A Breath Of Fresh Air Podcast: A Gold Medal Show About The Oldies

Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian singer-songwriter whose enduring folk hits included “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and “Sundown,”died last week. He was 84.
Lightfoot found success on the US pop charts in 1970 with the song “If You Could Read My Mind.” That track also earned the artist his second of four Grammy nominations, that one for best malepop vocal performance.
Lightfoot’s songs have been covered by numerous legendary artists, including Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Barbra Streisand, and Eric Clapton, according to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
In July 2022, Lightfoot was interviewed by Australian broadcaster Sandy Kaye for her radio show and podcast A Breath Of Fresh Air.
Lightfoot, in that interview, talked about being in a state of repentance, giving up alcohol and other vices. Lightfoot talked about his two-and-a-half year recovery from an aortic aneurysm. He told Kaye that his big hit, “If You Could Read My Mind” was about the end of his first marriage.
When Lightfoot died, Kaye replayed that episode as a tribute to the singer-songwriter.
Those most Americans don't know her, Sandy Kaye is an extraordinary woman and broadcaster, journalist, and producer who has spent more than 35 years on both sides of radio and television microphones. She has worked with every TV network in Australia, and has hosted her own commercial radio talk-back show. She even held the distinction of being Sydney’s first female newsreader on radio.
Kaye began A Breath Of Fresh Air as a COVID project. It’s now a weekly, hour-long show that’s broadcast on radio stations right across the world, and it can be heard as a podcast on all major podcast platforms.
This is what Kaye says about her podcast: "A Breath of Fresh Air is my passion project. I wake up with it and go to sleep at night with it. I research, produce and present relentlessly and spend a great deal of time finding the artists you hear. It gives me a great deal of pleasure to share these stories with you. Together we learn about where their music took root, how they navigated the road to success, and what’s happened to them since. We get in behind the songs and hear them too. It’s fascinating stuff and, I think, makes for some easy, fun, and engrossing listening."
So what does Sandy Kaye do on A Breath Of Fresh Air? First, she interviews pop music stars from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Yes, that's right. The 60s!
Kaye interviewed teen idol Bobby Sherman in March 2023 about his TV and music career. Late that month, she talked to Elliott Lurie of the group Looking Glass, who wrote and sang Brandy, a 1972 top ten hit. Lurie explains how the song originally was built around his high school girlfriend, Randy. A year after the song peaked on the charts, the girl's name Brandy skyrocketed in popularity. In an odd twist of fate, Barry Manilou had written and recorded a completely different song called Brandy, and the singer was reluctant to, but ultimately convinced, to change the name of the song to Mandy.
So if you're a fan of 60s, 70s, and 80s music and enjoying reminiscing with the artists who made those hits, A Breath Of Fresh Air will get you tapping, clapping, and humming. Kaye is generous in playing those old hits with excerpts running over a minute, sometimes two.
Kaye excels at corralling reluctant guests. After all, many of these people are in their 80s. An example is John Kay of Steppenwolf, who admitted in the beginning of the podcast interview how reluctant he was to do her show, To Kaye's credit, she warmed him up, and John Kay was a fascinating interview.
This year alone, Kaye has interviewed Gary Puckett, Supertramp's founding member John Helliwell, the Go-Gos drummer Gina Schock, singer Melissa Manchester, John Ford Coley, and Felix Cavalliere of The Rascals.
With so much experience in broadcasting, Kaye is as fluid as water as a host. She exudes an approachable warmth with a rich, sweet-sounding voice, and a strong desire to please her guests and her listeners.
Yet, don't misconstrue her for weakness. Kaye can ask the tough questions about controversies that arose when these musical artists were at the height of their popularity.
What makes these interviews -- and the show -- so captivating is listening to musicians who were famous during those decades, and hear their perspective now as people in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. If there are any common themes about these remembrances of fame, the artists all seem to characterize their sudden popularity as a whirlwind in which they were too busy to enjoy it. Others admit mistakes, and chuckle at the decisions they made in their youth.
If you're someone who was there and part of the music of the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you'll definitely revel in the memory lane free trip. But if you're a millennial or Gen Zer, there's also something for you in these recollections by iconic musical artists.
Check out A Breath Of Fresh Air. It can take you back to your youth, or, at least, offer younger listeners insights into why Baby Boomers are the way they are.

