🪼Daily Cnidarian Fact:🪼
Black Sea Nettle Jellyfish: The black sea nettle can be quite massive, with a bell diameter potentially up to 3ft and oral arms extending to 16 or 20ft. The bell color is a distinctive opaque dark purple to nearly black, with the margin having a lighter brown reticulated pattern. The specific epithet, achylos, is constructed from the Greek achlys, meaning "mist, darkness, and obscurity", in reference to both the species' coloration and the rarity of its sightings.

April/May: Ciarra Mermay 2024 Day 02.
Oh hey we're on a Roll with this Mermay challenge! Day 02's prompt is to draw a Black Sea Nettle which is a Big ol' Jellyfish. So I settled with drawing a sweet Jellyfish Merm who were gonna call "Gerri". Named after my Tutor at Art College. I really like this one, I know that Black Sea Nettles aren't Purple but something about this just really Pops! You know...

Can you tell us anything about the Chrysaora achylos? I'm obsessed with them and as someone living on the east coast, I have no hope of seeing them in person :( 👉👈.
Of course! We don't currently have them at our Aquarium, but we have housed them in the past.
Black sea nettles (Chrysaora achlyos) are very mysterious. Except for periodic appearances in California ocean waters, the distribution of this jelly is largely unknown. It does occur in Baja California, Mexico (Isla San Quentin). Up to May 2015, the most recent appearances were in 2010 and 2012 in San Diego, California, waters and 2013 in south Laguna waters.
The reproductive cycle of this jelly in the in the wild is not known. A collaborative team of researchers from several aquariums and the University of California at Berkeley has been successful in propagating the jellies in laboratory settings. When the jellies swarmed in local waters in 1999, reproductive systems of adult males and females that washed ashore were sampled. Sperm and eggs incubated together for 24 hours produced swimming planulae (larvae). These settled to become polyps that cloned non-motile polyps. Eventually, strobilation took place and ephyrae were released that became mature medusae.
This jelly has symbiotic relationships with both larval and juvenile crabs (Cancer sp.) that travel with the jelly host until the crabs are ready to become bottom dwellers. The crabs have been observed consuming detritus-laden mucus from the oral arms. Larval and juvenile forms of the Pacific butterfish, Peprilus simillimus, have also been observed swimming behind the bell close to the oral arms into which they could swim to escape danger.
Last fun fact, the black sea nettle was the largest invertebrate given a scientific name in the 20th century and that did not occur until 71 years after it was discovered.
Thanks for asking us about the black sea nettle! If you're interested in knowing more, click the photo to read our Online Learning Center entry about this species.

Jellyfish Common Names vs Scientific Names
Those who've known me for a while know that I typically prefer remembering a jellyfish's scientific name over their common name, but why?
Well... it's mostly for simplicity's sake. Jellyfish have been around a lot longer than humans have, and as a result, many species have accumulated multiple confusing and misleading names. It's just easier to know them by scientific name, which typically have more of the truth in mind.
Many more don't even have a common name... so it's also sort of a thing I do to keep things consistent.
Also, some scientific names are really cool. Like for this jellyfish:
Would you rather call it the "Black Sea Nettle" or the Chrysaora achlyos? (I talk about the etymology here if you're interested in knowing the names of the Greek Deities that make up its name. It's very cool and would take way too long for me to explain on this post)
#.Professor Jellyfish speaks#I'll try to accompany the scientific names with common names and pictures if applicable though#sometimes I don't get any information with just the science name so I do have to know all of a given jellyfish's names as well haha#though that isn't to say I know all jellyfish by scientific name alone#I really only know jellyfish from Order semaeostomeae very well#I tend to know jellyfish from other classes and phyla by common name haha (it's a bit embarrassing... I still need more time to learn about#-them)#chrysaora achlyos#black sea nettle#jellyfish

