Phil Lesh & Friends Harp on “Darkstar” in Latest “Darkstarathon”

- Mikaela Davis brings classical flourishes to episode 8

Phil Lesh’s latest group of Friends makes no effort to sound like the Grateful Dead in episode 8 of “Darkstarathon,” though the spirit of the bassist’s former band is etched in the sonic cosmos.

Featuring harpist Mikaela Davis and augmented by fellow classical musician Holly Bowling (keys), guitarists Grahame Lesh and Stu Allen and drummer Nathan Graham, the latest exploration finds the band nosing around the gurgling edges of sound for 10-plus minutes before the titular theme emerges. As the band picks up steam and aural light flies by, Grahame Lesh steps to the mic … and sings “Dark Star” really poorly.

This is the only downer of the session as the collective engages in consonant meanderings that lead them through improvisations and parts of songs that demonstrate a sincere sense of adventurism rare in one-off groupings.

Here’s a ragged spoke of “The Wheel,” Davis’ vocals underpinning the attempted harmonies. There go the blues on the hopeful “New Speedway Boogie” coda.

One verse of “Cold Rain and Snow.” A thunder crack of energy. Dissolution and reconstruction for a wordless drive with “St. Stephen.” And Davis struggling to recall the words to “Mountains of the Moon” before the music gently floats back down like a feather to Terrapin Clubhouse and the earth on which it sits.

Lesh the elder often talks of searching for the sound. This time around, he and his pals went looking for the ethos that produced said sound. And they found it.

• Idc what y’all say, this man is OBSESSED with Funko Pops.

• Honestly, I feel that he’s well aware of the fact that he has an interest for collector’s items.

• Bro.. he would squeal if you took him to places like HMV or Hot Topic.

• When he was informed that the Video Store (his workplace) would begin to sell some Funkos of infamous movie characters since that was literally the whole theme of the place, he died off. HE. DIED. OFF.

• Billy and Stu have occasionally dropped by to rent some more horror movies, also teasing him about the pops and telling the whole store it was a.. kink? More Stu’s bad way of putting it, shall we say..

“Can you take their clothes off?” Stu asked curiously.

Randy began to get flustered as Stu proceeded to take the small statue out of the box, knowing he’d get another harsh telling off if his boss found out it was Randy’s “friends” ruining stock.

“They’re plastic dumbass,” Billy remarked. “It’s practically molded onto their figure.”

“Can you guys please sto-”

Stu snorted. “Well you can take the clothes off Barbie dolls and shit like that, can’t you? They even have parts.. uh- you know?”

“Wha- no, these aren’t like that-”

Randy was cut off once again as Billy spoke up and wrinkled his nose in disgust at the taller male. “You really stripped the clothes off of dolls just to investigate when you were a kid?”

Randy and Billy both shared the same look as Stu grinned wickedly.

And then it came. “Don’t ask questions you already know the answer to.” Yep. Classic Stu.

• Wherever this mf goes, he always ends up eating a bag of potato chips. Nor you or his friends know where he pulls them from, but he does, he just does..

BILLY

• There is so much I could say about Billy Boy here..

(He’d most likely tell you to go fuck yourself if you called him that. Well, depending on who you are lmao)

• If you are the kind of person who loves that shitty trending pop music, you are probably better off hanging out with Stu for the day. Because Billy HATES it.

• He’s not particularly into heavy metal, i’d say more grunge. Stu bullies him for it but gets an ass whooping later so, eh.

• If he gets woken up in the middle of the night, he’s one cranky fucker about it. This man prioritises his sleep. He almost broke the cable to the house phone after Stu kept calling him one night, complaining on how he couldn’t sleep and that he wanted to go somewhere. After Billy not being able to get back into dreamland, he gave in. Pretty sure Stu ended up choosing the McDonald’s drive thru, much to Billy’s annoyance.

(That shit happens way too often but hey, who doesn’t like late night drives?)

• Billy wants a piercing but at the same time, he doesn’t? He’s not sure if he can really commit to it or not, but he does think people with piercings are cool!

• Plus his Dad would probably kick him out over something as stupid as that. Billy would just tell him to get bent either way lol.

• He can be quite a germaphobe. Sick people scare the living FUCK out of him.

• You have a cold? Aw, pity. DO. NOT. APPROACH. BILLY. LOOMIS.

• Stu accidentally sneezed on him once and Billy literally felt his heart stop. He showered about three times that day.. maybe more? Fuck knows, man.. 😭

MICKEY

• Something about him and the song Paparazzi.. IDK WHAT IT IS BUT IT JUST.. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

��� He’s very open about his opinions, as we all know. If you dissed his fav movie or TV show, bam bam bitch he’s gonna answer you and he ain’t gonna be so fucking nice about it.. 🫡

• Literal Beyoncé stan. I swear whenever her music is playing and y’all are at a party, he def wants to have a lil boogie with you.

• Mickey is the one person you know to have a weird, WEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIRRRRRD obsession with black coffee..

• Stu has the most ridiculous obsession with boobs. Randy now calls him the titty monster anytime Jamie Lee Curtis shows up in the horror movies they’re watching.

• He was BORN a dog lover.

• Annoys Billy anytime he gets a new girlfriend.

• I can picture him eating anything blue raspberry flavoured he can find. CANDY GOO, BLUE SOUR PATCH KIDS, YOU NAME IT😭😭

• Has the best snack cupboard no one else can compare to having in their house.

• He’s the kind of guy to stick his tongue out to kids in public just so he can get a giggle out of them!

• Loves it when him and the gang go out to the cinema. Which is more often than you’d expect.

