Crimes of the Heart (1986). Three southern sisters try to come to grips with the meaning of their mother's suicide.
Any movie starring Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek and Diane Keaton as sisters is automatically a 10/10 in my heart! Unfortunately, it's otherwise a bit of a mess. It feels overly convoluted, and while it's focus on the way grief can shape a life is a compelling throughline, it's not as sharply felt as I wish it was in this. 6/10.

Rick Grimes
"I don't take chances anymore."
Daryl Dixon
"Is that supposed to make me like you?"
Beth Greene
"I've survived and you don't get it,"
[ Note ] : These canon characters are the ones I've had the most experience playing and feel the most comfortable using as canon leads in a plot or ship. With that being said, there are other canon characters I'm very willing to play as side characters in a plot. :) Shane Walsh. Carol Peletier. Simon. Glenn Rhee. Hershel Greene. Carl Grimes. Sophia Peletier. Lydia.
No matter who I play canon-wise, I try my best to portray them as accurately as I can, while incorporating my own twists.

Ocs Alice x Rick Alice x Negan Alice x Daryl Alice x Andrea Alice x Tara Alice x Maggie Alice x Beth Peter x Beth Peter x Glenn Peter x Negan Peter x Rick Peter x Andrea Peter x Governor
( Don't be afraid to ship Alice or Peter with your OC or a canon character not listed. I'm open to most ideas! )
R U L E S.
(I promise I'm not mean, I just know what I like! <3 )
(18+) ONLY. I don't feel comfortable writing with minors.
MUST be okay with NSFW content. I will always respect your triggers but would like any plots we do to include some level of violence and smut. If you don't like these themes, no shame, we just aren't the right fit.
No pre-established romantic relationships. (I do make rare exceptions for this depending on the plot.)
I love ocs. I've had some incredible roleplays with amazing ones and will never turn you down for wanting to use yours. WITH THAT BEING SAID--I heavily prefer well-thought out ocs with bios, not blurbs. If I'm going to write a canon character against yours, they have to be fleshed out. I don't want their whole personality and creation to revolve around being with a canon character. It's boring. I'm here for plots and character development, not to solely fulfill fantasies. My ocs have flaws, strengths, backgrounds and can hold their own in a plot without a ship. It makes the story more exciting!
5. Pretty please put effort into the plot and the characters you play. I love smut but don't just want to write smut, or constantly have my character saving yours. I want there to be things happening around our characters, not just to them.
6. Don't pressure me for replies. I work in film and in a bar. Sometimes I get insanely busy. Most times I'm free. I will always do my best to communicate when I'm not, but if you pressure me, I simply won't respond. Especially if I don't respond for an hour and you message me three times. (With that being said if I haven't responded in like a week, feel free to follow up.)
7. If you've read this far, come say hello! I don't bite. :)

Top 5 givers of good cuddle in your opinion?
Oooo okay…
Alex Blake without a doubt. She’s just so soft & tender & i know a cuddle from her would heal my mental illness
Going Rita Calhoun.
As much as she is a bad ass shark, sharp worded, hard shell she’s so fucking soft when it comes to the people she cares about & one of her love languages is gonna be physical touch. (I also HAVE to choose one of Beth’s characters because i just *know* she gives the best hugs)
Joe Velasco
I mean… cmon… he’s built for it. Just snuggle on in there, he’ll tuck you right in under his chin 🥹. (Also has the most amount of cozy looking hoodies & henley’s to steal👀)
Derek Morgan
Similar to Joe, i mean, just built for it. Absolutely lets you smother him with cuddles, always likes to have a hand on you if not having you curled around his side/tangled in his limbs
Olivia Benson
Mother is mothering. She’s just so soft & caring with victims, she’s gonna be able to tell when you need a little bit of love & just silently wrap her arms around you.

