I’m reading books again and I’m remembering that I’m incredibly pretentious about writing. I forgive a lot of sins when reading fanfic for ALL the obvious reasons: they’re hobbyists, for fun, for FREE. But you put a printed book in my hand and tell me it’s a “New York Times bestseller,” I become the Gordon Ramsey of fiction writing. I’m writing scathing reviews in my head, I’m scoffing at tense choice, word choice, pacing choice. Oh, so you’ve chosen first person POV but then sucked the entire life out of the story by lazily listing out the events with zero emotion???

Praise for Katherine Rundell's new nonfiction bestiary of extraordinary animals, VANISHING TREASURES
“Whether she is writing about a jumping spider, a hedgehog, or the curious, pine-cone-like mammals known as a pangolin, Katherine Rundell stuns us with wonders. Each of her essays is a polished gem—and each will leave you newly smitten with love for life.” —Sy Montgomery, New York Times bestselling author of The Soul of an Octopus

I was going to start this post with, “not to brag..” but actually, that would be a lie. So let me begin truthfully:
To brag, the latest printing of my poetry book comes with an important additional line of text on the cover. Read it and weep, y’all! https://bit.ly/SomeThingsMC

Bought a really important book during my last week working at my local bookshop:
Refaat Alareer's If I Must Die: Poetry and Prose
"If I must die, you must live to tell my story."
You might have seen parts of Refaat's poem. This book includes this poem among other poetry and prose, published after Refaat's death.
Although it was published this past December, the first print run was TINY and many bookstores didn't get any copies until this month, January 2025, and even those are going fast.
All proceeds are going to support Refaat's living relatives. Please buy the book and support them, and read Refaat's words so you can tell his story.
(if your bookstore doesn't have copies on hand, ask if you can order! The publisher will print more if there is demand. Try to support local bookstores if you can, bc fuck am*zon)

I know at least a handful of local Indonesians follow me on here and I've already seen concerns over whether Lunar Boy is available in book stores after a recent take down of queer books. I'm here to assure you that as far as I know and from quickly checking, Lunar Boy is still available on periplus, tokopedia, and open trolley. While I know this is a frustrating time, please exercise patience to the staff working at these places- they're doing what they can.
I say this as someone who has to walk this tightrope between being vocal about queer representation online and in western spaces but also having to carefully navigate how things are in this country- keep this discreet and on the downlow, locally. I understand how the immediate reaction is to make recommendations lists or databases on other queer books to find and support, but right now it's clear someone is targeting these books and reporting them to be taken off shelves. I fear all this does is put a target on our books, and I don't want it to happen more than it already has. Imported books are hard enough to come by as is here.
I've already had book reviewers from the US ask permission to have Lunar Boy on recommendation lists, and that's fine! Feel free to add Lunar Boy on your lists. The accessibility of these books in western countries is a different story. But at home- locally- the motto is "tread lightly". Be cautious and discreet. Smaller things have caused huge moral panic and I think this is a precarious moment. Be safe out there.

It's that time again. You need a Hanukkah (or other) gift for someone in your family, and the data points you have are that they are peculiar, a reader, and/or simply gay and in need of something to make them not feel like wet garbage right now. (Alternatively, perhaps this is you.)
Let me recommend to you the one-size-fits-all: a short story collection by an indie author (perhaps even from an indie shop, where you can get it signed!), ranging from the very-short to the not-so-short, covering all manner of queer & monstrous folk trying to get by in a world that believes they are Not Right. Sometimes the problem is homophobia, and some of the time it is fuckoff giant robots. The day is not always saved, but there is hope aplenty and you will laugh as much as you cry. I wrote the first edition of this book very long ago now and there is a lot of youthful innocence and experimentation in it.
But don't take my word for it—check out the GoodReads or Storygraph reviews, or read three of the stories for free! More info (press and bonus buy links) here. Thank you for buying and sharing!

Now that I know more about writing, I'm upset at all the writing advice that urged new writers to find the one best way to write stories, when they should be telling us to play with writing techniques like toys.
Don't tell us to avoid certain points of view! Don't box us into the one currently popular prose style! Let us play and see what effects different techniques achieve, so we can learn the best ways to make use of them! Give us a whole ton of possibility instead of one cookie-cutter template!

was pinning each book from my Goodreads "To-read" shelf so that my grandma can access them, when suddenly Pinterest wouldn't let me pin anything. Not the AP Style Guide, not Sir Gibbie, nothing.
then in my Reports & Violations center, I discover they have deactivated my pin of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters by Abigail Shrier (which is a #1 bestseller) for "Hateful activities"
and now apparently I'm not allowed to pin anything at all

ok I’m not done taylorposting actually. Essentially what the bucktaylor breakup boils down to is that Buck stood in front of Taylor and said I am asking you to chose me over your job, I am asking you to love me more, and she chose the job instead. And Buck said ok. I am actually not okay with staying in this relationship where I will never ever come first. Understandable! Healthy even!! Hooray for Buck Buckley!!! And then Taylor said ok I can try to change, and Buck correctly recognized she wouldn’t. So they broke up. Again this is all entirely fair and good; the relationship wasn’t working.
But what is so crucial to me here is that if Taylor had ever gone and stood in front of Buck and said I am asking you to choose me over the 118. Buck would not have chosen her either. Buck and Taylor are both characters defined by their devotion. Both by their devotion to their jobs, even!! It’s just that for Buck this is because his job is all wrapped up in his idea of family and his personal sense of belonging and value, and for Taylor her job is wrapped up in her need for the truth and the answers because she’ll never ever get the one objective answer she’s desperate for. Fundamentally they both care deeply about the world and the people in it. Fundamentally they are both trying to help who they can and they see their jobs as their way to do that. Fundamentally they are two lonely hurt people desperate for love. People act like Taylor is this evil manipulative bitch but oh my god she and Buck are so similar it drives me insane. And their relationship doesn’t work! Because they both need someone to chose them and they’re never going to be fully able to chose each other, and Taylor breaking this story is just the catalyst for this becoming undeniable. But Taylor doesn’t do anything that Buck wouldn’t have performed some warped mirror version of if he were put in a comparable position

man do you know how it feels knowing that nothing your ever create for the rest of your life, no matter how much time you put into it or how well made it is, will ever be as widely seen as an intentionally-obnoxious 2017 shitpost referencing the movie Elf
