okay this got. far too long by accident (apparently i had more thoughts than i thought) so it's going under a cut oops!!!! apologies for how all over the place it is
gonna start off with just saying my version of nerd diverges a bit from pretty much all the other versions out there– while it riffs on the wiki version for a lot of it over the past 6 months they've really become my own thing 😆
starting off with disability moments bc i think about it a lot!!! has eds imo, and gets hit with cfs/me post superallergic because like. yeah lets be real it's right there
unlike declan, uses their wheelchair both on and off the field!! will also sometimes use forearm crutches depending on the day but overall pretty frequently uses mobility aids imo
i forget how common this is but. grew up in utah closer to salt lake city. has complicated feelings about it. has complicated feelings about moab too.
is living in dec and ruthless's old apartment– ruthless offered it to them when they fell
black and ashkenazi, not particularly observant but grew up with judaism in like. the background if that makes any sense??
had a somewhat complicated relationship with hurley before their death– i think the two of them are just far apart enough in age that they weren't like. super super close but did love each other and they did take it hard when they died
is unfortunately in love with famous owens and questions every choice they've made in their life that's brought them to this point weekly
(but also. is blown away at the way they've learned to be vulnerable with each other, the way they fit into their side and their apartment and their life like it was inevitable and maybe it was)
we keep referring to frankie, nerd and torus as the blunt rotation because they're all stacked together in the midfield and while i don't think that's literal i do think the three of them have gotten quite close at this point
also has another trio going with yosh and parra (and sometimes rosales. it depends). guys who have been here too long
stats wise absolutely refuses to field double plays despite being our best defender??? assigned conservation of energy by the sim i literally think about it too fucking much
people from their old teams they're still talking to: hank. zack. malik. haruta but it's complicated. tiana. jeff de la cruz but it's also complicated.
helped with urban planning after they fell to help rebuild a post-great fire chicago!! still is with a lesser extent but is also on like. three different municipal committees atm! does not actual firefight– this is the way they've responded to the call.

Arise
I awoke in the desert on Easter morning. Through the window of my tent, I could see branches of a pinion pine, the sharp tines of a yucca, and beyond them soft, rolling sandstone — in full daylight the color of oatmeal, but glowing golden now with first light. The birds were up, rejoicing, flitting to and fro in the pinion, but, thanks be to God, not another living thing could be seen or heard. I had awakened on my fifth morning in Arches National Park, hidden near the northeast corner of Utah, but it could have been Palestine around ad 33. This desert is not a wasteland, as many people wrongly picture when they hear the word, but a vibrant place full of grasses, cacti, juniper, and pinion, and wildflowers scattered across the landscape, a place where you can find puma prints in the soft, wet sand down in the canyons, where springs nearly reach the surface. A place of life in many ways.
It was cold enough to see my breath when I stepped out of the tent, so I cranked the Coleman stove to set water boiling for coffee and cocoa before I roused the boys, cocooned head-and-all down in their sleeping bags. Savoring moments that were mine alone, I climbed to the top of the rocks behind our camp to drink in the vast beauty of the desert at dawn. To the west, gigantic mesas, Navajo sandstone, rose like ancient fortresses from the desert floor, their sheer red cliffs radiating back the rays that had not reached the sands at their feet.
I turned to the east to take the glad warmth of the new day head-on, surprised to see the La Sal Mountains covered in snow, a hundred miles away. My heart was at home in this place of wild beauty and staggering vistas. But it was an awkward time to have come. On this resurrection morn, Stasi was in Los Angeles, holding the hand of her dying mother. She would be gone in less than a month. Strange timing to up and go camping. But God brought me here.
Like many pilgrims down through the ages, I discovered my spiritual life in the desert. I found solitude and silence in the Mojave of southern California, far from the numbing sameness and suffocating density of the suburbs that warehouse millions of people. The desert awakened my heart, and I discovered freedom of spirit walking across the arroyos for hours upon end, haunted by stark beauty and the thin veil of heaven there. No wonder Moses, Elijah, and John the Baptist spent their free time in the desert. And though the desert meant so much to me, spoke to my heart, I left it behind many years ago. You know how life pickpockets you of these things, slipping them away so subtly you never even notice they are gone. I simply stopped going.
In the spring of 2001, Stasi was making frequent trips to southern California to be with her mom, whom we were losing to multiple myeloma, and I was doing my best with the boys and the bills back home in Colorado. To be honest, we were simply waiting for “the call,” when we would jump a flight to attend Jane’s funeral. So I did not believe it was God when first I heard him say, Go to Moab. Go to the desert. It took several confirmations to get my attention. At a coffeehouse I ran into a young gal who in the midst of chitchat simply dropped into the conversation that she’d just returned from Moab. I did a sort of double take, then asked calmly, “How was it?” “Great,” she said. “You have to go.” The next day I was on the phone with a pastor from Denver, making plans for a men’s retreat. “I just got back from Moab,” he said, out of the blue. “It was awesome.” I’m simply confessing that I came to the desert borne not on the wings of my own wisdom, but hesitantly, reluctantly, pushed along by God.