Girlie you KNOW the iceskating has been a priority for us (28)
JSA on Ice
Courtney places both hands on their lunch table the first Monday after the holiday break. “In the spirit of the new year, friendship and reconciliation, Cameron has offered us to join him at his new ice rink after school today. Unless you are grounded or dying, I decree presence is mandatory.”
Beth and Rick blink at Courtney.
Yolanda sets down her sandwich. “I dunno Court. Ice-skating? Do you seriously trust me with knives on my feet?”
Rick scoffs. “Do you seriously trust Cameron not to slap me with a restraining order from the Mahkent Estate?”
The three turn their heads to Beth. She twirls her spoon into her steaming leek soup. “Why am I always the deciding vote?”
Rick straightens in his chair, looking like he wants to stuff the words back into his mouth. “She’s right,” he says. “We always do this to her. It’s not fair.”
Yolanda coughs, covering her mouth with the back of her palm. “Simp.”
“I never said this was a vote.” Courtney sat down in her seat. “Instead of patrol, we’re skating. All of us. And we will be on our best behaviour.” She uncaps her apple juice and takes a swig. “It’s gonna be fun.”
“Okay. Whatever. One problem, Court? I don’t have skates.”
“Me neither,” Yolanda chimes in after Rick.
Courtney pauses mid-chew. “Oh.” She wrinkles her nose and swallows. “I’m sure it’ll be fine. Cameron will take care of all the details.”
~.~
The rink is already in use when Beth, Rick and Yolanda are shown to the backyard by a hobbling Sofus Mahkent. The three stop in their tracks. The big box beside the Mahkent gardens is a state-of-the-art newly-installed ice rink; with aluminum bleachers, giant lamps overhead it and an installed kiosk with dozens of skates in many sizes. Cameron is on the ice, twirling around in quick succinct twirls like he’s trying out for the Olympics as Courtney watches in her gold puffer jacket on the sidelines.
“No way,” Yolanda breathes out. “How much did that cost?”
Beth twists the bag of skates in her gloved hands. “A pretty penny, I’d guess.”
Rick scowls. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Courtney’s sixth sense must’ve gone off because she turns around and lights up at the sight of her friends. She pulls them towards the rink and dumps their stuff on the bleachers, talking a mile a minute about how happy and proud she is of Beth and Yolanda but most pointedly Rick coming. She explains that she had gone over the missing skates issue for Rick and Yolanda and had been reassured that he’s got plenty of skates in every size in anticipation of this skating party.
“Isn’t that sweet?” Courtney drops the ones intended for Rick in front of him.
He fixes her with a pained grimace. “The sweetest.”
Courtney doesn’t hear him, too busy helping Yolanda lace up her skates. Her Stargirl high-top boots have made her easily the fastest with laces.
Beth scoots closer to Rick, nudging his arm with her mitten. “Be nice.” Rick side-eyes her but doesn’t reply.
“What are you doing?” she asks when he turns the skates over, inspecting them in the winter sunlight.
He grips the top of the guard to see how firm it is. “Making sure they’re not defective.” He gives them a knock against the bleacher and inspects them again.
“I don’t think Cameron is going to give you defectives skates.”
Cameron comes to a well-timed glide on the smooth ice, stopping right at the edge. He’s dressed in a woolly black scarf over his long-sleeved grey henley. He nods at the crew with cautious optimism. “It’s nice to see you guys.”
Beth goes the polite route, sticking her hand out to shake his like this was a business meeting and not a group of classmates hanging out after school. Cameron rolls with it. “Thanks for inviting us. This looks really cool.”
“I’m glad you’re here, Beth. Really, my grandpa was happy to hear you’d be here.”
She smiles. “I’m happy he seems to be doing better too.”
Yolanda stands up once Courtney is done. She holds onto the banister and wobbles down the steps. Cameron reaches out and helps her glide onto the ice. Within a few uncoordinated strides, she gains her footing and takes off.