Upanattem | Froupe Cocktail - Fioupe Gets Riviera Up And At Em

Monsieur Fioupe Was Upanattem Before Froupe Could Even Get A Drink
As you'll discover later, these three cocktails are all the same drink recipe with different names. For now, suffice it to say that they are basically a B & B sweetened with vermouth or if you prefer, a brandy based Bobby Burns.
Fioupe, Froupe & Upanattem Drink Recipe:
1 ½ oz Cognac
1 ½ oz Italian vermouth
1 tsp Benedictine
Stir the brandy, fortified wine and herbal liqueur together with a barspoon and strain into a cocktail glass. Squeeze a lemon peel on top and garnish with a cherry.
History Of The Fioupe / Upanattem / Froupe Cocktail
The Fioupe Cocktail was actually "up and at 'em" as a drink recipe long before it was re-branded the Upanattem Cocktail and then later misspelled as the Froupe Cocktail. Here's the time-line:
1922 - Robert Vermeire* appears to be the first to publish this drink recipe and calls it the Fioupe Cocktail. Presumably it's named after Monsieur Fioupe who he writes in a note below the instructions, "is a familiar figure known all along the (French) Riviera by everybody, from prince to cabman." There's no indication of who this actually is. However, unless its a very old reference, its safe to assume he wasn't royalty as the last royal sibling in France to hold the official title of 'Monsieur' was Charles Philippe who became King Charles X in 1824.
1925 - Dominique Migliorero, master bartender at the New-York Bar in Nice and Dominique's Bristol Bar in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, indirectly reveals this cocktail's namesake thru the advertisements in his book L'Art du Shaker. Turns out "my lord" is Louis Fioupe, an agent of Jacques Carmona in Paris, representing Cinzano vermouth, Canadian Club whisky, Nicholson's dry gin, Heidsieck & Co "Monopole" champagne and probably other brands as well. Based in Nice, Mr. Fioupe's territory in the Côte d'Azur likely extended from Cannes to Monaco and beyond.
1929 - Judge Jr.‡ lists the name of this drink as the Upanattem and says, "this libation is evidently derived from an old Indian name - but I don't think so." Boy, he was no dummy, that's for sure. You'd have to get up and at 'em awfully early in the morning to fool him.
1930 - Harry Craddick1 must have lost his concentration or had his fingers cramp up typing all those recipes in his book. While he seems to want to revert back to the cocktail's original name, he lists this drink as the Froupe Cocktail which is probably just a typo. Other manuals that year and later default to the authentic nom de famille for the Fioupe Cocktail as well.2-7 Many more would follow.
Guess its time to get up and at them cocktails and see which one of the three tastes better :D

