On 13th October in Perth (Boorloo), Western Australia, a fifteen year old Aboriginal boy, Cassius Turvey was walking home from school, wearing his school uniform, with friends when a car full of white adults pulled up and brutally beat him with a metal pole and a machete. Cassius later suffered seizures and strokes and was put in an induced coma. He died 8 days later. The 21-year-old white male Jack Brearley wrongly blamed the children for smashing his car windows. The WA police commissioner callously stated that Cassius was “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and dismissed it as a “case of mistaken identity”, as though that justifies it. This would not have happened to a white child. It is a hate crime. Vigils are being held across the country and the Blak community are hurting.
Tumblr media
Cassius was much loved in his community. He had a pay-what-you-can lawn mowing business. He liked to dance and was strong in his Noongar Yamatji culture.

You can donate to his mother’s Gofundme here. They’re raising funds for the fight for #JusticeForCassius . Please boost this post.

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS THE NAME AND PHOTO OF AN ABORIGINAL PERSON WHO HAS DIED.
His name was Cassius Turvey. He was a 15 year old noongar kid. He ran a lawnmowing company in his spare time where people could pay what they could afford.
He was walking home from school just a week ago and a passing car allegedly shouted racial slurs. They then stopped and beat Cassius with a metal pole. Apparently they suspected he was involved in breaking windows in the community (as if minor property damage allows someone to beat another living human being to near death.)
He suffered severe brain injuries from the attack and spent several days in hospital. After he was released home, he suffered seizures. The brain injuries had become worse, with a severe stroke landing him in a medically induced coma on life support.
On the 23rd of October 2022 his family said goodbye to Cassius. The family had recently lost Cassius' father to cancer only a month ago.
This violent attack occurred in broad daylight in Australia.
Say his name. Join a vigil or protest. Support his family to ensure they can use the full weight of the law against his attackers.

The Unspoken Link: Section 25, Aboriginal Genocide, and the Australian Referendum
Australia’s upcoming referendum, shrouded in a mysterious voting code, offers a unique lens through which we can reexamine some dark facets of the country’s history. Particularly, it provokes renewed scrutiny of Section 25 of the Australian Constitution, a clause deeply rooted in the colonial legacy, and raises questions about its role in perpetuating systemic inequalities against Aboriginal…

Your post reminded me of how it's wild when I look at the comments on IG posts about Palestine and see grown white Americans (nkt exclusive to the US ofc) saying things like, I was always proud of my country until this happened, and now I ashamed, and it's like, on the one hand, I'm glad you realize the genocide of Palestinians is bad, but you were proud of the US during BLM? During ongoing genocide of Indigenous peoples? All the invasions that happened long begins this? And that's not even getting into whites I have seen who rightfully recognize that the police beating up pro-Palestine supporters is wrong, but then say things how the police should be beating up BLM "terrorists" and Indigenous people's blocking pipelines instead smh
exactly. every time a white person from Canada, the US, Australia or Aotearoa has said, "omg we're complicit in genocide!!" the last 7 months its like.........yes. many of them.

SEE A PATTERN? FORWARD AND TO THE LEFT, PLEASE...
*JUST SO WE’RE CLEAR, I SPENT AN AFTERNOON WATCHING FAUX NEWS (SHUDDER) AND RECORDING ALL OF THE THINGS THAT REPUBLICANS SAY KILL JOBS, AND THEN DID THE RESEARCH TO SEE IF ANY OF THEIR CLAIMS HOLD UP IN THE REAL WORLD.
WHAT I FOUND WAS THAT THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE. IN FACT, THOSE COUNTRIES WHICH TOOK THESE POLICIES TO THE FURTHEST EXTREMES ALL SEEMED TO OUTPERFORM THE US WHEN IT COMES TO EMPLOYMENT.
SO I CREATED A SURVEY OF ONLY THOSE COUNTRIES, EXCLUDING ANY THAT DID NOT FIT ALL OF THE CRITERIA. FOR EXAMPLE, I EXCLUDED BELGIUM, BECAUSE, EVEN THOUGH THEY FIT MOST CRITERIA, THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD IS ACTUALLY WORSE THAN OURS, HOWEVER, IN CASE YOU WERE CURIOUS, THEIR UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS STILL LOWER.
I ALSO FOUND THAT THEY BEAT US WHEN IT CAME TO EVERY OTHER SOCIAL MEASURE I COULD THINK OF...?
Actually, North American unemployment stats are pretty misleading and don't report the real jobless rate and the poverty it creates.
http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/unemployment-charts
For example, European countries measure their real unemployment far more honestly and comprehensively than the US [which is what I'm referring to. Bill Clinton had the long-term unemployed removed from the Dept Of Labor's stats in 1994]
For example, in France now the official jobless rate is 7.2%—that’s quite a bit higher than the US, which has an official rate of 3.4%.
However, France, like Italy and Germany, which all have a 35-hour regular work week, consider anyone working less than 11 hours a week to be unemployed, and adult full-time post-secondary students training in a recognized profession are considered part of the work force and therefore unemployed as well—in addition to employable welfare recipients.
http://tinyurl.com/2exnpzx http://www.eurofound.europa.eu/.../feature/fr0103138f.html https://www.eurofound.europa.eu/publications/article/2001/unemployment-rate-falls http://tinyurl.com/34yk4e4
The US does not include students and has no minimum hours provisions in its calculations. By these standards, if you worked, even an hour in a week during the federal survey, you’re considered employed. If you didn’t work and hadn’t looked for a job in four weeks, you’re not considered part of the work force. Non-disabled adult welfare recipients and the huge chronic poor populations, especially in urban areas, aren’t considered either. Canada is similar.
So if you apply US-style measures to France, the rate turns out to be 3.4%. Now, if you apply French measures to the US, the rate jumps to a whopping 24.6%—that’s largely because of the huge under-employed low-paid part-time work force in the US, and the huge number of employable welfare recipients and chronic poor.