So I’ve decided every once in a while I’m going to make one really long post on something I’m interested in and today it’s my favorite animal: The Jellyfish (technically my favorite is the Black Sea Nettle but I have many close seconds)
My personal favorite thing about jellyfish is how absolutely GORGEOUS they are I mean take a look at this BEAUTY
(black sea nettle)
They look almost like fabric floating through the ocean and it’s honestly quite fantastic.
While some people don’t like jellyfish because of them ya know stinging you, not all jellyfish sting you!!! A great example is the moon jelly, which is completely harmless to humans! (Also super adorable picture below)
Another common misinformation spread about these guys is about Man O War, which are misidentified as jellyfish, though they are actually Siphonophore! (A colony of many smaller critters) Not only that, but Man O War aren’t as dangerous as people believe they are! I often see them confused with a real and extremely dangerous jelly, the Box Jellyfish.
One more fun (not really) fact about jellies is that they actually are a major issue with some environmental issues and with destroying fisheries. Pollution and chemical runoff into later has caused huge jelly blooms, which can take over fisheries, and cause major issues. While I adore jellies I’ll be the first to say that some of them are causing major harm to the environment and the population of some fish. (List of sources below!)
I’ll probably talk more about them in the future as I adore jellyfish so much. Anyways, theres my infodump! I hope you enjoyed it!

lets ramble abot my first jellyfish oc(s)
Since I'm not planning on making this idea into an actual game anymore, all lore is fair rambling game :)
Their full names are as follows:
Aurealis Aurita Vita (15) and Chrestos Chironex Vita (11)
they are brothers :)
I'll ramble under the cut, hehe
Aurealis Vita was born to Pleione Vita and Chryos Vita, two prominent figures in the noble society. He hails from a kingdom of human-marine animal hybrids, operating under a monarchy of crown jellyfish.
Aurealis themself was a hybrid with moon jellyfish (Aurelia labiata, to be exact) as well as his mother, while his father was a hybrid of a black sea nettle. As a sort of hybrid species, their hair acts like jellyfish tentacles. This fact will be important later.
Chryos was... not the best father, but his mother was loving and warm, so his early years were great.
Then came Chiro.
Aurealis was only 4 years old when Chiro was born and his mother died.
All the odds were against her with the birth. Coming from a long line of box jellyfish hybrids, there was a small chance that she could give birth to one.
Even then, newly born box jellyfish hybrids usually don't have venom potent enough to kill, but Chiro was different. His venom was unusually strong, and Pleione died in childbirth.
Everything changed then. Chryos upgraded from a not good father to an absolutely terrible father- often showing preferential treatment to Chiro and berating Aurealis for not meeting his standards. Sometimes verbally, other times physically. Sorry :(
Chiro himself was a precocious child, showing more interest in books than others. He quickly grew to be more smarter and competent than Aurealis, and stronger too. He often injured Aurealis on accident on account of his deadly hair, which would grow longer or shorter depending on his emotional state.
He still was not happy, however. He longed for affection and validation that didn't come from his father- which only came when he did something destructive.
The servants obviously feared him, and no matter how nice he was, he couldn't help but feel self conscious about their nervous demeanor around him.
Aurealis loathed Chiro, and she would bully him to make themselves feel better. He took the bullying- even internalizing it, because he felt as if his own existence were the cause of all the problems. Admist all that, he gained an interest in nematocytes, and spent much of his time studying them, and finding cures and uses for them.
Eventually, Aurealis had enough of life at home, and ran far, far away, to a whole other place full of different people and different... Everything, really. Leaving Chiro alone. Leaving everything they knew behind.
Honestly, their story came out of a desire for me to write something wholly dramatic and emotional, and I really liked it. I could develop it so much.
I latched onto Aurealis in particular, because her story involved heavy themes of self-hatred and the different ways to cope with it. They belittled others, they acted the opposite of the way they actually felt in a "fake it til you make it" sort of way (ie. ore-sama like). Of course, I give him a redemption arc, but they eventually have to deal with the fallout of their actions and I think that's great :).
Chiro, on the other hand, dealt a lot with gifted kid burnout and a different sort of self-hatred. He feels immense guilt for events that he had no control over, and seeks to fix them. He doesn't feel worthy if he doesn't have anything of worth to offer anyone, and his story is just. Incredibly sad.
Especially since terrible things could happen to him (I haven't decided yet tbh). Which I will ramble about in a different post. All I will say is that I named his theme is named "Lethe" for a narrative reason, hehe.
So anyways. They're the perfect comfort characters.
Recently I've been super into writing the brothers as adults (hence the florist Aurealis) and... Ugh. I've been missing them more and more lately, especially since I still need to write and design for Ite!
#Aurealis uses all pronouns by the way while Chiro just sticks with he/him#you guys might um. See some similarities with Chiro and Katsuo now that I am talking about the Vita brothers more#I drew a lot of inspo for Ite with this first story. At least character writing wise#Aurealis and Momoka also have. A lot in common. More than I intended and realized#God. Writing really does repeat itself every so often doesn't it#Um.#This story was created during my jellyfixation infancy. So rn everything seems so.... Basic to me#Aurealis and his mom fill the basic ''helpless'' role with one of the most helpless jellies- the Moon jelly#(originally based Aurealis and her mom on different species- but I feel like it makes more sense for them both to be the Aurelia aurita)#Chiro is literally the epitome of box jellyfish#And Chryos is a scary dad and the scary hyrbid of jelly- the black sea nettle#The sea nettle also eats moon jellies which was a subtle nod to. Um his meanness I guess#Anyways now I feel like my jellyfish creations are a lot more creative haha.#I guess I've improved a lot in 2 years. But I still come back to this story for comfort sometimes haha.#It's pretty solid . Even if it's basic#mun rambles#ocs#aurealis aurita vita#chrestos chironex Vita#my art#I'll draw their adult designs later#It's actually. Pretty interesting how they've both grown.#Aurealis and Chiro still have somewhat of a rocky relationship. Even though Chiro is willing to forgive Aurealis he hasn't fully processe-#-d his own baggage yet. And to prevent others from getting hurt he tries to suppress as much strong emotion as possible so. Yea he's strug-#-gling#tw dysfunctional family#tw child abuse#Um I think that's it haha