Your CB Six Pack
This has been a longtime coming– the return of the CB Six Pack! For those of you who are unaware, this a weekly segment where we put head-to-head two completely useless things and concoct debates that don’t even exist. Onward we go.
Michael Rubin vs. John Middleton
Joel Embiid is in the Bahamas with Michael Rubin and he’s scared of water slides— videos from Michael Rubin. pic.twitter.com/HobirwLqy0
— Kyle Scott (@CrossingBroad) May 19, 2018
Michael Rubin has established himself as the godfather and OG of the Sixers courtside celeb game. He somehow held down the throne – which he partially owns, which is important – while Meek Mill was in prison. He then sprung Meek from jail and airlifted him to a series-clinching playoff game. Bobby Axelrod wishes he had these balls. Now Rubin is on a vacation in the Bahamas, IG-ing pictures of Embiid at a waterpark. It’s like if someone asked you what you would do with BILLIONS and your response was: free my favorite singers from prison and then vacation with the superstar athletes I employ. Meanwhile, John Middleton jets around in a Phillies-branded plane to deliver his prized free agent signings to Florida and speaks in member-wagging platitudes about getting his “fucking trophy back” as the team is playing ahead of schedule and suddenly appears to maybe be a contender and player in the summer trade deadline jam factory. I am here for the new face of Philly sports ownership – which just happens to include Jeffrey Lurie hosting a Lombardi Trophy (bizarro world!) – in the absence of Ed Snider and his balls-forward ways. But I have to give it to Rubin– he’s the most interesting, fascinating even. HE IS FROLICKING IN LAZY RIVERS WITH JOEL EMBIID. That’s hard to beat.
Yanny vs. Laurel
F YOU! I don’t care. It’s a hearing pitch thing and it’s really not worth your time. HOWEVER, this video has me all jammed up like the aftermath of some banana pudding:
guys….play this clip with the audio on.
If you think of the word "Brainstorm" you will hear Brainstorm. If you think of the words "Green Needle" you will hear Green Needle.
We are officially in the matrix and I have no idea what is going on pic.twitter.com/PAwWlTn0GN

GOML 2018 (@LiquidHbox) May 17, 2018
The crazy thing, unlike other social media minder benders (SMMB), is that you can seamless switch from hearing one to the other simply by listening for each. It’s wild, like we’re all part of an experiment for unwitting viewer involvement in Stranger Things season three.
People who love fun vs. people who hate fun
#Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked by reporters about the absence of QB Tom Brady: “I’m not going to talk about the guys that are not here.”
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 22, 2018
The Patriots would, by all accounts, appear to have been murdered in a pool of cold, hard blood of Christ thanks to Messrs. Foles, Pederson, Ertz and the other religious torch-bearers on the Eagles. Pointing this fact out on a needlessly frequent basis every time a nugget of bad news about the Patriots drops is refreshing in the way a steam bath surrounded by massaging animatronic Sheilas in the Australian Outback may well be refreshing (never tried it). It is with that backdrop that I present to you someone who hates fun:
#Patriots QB Tom Brady will not be present today for OTAs, source said. The wait continues.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 21, 2018
Dude I wish people would stop this dumb take. The reports of probs w Brady/kraft/belechek came out in that article before playoffs… has zero to do w eagles
— Brian Fioretti (@Instigatorz889) May 21, 2018
Can we all, just for a moment, stop being annoying Nancys and enjoy the fact that the Eagles spiked the Patriots into irrelevancy and strife? It feels better this way.
New Jersey vs Delaware
INTERESTING WRINKLE in the impending legalization of sports gambling– Delaware seems to have beaten New Jersey at their own game – puns intended – and may well be first to implement legalized sports gambling. It’s a matter of semantics and pride, for which the odds are -120 Delaware at the moment, and little else, but it did get me thinking that with Pennsylvania and their garish proposed 34% tax rate to follow, Philly may well be ground zero for sports betting, with a substantial percentage of its fans based in one of the first three states to legalize sports gambling following the Supreme Court’s reversal of a 1992 law. Not only is this a major shift in how sports will be consumed, but we’re looking at a large influx of cash into the region from gambling companies eager to be first-movers in the space and get players locked in on their platform. No one is talking about how Philly may be the launch market for, without hyperbole, THE COMPLETE REINVENTION OF SPORTS AS WE KNOW IT.
Elijah Craig Barrell Proof Batch A vs. Elijah Craig Barrell Proof Batch C
I’ve been waiting to write about this, and now seems like a good time. Elijah Craig’s 2017 Barrell Proof was voted the 2017 Whiskey of the Year by several outlets. At a roughly $60 suggested price point, remaining stock flew off the shelves late last year once it received so many awards. It was offered in three batches: A, B and C– January, May and September. I was lucky enough to find two (A and C) and an undisclosed location in South Jersey, and rode with C as the bourbon of choice for all three Eagles playoff games. I’ve since moved on to A and, now, a batch of 2018 A I found on a shelf which is now long gone. C was the winner, not just because it throated me to a Super Bowl, but also because it was slightly deeper, stronger and more complex. A is good, don’t get me wrong, but C was absolutely fantastic and damn-near perfect. I suspect you might not have an opinon on this, but just vote to keep up with this trope.
LeBron James vs. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George
This is a recurring topic on the podcast with Russ, who I think hates LeBron James but has since realized he needs to soften his stance at risk of sounding like an idiot. For me, this is the only question up for debate– LeBron or a combination of Kawhi and Paul George. In any scenario where it’s just one guy, the answer is so unavoidably clearly LeBron that I view anyone who disagrees with great contempt. LeBron, as it turns out, could wind up beating the Celtics by himself. I’m not sure what else he can possibly do to further prove himself as the GOAT, but just know that signing him means the Sixers winning two NBA championships.

