Typography Tuesday
American Type Founders (ATF), established in 1892 with the merger of 23 type foundries, was the predominant producer of metal type in America for the first 50 years of its existence, and remained influential in the industry almost until its closing in the early 1990s. In its heyday, this conglomeration of foundries produced about 85 percent of all type manufactured in the United States at the time. As a behemoth type manufacturer, it also had most of the nation's top type designers producing original typefaces for the foundry, including Will Bradley, Frederic Goudy, Oz Cooper, T.M. Cleland, and the prolific Morris Fuller Benton, who was also the head of the ATF design department.
This ATF type specimen book, Book of American Types, published in 1934 presents some of the "Standard Types" offered by ATF. As the Preface notes:
During the last decade there has been a period of experimental effort in typography the influence of which at times has carried us a long way from the traditional past. . . . No type specimen book can ever be complete in the strictest sense. As printing proceeds, new designs enter the early stages of preparation. Alphabets from leading artists and from our own pre-eminent staff of designers are being continually studied in the effort to anticipate style trends. . . . Change is inherent in progress and every effort will be made to have these separate specimens reflect the most recent trends while at all times maintaining the highest typographic standards.
This statement, along with the title and the name of the corporation, place an emphasis on the spirit of progressivism during the interwar period, as well as the exceptionalism of American initiative and design. But as the display of the Broadway Series of type (designed by Benton in the late 1920s) reminds us, "Herds Ignore Granted Delusions." Our copy of Book of American Types is another donation from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick.