Oh, House of The Dragon is a feminist show? Team Black is a feminist team?
They wrote out Nettles, a canon black woman. They threw away Rhaena's storyline and subsequent characterization. They wrote out her storyline and replaced it with the canon black woman's storyline. Because Rhaena's a black woman in the show? Are they the same now? Because women's stories are interchangeable?
Rhaenyra has spent 5 episodes making no decisions during a War, they changed her grief from ugly and volatile and brutal to the more appropriate sad and weepy, as all good mothers should be.
They changed Laena's death so they can set a precedent for how honorable Rhaenyra's will be. To prop up a white woman. Why is her death not her own?
Daemon kills his wife, who he calls misogynist names constantly, by his own hand. No plausible deniability, no assassins, he's there. Why did they show it? A woman's death that was only implied to be his fault in the books, but they had to portray a woman's death. What did it accomplish? What did I have to see so bad? Is this Domestic Violence?
Both Daemon and Rhaenyra have sex on the day of Laena's funeral, with her family in the building, including her grieving daughters. And then they get married that week. That was his wife, mother of his children, someone whose death brought him to tears. Even if Rhaenyra isn't friends with her in the show canon, she should have some respect for this woman. Do they not honor the dead in Westeros? Do they not have mourning periods? Religion or not, her body was closer to the castle than it was the bottom of the sea. Why did she have three actresses? Why did she have an extra growth spurt? Why was her adult actress significantly older than both Alicente and Rhaenyra's? Wasn't she younger?
Why does Baela only support Jacaerys but not her sister? Why does Baela talk about Rhaenys but not her mother? Because her father has a new wife? Why does Rhaenyra care if Helaena was hurt or scarred by Jaehaerys death when they don't interact at all? Because she's a mother too? Does that make her saintly now? Was Rhaenys not a mother when she wanted Laenor dead? At his sister's, her daughter's funeral. How does she know Helaena is an innocent? How can Rhaenyra be ambitious enough for the throne, how can Alicente be a silver-tongued usurper but not Helaena? Why doesn't Rhaenyra have female friendships? Why are all her female conversations only about making her queen and the war? No wonder people ship Alicente/Rhaenyra
#hotd#house of the dragon#rhaenyra targaryen#laena velaryon#laena targaryen#nettles#rhaena targaryen#baela targaryen#alicent hightower#rhaenys targaryen#rhaenys velaryon#hotd season 2#mine#my post#rhaena of pentos