Cult Movie Essentials: T-Force (1994)
What do you mean? You have never heard of T-Force? They are the world’s first fully cybernetic law enforcement team who should have taken the cinematic world by storm if it were not for the fact that every idea in this film is clearly taken from something you have heard of!

Samantha Boshnack’s Seismic Belt Releases Live in Santa Monica on Orenda Records
The trumpeter and composer Samantha Boshnack isn’t a geologist by trade, but she certainly thinks a lot about earthquakes and volcanoes. Over the past 15 years, while living in her adopted hometown of Seattle, Boshnack has hiked the environs of Washington’s Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens with a kind of unnerved fascination. During her travels in places like Mexico and Indonesia, she’s made a point to visit the storied volcanic sites. Throughout her journeys, a couple of questions have persisted: What causes these astounding landscapes and events, and how are they all connected? And how can these vistas be so unspeakably beautiful yet also harbor such a profound potential for catastrophe?
Boshnack’s inquiries led her to an exhaustive study of the Ring of Fire, the horseshoe-shaped region surrounding the Pacific that contains the majority of the world’s volcanoes and experiences about 90 percent of its earthquakes. Her answers, from the purely emotional to the surprisingly scientific, can be found on Live in Santa Monica, the new Orenda Records release by Samantha Boshnack’s Seismic Belt. With Boshnack on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ryan Parrish on tenor and baritone saxophones, Paul Cornish on piano, Nashir Janmohamed on double bass and Dan Schnelle on drums, Seismic Belt is given added dimension through string players Lauren Elizabeth Baba, who solos on viola on track one and violin on tracks two and five, and violinist Paris Hurley, who solos on tracks four, six and seven. It’s the ideal ensemble to tackle these vital, sometimes volatile compositions, and it allows Boshnack to explore the median between the charms of her two primary vehicles as a bandleader up to this point—the 14-piece B’shnorkestra, with its touches of symphonic grandeur, and the small-group avant-jazz dynamism of the Sam Boshnack Quintet.
Boshnack’s eight labyrinthine works are filled with creative allegories, and Seismic Belt uses textures and strategies from both experimental chamber music and the bop-rooted jazz avant-garde to conjure up these natural marvels. Her research also comprised the cultures inhabiting the various locales within the Ring, and Boshnack’s unit interprets these world-music facets in rousing ways.
Live in Santa Monica “examines our relationship with the Earth,” Boshnack writes in her liner notes, “including the elements of risk and faith in that uneasy cohabitation.” With some serendipity, Boshnack’s visionary new project was birthed in a town of many fault lines, Los Angeles. As the 2018 recipient of the 18th Street Arts Center’s prestigious Make Jazz Fellowship, an honor sponsored by the Herb Alpert Foundation, Boshnack was able to work on her commissioned piece within an engaging, multidisciplinary arts community over a three-month period (or, rather, a community within a community, as Boshnack also became immersed in L.A.’s jazz, improv and arts scenes during her stay). The 18th Street Arts Center lists among the top 20 artist-residency programs in the U.S., and the alumni of the Make Jazz Fellowship stand as some of improvised music’s most important young artists, including trumpeter Marquis Hill, cellist Tomeka Reid and saxophonist Matana Roberts.