“You look like you have a problem,” Cameron says to Rick once they’re all on the ice. He tries to hold in a smirk but it doesn’t seem that it’s working very well.
Rick’s gripping the border for the life of him, inching at a snail’s pace. “Yeah, I have a problem. You’re telling me you have ice powers and instead of touching the ground with your hand–something that would take 5 seconds– you went and installed a thousand-dollar ice rink?”
Cameron pursed his lips. “I couldn’t make an ice rink in my backyard. It wouldn’t be regulated.”
Rick groans, completely ignoring the way he’s seconds to wiping out on his ass to continue his anti-Mahkent campaign. “You have so much money and you’re wasting it!”
“You’re wearing a $400 dollar leather jacket that Mr. Chapel gave you.”
He scoffs. “No, I’m not!”
Beth circles around, helping Rick stand up straight. “Yes, you are.”
“.....oh.”
Cameron reaches over the edge and pulls out an orange construction cone. “Think you need this, man.”
Beth accepts it as Rick scowls.
On the opposite end of the rink, Yolanda tries to attempt a toe loop jump. She lands in a check position and throws her hands at the success. Courtney claps, and Cameron joins them, performing double axels on his way like it’s nothing.
“That’s pretty good, Yolanda.”
She shoots him a half-smile. “I didn’t think it would be this easy, but I guess after a year in the wildcat suit, I’m more agile than I thought.” She glances at Courtney. “That makes sense, right?”
Courtney shrugs as if to say Beats me. I don’t know how the wildcat suit works.
“How long have you been a skater, Cameron?”
“Uh…” Cameron scratches the back of his neck. “Two weeks?”
Yolanda’s mouth parts in an O-shape. “Why’d you go and get this then?”
“He wanted to practice his powers,” Courtney explains, looping her arm around his. “Safely,” she adds, in case that wasn’t clear. Cameron smiles at her, and Yolanda silently wonders if she’s going to be stuck being a tragic fifth wheel for the rest of her life.
“Rick!”
A crash sounds from the other end of the rink as the orange cone speeds toward them.
“...Should I help him?” Cameron wonders out loud as the three turn around to watch Beth struggle to haul Rick back up to his feet.
“Rick’s not accepting your help,” Yolanda says plainly. She skates towards Rick and Beth, grabbing onto his right arm as Beth takes his left. With the two of them, they manage to get Rick off his ass. The scowl is permanently etched onto his face now as he wipes frost from his pants, sulking. “I hate skating.”
Beth’s face brightens into an endeared pout. Rick clearly did not expect that reaction, surprised when Yolanda and Beth share a glance of amusement. Yolanda puts her hand on her hip. “What’s the matter, Rick? Can’t handle being bad at something that Cameron is good at?”
“What happened to you thinking you’d slice someone with your skates?” Rick mutters, betrayed.
Yolanda shrugs, skating backwards around Beth and Rick. “I got over it. You can too. It’s fun.”
Cameron laps around them, doing another complicated twisting jump as if to show off Yolanda’s point.
“That’s what I told him,” Beth tells her. She reaches forward and takes Rick’s hands. He looks up. “Forget Cameron’s figure skating moves,” Beth says. “And forget the orange cone. Don’t be embarrassed that you’re a beginner. You’ve never skated before. It’s normal. Why don’t you just hold onto me?”
Rick doesn’t pull away and doesn’t move to the bleachers, so it seems he’s willing to give it another try.
Yolanda holds in another eye roll and swiftly spins away before she can witness more Teen Romance On Ice. She grabs onto Courtney as she passes her by, tugging her sleeve. “Want to explore Cameron’s kitchen with me? We can get hot chocolate.”
“Yeah, I have lots of hot chocolate.” Cameron nods over to his huge house as his eyes turn white. He flicks his hand and forms an ice kiosk hot chocolate booth. Courtney and Yolanda gape at it. “You girls stay here, I’ll go get them.” Cameron doesn’t even remove his skates, leaving the rink and continuing to skate on freshly created ice underneath him.
Yolanda pinches her fingers together. “You have to admit, Court. Rick’s a little right. He is a show-off.”
“I don’t blame him! His powers are cool!” Courtney leans against the rink wall. “I think everyone deserves to show off once in a while.”
“I forgot who I was talking to,” Yolanda replies, but her voice is laced with affection. Finally, finally, Rick and Beth manage to get themselves over to the side where Courtney and Yolanda are talking.
“So?” She tries bouncing on her feet but the skates make it difficult. Courtney grins at her friends instead. “Wasn’t this a great idea?”
“It was,” Beth is quick to reply.
Yolanda nods.
Rick sighs. “It’s going to take a lot more than an overpriced ice skating party for me to be okay with Mahkent but…if you three are happy, I’m happy.”
Beth squeezes Rick’s hand. “You’re a good sport.”
“Yay!” Courtney rushes in for an awkward group hug, then tags Yolanda and bounds away. “Last one to the hot chocolate stand is on Pit Stop clean-up duty after our next JSA meeting!”

A Tag Game! Thank you so much @mybrainismelted for tagging me! <3
📺favorite tv show? This answer is likely to change, and while I do love Shameless (and feel like that's the anticipated response lol) it is not actually my favorite tv show. It's up there (especially seasons 1-4), but I think the dedication of fav tv show as of now has to go to The Queen's Gambit. Nothing inspired me the way that show did, I obsessed over it for over a year, I have approximately 4 billion pins on Pinterest of it, and the track for the Mexico City Invitational 1966 got me through one of the hardest exams of my life. I am going to answer the rest of the questions with Shameless though because TQG doesn't really have a lot of what these questions are asking.
🕴️ favorite character? (I am so excited that @mybrainismelted mentioned Sheila, because I LOVE her in Shameless, she was one of my favorite characters, too). My other favorite is Ian. He is a sweet boy who is always trying so hard, and my heart kind of breaks for him all the time (In TQG, my fav character is Beth Harmon, gotta love her).
💋favorite relationship in the show? Ian and Mickey.
👯♂️fav sibling relationship in the show? I adore Ian and Fiona. I feel like Ian was the last one who was her "baby brother," and not as much "her kids" (though they all were) and I think the way they saw each other was so sweet. I just -- when Fiona asks how her "sweetface" is doing I wanted to CRY. Fiona with any of her siblings (except maybe Debbie in later seasons) though is always fun to watch.
🎨favorite art form? Probably music.
⚡️a talent you wish you had? Digital art. I've tried, I want to be good at it, but I'm terrible and it feels weird, so I stick to pen and paper for drawing.
☀️what is one thing that can always make your day better? music. particularly hearing someone play the piano.
🎬favorite fictional character of all time? Of all time??? That's so hard. Probably Link from Legend of Zelda. I've followed many iterations of him over the years and he never fails to make me happy and entertain me for several hours.
🌅dream place to travel to? Also Iceland, haha -- I always wanted to see Reykjavík.
🎈you’re planning a huge party, what’s the theme? Unlikely to host a huge party, but if it was like a gala I'd try for a Night Circus Theme? that'd be cool. With my actual money threshold, though, something that makes me laugh. My friend hosted a Golden Girls party and it was a blast. Or honestly, Twilight never ceases to entertain.
🍕favorite pizza topping of all time? pepperoni
🥂you can pick ONE celebrity to have dinner with…who? Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She seems absolutely brilliant.
🎥favorite movie that you kinda know is bad but you still love? There are parts to Secondhand Lions that are not great (the flashbacks in particular, and the ending is corny as hell), but it is one of my favorite movies of all time.
👖how would you describe your style? I dress very farmery midwest, and admittedly a little camp counselorish. Lots of jeans, graphic tees, henley style longsleeves and tanks, flannels/oversized button downs, crew neck sweatshirts and three-quarter-zips; lots of layers.
