yall are about to piss me off by not having any PASSING basic knowledge of the way the u.s. military manipulates its recruits into joining by typing up one of your uninformed, unresearched, unempathetic, individualistic, unbelievably annoying posts about how 100% of the people in the military ended up there because they just Love America So Damn Much! they're extremely mature and informed at time of recruitment, they can totally leave anytime they want, they totally had tons of other avenues in life they could've taken, there was no rush at all to get income as fast as possible, and everyone in the military also totally is part of the combat divisions and personally enjoys being IN the military very much, big believers of violence. everyone in the military is shooting guns all day, that's how that works. they LOVE BLOODSHED. also I love the "amewicans haha" twang to this type of shit because you're actually TOTALLY stealing our Thing, which is turning systemic issues into Individual Issues. Instead of talking about the powers that be, it's so Personal Choice up in here. It's, "well you shouldn't have done it then. I totally wouldn't because I know better." you don't wanna talk about the military industrial complex as a whole, and you don't want to talk about recruiters, you just want to pin the blame on Specific Individual People one-by-one, as if they're responsible for the system that they're being ground up in. someone was in the military? bad person, no matter what. it's easier to believe that, I guess, than to acknowledge that Normal People (with high school educations) are manipulated and incentivized into joining a system that is Bad. at like age 18. but yeah no that 18 year old should have just been smarter lol haha anyway here are some screenshots for no particular reason

when i was about five, i briefly attended the less-fancy primary school of a really rather fancy private secondary school. very many things— in no small part, i’m sure, sheer expense— meant i moved on to normal + better comprehensives, but when i was in year eight, i ended up going to the aforementioned fancy secondary school for an event with a bunch of people from my year / tutor group. and i said on the way that one of the things i remembered vaguely from my time around it was that they used to have two peacocks(!!) roaming the grounds. well, when we got there, no peacocks. my friend sniffed and said ‘yeah. they probably ate them.’ once we got back from the black marble columns and so on, we went up and touched the g4s breezeblocks that they’d built my darling secondary school out of as if they were beloved friends. ‘it’s built like a prison,’ my friend said, for the first time affectionately. no peacocks at my secondary, but we had a cat who wandered round

I think one of my students, a 78-year-old Korean woman, has been closeted her entire life. Just... some of the things she's said. We've known each other for a year, now, and I've heard lots of her stories. I love hearing her stories. I think she sees herself in me, and she's often told me that she views me as a daughter. Many of her stories are about her feeling different than other women, and noticing that I'm also different than other women.

I know the state of feminism in Korea today isn't uhhhh, isn't what I personally would be happy with. So I can't imagine what it would've been like growing up in Korea in the 50's, on a mountain with no electricity, the first time ever seeing a movie being when you went on a field trip in middle school. Probably pretty isolating.

I have a tendency to be protective over her when I think about her, like she's a child. But this is a grown woman with children of her own. And when I'm actually with her, I'm reminded she's just another human trying to figure shit out in whatever way she can.

Obviously I'm just speculating based on some of the things she's said to me, but, I guess the point of this story is that... There are old Korean women out there making friends with young American women (am I still young?), bridging generational and cultural differences, and finding commonality and genuinely finding connection and enjoying each others company.

Maybe me living my life so openly "different" is somewhat validating for her, even if she was never able to figure out quite why she felt so different in the first place.

I used to bite my nails all the way up until college but I always hated how cross they looked

I got out of the habit by instead using nail clippers whenever I got the urge so at least they'd be neat

Sometimes I do over-groom them and end up injuring myself oops but I vastly prefer this than how gross they looked before

Also what if tumblr didn't know what city Im in. I do not want my location tracked or stored anywhere unless I give explicit ongoing permission, like with my GPS app that I allow to track me only when the app is open, and then it deletes the data (allegedly) when I stop giving permission.

I think the thing that just continues to astound me about ttrpgs is the fact that people who meet up and are friends outside of the game just... refuse to try anything other than 5e? I've seen so many stories about DMs asking players to try a new system, and they just refuse.

Why? I mean if you come into the night like fully expecting to play 5e but instead they throw something new at you, I get that being frustrating. But I'm talking about DMs asking ahead of time for something new and being refused.

Hello???? These are your friends, you're like 99% going to have a good time even if all you guys can manage is rolling up characters. And 9 out of 10 times its another d20 system so the rules really are not that different.

We started out with 5e, played a full 1-20 campaign and did lots of oneshots. And you know what we all said when our DM, the guy who helped bring the world to life who does the most WORK, asked us to try a new system? We said, "Absolutely dude!"

And ya know what? We had fun! We made mistakes, we had to recheck rules, but we had fun! In fact, it was like playing for the first time again! That exact same sense of wonder and fun!

And guess what? We liked it more than 5e! Its our new standard go to system! We try out other systems occasionally too! And if we had hated it and the other ones? Well, 5e is still right there and we could go back at any time!

Anyway, all this to say, try something new. I mean ideally I want you to try something outside of DnD editions, but honestly just try anything outside of 5e. I promise, if you hate it 5e will still exist.