To say that Boshnack took her commission seriously would be a gross understatement; in fact, few composers have been as committed to the musical expression of an extramusical concept as she is to illustrating the wonders of the Ring of Fire. In “Subduction Zone,” Boshnack’s harmonies collide and coalesce like tectonic plates. “Kamchatka” takes its name from the volcano-saturated peninsula of the Russian Far East, and its music draws upon the traditions of the region’s indigenous people. On the clever “Tectonic Plates,” Boshnack adds ideas above, below and against the main motif, to mirror the interactions among the different levels of the Earth’s shell, or lithosphere. “Summer That Never Came” delves into the cataclysmic eruption that occurred in southern Iceland during June 1783, which created the volcanic chain known today as Laki. The resultant ash and sulfur wreaked havoc throughout Europe, Japan and America, and on the northern tip of Alaska, the polluted air blocked the sun to devastating effect. The composition’s first section takes cues from Icelandic music and aims to embody the frenzy of an eruption; later, with influence culled from Eskimo songs, it shifts into a doleful reflection on tragedy. Propelled by tour de force solos from Parrish and Cornish, “Convection Current” imagines the movement of molten rock within the earth and then outside of it, as lava.
“Choro” is an homage to exceedingly volcanic Chile and an opportunity for Boshnack to tap into her considerable experience in Latin groups. The title is a Chilean word referring to a bold person who is at once daring and graceful, and the gallant music, with its intimations of cueca chora, cueca brava and bolero styles, follows suit. “Fuji” reiterates the project’s overarching theme of beauty and destruction emanating from the same source; with insight gleaned from a quote by the legendary Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, Boshnack melds the peaceful harmonies and soulful dissonances of traditional Japanese music with the tumult that defines some of the country’s more contemporary output, like its fertile noise-rock scene. Eighty percent of the planet’s volcanic eruptions occur underwater, and “Submarine Volcano” homes in on one such event, the West Mata volcano of 2009, the deepest ocean eruption ever found. Cornish’s piano engages in call-and-response with the ensemble, in the image of the rich choral heritage of nearby Samoa.
Although Boshnack didn’t begin composing in earnest until she was at Bard College, where she studied with the saxophonist Erica Lindsay, her upbringing in rural New York was filled with music. (She counts a childhood favorite, Chet Baker & Strings, as an unlikely touchstone for her current orchestrating.) Boshnack started on trumpet at 10 and by age 13 she’d become obsessed with Charlie Parker, urged on by her music-buff dad. School bands and summer music camps led to Bard, and during college she also studied with Boston-area trumpeter Jerry Sabatini. After graduating, Boshnack migrated west and set up shop as a working musician and composer in Seattle, where she could find a healthy balance between the quietude she needed to create and the activity she required to make a living. It proved to be a fruitful choice. In addition to earning some of the most esteemed commissions and residency spots currently available to jazz-rooted musicians, she leads her own groups and is a part of the acclaimed composers’ collective Alchemy Sound Project. She has also toured extensively in the zany, postmodern Reptet and performed or recorded with such artists as Wayne Horvitz, Butch Morris, Eyvind Kang, Jessica Lurie, Bobby Previte, Amy Denio, Jim Black, David Byrne, Terry Riley and Robin Holcomb.
Boshnack sees Seismic Belt as an ongoing project whose concept could easily spark new work. “I feel a lot more music could be written about the Ring in Fire,” she explains. “There are so many more places that are affected, and I want to find out more about the myths and stories and coping methods by those who’ve lived in these places.”

Oscars 2018: All The Viral Moments!
I look younger now than when I was in my early 20s
With so much star power in one room, we knew SOMETHING memorable would go down.
And, thanks to Twitter, all of the noteworthy moments from this year's Oscars have been documented online. No, really!!
Photos: All The Oscars Red Carpet Fashion!
Case in point, Jennifer Garner got the GIF treatment, when she seemingly came to an epiphany during the ceremony. Specifically, Ben Affleck's ex was seen clapping with the rest of the audience, when her hands noticeably stopped moving and an "OMG" look crept upon her face. LOLz.