my attempts to avoid thoughts of geralt's hanza continue to fail, as sapkowski talks about them in front of my face.
(from manuscript, on the subject of the hero and the quest):
On this expedition, the Hero (Simple or King) is accompanied by others who are stereotypical-canonical fantasy characters, in other words - clichés:
Wizard-Mentor (the aforementioned MERLIN, Obi-wan Kenobi, Gandalf, Allanon, Belgarath, Sephrenia or Moiraine, who supports the hero with advice and help); Faithful Servant (in the case of the King, literally, in the case of the Simple, rather a childhood friend, Sam Gamgee. He serves the plot to recite wise folk maxims and prove that the simple people are the most morally healthy; or to save the ass of his master/friend where magic and a sharp sword will not help, and common sense and a strong, faithful arm will suffice). Good Knight (charismatic LANCELOT, always loyal and ready to fight, sometimes with some dark secret in his life); Worse Knight (always with some dark secret in his life, ambitious like Boromir, in the clutches of Evil, secretly collaborates with Evil, regrets betrayal, undergoes catharsis, perishes); Trickster - Conniver (see LOKI in "Materia Magiczna"**), cheerful, but can cause trouble, which attracts like a magnet; Damsel in Distress, who is saved from danger on the way and included in the team. Usually a princess in disguise. For several volumes of the cycle she does not like the Hero, in the last she becomes his wife.
* Type A = Percival, a hero who does not have power and is searching it, and Type B = King Arthur, a hero who has lost his power and wants to regain it. in other words, Type A = Reynevan and Type B = Geralt :)
** another chapter of the book, "Materia magica, or the Little Magical Alphabetical Lexicon," it's a glossary of various myth and legend. in loki's entry, he recounts some myths of loki and equivalates him with other figures across various traditions: Odysseus, Pryderi, Bricriu, Mordred, Alyosha Popovich, Coyote, Anansi, Maui). then he lists a few fantasy/spec fic characters he categorizes as trickers: Cugel (Dying Earth), Kickaha (World of Tiers), Coyote (Coyote Blue), Peter Lake (Winter's Tale), Moonglum (Elric of Melniboné), Nifft and Haldar (Nifft the Lean), Random (Chronicles of Amber), Saruman (Lord of the Rings), Shimrod (Lyonesse), Silk (The Belgariad and The Malloreon), Gray Mouser (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser), Talen (The Elenium).
my thoughts:
pretty obvious assignments here, for the most part.
regis is the Wizard-Mentor, but, as he soon loses his mystique, his intellectual, philosophizing manner becomes mundane and irritating than providing magical provenance. he advises incessantly, answering questions before they're asked, giving guidance when no one asked. he only appears to be omniscient, and the others may think he's so smart because he's hundreds of years older than them, but is really just a guy, a middle aged man with a troubled youth which he learned from. his advice is not magically guided and for this reason is fallable, mortal, human. maybe the cliché is also played with in that he's a vampire, not a wizard, sorcerer, or priest, "‘I see.’ The poet sighed. ‘Is Regis a sorcerer?’ ‘No. No, not a sorcerer.’" ... as vampires are typically evil and regis is decidedly a force of good. (on this topic, @wampirzielarz once compared-contrasted gandalf and regis and it was super interesting :))
dandelion is a combination of the Faithful Servant and the Trickster. he's geralt's best friend, and doesn't fight alongside him with sword but his presence is necessary to our hero for moral support, that all makes the first part an obvious assignment... and... sapkowski lists a wide variety of tricksters of various moral alignments, but amongst them are some heroes and some best friends of heroes (and anti-heroes). and asides from being geralt's closest friend, dandelion is, after all, a rascal, who uses words and good looks to get what he wants from people. "a cynic, a lecher, a womanizer and a liar." (also, because i think szarlej also fits this double-definition as well, i won't hesitate to give them to dandelion, as they serve pretty similar functions alongside their respective heroes).
milva is the Good Knight, "always loyal and ready to fight" describes her perfectly, and her 'dark secret' was her pregnancy and plans for abortion. (though, the attribution of lancelot... well, maybe this is why some keen eyes saw a potential in yenva). anyhow, the playfulness with the cliché comes from the fact that she's a woman, which is supposed to be surprising that the hero's strongest ally is a woman. i think the "charismatic" attribute is also supposed to be played with here, as milva is simple and not too well-spoken, only so in her cursing. in other words, she's a peasant woman, and not a born-and-bred nobleman. also, for her gender, she is a play on another trope sapkowski mentions a couple of pages later, but i can't go into it now because it's too funny.
cahir is the Worse Knight, though perhaps in reverse, for all of his associations with Evil was in the past and shed like sports colors when he changed teams. he has no betrayal, "I will never betray you, witcher," all of his ‘betrayal’ was before he was even allied with the hero. but of course, for these sins, he "undergoes catharsis, perishes".
the Damsel in Distress is evidentially angouleme, being "saved from danger on the way and included in the team." the rebuking of the cliché, of course, is that geralt is "genuinely angry, genuinely confused, genuinely embarrassed" when she offers her "gratitude" to him. also, that she is no princess in disguise, just an ordinary girl, though she is confused for the princess they're after (who also happens to be another play on the damsel in distress cliché). and again, like milva, i think angouleme is related to another specifically female character cliché sapkowski calls out; but i'll save it for another post.
#btw this is also why i feel laurence fishburne was incredibly typecast as regis#although i don't want to discuss n*tflix i just wanted to mention that yes that is regis' character trope. morpheus morbius#the interesting part about regis (and all of them. every witcher character ever) is that he breaks his trope and#creates unexpected situations and moments which are very enjoyable#the witcher books#f: a hansa's a hansa#book: manuscript discovered in a dragon's cave#i'm really trying to save my commentary for videos but i just cant not share this i love the hanza too much!!#asides from that it is indeed a really helpful guide to the genre#sapkowski going on about this makes me feel a bit like when a dad shows you wallet pictures of his kids#like 'this one's ashley - she's 8 and on the soccer team'#'geralt is a type b hero - king arthur category - and he's also a play on the 'superman' american tradition of heroes'#anyways [looks up moonglum] [third google result: DOES ELRIC AND MOONGLUM ARE GAY?] 'yep the definition fits dandelion'

Speaking of Raffles, if anyone* would like to be cursed with a basic understanding of cricket, may I recommend this blog post: Cricket for Americans - a primer
*You will need a basic understanding of baseball, but when I say basic, I mean “played kickball as a child”, “able to identify which one is the pitcher and which one is the first baseman”, “can tell when a home run just happened”. My own baseball knowledge is so sketchy I was trying to remember how many innings there are in a game and could only get to “pretty sure it’s either seven or nine”, and yet I read the linked post and now I can more or less follow what’s going on in fictional cricket scenes. You may or may not want this - not gonna lie, it’s removed some of the mystique - but the option is open.
#letters from bunny#i’ll also tag#letters regarding jeeves#it’s less relevant to the Jeeves books but in case you move on to other Wodehouse#tumblr would go wild for the Psmith books and they’re chock full of cricket#American or not if you’ve never played a baseball/kickball/softball/teeball-type game this probably won’t help much#but if you have then here it is#and you too can suddenly follow the action in that one chapter of Murder Must Advertise

I realized my disconnect when it comes to talking about one piece, and why I always say I like talking to dudebros more even if they're the worst... Is, I like to analyze literature. I like to analyze the source material and the canonic information. Shipping and stuff is for fun but I see it separately. The intersect bc canon inspires fanon but fanon CANNOT change canon.. I don't mix the two things especially not when I'm doing analysis... So I'll say things that are factual and ppl who are stuck in their headcanons or personal biases will think I'm saying something bad. What I'm saying isn't good or bad. It's not judgmental of the character I'm talking about. Nor is it a bias bc I like them/dislike them. I'm analyzing odas writing and his intentions as an author and what he's trying to say and portray. Most ppl online are too caught up in headcanons and personal bias while having no media comprehension and they think that I'm attacking their made up fanon stuff..... Noooo..... You're over there playing pretend and I'm over here doing analysis. We are not doing remotely near the same activity. They don't always need to intersect. Anyways it's hard to have genuine analytical conversations with ppl fully indulged in fandom and fanon. The only group of ppl who doesn't do that are dudebros but also... They get hung up on other stuff that doesn't matter too. Idkkkkkkkkk.
#ppl have said im an irl bootlicker bc i like garp#and that i think sabo is a horrible person and hate him bc i said hes a terrorist#garp is an amazingly written character#he has so much purpose and nuance#ace was used as a plot device to further his and luffys story#period#idc how much any of u like ace that doesnt wash away the intentions of the author#sabo IS a terrorist. by definition. so is luffy.#thats not me saying i hate them#canonically in the one piece universe#they commit acts of terror on large governing systems#luffy has left countries destroyed and in lawlessness bc they no longer have a governing system to oversee them#and just like most americans#theyd rather live in comfortable ignorance than be extremist and change the situation#and guess who takes care of them after luffy does this? not luffy#the marines.#oda is writing a story thats way too fucking smart for some of you#performative activist types who cant even fathom reading anarchy or history books#some of you have no ability to comprehend media in the least bit#im just tired of me analyzing media and ppl with peanut brains getting offended bc i said something factual and truthful#about their fave#when what I'm saying was fully intended to come across that way by the author#dont come and play dolls all over my analysis