Moab. Okay. The boys are missing Mom and the distraction would be good and there’s really nothing more we can do from here anyway except pray, which I might give more devotion to out in the wild, and so we came. I was surprised at the level of warfare I had to fight through. For about five hours of the drive I was forced to bring the work of Christ against an overwhelming oppression that made it hard to concentrate, a really awful veil over my spirit. Over a camping trip? It seemed so stupid. But the thief comes to steal and kill and destroy any movement toward freedom and life. We battled through, got there late, and discovered that God had held the last campsite for us.
I’m not sure I can even put into words all that Jesus restored to me in those five days, but some part of my heart long forgotten was given back, along with some deep words I desperately needed. I came alive in the vast, wild desert. And it began to sink in.
My heart matters to God. My heart has always mattered to Him.
It is one thing to say we believe that; it is another thing to discover it is true. This was a gift unique to my heart, and it could not have been given in any other place. I awoke that Easter morning more alive than I have been in a long, long time.

Treating Your Heart for the Treasure It Is
Above all else, guard your heart. — Proverbs 4:23
We usually hear this with a sense of “keep an eye on that heart of yours,” in the way you’d warn a deputy watching over some dangerous outlaw, or a bad dog the neighbors let run. “Don’t let him out of your sight.” Having so long believed our hearts are evil, we assume the warning is to keep us out of trouble. So we lock up our hearts and throw away the key, and then try to get on with our living. But that isn’t the spirit of the command at all. It doesn’t say guard your heart because it’s criminal; it says guard your heart because it is the wellspring of your life, because it is a treasure, because everything else depends on it. How kind of God to give us this warning, like someone’s entrusting to a friend something precious to him, with the words: “Be careful with this — it means a lot to me.”
Above all else? Good grief — we don’t even do it once in a while. We might as well leave our life savings on the seat of the car with the windows rolled down — we’re that careless with our hearts. “If not for my careless heart,” sang Roy Orbison, and it might be the anthem for our lives. Things would be different. I would be further along. My faith would be much deeper. My relationships so much better. My life would be on the path God meant for me… if not for my careless heart. We live completely backward. “All else” is above our hearts. I’ll wager that caring for your heart isn’t even a category you think in. “Let’s see — I’ve got to get the kids to soccer, the car needs to be dropped off at the shop, and I need to take a couple of hours for my heart this week.” It probably sounds unbiblical.
Seriously, now — what do you do on a daily basis to care for your heart? Okay, that wasn’t fair. How about weekly? Monthly?
Yes, we do have a cultural scrap of this called vacation. Most working-class folks get a week or two off each year, and that is the only time they actually plan to do something that might be good for their souls. Or they squander the scrap on some place like Miami, as a poor man spends his last dollar on a lottery ticket. And you know how it goes when you get back. The attitude among your family, friends, and colleagues is usually something like, “Great! You’re back! Hope you had a good time ’cause, boy, everything fell apart while you were gone and we’re expecting — now that you’re rested up — that you’ll really put your nose to the grindstone.” Whatever that week gave you is devoured in a matter of moments or days.
But God intends that we treat our hearts as the treasures of the kingdom, ransomed at tremendous cost, as if they really do matter, and matter deeply.

His comment made her crack a grin. "You'd think," She answered back, her tone carrying just a hint of playfulness to it. Okay, so 'pretty good' was an understatement, at least for what Pietro could do. But she'd never seen them live, and live performances separated the "pretty good" from the "fucking great", at least in her opinion. As for whether she was good or not- she wasn't sure if he meant that to be a jab or if he was actually just curious. She wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, though. She tried not to assume the worst of people. "I think I am. Though I don't have super speed, so..." No doubt he could outplay the best of the best with as fast as he could move. Still, though, her band, despite being just "up and coming", so to speak, tended to turn heads, and her skills had been praised plenty, even by the occasional music critic (or those who thought of themselves as music critics). She didn't like to brag, but she'd put a lot of time into learning how to play and her dedication and passion for the art showed. It was the one thing she felt especially confident in.
Unfortunately, one of the places she fell short in was reading people. She wasn't entirely sure what to think of Pietro, honestly. He was arrogant, obviously, but he'd still been kind enough to come to her aid. That single act of kindness deserved plenty of praise on its own. Again, she tried not to assume the worst. He didn't seem to have any ill intent, at least... Then again, she'd picked up on how rapid fire his thoughts were even just from brushing the surface of it. Even if she'd wanted to read more into what he was thinking, she'd never be able to keep pace. She just had to hope for the best here.
Don't get used to it. Oh, she wouldn't. In fact, she was already trying to run through plans in her head on what to do next, fully assuming he'd cut and leave soon enough. Then she'd be on her own. At least now, though, she'd know that they were after her. She wouldn't let them take her by surprise again. Hopefully. She looked back at Pietro when he mentioned her home probably wasn't safe and offered him a nod in agreement. He'd picked up on the fact that it was more than just a simple mugging and she wasn't going to deny it, either. Their whole aim had been to drag her off somewhere they could kill her and dispose of her body.
