resilient Dwarves and Hobbits could block it out of their minds if they really had no choice but to expose themselves - I do have some opinions on the three others which had received some vote at this time:

I don't think the Ents would be prudish about it, per se, but I can see them taking an observational intrigue in the concept of clothing oneself vs being in the buff. Cue a 50-thousand year debate on why so many races put value on wearing processed plant and animal matter overtop of their natural forms.

The Orcs might seem to be okay with nudity, by proxy, but their stance on it would likely come with caveats. An Orc finds attractive what they find attractive, but they are all too aware of how hideous 99.085% of the population of Middle Earth considers them to be, so while they'll braveface and act defiant if one of the so-called "fair" sorts of creatures happens across them au naturel, all they want is to disappear. (Maybe Frodo could lend them a little something and help them out? By which I mean clothes, not that evil little band or anything...)

And now we come to my own vote, this round. I'll learn more about the Maiar/Valar once I finally grind it out, back to front, with my Silmarillion copy, but I do seem to recall that Gandalf seemed to speak with distaste about being naked after regrowing from his fight with Durin's Bane. So we therefore know that at least one of the Maiar really does not like a lack of clothes.

So, that's my little TED-talk, this time.

Or, to put the question another way, who is most likely to hang back in embarrassment while the rest of the Fellowship cheerfully strips to bathe in a river?