Youth prisons in Australia don’t keep communities safer, they create a cycle of offending. Keeping kids locked up for 22hrs a day traumatises them, it doesn’t rehabilitate. Diversion, prevention and justice reinvestment is the answer.

I'm confused, what's going on with the BLM and brumbies? I'm somewhat disturbed at Australia shooting them from the air, it would be more humane to just inject them with long lasting birth control or round up some up and sell.
Long lasting birth control has been tried with moderate success in some areas in the US, but I don't know if that has been tried in AUS. Additionally, the folks who advocate for "wild and free" mustangs heavily protested the attempts at birth control and got some of those programs shut down.
The commentary to the last ask is not in response to a particular incident, but rather the continuing activity of Animal Rights Activists and anti-roundup activity

When I say Leftists are racist, the defense used to be "how can they be racist against their own race"?
The answer is, of course, that they see the sin of whiteness as something that, like a curse, is removed by harming others.
If they whip up enough hatred towards whites, like Dan Slott, they will be transformed to not white.
Today, we see Leftists like Neil Gaiman denouncing the wicked whitey, despite many white friends, and, so I hear, lovers.
Terry Pratchett would have been tossed into a gas chamber by these guys.
The hatred of one's own race is nothing new.
It doesn't surprise me at all that Leftism turned on a dime to become antisemitic. Jewish Leftists were appalled. How could this happen to them...?
To which I answer, how could it not? Leftism is a racist hate movement, hungry for blood, but there are so many whites, and as antifa-blm discovered, THEY SHOOT BACK.
Which is why Leftists target the disarmed Jews globally, they toss bricks through the windows of Jewish homes even in Australia.
They hate, above all else, that country where Jews have teeth..