Animals Got Some Love At The Academy Awards
A couple animals got shout outs during the Oscars. Special effects make-up artist Kazuhiro Tsuji kicked things off when he made sure to thank his cats while accepting the Best Makeup and Hairstyling award for his work on Darkest Hour. Later on, Alison Janney thanked "a cast and crew and bird that elevated [her] work" during her Best Supporting Actress acceptance speech.

A Totally Unnecessary Tribute To Movies
An hour into the award show's broadcast, the Academy decided to air a movie montage in order to celebrate the organization's 90th birthday. Sadly, the footage wasn't super enjoyable, as it served no real purpose. But hey, Hollywood celebrating Hollywood isn't a SHOCKING thing -- just extra AF.

Kobe Bryant's Win Was Not Celebrated Online
Amid the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, it seemed crazy that Kobe walked away an Oscar winner this year. In case you forgot, Bryant -- who won for Best Animated Short for the film Dear Basketball -- was arrested in '03 for sexual assault after he was hit with rape claims by a hotel staffer. Ultimately, the criminal charges were dropped and Kobe settled the matter out of court.

Gary From Chicago Was MIA -- And The World Took Notice
Host Jimmy Kimmel certainly tried to recreate the viral Gary from Chicago moment from last year's Oscars, as he brought Gal Gadot, Ansel Elgort, Emily Blunt, and others to visit with unsuspecting movie watchers at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. In an attempt to incorporate the elated fans who were surprised with A-listers, Jimmy brought up Mike Young from Lake Elsinore to introduce Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph.
Unfortunately, Mr. Young did NOT leave a lasting impression...

Tiffany Haddish Recycles A Look For The Oscars
Tiffany is without a doubt the most relatable celeb out there right now. We mean, we just LOVED seeing Miz Haddish in the white Alexander McQueen dress she wore on Saturday Night Live AND to her Girls Trip premiere. Frances McDormand Celebrates All Women In Her Acceptance Speech
During such an empowering show, it only seemed right that France McDormand celebrated all women in the industry amid her Best Actress acceptance speech. (She also gave a special shout out to Olympian Chloe Kim too). Unsurprisingly, Twitter has since rallied around the A-lister's battle cry!

The comedienne has previously joked that she spent "a lot of money on this dress" (priced at $4,000 gown). Get your money's worth, girl!!

Be sure to watch the speech AND take a look at the reactions (below).

Texans’ Bob McNair apologizes for saying NFL can’t have ‘inmates running the prison’
Expression or not, the optics of an owner essentially describing himself as a prison warden is not great.
Seth Wickersham and Don Van Natta Jr. of ESPN pulled back the curtain and provided an in-depth look at the recent NFL meetings between owners and players to discuss protests during the national anthem. The most eye-raising quote in the article came from Houston Texans owner Bob McNair, who reportedly derailed a discussion when he told other NFL owners that they “can’t have the inmates running the prison.”
The comment came during a meeting that didn’t include current players. But McNair’s words reportedly offended NFL executive and former player Troy Vincent. Via ESPN.com:
After the owners finished, Troy Vincent stood up. He was offended by McNair's characterization of the players as "inmates." Vincent said that in all his years of playing in the NFL -- during which, he said, he had been called every name in the book, including the N-word -- he never felt like an "inmate."
That sparked a back-and-forth with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones who said NFL owners are historically responsible for the success of the NFL. However, McNair later pulled Vincent aside to apologize for the comment and then released a statement Friday, after his words were made public in a report published by ESPN.
Statement from Texans Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert C. McNair: http://pic.twitter.com/EXdwKZ4y4x
— Texans PR (@TexansPR) October 27, 2017
The expression of “inmates running the prison” or asylum is used to describe leadership surrendering power to those being led. But the optics of owners essentially describing themselves as prison wardens isn’t great, particularly because police brutality and systematic oppression are at the heart of the player protests.
And even if McNair apologized, the comment only serves to validate what many already perceive the thoughts and beliefs of NFL owners to be. That includes Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and other players who tweeted about McNair’s comment and apology:
I can appreciate ppl being candid. Don’t apologize! You meant what you said. Showing true colors allows ppl to see you for who you are.
— Richard Sherman (@RSherman_25) October 27, 2017
Nahhh Bob McNair didn’t say that...nah y’all tripping. He couldn’t have. Nope he didn’t. Did that wake some of y’all up now?

