A Non-Exhaustive Guide to Vampire Fiction from its creation to the modern day

I was making this list because @optimistic-autistic asked me for vampire recs and I realised I get asked this question often enough that it would genuinely be easier for me to just make a post on Tumblr and keep on adding to it whenever I come up with something new and just linking it whenever someone asks me again.

Some things on this list are, some are romance, some are both and some are neither but without further ado, i present to you my Magnum Opus (unfinished and ever growing)

Historical Vampire Fiction (aka what shaped the genre):

1. The Vampyre by John Polidori (created the genre of romantic vampire fiction)

2. Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu (created the trope of lesbian vampires)

3. Dracula by Bram Stoker (obvious reasons)

4. Interview with the Vampire (the book) (i suggest starting with The Vampire Lestat since IWTV can get... A bit boring?)

5. Twilight (Look do i think it is good? No. Do i realise the irrevocable and irreversible impact it has had on vampire fiction as a whole? Unfortunately yes.) (it is still incredibly racist and anti-indigenous and yes the Quileute Tribe still has not seen any remunerations as far as I know)

Vampire Movies (I don't really watch movies that much so this list isn't as big as the rest but i still wanted to make an attempt):

1. Nosferatu 2024 (anti-intellectualism side of the internet has hit this movie hard go watch it immediately and I cannot make it clearer to you that gothic fiction is not meant to be sanitised please for the love of God do not apply your human morals to this)

4. JOE GOLDBERG FROM HIT FRANCHISE YOU. oh man i love that fucking freak and his mommy issues and the fake woke feminist facade and nightmares in the suburbs and the Knight in Shining Armor carried out to its most horrific prolific potential UGH. i want to pin him on my wall and frame him in glass like a butterfly. he means everything to me. EVERYTHING. so many neurotic tendencies and problematic behaviors spawned from exposure to his character at a critical age. wow i love that guy forever.

5. stefan salvatore vampire diaries. first ever vampire with a binge eating disorder (kills people pathologically) THAT is intentionally narratively framed as an addiction. ALSO in some weird fucked up forced-fated-cursed love triangle forever when his soulmate is clearly just his brother. my number one favorite vampire forever. did i mention he has no sense of humor. oh MAN i love that guy.

6. FICTIONAL ANIME BOY LIGHT YAGAMI. I LOVE SERIAL KILLERS WITH AN ABSOLUTELY FUCKED MORAL COMPASS WHO HAVE A WEIRD THING WITH THE DETECTIVE INVESTIGATING THEM. also see the entire death note musical. where is the justice when the guilty all go free… what would it be if i saw the world like him like a synonym… he is ensouled in the same way JD heathers is

A random headcanon: This isn't *technically* a headcanon, but it sort of is because it's only canon in Stefan's Diaries, but Damon got blamed for the Jack the Ripper murders. Was not him, but another vengeful vampire pinned it on him, so he had to swerve England for *a while* and Enzo thinks there's something vaguely familiar about him when he meets him but he just cannot pinpoint it.

General Opinion over said character: I like him on a surface level and think it's fun to explore things with his past. I don't hate or love him, but he is a character that I love to write about because his mind and angst is interesting.

one night her brother came home and he was...different. a stranger accompanied him and for the first time in her life, addie experienced true fear. by morning she was no longer human, now a creature of the night. the stranger taught them how to live as vampires and although she still had an uneasy feeling, she embraced the change, if only for her brother.

the uneasy feeling comes to a close as their maker is executed and the clan is forced to flee france. addie and her brother are separated for the first time since her birth.

now alone in the world, addie spends her days studying, learning the history of her kind. in her free time she searches for her brother, travelling around europe. ( there is a lot of open room here for supernaturals that were in europe around this time to meet abbie ! leaving it open and vague )

eventually she hears rumors in a small romanian village about a hostage that had been taken after a witch hunt. with fear that it may be her brother they were talking about, she attacked and killed the captors, eventually finding and saving her brother. this would be the first time addie had ever really lost control and it still haunts her to this day.

she nursed her brother back to health, as reluctant as he was. he had always been there for her when she needed it so she would be there for him as long as it took. the brother who came back was not the one she remembered but she would cherish him just the same.

since then she's been trailing her brother around the world, eventually finding their way to portum. addie took on a job as a history professor at the university. it's her first time teaching and her methods are questionable but she has a first hand account of the 1900s.

addie has a love for all things vintage/classical, classical books & music, vintage clothing and jewelry. she still owns a few pieces of clothing, ones that were easy to lug around as she travelled a lot.

