Tommy Chong had an "off color" sense of humor even before Cheech & Chong. in 1963 He was in Vancouver , BC playing guitar in a band called Little Daddy & The Bachelors, who opened for Ike & Tina Turner Revue and many other acts from the Chiitlin' Circuit. Chong talked the boys in his band into changing their name to "Four Niggers & A Chink"... Well, that didn't go over too well and they eventually got around to changing their name to Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers. Their repertoire consisted of mainly Motown Covers and this went on until 1965 when Mary Wilson & Florence Ballard heard their act and got them signed to Gordy Records. One of their first singles is this song which is a narrative from black dude confronting the precarious situation of interracial dating called " Does Your Mamma Know About Me". Contrary to the publicized story that Diana Ross discovered The Jackson Five, it is in fact Bobby Taylor who brought the Jackson Five on tours and introduced them to Suzanne DePasse, the then Executive Producer at Motown.
