#Book vs. adaptation

Many attempts to adapt classic novels are lackluster, at best. Two films, however, that always instantly surface in my mind outshine their source material and, interestingly enough, they both star Spencer Tracy: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Captain's Courageous. While I did enjoy The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I can't deny that its film adaptation explores its themes further and, if I may be so bold, better. Captain's Courageous, on the other hand, is not a good book, and its film adaptation clearly knew what needed to be changed to make it work. If you haven't yet, you should definitely give them both a watch.

genuinely still baffled by the "they don't need to address Mike's sexuality, all that matters is that he's in love with Will" crowd. especially when people say it who claim to care about Mike's character (when you could also just say you don't really care for that part of the show, which would be fine, no one cares about all characters/arcs)
because Surely you realize how him being gay or bi would change his entire character, right. whether he's attracted to girls or not would change the way all his actions up until now are to be interpreted. not even making a statement on his sexuality here, this is generally speaking
if he was actually attracted to El you'd have to address when and why he suddenly stopped loving El since in fiction "it just happened" isn't usually a satisfying answer to breaking a multi season couple up. Why is Will it for him? he's been acting weird for ages so when did he realize? and what made it click he fell out of love with El for good? you'd have to give some explanation for why he was able to proclaim his love for El accidentally in s3 and then fail to do it in the same season while looking uncomfortable with kissing her and so on since his pov was so majorly withheld
if he's not attracted to girls his arc in s5 needs to focus more on comphet and how dating El affected him/why he felt he couldn't break up with her/homophobic attitude in his surrounding slash Hawkins. or the idea of platonic and romantic love in general. there would be no how he got from point A(El) to point B(Will), like what the focus of a bi!Mike s5 arc would have to be on to explain what happened, but a focus on how he ended up at point A in the first place and why he was stuck there/how it affected him
and even core moments of the series would have entirely different meanings depending on if he's attracted to girls. "it's not my fault you don't like girls" being a peak example. if he's gay it's easy to explain it with projection. if he IS attracted to girls though it would read as a much more intentional (even if blurted out) act of homophobia, since it would be him pointing something out that Will genuinely does (not liking being around girls) but he himself can't relate to
and that's all just the surface level differences. Mike being attracted to girls or not being attracted to girls would give his arc an entirely different focus in s5. AS WELL as make his past actions have entirely different meanings. the idea that "it doesn't matter for his character" is so insanely wrong it's wild how many people confidently peddle it

I've seen a ton of people saying they can't check out the book or find it because its in high demand. So I figured I'd leave this totally very legal copy of the first edition (with bonus special edition chapter) of a totally popular and gay book lying around, in case, you know, anyone needed it.
happy reading yall!

i've seen some talk about how it's out of character for mat to react positively to being a hero of the horn. you have to remember that show!mat is in a VASTLY different emotional place than book!mat, due in large part to the changes necessitated by barney leaving. if mat had gone with them all to fal dara, participated in the battle there, gone on the hunt, and not had a whole arc of thinking he's a shit friend and person, then sure, maybe he would be in a position to go "ugh! i don't want to be a hero of the horn! this sucks!"
but instead, mat's been beaten down and had his self-worth completely crushed. he thinks he's a worthless piece of shit who was a worthless piece of shit in all his past lives and will be a worthless piece of shit in all his future lives. so when he finds out he's actually a hero of the horn? yeah, he reacts positively! it's a much-needed moment of validation for him, a realization that maybe he CAN be a good person (and it's also a much-needed moment of positive catharsis for the audience, after a pretty heavy season). book!mat was never in an emotional position like that, and so he would never have had a reaction like that.
so yeah, show!mat IS quite emotionally different than book!mat at this point. some of the change was pre-planned (the backstory they gave him) and some really, really wasn't. but they've rolled with the changes to show!mat and are keeping him an emotionally realistic character in his own right, rather than trying to shove a square peg into a round hole by giving him book!mat behavior that wouldn't fit with the development he's had in this version.
they're keeping the "hero who says he's not a hero" vibes, but where the books leaned on "he doesn't WANT to be a hero (because it's too much work and too dangerous)", the show is leaning on "he doesn't think he CAN be a hero (because his self-worth is so low)". there's no denying this is a change, and i can see why that bothers people (especially longtime readers; *i* met show!mat first), but i for one think it's actually a good change that makes mat, to me, a more realistic and grounded character and a more likable and mature person.
plus, this is only season 2 and so much of the season was spent on getting mat back on track to where he needs to be for season 3 after season 1 forced a complete rewrite of his season 2 story. there's every possibility he might develop a more complex relationship with heroism later on as the story gets darker and the stakes get higher.

Leftist video essay be like
Bisexual millennial: Here's how Home 2015 fails as adaptation of The True Meaning of Smek Day.
*they do a plot summary of both the book and movie that eats up 80 minutes while discussing there differences*
Bisexual millennial: There's a lot to unpack
*continues discussing the book and movie for two more hours while going off topic with multiple tangents of them talking about increasingly barely or not connected at all subjects like: Marxism, respectability politics, Of Mice and Men, the Iranian Hostage crisis, Taylor Swift, kink In pride, death of the author, etc*
I watch this video at least twice because it's entertaining and educating.

I am of the camp where i watched the Ghibli movie of Howl's Moving Castle (mainly in Japanese but I've watched the English dub too) lots but I'm only just getting around to reading/listening to the book right now.
This experience is confirming my MO of always watching the movie before reading the book because this is hilarious. I saw someone on here call howl a "sopping wet drama queen of a cat" and every page i read basically confirms this lol
For a person who grew up both English and Japanese, it's also hilarious to see how the book (with its very realistic portrayal of sniveling complaining Brits but somehow placed in a compelling story and the world is full of magical versions of people that i knew growing up. all very nostalgia inducing to me) was transformed into a romanticised Ghibli-ized lovely cosy story with less snot and whinging(our national pastime you know). Because in my experience this is how much of Europe (remember the Japanese tourists despairing in Paris?) and definitely how the UK is romanticised by Japanese people.

Based on, adapted, changes made etc. And it's allowed to happen. If people are mad or offended about characters getting cut/changes being made with book to movie adaptations, I hate to tell you that this isn't the first time it's ever happened.

Alex steps out next, swaggering up beside Henry and throwing an arm over his shoulders. “Act like you like me!” Alex says cheerfully. Henry looks at him like he’s trying to choose between a million choice words, before tipping his head to the side and offering up a well-rehearsed laugh, putting his arm around Alex too. “There we go.”
Tumblr media
Alex watches the introductions backstage as a makeup artist conceals a stress pimple on his forehead. So, this is happening. He tries to ignore Henry a few feet to his left, currently getting a final preening from a royal stylist. It’s the last chance he’ll get to ignore Henry for the rest of the day.
Tumblr media
Henry sits on the prop couch next to him, perfect posture, and Alex smiles at him, making a show of looking comfortable in Henry’s company. Which is harder than it should be...
Tumblr media
He realizes, almost a second too late, that Dottie is asking him a question. “What do you think of jolly old England, then, Alex?” Dottie says, clearly ribbing him. Alex forces a smile.
Tumblr media
“You know, Dottie, it’s gorgeous,” Alex says. “I’ve been here a few times since my mom got elected, and it’s always incredible to see the history here, and the beer selection.”
Tumblr media
The audience laughs right on cue, and Alex shakes out his shoulders a little. “And of course, it’s always great to see this guy.” He turns to Henry, extending his fist. Henry hesitates before stiffly bumping his own knuckles against Alex’s with the heavy air of an act of treason.

my only general predictions for jjk is that Yuuji will be able to target the different souls in Sukuna’s body to be able to reach Megumi’s suppressed soul and attack sukuna’s. Im actually interested in how this will all go down, especially with Higuruma in the mix, since these fights can’t be as simple as two overpowered characters with the loss of multiple special grade sorcerers. With the potential of a court trial domain or Yuuji’s knowledge of the soul, I imagine it’ll become more psychological or metaphysical in the fighting, with a lot of good insight into sukuna and/or yuuji, megumi, etc. As for Kenjaku, I have NO idea where their story is going (apart from Yuuta wanting to kill them), but i enjoy that part of the story being unpredictable—it fits their character
