Vintage Drarry Fics

Thought I'd put together a list of some of the old Drarry 'classics' of my teenage years, for anyone interested. All posted between 2001-2006, compiled using my (bad) memory, a lot of googling, fanlore.org and numerous different LJ rec accounts (including the incredible @capiturecs). I checked as best I could, but if anyone knows of any fics that their author doesn't want to be shared, please let me know and I will of course remove.

Please also note that these fics are of their era, when attitudes may have been different, and they may not all be grammatically perfect. I haven't reread all, as my own tastes have changed, but most importantly do note that they may not be tagged - don't blame me when, for example, Harry dies tragically on a rooftop at sunrise...

Hogwarts Era (mostly 5th-7th year)

Does anybody remember the origin of this gif? I've seen it online since probably 1998-1999 and it used to be everywhere, but I never knew who made it, where it's from, or if it has an official or even agreed upon name.

Who’s the first ever character you drew and how did they evolve as you started drawing more? 👀👀👀

First character was a Lock named Rippington. I eventually changed his name to Xahvin, because he was named after one of my fav smooth jazz bands at the time. Used to draw him frequently and he hasn't changed much. He is large for a lesser will and is a barely tempered, seething ball of outrage. He acts as diplomat to a particularly contentious empire that alternatively keeps trying to assassinate him and bury him in unnecessary paperwork. He's scarred up for reasons, half probably from the murder attempts and half because he's combative and has tussled with other Locks in the past. Riker (Archaeon) is one of his agents, the hate is mutual.

He also dislikes Scott, the Team, and all Traders. Kitra is still his Bonded Companion and about the only peaceful thing in his existence. Outside of her, he has a fairly agreeable relationship with Vel, a human that was lent to him by Movallo (diplomat to another empire) to help with diplomat duties. Vel earns his respect and they get along OK.

Deep Fried Computer - early 2000's

This is a literal blast from the past. I remember seeing this about fifteen years ago but I never knew the full story behind it so here it is after the pictures.

I'm not sure which forum to post this, but I just wanted to share one of my stories with you guys :D. I had recently read a few articles on submersion cooling, where you take your computer and dump it into a tub of non-electrically-conductive oil. It seemed to work really well, and was cheap. So I saw it as a type of poor man's water-cooling.

I bought a large aluminium oven tray and 9 litres of canola oil.

Since I didn't really want to screw up my good computer, I tested it out on an old Pentium II 266 with Nvidia Riva TNT2 Ultra. I placed the motherboard in the tray, and began pouring canola oil all over it, until it was partially submerged.

And it worked. The computer booted into Windows 98 fine, and I even started up good old Quake 3 and started playing.

But I soon became hungry for a fried snack - and since I had used all the oil in the house I couldn't fry myself anything. Then I had a brilliant idea. Why not use the oil that the computer's in?

I placed an electric stove under the aluminum tray, and turned it to full blast. Soon, the oil reached frying temperature and I dumped a few chips into there. Meanwhile, the computer was still happily chugging along running Quake 3.

Eventually, though, the strain of 120 degrees C ambient temperature and the load of Quake 3 caused the computer to overheat and crash. I rebooted it, and it loaded back into windows. Although Quake 3 still crashed when trying to play. At that point, the chips were ready. I turned off the heat and enjoyed my snack while I waited for the oil to cool so I could use the computer again.

I had thought originally that the computer's processor got hot enough to fry but it turns out the poster put a electric stove under it.

Amazed the computer still worked after.
