I've been trying to make a board game for a few years now, based on being trapped in another realm filled with Pinoy mythical creatures.
I think one of my mistakes there is to have a modular board rather than a fixed one. Since I got the idea while playing Betrayal and Catan, I got stuck on that idea. But while a modular board has the "feels" I want, it can't work.
I need a fixed board, and then find a way to have that "mystical place that doesn't make sense" feel added later. No clue how to design a fixed board though, so far I only have an idea to split it into 5 sections.

So I'm not particularly good at actually working on what I say or plan to work on. But hey, I did actually make something and complete another project!
This is Trench my submission to the Postcards from the Front game jam. It's a micro-wargame (for a certain definition of wargame anyway) with a light WW1 theme designed to fit on a postcard.
I actually had a prototype build since around the 23rd of Dec, but didn't actually do the layout and write the rules until yesterday because I was visiting family.
Ended up loosing one of the prototype pieces in transit, so show it in completion, but I think you can get the gist.
Can't say I love what I came up with visually, and the rules are a bit rough, but game design-wise it's a fun little puzzle for two players, particularly if you like abstract strategy games.
Anyone who's played The Duke ought to recognize the design language and mechanics, it was a big influence on the game. The movement and piece design in is really cool, and I think game designers should be adding it to their game design toolbox. I know I will (I already have a few ideas brewing, but we'll see if they go anywhere).
Beyond that, what I'm most happy with in the game is it's theme through mechanics.
While the board is 5x5, since you can only capture pieces in No Man's Land, it's really played in the cramped 3x5 space, forcing frequent unit interaction. Because of that, to get a piece to your opponents trench it requires heavy sacrifice, generally leaving you with one or two units left at the end of the game representing the inevitable pyrrhic victory of trench warfare, if any victory can be claimed at all.
Infantry not being able to move backwards servers two purposes, 1) to further force the player to engage and sacrifice pieces and 2) as a nod to the fact when an order came to go up over the trench a solider faced death from either side.
Not being able to reposition in the trench servers a similar purpose, preventing players from making empty, cyclical moves and actually have to engage.
The officers returning to the trench comes from the idea that from the average conscripts perspective, if they survive, they'll always be another officer issuing orders, but those they knew who died in battlefield can never be replaced.
But yeah, I'm pretty happy with how this all came out, and will probably be updating it a bit in the next few weeks.
If you're interested in downloading the game here's a link to the page on Itch.io

Hi everybody! I made a game called All the Witches!! I really wanted to make something magical for the queer community who have struggled with the creators of certain worlds being jerks. It’s an original TTRPG system with some cool deck building mechanics exploring the diversity of witches in fantasy. It would mean a lot if you checked out the Kickstarter here!
The Kickstarter ends this Saturday, April 15th at noon EST!

#Thanks for prayers everyone - the day got significantly more manageable! Also I was heroic. I went to the boardgame store and there#were many incredibly gorgeous dice sets - colourful and sparkly and inventive in design#and like a legendary character I did not succumb to buying but merely admired them because I had dice at home.#Where's my gold medal?

I made a simple tool to randomize faction picks in Root
It's all vanilla Javascript, so if you download its source code you can run it locally with no need for a server or a ridiculous chain of dependencies~
Hope it's useful!

I'll optimize it and make it more accessible tomorrow#now I'll rest and go to bed prob

Old painting I made for a historical board game: Count Rollo, the first ruler of Normandy, France.
Once a viking raider, the Frankish king, instead of trying to fight the foreign invader, offered land and gold for the viking to stay and fight his former countrymen.
The series Vikings expertly portray this event in history, with just enough artistic liberty to make the epos whole.
Hope you like it,
Best,
JCH