🖤finally, something making you smile this week? my friends and I are doing practical magic midnight margaritas for new years and I am SO excited.
tagging @mmmichyyy, @michellemisfit, @callivich, @go-catch-a-chickn, and anyone who would like to participate!

Advent Day XIII ~ When Winter Comes Calling @goodlawman
When Raylan walks into the house, he is all but assaulted by the season. She has instrumental carols playing softly, though these hold more resemblance to her Irish roots than her Oceanic ones; after a moment it becomes apparent that they are genuine mountain music. The kitchen table is covered in trays of baked goods and one particularly lovely gingerbread house. The east corner of the roof has been picked at but otherwise it's rather lovely. There are some jars of shine, too. Food is in the oven, and there's gifts in a dozen stages of being wrapped or ready to be given all around the living room. All of them are marked from Santa, all of them destined for Harlan's less fortunate children. For the less fortunate adults, she's rented out three different motels from Solstice to Imbolc ~ December through February~ for those who have no homes, and she's done it under the names Frances and Helen McKinley. She wants to honour his family, the important women in his life, but she wants no credit to go to Arlo in any way. He's barely kicked the snow off his boots and his hat before she dashes toward him and leaps. Her legs wrap around his hips, her arms wind around his neck and her kisses are sweet and slow and welcoming. "You made it home." Beth wasn't expecting Raylan to be here til after the new year; such is the way of life when you're involved with a Marshal, but she knew what she'd been getting into and still had chosen him for her own. Maybe he's a gift from Art, maybe he's finally taking a little time for himself the way everyone's told him he should. Whatever the truth of it, he growls it low in his throat at her ear seconds before her back collides carefully with the door. There is a delicate dance to it all as they eventually spin away and get as far as the couch. Tender touches, soft sighs, all building until its claws and teeth and tangled limbs. Later, Beth sits in front of the fire place, wrapped in a throw blanket and wearing just his plaid over-shirt as he pulls on his Henley. "M' very proud of us…didn't even interrupt ches'nuts roastin'."
They'd collected those last time he'd spent the weekend here. "I do protect an' serve," he drawls with that sardonic smile of his and then draws her into his arms. They stay that way until the sky darkens. They talk about his latest case, and she catches him up with the things he's missed in town. Eventually she notes, "Is still snowin'. Guess we gonna have a white Christmas aftah-all." They both know what a rarity that is, and it gives them the excuse of tucking in close after she drops off the gifts tomorrow, with the help of a few families she's made friends with on the civic council. "Witch magick, or we just lucky, you think?" She smiles and shrugs her shoulders a little knowingly. "I s'pose I can live with that," he says and shakes his head. Then he gets to his feet, settles his jeans in place, an odd little gleam in his gaze. Tells her to wear something warmer than her skin, that he has a surprise for her. When she comes back down the stairs fully dressed but still in his shirt, Raylan has a large silver bowl in his hands. The shape of it and the patina on it suggests that it isn't a commercial item but something precious handed down the generations until it became his. One that will go on to become Willa's and so on. There's something sweetly charming about it though she can't say why. They make it out the door and now there's a half foot of snow untouched glistening in the porch light. He helps her pick her careful way down into the yard, and as he does he talks about his mysterious kin; a mamaw, a granny, his auntie Helen. He tells her that they ever reminded him that the first snow was poison and should never be taken. They stand buffeted by the frigid gusts while they wait til the bowl fills, though now and again he packs it down. She confesses she has no idea what he's talking about; snow is rare except for some of the tallest mountain peaks ~Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Haleakala~ and not exactly reasonable to get to. In New York the snow comes more often but also no matter how much of it falls, it will never be clean. They end up back inside while she sits at the counter, a hot water bottle wrapped in flannel to warm her hands and middle, Raylan offering a bit of mountain magic of his own. Into the bowl of pure snow he adds an entire can of sweetened condensed milk ~tells her she could do it with heavy cream and sugar in a pinch~ and a touch of vanilla. So very carefully he folds the mixture together until it forms a soft blended texture more like butter than a milk shake. She doesn't know how quite to describe it because it's neither shave ice nor anything else she knows. "Snow cream. A staple of old Appalachia," he tells her, holding a spoonful of her lips. "Honestly, I haven't thought about this in years."

