Thor Annual #11 (Zelenetz/Hall, Sept 1983). A glorious retelling of Thor’s backstory, complete with some new retcons. My favorite is that, before his exile as Donald Blake, Thor discovered his worshippers murdering unarmed monks in his name. His attachment to Midgard now is atonement for those misdeeds. The burden of a god to his faithful is a really rich theme we haven’t explored much yet…

Avengers #213 (Shooter/Hall, Nov 1981). The infamous “Hank Pym assaults his wife” issue is an expectedly tough read. Even with a summary of Pym’s checkered psychological history, this doesn’t feel like a flawed man facing his demons — this is just a raw, nasty tale of a founding Avenger who plunges into paranoid psychosis. Tony muses that Pym’s legacy is inextricably linked with the Avengers, which kinda damns the whole team as they’re powerless to curtail his abuse. I’m not saying that superhero comics shouldn’t tackle real problems. I’m just saying this attempt is graceless and cruel. After Carol Danvers��� departure, an icky pattern is emerging…