"If your mental world is already one of extreme (and delusional) fear, mass shooters do not seem like an aberration. They are just another threat among many. The natural state of life, in much conservative literature, is 'nasty, brutish, and short,' and the forces of order and civilization only just barely keep the forces of evil chaos at bay. Conservatism is characterized by an extreme pessimism about our ability to improve the world; the standard argument is that progressives are naive and hubristic in their desire to effect change through social policy and whatever they do will 'hurt the very people they are trying to help.' The view of human nature that underpins right-wing thought is false, but it’s a compelling story.
If you view the world as a place full of virtually uncontrollable menacing evil, it’s easy to see why gun control doesn’t make sense. Under a conservative framework, it’s hard to understand why gun control would ever work. After all, we’re up against the forces of Pure Evil. Surely Pure Evil would not let mere laws stand in its way. If it was determined to kill, it would find a way to get a gun. As Arjun Byju noted for this magazine in a piece on the normalization of 'active shooter drills' in schools, 'we cannot legislate away evil' is a common GOP refrain, with shootings treated 'like the fates and furies of Greek mythology, something horrible that may strike us from without, and to which we are all but consigned.' But as Ryan Cooper notes, in reality, it turns out that a lot of gun violence is spur of the moment, and can be disrupted just by putting inconvenient obstacles between would-be perpetrators and access to a gun: 'If you can get a gun in a day or even a few minutes, then it’s easy for a stupid argument or moment of despair to end in a shooting death…But if you make it an expensive, annoying, and time-consuming process to get a gun, then this process is disrupted.'
This view sees perpetrators as fundamentally human, and reduces the distinction between the Bad People and the Good People. Gun control cannot work in the conservative view because, to use a favorite NRA slogan, 'if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.' The idea being that 'outlaws' are a class of people to whom the law will be no obstacle. But as the U.K. and Australia show, it turns out that many would-be 'outlaws' can in fact be deterred by extreme inconvenience.
For many people on the right, I don’t think it’s possible to change their position on gun control without changing their entire ideological worldview. Their fear and pessimism are not grounded in reality. To support gun control, they would have to believe in a very different kind of world, one where many of our problems were solvable through policy, perpetrators were human beings subject to ordinary human incentives rather than just Forces Of Evil, and where it is conceivable to not be afraid all the time. But for the American right, the world is teeming with antifa terrorists and BLM rioters, and there’s no choice but to arm yourself to the teeth (and possibly shoot anyone who rings your doorbell).
I am generally a proponent of trying to have constructive political conversations with people and find common ground. I believe in trying to argue and persuade. (I have previously been called 'the left’s debate bro.') I’m actually teaching a class this weekend (come join us!) on how to effectively respond to right-wing arguments and change minds. But one of the things I’ll be emphasizing is that often, dialogue is in fact quite hopeless, because a person’s ideology is very deep rooted, and you’re not going to change their mind on one issue without getting them to radically alter their entire worldview. I think gun control is an issue like that for many on the right. They don’t think mass shootings can be stopped, and it’s not because they are misreading the statistics, it’s because they don’t see how the forces of evil could be kept at bay by something as trivial as a regulation. Just as they’re skeptical of diplomacy with China and rehabilitation in the criminal punishment system (How can you negotiate with evil? How can you reform it?), they think that the only thing you can do to stop violence is kill the perpetrators. The right’s world is a world of menace, where all we can rely on is Good Guys using violence to stop the violence of the Bad Guys. (This is why many on the right see the murder of Jordan Neely as the act of a Good Samaritan. For them, Neely was, in part for racist reasons, coded as one of the Bad Guys, and white ex-Marine Daniel Penny is coded as a Good Guy.)
In situations where it’s hopeless to persuade people, and they’re doing harm, the only choice you have is to restrain their power. This is why the only hope for ending mass shootings involves reducing Republican political power. They are never going to change. If they changed, they would cease to be Republicans. They must be thrown out of office if we are ever going to build a country where we can feel safe going about our daily lives."
- Nathan J. Robinson, from "Why The Right Will Never, Ever Support Gun Control." Current Affairs, 8 May 2023.

In a world where the line between reality and the virtual realm is increasingly blurred, Meta, the digital titan formerly known as Facebook, has taken upon itself the Herculean task of tackling voice misinformation. Yes, you read that right. The same platform that has been a hotbed for misinformation and conspiracy theories now wants to be the knight in shining armor, the beacon of truth in a sea…

Not an academically excellent
Akutuh pernah blg sm kak @asrisgratitudejournal kalau aku kepikiran pengen kuliah sampe PhD tapi jiper karena akutuh bukan org yg akademis banget gitu. IP ku pas S1 jauhhh dari kata Cum Laude (boro-boro!) cuman 3.23. Tapi ya seengganya masih masuk treshold minimum masuk Unimelb krn UI masih masuk kampus Tier 1 😂
I am not academically outstanding, again. But i can be shine in another way, hopefully! Kegiatan ekstra-kampus itu sangat menyenangkan buatku.
Waktu S1 banyak ikut kegiatan social enterprise, bikin yayasan, ikut pelatihan, sehingga knowledge aku gak “cuman” di bidang keperawatan aja, atau bahkan sebenernya krn aku gak tll suka sm jurusanku, aku jadi mencari hal lain yg lebih seru 😝
Pun ternyata sama dengan di Unimelb ini. Ya pasti pada taulah betapa ku nanges2 ya menghadapi tuntutan akademik Unimelb ini, tp somehow aku ttp bs melakukan beberapa hal di luar akademik seperti :
1. Ikut seleksi training dari Mc Kinsey sampe tahap akhir. Jadi tahu seleksi Mc Kinsey tuh kaya gimana walau nggak keterima
4. Daftar jadi peserta lomba Geneva Challenge. Ya kaya macem bikin paper yang nantinya akan dpt pendanaan utk convert it into proposal project gitu.
Tumblr media
Huhuhhuhu alhamdulillah keterima 😭🙏 insyaAllah akan mewakili Unimelb beserta 11 orang lainnya untuk ikutan simulasi sidang PBB. Sebenernya hal yg udh pernah aku ikutin pas YSEALI di Amerika th 2018. Makanya aku beraniin diri ikut krn sedikit banyak udh tau formatnya gmn.
Somehow ku merasa emang ternyata kupunya “attachment” sm lingkungan. Waktu YSEALI beberapa tahun lalu, akutuh kan nyoba smp 5x ya. Percobaan 1-4 tuh aku pake calir community engagement sama economic empowerment kan, gak lolos! Pas nyoba lewat jalur environment langsung keterima pada percobaan pertama! Wah! Makanya since then kumerasa kaya “Lingkungan is also my thing” gitu.
Bismillahi tawakaltu allawllah, laa hawlaa walla quwwata illa billah. Semoga Allah mudahkan langkah2 kedepannya :)