going to start keeping track of scripts I read: first up-
Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley
Read this forever ago at a camp but recently skimmed it looking for monologues. and I kinda adore it? Makes me feel strong things, at some point I ought to genuinely go through and analyze it. I think it’d be fantastic to perform- the characters are all dealing with things that have huge impacts and it’s messy but still personal and relatable? It doesn’t have a clear solid ending but I love that and the openness of it. the sisters are maybe gonna try to be better to each other but I mean who knows? dude
#crimes of the heart#script#i dont know id just love to do a scene from here?#i did one when we originally read it but id love to again#reading scripts

Instead, it comes across as extremely realistic and grounded, which allows the comedy to flow. Everyone across the board brings their A-game to bring this really fresh and heartwarming comedy to life. If you’re a fan of films like ‘Trainwreck’ or ‘The Big Sick’, put on your joggers and sweatpants to run out and see this one. – Chris dos Santos Read Chris’ full article… https://www.maketheswitch.com.au/article/review-brittany-runs-a-marathon-literally-run-out-to-see-this-stellar-comedy Head to https://www.maketheswitch.com.au/sff for more Sydney Film Festival reviews. Columbusbuck: Brittany gets it right – that feeling you have in the pit of your stomach when you push away everyone who cares about you. A feeling I’ve had for a long long time. So self destructive. A 5-star movie, reflecting the reality of life, wouldn’t have a happy ending. This movie has one. But the first 60 minutes absolutely nails it.

ROGERS: The Musical
Chapter One: Aricka gets a Call
(Aricka and Steve Rogers, Aricka x Bucky Barnes, Aricka and the Avengers)
*now*
“Save the city
Help us win
Save us all from
The state we're in
Things look dark but
I know this can't be the end
Can’t be the end-!” Aricka grabs Aaron’s hands and kicks her legs out; spinning as he lifts her, and assuming a “hero” pose as she lands.
“Avengers unite-!” She shouts, performing a jazz square and twirling so she’s back to back with “Steve” aka Aaron,
“'Cause we've got to hear you say…” the avengers sing, as Aaron leans again Aricka, both looking at each other and singing,
“I could do this all day-!”
How did this happen-? Aricka thought with an exhilarated smile on her face; Aaron lifting her high in the air, her fist punching the air. From a workshop to the stage- this little idea of a tribute to her brother finally was taking off.
*then*
Aricka was lulling Sarah Beth to sleep, Kobik and RJ already asleep in their respective rooms. “Oh, the waves roll low
And the waves roll high
And so it goes
Under the bright blue
Endless Sky…”
She ran her fingers through silky blonde curls, Sarah fighting sleep as she cuddled her Bucky bear- a brown teddy bear dressed in an old Henley that belonged to Jamie.
“Waves try to measure
The days that we treasure
Wave hello
And wave goodbye…” finally, blue eyes shut and Sarah fell asleep with a soft sigh. Aricka stepped out of her youngest’s room and shut the door, startling slightly when she saw Bucky there, a soft little smile on his face. “Hi Jamie. She tried insisting on waiting til you finished the debriefing but I managed to get her to sleep.” She stepped into his space, wrapping her arms around him. “I’m so glad you’re back.”
“That makes two of us.” Just as he was about to say something else, her phone rang. Aricka frowned and accepted the call.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Mrs. Barnes?”
“This is she.” Bucky gave her a confused look, but she shrugged.
“Hi! This is Hunter Bell. We’re working on a musical tribute for your brother, and we were wondering with your musical expertise, would you be interested in playing yourself?”
