RENFIELD (2023)

Cute little quirky film with Nicholas Hoult, Nick Cage, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz. Unique concept to focus on the familiar and not the vampire!

We meet Renfield, Dracula's unfortunate familiar who is long ready for a break. Too bad Drac is not done with him. Renfield goes to a support group for people in controlling relationships and so far all he really does is use it to target bad people to bring Dracula to eat. Bugs are what give Ren his special powers (his Dracula powers) but it can be any bug, it doesn’t have to be a bug Dracula gave him. Either way Ren gets tied up with a notorious crime family and the police with his latest kill which is very bad because he wants to stay low key, what is also bad is that Dracula is now deciding he wants to try to take over the world which is not low key at all. Renfield is stressed.

Around now the Lobo crime family tries to take out Awkwafina the police officer but thanks to Renfield and his bugs the day is saved. This puts a big target on his back though. Dracula is also demanding more innocent flesh from Ren and this is really getting to him. He finally decides to just stop and move out, get a place of his own, his help group encourages him, he buys a sweater, things are looking up! He is crushing bad on Copwafina and goes to give her his statement. While that goes down, Ben Schwartz as Little Lobo goes to visit Dracula and things are brewing there. Drac doubles back to tell off Renfield but finds out about his support group and rips them all to shreds. Copwafina comes to arrest Renfield who obviously did the crime but the crooked cops are ready to hand him over to the Lobo crime family, good thing Awkwfina recklessly drives away!

Back at Dracula's place, a deal is forming with Little Lobo. Renfield admits everything to Copwafina and she accepts it pretty fast (good for her) and then there is a big action sequence in the apartment courtyard. Pretty rad. Next Little Lobo brings Daddy Drac home to show his mama. She is very impressed. Especially since her little boy is now Dracula's familiar. They kidnap Copwafina's sister and hold her hostage to lure Renfield and Copwafina, which works. More action ensues, a big choice is given to Awkwa, will she become a familiar too? No! She opens the curtains on that vampire! Then they make a protection circle out of cocaine which was wack and a half. They beat Drac to death and then make him into little cement ice cubes and bury him. Seems good enough. And then they use his magic blood to bring back everyone from the self help circle which was very nice of them!
