Knud Kyhn (March 17, 1880 - 1969) was a Danish animal and landscape painter and porcelain/ceramics sculptor, who created many animal figurines for the three major, Danish porcelain factories: Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Grøndahl, and Kähler.
He trained at the Royal Academy and Zahrtmann's school, and traveled widely to observe animals and birds, esp. in Northern Europe. His style of painting aligns with that of Fynboerne, esp. Johannes Larsen.

Why play a boring Precision Bass when you could be rocking a custom-made two-stringed olive-shaped bass like Stig Pedersen of D-A-D. Or an Iron Cross á la Red Baron. Or a Headstock bass. Or my favourite the Seagull bass fashioned after classic Danish Bing & Grøndahl tableware.

Porcelain Effie Hegermann Lindencrone
Vase with lid, height 52 cm, Effie Hegermann Lindencrone, Bing & Grøndahl, 1916, from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Effie Hegermann Lindencrone (1860–1945) is considered one of the most talented and successful porcelain artists of the early twentieth century in Denmark, creating the best examples of porcelain in the Art Nouveau style, or skonvirke, as the Danish form of Art Nouveau is now called. Her work can be found in many museum collections. Read the full article

“Butterfly” plate by Bing & Grøndahl, Denmark
Butterfly, designed ca.1880, was a direct response to the now-iconic “Blue fluted” pattern introduced by their then-competitor, Royal Copenhagen (which now owns Bing & Grøndahl). Plates in this pattern always feature a butterfly in the center, unlike in Blue Fluted. See for example Wallendorf’s “Blue Dresmer” for another similar design, all inspired by the then extremely fashionable Japanese and Chinese imported porcelain designs.

Behind the Scenes of Art Nouveau Innovation: Danish Porcelain from an American Collector
The Museum of Danish America’s latest exhibition, Art Nouveau Innovation: Danish Porcelain from an American Collector opens tomorrow (Oct. 2) with a free open house from 3-6 pm. Read on to get a behind the scenes glimpse into the installation of these incredible artworks.
Prior to arriving at the museum, the curatorial staff traveled to the collector’s home to pack each object and label it with a number. Objects were then placed into crates to travel, and an additional label listing each object number was placed on the exterior of the crate. At the museum, this made it possible to locate each object needed for each display case.
Objects were then place on a padded cart only used for the transport of clean museum objects. The works were very carefully and slowly wheeled into the exhibition space.
An empty case waiting to be filled!
Visible at the bottom of the above image is a glimpse of a purple nitrile glove, which staff always wear when handling museum objects. Also visible, though just barely, is the clear protective layer of archival melinex, which was applied to the base of each object to prevent it from coming into direct contact with the display case. Each piece of melinex was carefully cut to size to fit the base of the object while also not being too visible and distracting to visitors. The melinex was attached to the object’s base with strategically placed museum putty (the white blobs above). Double-sided tape was then attached to the melinex (the brown strip, and the two clear rectangles across the surface of the base) and used to secure the object in place within the case. These steps are meant to ensure that the fragile porcelain will not move or shake, while also protecting the surface of the artwork by only allowing safe, removable materials to come into contact with it.
Once the objects are arranged and secured, they are ready to be displayed under glass!
If you look very closely, you may be able to spot evidence of the steps I’ve listed above throughout the exhibition.
Some objects required different steps in order to prepare them for display. In the case of the plate in the above image, it is displayed using a plastic plate stand. The stand itself was secured to the bottom of the case using double-sided tape. Any points of contact between the stand and the plate were padded using an archival, inert foam. Finally, museum putty was placed at points of contact to secure the object in place on the stand.
In the case of the bat featured in the first image of this post, in order to fit the object into the drawer of the above display case, the thick layer of foam at the base of the drawer had to be carved to fit the shape of the bat. After covering the foam with fabric, this allowed the bat to rest in an indentation low enough to fit under the glass of the drawer and created greater stability for the object within the case.
If this brief glimpse has piqued your interest, Art Nouveau Innovation: Danish Porcelain from an American Collector will be on display October 2, 2020 through January 3, 2021.

Benjamin Olsen (May 3, 1878 - 1935) was an autodidact Danish marine painter. He worked most of his life for Bing & Grøndahl and Royal Copenhagen porcelain factories.
As a marine painter he participated twice in the Danish Royal House's voyages to The Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland (1921 and 1926). He depicted the naval vessels used in a clean naturalistic style, ass seen here:
Niels Juel ved Trøllkonufingur (Kongespiret), Færøerne 6/6 1926 - oil on canvas (Privately owned)
Several of Olsen's canvases are now at the Danish Maritime Museum...

Made in Denmark – Formgestaltung seit 1900: Leipzig vom 02.06. bis 07.10.2018

Christmas is almost upon us once again! Although we currently have no snow here in Iowa, excitement is building and I can’t wait to be with my family again.
Before coming to MoDA, I had never heard of Bing & Grøndahl or Royal Copenhagen’s Christmas plates. That changed within my first few days at the museum, and now they seem almost a fixture in my life. I can’t go a day without seeing one in a picture, or a friend recollecting that their relative collects them. We even eat lunch under the watchful gaze of the Christmas plate collection hanging on the wall! But I certainly don’t mind. The plates are beautiful, and unboxing them is even a unique experience. I’ve included a couple of my favorite plates above. I love the ones that use animals. I feel that using animals (versus people or buildings) pulls at your heartstrings a little differently!
Click on each picture for the title and accession number of each plate!

A Tour of Danish Designer Henning Koppel’s Family Home
Danish designer Henning Koppel is known for his work with Georg Jensen, having designed some of their most well-known silver pieces in the post-WWII period. Koppel, who was Jewish, was forced to flee German-occupied Denmark in 1943. He spent 1943 – 1944 in Stockholm with his family, where he saw success as a jewellery designer for Svenskt Tenn.
When he returned to Denmark at the close of the war in 1945, Koppel began working with Georg Jensen. He also designed lamps for Louis Poulsen and porcelain for Bing & Grøndahl, cementing him as one of the most important and imitated Danish interior product designers of the period.
His family home, now occupied by his eldest daughter, ceramicist Hannak Koppel, is a shining example of how it takes more than good design to make a house a home. Walking through the space, which also functions as Hannah’s studio, it’s not the classic design that stands out (although that’s pretty great), it’s the sense of family, love, and history that permeates every corner. It is clearly a home that has been built over many decades.
So often, we want to design our homes immediately; it should be photo-ready the day we move in. But that’s not realistic or necessary. Building an interior that speaks to the ebbs and flows of your life is a longer process, and ultimately more rewarding.
The Koppel home, situated on a cliff overlooking the water, just north of Copenhagen, is full of art that is both important and priceless; pieces by Matisse and Miro sit next to work by Hannah’s grandchildren. A wall of windows overlook the water and light streams in throughout the day. It’s easy to imagine inspiration striking Henning Koppel in this space. In fact, it was impossible not to feel inspired as we explored the rooms.
Take a tour of the Danish design-filled family home of Henning Koppel and ceramicist Hannah Koppel:
