Victor Hugo Poem Discovered in a Statue:

Article from the New York Times about a long lost poem by Victor Hugo which was uncovered in a statue in Boulogne-sur-Mer of Napoleon. The statue was taken down for repairs of wartime damage in 1959. After taking it down, they discovered a parchment that had been wedged in the base of the statue. It was an unpublished poem written by Hugo in 1841.

Napoleon I was a hero of Hugo’s and the subject of many of his literary works. This poem was specifically meant to be read at the dedication of the statue, but due to its strong anti-English sentiment, King Louis-Philippe refused to let it be read since he didn’t want to strain relations with England. Hugo’s feelings were wounded. Confronted with being unable to share it, he decided to deposit the composition in the base of the statue, where it would be found 118 years later.