Aricka gasps, seemingly frozen in place. Bucky gently gripped her arm, getting her attention.
“… it’s a Broadway producer- they’re making a musical about Steve- they want me to be- myself!”
Bucky’s lips tipped upwards in another of his heart melting smiles as he whispered, “Well-? Tell them yes-!”
She grinned. “When do I need to be there?”

Great addition! Also:
Although they sound similar, "would of" is incorrect. It is a misspelling of "would have". It doesn’t exist as grammatically correct phrase in English. Some people erroneously write would of instead of would have because that is how people pronounce the phrase in informal speech. When you contract would have to would’ve, it sounds similar to would of, so it’s an easy mistake to make.
Found this great article on the topic too:
"Of" is usually a preposition, but also may function as a verb, typically when used as a substitution for "have", as in ‘I could of written it correct, but wanted to see what you’d say if I didn’t.’
The reason for why of came to be used for have is that the latter word (and even more so its contracted form, seen in could’ve, should’ve, would’ve) is unstressed when spoken. There is very little phonetic difference between “I could’ve paid attention in English class” and “I could of paid attention in English class.” The spoken version of this is far more common than the written one, but there is considerable evidence of both.
This use, it should be noted, is widely shunned by usage guides, schoolteachers, people who send you annoying articles on social media about the declining state of education today, and well-nigh everyone else. So why do we define it? Because of that considerable evidence mentioned in the last paragraph.
A scouting report written by Captain Isaac Beall during the Revolutionary War contains a couple of our earlier instances of the word used in this fashion, illustrating that of, while not terribly common in writing at that time, has been with us for well over two hundred years now.
I was inform’d by a Capt’n of Molitia that about Two Hundred would be Imbodyed by Mondy Nite a plenty of Good Pilets are amongs them—if I could of been join’d by a party of the Molitia which I apply’d for I would of attacted the body that lay in the English Nabourhood, I had not a guid nor could Get non tell the Next day. —Isaac Beall, Letter to Adam Stephen, 20 Apr. 1777
The verb form of of begins to show up in print more often in the 19th century, generally when an author is attempting to replicate the speech of an uneducated person.
There lay the poor boy, dead enough: and all the doctors in Philadelphia couldn’t of been of no manner of service, so there warn’t any use in snivering and chafing. —Jabez Rankin, Spirit of the Times, 26 Dec. 1840 Now, old fellow, you might of heard that we like to have got into a war with the British about some boundary or other. —Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics, 5 Aug. 1843 The old man’s heart promptly quailed. He stood dumfounded and forgot Mandy and the other man’s wife in the face of his new foe. “If I’d of known it was you,” he said, “I wouldn’t of done it.” —The San Diego Union and Daily Bee, 3 Apr. 1893
The use appears to have been common enough that it was lampooned in an article in the late 19th century, along with questionable uses of the past tense of to do.
Possible past tense of verb done. Singular—I might, could, would or should of jest plumb done gone and done it. —The State (Columbia, SC), 16 Jul. 1893
There are many examples of prominent authors in the 20th century using forms such as could of, typically when rendered as dialogue.
I could of ended marrying the boy, and moving, and being killed, I think, as a punishment … I understand it. —David Mamet, A Scene-Australia (from No One Will Be Immune), 1994 Sure, I could of let you die, but I didn’t. Naw, I kept you with me—off and on. —Langston Hughes, Soul Gone Home (in The Collected Works of Langston Hughes: Vol. 5), 2002 I don’t know how you could of thought that when everybody knowed she’s been married—and she had a son. —James Baldwin, The Amen Corner, 1954 A lot of people cry. They could of heard it … anywhere. —Beth Henley, The Debutante Ball, 1991
The amount of written evidence produced over more than two centuries means that we are inclined to define a word, but it does not mean that we recommend that it be employed (unless, of course, it is for a desired effect).