maybe i should have gone into practical effects instead of computer science...
#when i was in middle school i used to use red and black pens + spit for blending to make it look like the backs of my hands were torn open#i can't believe it's almost 4am. i just spent 5 hours typing up an essay about MM's erik that i just fuckin privated bc i was embarrassed#AND I STILL NEVER SPELL HIS NAME RIGHT THE FIRST TIME AAAAAAAA#i was right but im going to save all my points for the fanfic im currently planning out and promptly NEVER GOING TO ACTUALLY WRITE#I say shoving my plans for my h2o s3 rewrite off the table#yes i skipped from s2 to s3 i had a BRILLIANT idea [season 3 h2o spoilers ahead be wary my mutuals who are still watching]#okay so you know how lewis goes to the american institute of marine bio in the middle of 3? since this is tied to my s2 rewrite fic i wante#to actually finally reasonably re-introduced dr denman to the story because i never liked that she just fucked off at the end of s1#despite WITNESSING the moon pool magic. so i made it so she runs into lewis while doing a presentation for the college and they have a chat#(because her JAW paper plays an important part in my s2 rewrite bc i imagine lewis is the kind of guy who SAYS he deleted every copy of#it... but ACTUALLY he secretly printed himself out a copy to study in private to compare to his own notes bc#[lewis voice] come *on* guys just THINK of the progress that he could make with this! [grabby hands in front of chest])#so yeah they have a chat and Linda kind of gives Lewis the opposite dilemma in s3 that Louise gives him in s1 about science and magic#since SHE knows about the moon pool and has been biding her time and she knows Lewis knows and Lewis is like ah... uh oh.#it will eventually tie into the idea it's not about forcing science and magic together or separating them#its abt respectfully and responsibly utilizing both to see their fullest potential. which lewis learned in s2 and Linda has... not.#BUT#later on she gets a call from 1 (one) ryan who is like 'hey so i heard u did environmental studies on mako for dr bennett a couple years ag#and i was wondering if you've seen anything weird there as im currently doing a-' and she's immediately like 'YOU SON OF A BITCH IM IN'#and he's like 'wha-' and she's like 'i have already booked my plane tickets we're going to have a great time we have lots to talk about :)'#and wheeee now they have someone who knows about mermaids on their team and it's the perfect way to bring lewis back to relevancy in s3 :D#it also gives me reason to have two bad bitches (linda and sophie) meet and get to know each other which is not a dynamic ive seen in#any of the H2O fics i've ever read so im very hyped to delve into how they'll play off each other#also charlotte is there so technically three bad bitches (only in my au Charlotte never lost her tail and is part of the gang she just move#because she felt like she needed to leave to really be able to find herself without being in her grandmother's shadow but she comes back bc#well... it's season 3 mako is sounding the fucking emergency alarms everyone is showing up sdkghkfjhg)#im also so so so hyped to show u guys who's coming back in the s2 rewrite because it ISNT denman and i think everyone thinks it will be :3c#(i said she when telling ppl to look forward to a familiar face... but can u blame me for getting hype she's one of my favorite characters!#i love u H2O#cruddy rambles

It's Fine Press Friday!
This week we present another book from the estate of the late Dennis Bayuzick: Powerdog, a children’s story based on a public television documentary explaining the importance of horses for the Dakota-Nakota-Lakota people. The book was written and printed by Polly B. Johnson at her Press of the Unseen Unicorn in San Antonio, Texas, in an edition of 50 copies.
The book explains the mythical origin of horses according to the aforementioned Native American people. Their word for horse translates into “something like 'power-dog'” according to the author. The story tells of the people who were forced to kill their dog companions to eat due to a lack of food in the harsh winter, and how a boy begged the Great Holy Spirit to prevent his dog from becoming food. When he awoke, his dog was transformed into a horse that helped him herd buffalo back to his home and end the practice of eating dogs.
The edition was printed on Masa paper using the Verona type with reduction linocut illustrations. The cover is made of Larroque Mouchette paper with flecks of paper pulp.

you guys… we did it!!!
just wanted to thank you everyone for being a part of this blog… “big things to come soon”
#i am proud and happy about it because this blog came from my moving blogs in 2021#and on my past blog i had about 1000 followers so it’s like i finally regained that reach#which i’m specifically excited by because this blog (contrary to my previous one) is ONLY about the witcher books with no n*tflix talk#like ik ohhh ‘you are a fandom blog you have no rights’ but it makes me happy that we’re all gathered here together for the same thing :)#i don’t think fandom has to be an inherently toxic or immature space i think it can be a meaningful place of discussion and participation#the elbow-high diaries#updates#it’s kind of an interesting thing the witcher books fandom in english in the 2020s i am really very curious where it goes from here#it’s interesting to me because it’s such a specific and unique situation of media spread#it’s not like the witcher is unpopular or indie—it’s extremely popular. a mass pop culture phenomenon#at the same time the english-speaking (and in my case specifically american) fandom is primarily built around tw3 and then now n*tflix#even if the books were read and successful in the english market i mean they did not have the same kind of cultural impact#so it’s particularly of interest to me to boost visibility and yes indeed—fandom—conversation around the witcher books#and for me i like thinking through what that looks like—#an english-speaking (including not limited to american) fandom without anglifying or americanizing it#or at the very least *trying* to not anglify or americanize it. because some amount of it is unintentional yet necessary (i.e. translation)#but even in translation for example. the kind of translation and how it’s gone about. there is potential for cultural learning and#the most faithful translations will not make total sense so as the readers you go and look for that context and learn something#all part of a larger discussion and i kind of got lost typing these tags but this is why this milestone is special to me#it shows that people are interested in what this blog posts about and that means we have a future to explore