People sayin’ how they really feel

While many of the owners thought the meetings were a strong effort to move forward and progress, some players weren’t as impressed.
Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung described the meetings as "unproductive at best and disingenuous at worst."
That’s not surprising after the ESPN article characterized most of the owners’ concerns as squarely on business, ratings and sponsorships, and seemed to show the group as dismissive of the concerns of racial inequality that prompted protests in the first place. Leading the way was Jones, who has pushed for a league-wide mandate to stand during the national anthem like the one he declared for Cowboys players:
He said the owners had to take the business impact seriously, as the league was threatened by a polarizing issue it couldn't contain or control. To some in the room, it was clear Jones was trying to build momentum for an anthem mandate resolution, and in the words of one owner, "he brought up a lot of fair points." Jones believed he was one of the few showing any urgency on the matter and seemed to be more frustrated that not everybody was listening than he was passionate about the mandate.
It also didn’t help that others’ attempts to listen to players’ concerns were awkward and/or tone deaf. Bills owner Terry Pegula complimented Anquan Boldin for his message about police brutality, but called the receiver “Antwan.” He also said the NFL could use a spokesperson like Boldin on social issues because it couldn’t be "white owner but needs to be someone who's black."
Not all owners were unsympathetic. 49ers owner Jed York and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie have been supportive of players’ right to kneel, and only nine owners were in favor of a mandate. Roger Goodell was also in the corner of players and surprisingly opposed Jones for much of the meetings, creating an interesting stage for a future power struggle.
Next week, the owners will again meet with players and this time it’s expected to include former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick — the player at the core of the protests during the national anthem. It’s a chance for owners and players to take a step forward, but the ESPN article further illuminates that the gulf between the two sides isn’t close to being bridged.