Stefan had a long night of doing stupid tasks for Klaus until the asshole hybrid returned to Mystic Falls. After he was forced to turn off his humanity, Stefan traded in his hero hair and brooding for blood lust and aggression. Things were starting to get boring in this town, and Stefan was sick of waiting around like a fucking lap dog.

He was looking forward to chilling in his room for the night. Blasts some Bon Jovi music. Maybe swipe a couple of Damon's blood bags. The sound of his bathroom shower running caught Stefan's attention when he entered his room. He walks towards the bathroom, half expecting to find Damon taking a shower in there. Again. But to Stefan's surprise, it was someone else entirely.

Standing behind Stefan's glass door shower was Grayson Gilbert. The steam from the hot water had fogged up the glass, but Stefan could make out the image of Grayson washing his hair with Stefan's imported Italian soap and shampoo. Watched the soapy suds run down the witch's back before Stefan looked back up, and asked his question.

Grayson turns to him with an innocent smile. A smile that had gotten Grayson his way on more than one occasion, but without his humanity, Stefan wasn't fazed by it anymore. “Oh, hey. Welcome home. Hope you don't mind.”

“What the hell are you doing in my shower, Grayson?”

“Isn't it obvious? Having a shower, and between you and me, this is a lot safer than Damon's bathtub. I'm pretty sure it's covered in STD germs.” Grayson jokes. Stefan was not amused, even if it could possibly be true about Damon's bathtub conquests.

“Look, Grayson. I've had a really shitty day, and you're only adding to the misery, so if you could try to get my humanity back another time and leave, that would be greatly appreciated. Or I break your arm.” Stefan said.

Grayson turns off the water and steps outside, not bothering to cover himself up. It's not like Stefan hasn't seen it all before. “Wow. I thought that Ripper Stefan was supposed to be the life of the party. What's wrong? Klaus ground you?”

Stefan rolled his eyes. “If you're trying to provoke me or something, it's probably not a good idea to do it to a humanity-less vampire. Especially one with no self-control. I could drain you dry like a juice box before you even get a word out.”

“So dramatic. Look, all I'm saying is that if you really are the same Stefan, who was the life of the party in your journals. The one who impressed Klaus and Rebekah, I wanna party with that guy.” Grayson said, walking past Stefan and into the bedroom. Stefan watched Grayson go through his drawers and closet, arms across his chest. “What are you doing?”

“I left some of my clothes here. It should still be here from all those times we…” Grayson let that sentence hang in the air as he put on a pair of black briefs (Stefan's by the way) and then went for some pants. Pretty soon he was dressed in Stefan's old purple Bon Jovi shirt, and a worn-out leather jacket.

“That's all my stuff.” Stefan noted.

“I'm just borrowing it. I'll return it after the party.”

“What party are you talking about?”

Grayson smirks. “My friend, Kuba invited me to a rave tonight. Apparently he and some Gypsies are going to be there. It's a couple of towns over. Let's go.”

Stefan's eyebrows were raised. “And why would I do that?”

“Because you're the fun brother now, right? I told you. I want to party with the Ripper, so let's party.” Grayson said. “You know I'm just gonna steal your car if you don't come.”

“Fine. But if I kill anyone, it's on you.” Stefan said, following Grayson out of the room.

come the end of legacies, lizzie remained with the salvatore school, helping her mother and her friends rebuild and welcome the new class

in the year following, as the OEA rose in prominence and threatened the school, lizzie still committed to the school's cause regardless, keen on not running away over a hopefully insignificant threat

unfortunately for her, the threat wasn't insignificant, and her dedication to the cause is what led to her sacrifice

she took a solo recruiting mission to visit a supposed troubled young witch in need of safe haven. it was supposed to be a low stakes endeavor, not even worthy of a proper day trip. in reality, the "troubled young witch" was working for the OEA, and what was meant to be a good Samaritan mission led to lizzie being captured, sacrificed, and trapped in the prison world

she was in there for 3 years, absolutely livid at the turn of events. the karma of the situation (or lack thereof because she was trying to be good and not run away and deal with things head on and take initiative and spread warmth and community and all that kumbaya nonsense) has led to some setbacks in her own personal growth, ngl, but she's working on that since her return

also worth noting that her time away has left her feeling just awful in general. prior to her sacrifice, she was just starting to embark on a journey of figuring out a future for her self, now that she was finally in a position of having one with the merge out of the question. but then the OEA became a thing causing trouble, and she was thrown into a prison world just as things started seriously changing in the real world. being trapped for so long stifled her and her growth, and she's come back to a world different than the one she left, all the people she's loved moved onto various different stages in their lives over the 3 years, and she hates that.

