45741 Leinster arrives at Birmingham New Street with a Wolverhampton High Level-Euston express in 1957. Jubilees were the principal motive power for the Euston-Wolves expresses for the latter part of the steam-era, with Bushbury shed having a sizable allocation of 10, including Leinster. In addition to the Bushbury Jubilees on the Euston trains, Bristol Barrow Road-based Jubilees were also an everyday sight at New Street in the 1950's, working the ex-Midland main line from Bristol to Derby. Note the Midland Red bus on Navigation Street above.

Birmingham New Street in the deep nighttime chill.

D1070, a Class 52 'Western' hydraulic, stands under the lights with a service from London Paddington. It will be removed in favour of an electric loco to take the train forward.

Railway as time shift: One is a representation of state sponsored paranoia and the other is a crassly realised monumentalist structure that looks embarrassingly dated.

You decide which is which.

Only one of them has a railway station buried underneath it, however.

The 1956 film adaptation of George Orwell’s ‘1984′ and the 2017 adaptation of Birmingham New Street Station, which I am reliably informed lies somewhere within the archly named ‘Grand Central’ shopping precinct pictured.