Your Wednesday Morning Roundup
Everything is starting to come up for Philly.
We’ll talk Eagles a little later, but the Flyers got some of the Super Bowl magic onto them.
Jordan Weal won last night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes with three seconds left in overtime.
JORDAN WEAL SCORES WITH THREE SECONDS LEFT IN OVERTIME! FLYERS WIN! FLYERS WIN! pic.twitter.com/Fyz4Ba5LVW
— Broad Street Hockey (@BroadStHockey) February 7, 2018
It also helped that Claude Giroux played goalie for two shots in the extra session to keep the game alive. Wayne Simmonds scored the equalizer in the second period, after Elias Lindholm got the scoring going.
Brian Elliott returned to the lineup after missing four games due to a lower-body injury. He made 27 saves on 28 shots in the win.
Flyers return home on parade day Thursday when they host the Montreal Canadiens.
The Roundup:
REMINDER: Get your Eagles shirts here, including our new parade route design.
The Sixers played in Philly for the first time since the Super Bowl win, and invited some players to the game. They ended up watching a dominant 115-102 win over the Washington Wizards to open up a crucial five-game homestand.
Joel Embiid had 27 points and 12 rebounds for his 24th double-double of the season, while Dario Saric had 20 points. The other three starters also reached double-digit point totals.
The team goes back up a game over .500, and resume play on Friday against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Also on Friday, the team will honor Bobby Jones with a sculpture on their “76ers Legends Walk” in Camden.
Now to a boatload of Eagles content.
First off, we know more details about the parade. Maybe every player should get introduced? See you at 11 AM on Thursday.
If you are using SEPTA Regional Rail, good luck getting a pass.
Carson Wentz added another ring. An engagement ring. What a week.
Inside the NFL released some new clips from Sunday. First, we found out that Nick Foles, the Super Bowl MVP (!!!), called Philly Special. Also, Malcolm Jenkins yelled at Tom Brady after he failed to catch a pass in the second quarter.
Speaking of Philly Special, somebody got a tattoo of the play thanks to one of our shirts! Specifically, this one!
Someone else got a tattoo of Nick Foles hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy on his calf.
Foles is back on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
The Eagles released video of Merrill and Mike calling the top plays from the Super Bowl and it’s even more surreal that we won.
There’s plenty more reactions of the final play from the Super Bowl from many Birds fans.
Four plays that people aren’t talking about, but should.
Tim writes on the Super Bowl and rips Ernest Owens because he pretty much deserves it.
Reliving the Super Bowl through fans of NFC East rivals.
Alshon Jeffery doesn’t care about the Super Bowl hooplah.
The team’s future is bright, but let’s enjoy the moment for now:
The “bright future” pieces are a staple of sports journalism; they burn hottest when a team comes close but doesn’t quite close the deal. Had the Eagles lost Sunday, you’d be pretty much squinting from the glare of them by now. But the truth is, none of us can foretell the future.
I don’t think I know anyone, a year ago, who saw the Eagles winning this Super Bowl, and I am extremely certain I didn’t know anyone a year ago who foresaw them winning it with Nick Foles passing for 373 yards while Wentz watched from the sideline. For one thing, Foles was still in exile with the Chiefs at that point.
I’m just really happy to be writing about a parade this week, and about history being made, and to not to have to pen any of those “cheer up, they’ll be back” screeds. I covered the Eric Lindros-era Flyers. I wrote that sort of thing in 1995, 1996, 1997 after the sweep by the Red Wings in the final, and probably a time or two after that, as well.
I covered most of the Donovan McNabb era with the Eagles. I vividly recall that night 16 years ago in St. Louis, 52 yards away from the Super Bowl, Aeneas Williams outfighting Freddie Mitchell for the McNabb pass, McNabb coming out to the tunnel to watch the Rams celebrate their 29-24 victory.
Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement were guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday night. Last night, Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, Zach Ertz, Chris Long, and Jalen Mills joined Jimmy Fallon:
Malcolm Jenkins was also on Late Night with Seth Meyers:
Torrey Smith went on CNN.
Adam Schefter spoke to Brian Dawkins and Jeffrey Lurie on his latest podcast.
Enjoy Boston being angry.
Air Traffic Control told a smaller flight to speed up. Because the Birds were behind them.
In college hoops, Penn crushed Princeton 82-65, and St. Joe’s got walloped by Davidson 91-62.
Tonight, top-ranked Villanova hosts St. John’s on FS1 and Temple hosts East Carolina on ESPNEWS. La Salle visits George Washington. All three games start at 7 PM.
In other sports news, Josh McDaniels withdraws at the last second from the Colts head coaching job. He’ll stay as New England’s offensive coordinator. Could this be a reason why?
FWIW: On Sunday, ESPN's @mortreport reported there still are doctors who have concerns about Andrew Luck's shoulder and whether he could wind up needing additional surgery.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 7, 2018
Kristaps Porzingis tore his ACL against the Bucks. His season is done.
This also happened:
The Greek Freak jumps OVER Hardaway Jr!! pic.twitter.com/auLCHgf79v
— Milwaukee Bucks (@Bucks) February 7, 2018
The Cavs are a mess. LeBron won’t waive his no-trade clause, he reportedly doesn’t have a relationship with any of the team’s front office staff, Isaiah Thomas made a comment, and the Cavs lost to the Magic after leading by 21.
Panthers interim GM Marty Hurney has been placed on paid leave after his ex-wife accused him of harassment.
Carlos Beltran won’t join his Astro teammates at the White House.
In the news, it might be good the parade isn’t today. The weather’s gonna be crap.
Another rocky day on Wall Street?
Donald Trump wants a big military style parade. Bud Light probably won’t sell free beer on that parade route.