look i know hamlet is like, one of the most famous pieces of literature of all time, and so i shouldn't really be surprised to see it referenced in places, but you kind of expect certain bits to be more likely to pop up than others right? but then sometimes you're reading a memoir for class and you get to this:
and you just go. oh. the me of a month ago wouldn't have known this, but.
#hamlet#the book is#the year of magical thinking#which as far as i can tell does not feature any other hamlet references (other than bringing this one back again on the last page)#again for my postmodern american lit class#by now i have officially become a hamlet poster. i heartily apologize to everyone who didn't come here for this#i am just not the type of person who can get involved in a theater thing and not have it eat my brain

Speaking of book recommendations, I just finished reading "Annapolis Autumn: Life, Death, And Literature At The U.S. Naval Academy" by Bruce E. Fleming (he was/is a teacher at the Acedemy) and I thought it was interesting. It gives a glimpse at some workings of the academy but also what is like to be a civilian in a military environment specially when one doesn't exactly drink from the same kool aid (hope that's how the expression works, I'm not American)
i will look into it!! But now i get nervous reading about the usna because i don’t wanna know how inaccurate my portrayal of it is. Lmfao. Posting for the rec
#will read it someday maybe#when my reading list isn’t ten kabajillion books long#sounds interesting for like Charlie’s perspective too#civilian contractor type beat#That’s pretty much the saying btw 👍🏽 jonestown massacre reference#it’s not American it’s Guyanese#or at least Jonestown happened in guyana#not top gun#book rec#when i was abroad last week i had a two-night stand with a kid who did a wrestling camp with the SEALs at the USNA#he showed me videos on his phone and it was. Uh. the most hellish possible thing i can imagine#SEALs kicking down your door at 4 am for drills#wild hazing rituals#straight lying to kids for psychological torture#anyway#a girl i know her boyfriend just got into the USNA and she was like ‘so i should break up with him right’ and we were all like ‘…yeah…’#does not sound fun but that’s my limited experience of it

It's really funny writing a fantasy series because everyone else has maps that I will go absolutely batshit insane over because they're so gorgeous and detailed-
And this is my baby. Courtesy of Paint. Feast your eyes on my VERY DETAILED WIP map for my Seven Sanctuaries series:
#listen listen i'm doing so much research into legends/monsters in Mexican Haitian African-American American-local & Indigenous mythologies#as well as some more world-building than normal#but this map is hot garbage and I love it so much#hopefully there's one book for each of the 7 Sanctuaries although some are literally a single page of bullet points at this point#my writing#writing process#fantasy#urban fantasy#also please if anyone sees something that was not translated right please tell me#debating eliminating Thunderbird Corridor as I do more research for that one! but it won't be relevant until at least the third book#the order should be: Hotel Cudoviste La Cuna Hueco Mauna Moehaune Nich Bondye Santa Muerte The Wandering Isle World's End#in order the premises are:#magic hotel with a murder mystery going on#underground tunnel city + cowboys who ride unicorns + a dragon whose hoard is literally video games#overthrow/prison break of a prison in a volcano#atlantis-type city + pirates + Haitian Revolution#gothic girl in a tower whose hemophilia + healing makes her a literal magical power cell + grim reaper (cantante de hueso) who saves her#island that literally moves around on its own + run by rednecks#and world's end is literally a lighthouse BUT the needle is a pillar of magic that literally repels magical creatures#map#writing fantasy