Oh my gosh, he's all for it! He'll be up and dancing with you even. Is not afraid to sing the songs while you sit back and laugh at him. He just wants to make his girl laugh.

If you prefer rock, he's totally fine with that! He would call you a badass. Anything and everything you do will always have him in awe. There's nothing you could do to drive him away.

He wouldn't want to listen to country, though. He doesn't swing that way, it's not his style. Only for you would he listen to country. He might get down to Boot Scootin Boogie though..

Will play your favorite songs at house parties, and make sure everyone knows it. He just wants to show you off to the world. "You can look but you can't touch" kind of mindset.

His guilty pleasure song is for sure Mambo No. 5. He can't help but get up and dance every time it comes on.

Doesn't hate it, but he wouldn't 'enjoy it.' He's just kind of chill. He won't care the genre. As long as you're happy, he's happy. Anything to make his girl happy.

He wouldn't really get up and dance with you. It isn't his thing. But, he would tap his foot to the rhythm, just to let you know he's enjoying it.

Would invite Junior to come dance with you two. He knows Junior loves music more than most people.

My Corazon HC’s!! pt.4❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Inspired by my boyfriend, my dad, and my own imagination/knowledge of Corazon and Law

I think if Law’s parents and Corazon lived, his dad and Corazon would be having a barbecue and drinking beer. They’d be besties.

Lami would love Corazon.

Surprisingly, he’s listened to every single Led Zeppelin album growing up! His favorite album is Physical Graffiti. His top picks from the album are Houses of the Holy and Boogie with Stu.

His favorite Led Zeppelin song is The Ocean.

His favorite genre of YouTube video is the “Every time I get hit in Minecraft my computer is coded to generate 30 ender dragons” one. Not the theoretical videos like “Was Sans really just a skeleton?” Or “The dark secret behind Cardcaptor Sakura”, but like the ones where people mod the games or play games at an unplayable setting.

(And no. None of these are real videos LOL)

After a long day, sometimes Law will join him to watch like a historical documentary that might be a tad bit too graphic for Law. Corazon, passing out on the other couch, will just exclaim.

And immediately it’s some mildly grotesque image.

Law still looks and doesn’t even flinch. He doesn’t really care.

When Law is sad or going through a traumatic memory, he’ll let Law cuddle up in his coat for comfort.

He loves Bill Evans. His favorite song is Autumn Leaves. Law learned it on the piano for his birthday.

This was sort of in a Law HC I wrote, but Corazon once took Law to the zoo to look at all the animals. Law really liked the penguins, otters, and the tiger. Corazon liked the elephant, otters, and the petting zoo.

Corazon has a surprisingly very aesthetic ACNH island. He makes little noises sometimes when working on his island. It probably looks something like this.

"your sweet self" like are we joking?

and yeah like. not to be crazy but I DO find it more likely that they were fucking than not which ik is Controversial to say in this fandom lol. but a) they're the least reliable narrators you'll ever find and b) there's too many things like this that are just........ like if they weren't fucking it wouldn't make sense. like. they either fucked or they both have created elaborate fantasies in their heads to refer to & reference constantly where they did imaginary fuck. and the latter is hilarious but personally I just think they fucked 💀

like personally I'd buy anything along the spectrum ranging from "they had feelings for each other that were never realized" to "they fucked once and it went badly" to "they were fucking nasty since they were young & it was the Emotional Problems that fucked their relationship" and I don't put Too Much stock into anything but. Music question for the boys, if you haven’t answered this before. Do you think Billy or Stu (or both) would like and listen to Korn?

Yeah, to me Korn is mostly a Stu band! They get silly and funky in a way that just feels like him to me, and there's going to be a couple Korn songs on his WoM playlist. 'I got the life' Is one that extra feels like him, I can just see him dancing around to the part that's like "getcha boogie on". I don't think Billy would hate Korn the way he hates Weezer or anything, I just can't see him going out and buying a Korn CD the way I can with Stu.

Also I just think Stu would love doing those Jonathan Davis mouth sounds (to Billy's great distress).

Billy: "What do you want to rent tonight? Don't say Leprechaun I'm not watching that shit again."

“Dark Star” is There in Spirit in “Darkstarathon” Episode 3

Spoiler alert - there’s no “Dark Star” in episode 3 of “Darkstarathon.”

Phil Lesh & Friends - the former Grateful Dead bassist; guitarists Grahame Lesh and Stu Allen; keyboardist Jason Crosby; drummer John Molo; and singer Elliott Peck - hint at the elusive song a few times. But despite “Dark Star” being the only entry on the setlist (there’s a photo) there’s no “Dark Star” in the 45-minute, in-studio performance.

In its place are Grateful Dead songs and pieces of Grateful Dead songs in a continuous improvisation that contains the spirit of the titular song. One highlight among many: Grahame Lesh doesn’t sing lead on one number, ceding that duty to Allen, Peck and Lesh the elder. The latter leads “Mountains of the Moon,” appearing at the 15-minute mark and squeezed between bits of “Spanish Jam” and the “Star.”

Other songs that peek out but don’t materialize include “Let it Grow,” “The Other One” and “Here Comes Sunshine,” the latter leading to a quiet, quite pretty, bit of delicate improv that ends the video when the band’s leader exhales with satisfaction after coming down from this long strange trip.

While Allen sings “Loser” and “China Cat Sunflower,” Peck is the brightest light at the mic. She honors Pigen’s legacy on a bouncy “Mr. Charlie” and sings “New Speedway Boogie” - which the band imbues with jazzy, between-verse interludes - with righteous anger that seems to indicate she witnessed the atrocities at Altamont.

Peck was not yet born when Altamont happened. Perhaps the senior Lesh, the only one of these musicians who was there, told her about it.