anyways, she's only just recently finally made her way to new orleans after her release, and she's got a lot of resentment at the OEA for her imprisonment, while also dealing with a lot of self-esteem issues stemming from a profound sense of aimlessness. she's doing her best to reorient herself to this new reality

trapped together: lizzie spent 3 years in a prison world, she was bound to make all kinds of relationships with the people she was trapped with, and I want them all. friends in the prison world, roommates/neighbors, hookups, relationships, enemies, unlikely friends (!!!), people she worked with during her many (failed) attempts to escape, etc. and all of the above!

vampire mentor. the s2 stefan to her caroline. ideally, this is someone who was in the prison world with her. I imagine that in the year after legacies but before lizzie got trapped, she had started making decent headway into her vampirism with mg, but after getting trapped, I can def see her making it her mission to get through honing her skills totally, if only to help her get through the endless sameness of the days

baby vamps. similar to the above, except instead of a mentor, this was someone who was new to the vampire world with her, and they explored the ins and outs of vampirism together. also ideally in the prison world, likely to be a WC.

crush (m): lizzie is prone to superficial crushes, pure eye candy. it's a great distraction for her, something to pour her energy into easily, and easy is exactly what's she's looking for after being gone for so long. if anything real actually comes from it is something we can plot, but for now, this would just be someone easy on the eyes

crush (f): I hc that lizzie realized she was bi after spending time with the god Jen in s4. since this realization, she's leaned pretty hard into the exploring that part of herself loud and proud and open about it (likely to overcompensate for how out of her field/new being with women is for her), so she probs also has a fem crush too. she's likely to resemble more of her s1 rafael-era flirtation (re: awkward & rambly) with women than her smoother s3/4 semi-confidence.

fwb/fuck buddy: lizzie has got a lot of pent up frustration over her years away, and this person helps her release that. could be friendly arrangement between two peers, or just a fuck buddy who is only contacted when she's got an itch to scratch. this person, regardless of the their relationship to her, likely also is prone to hear lizzie vent her frustrations before/after (and possibly even during) sex because bb's a talker!

living situation. I imagine since her return and coming to new orleans, she's probably living with a family member (her mom most likely, maybe her sister), which is fine, but she'll eventually want to move out into her own space (she was on an independence journey away from her normal familial crutches before being trapped, after all), so potential roommates and neighbors would be fun plots.

friends. and of course, all the friends! lizzie is an extrovert who has a very hard time being alone, so she of course likes to build a community of people she can go to for all the things. shopping friends. foodie friends. gossip friends. unlikely friends. confidants. OEA revenge buddies. accountability buddies.

frenemies. and with friends, comes enemies, which lizzie is prone to making.

what are your character’s goals? do they have any present allegiances?

stefan's major goal is to outrun the past - he doesn't want to be stuck living his life on repeat with nothing but a promise of death and pain inevitably. it's why he came back to mystic falls, to build a new life, which was simple enough in theory.... and then everything became a mess. now with werewolf/vampire hybrids, the mikaelson's, katherine, and even his own brother in town... he doesn't see himself having any peace any time soon.

what has your character been up to before the start of our group? 

honestly? wondering how everything has gone so sideways. through seasons one and two i'm mostly sticking to tradition canon, including stefan struggling with his bloodlust and falling off the blood bag wagon but trying desperately to get back on - especially with the added stressors in mystic falls.

i DO THINK stefan is one of the characters in the universe that has chemistry with everyone he is on screen with, and i'm open to any and all possibilities! soft and sweet? i'm here for it. canon ship? willing to test the waters! crackship? give it to me. also - i'm not a coward like the vampire diaries writers, stefano salvatore is a raging and unapologetic bisexual.

what sort of current or future connections/plots are you looking for?

i'm looking forward to expanding relationships with the friends and foes - the mikaelson's, his complicated family, the mystic falls gang, the fellow doppelgangers, heretics, witches, vampires, werewolves - while in the show we had seasons to explore these dynamics, everything has been tossed in a blender now and we're pressing pulse. when everything collides, it's going to be a hell of a ride, and i'm dying to dive in!