She shook her head to clear her mind of the thought- he was right that her home wasn't safe, and she didn't have any plans to go there, anyway. He'd caught her in a bit of a lie, it seemed. Unless he really thought her dumb enough to just... go home after all this. "Truth told, I'm not really sure where is safe," But she'd figure something out. She didn't have much choice. "I've been warned about people like them all my life, but never thought something like this would actually happen..." She all but muttered the words, speaking more to herself than to Pietro. She'd have to contact her dad, be sure he was safe, too. After all, if they had found her, they were only one step off from finding him. He was a hell of a lot stronger than her, though. He could likely take care of himself. Yet that didn't stop her from worrying.
She didn't hesitate to let him take the phone from her. He'd helped her this far and, though it might be naive of her to trust him this quickly, she felt like she didn't have many other options. She was as good as dead without him. At least with his help, if he was really offering it, she stood a chance. Even so, she hesitated for a second before she tucked everything back into the wallet. He didn't have much else on him. Well, except a handful of concealed weapons that he'd never even had a chance to unsheathe. "I don't know what I'd do with any of it, anyway. So..." She offered the wallet over to him. "If you know someone who could help, I'm not gonna turn down the offer. He's got 4 different IDs in there. All fake. His real name is Jacob Carlisle. Age 36. Born in Moab, Utah on April 17th. Currently lives on the outskirts of Jasper, Arkansas. He's married with two kids. One is 8. The other's barely a year old." She had plenty more on him than just that, but something about him being a father of two young kids and still being willing to come out here and murder someone else's child settled ill with her. It also made her not want to see him killed, even if it might be better if he was. That was as close, for the moment, as she was gonna get to telling him what she was or what she could do. She didn't want him to know everything, after all. She still didn't entirely trust him. "He's been following me for months. I don't know how I didn't notice..." She'd been blissfully off in her own world, she supposed. And he was plain enough that he fit right into the crowd without raising any suspicion. Considering she'd never had a run in like this before, she hadn't even known what she should have been looking out for... or to look out for it at all.
"I'm gonna go check on the other two. Um... he's still pretty well loaded with weapons, by the way," She warned Pietro. Not that the guy could do anything with them now, but, even so she wanted to be sure he knew. No doubt he could find and gather them all off the unconscious body faster than she could have. And with that, she moved on to the next, following the same routine, though without bothering to search him for his belongings- again, Pietro could do that faster than she could, and she was just gonna hand it all over to him, anyway. She focused, instead, on carefully running through his mind and cutting or changes memories where she could with a brush of her fingertips against his forehead. Then she wove nightmares for him, too. The last of the men got the same treatment, though by the time she was through with him she felt like a mess. The other two had had plenty of fucked up thoughts. His, though, had shaken her so terribly she felt sick. Still, she tried not to make it too obvious. She was desperately trying to play it cool, calm, and collected. The last thing she needed was to lose focus or to burden Pietro more by dissolving into a sobbing mess, even if every last nerve was nearing frayed. She never condoned murder. And yet a part of her was aching to kill him for the horrible things he'd done, for the horrible things he'd planned to do.
Still seated on her knees in the snow beside the last of the unconscious bodies, she didn't feel like she could stand up just yet. She pressed her eyes closed tight and took a deep breath, then focused back on Pietro. "So, uh... I don't really know what to do next..." She admitted. She'd never been put in this position before, clearly. She didn't have a clue where to go or what she should be doing. Hell, she was still mostly just internally panicking over the whole situation. She looked fairly calm on the outside, but her heart was racing so fast she felt a bit dizzy. "Any suggestions?"
"You would think saving your life would get me something more than 'pretty good'." It had been a long time since he had done something dangerous like this. Not that it was any sort of challenge for him, but it still got his blood and ego pumping more than they normally would. And that was already a rather massive ego.
Pietro didn't really know how to talk to her, or someone who had just been through what she had. She mainly seemed put together about being attacked, not curled up in some ball crying her eyes out. Or ask him questions about his powers or how he did what he did. If she had trauma and was a mess, she did a good job of hiding it.
"Are you any good?" That was a loaded question. He didn't mean it as one or for it to come off as rude as it probably sounded, but to him it was small talk. She was a musician like himself. Maybe he wouldn't be so quick to run off if he had a connection like that. But really the whole situation would keep his attention on her, a good deal of him wanted to know why she was being hunted.
It made him think of the mutants he had saved before. In another life. A life he was supposed to have left behind.
His training would kick in again, knowing if a group like this could track her down on the street, he home probably wasn't safe. Would she take up any offer for Pietro to give her a safe place? She had just seen him take down her attackers in the time it took for her to blink. She had seen him catch a bullet out of the air. He was infinitely more dangerous than they were.
Insert a witty and clever line about how he was just in the area. Or something about how he is actually always in the area. Because, you know, super speed. Or something about how he moves faster than his music. Anything would be good. "Don't get used to it." Anything but that would have been a good thing to say. But he just had to play up the asshole angle. "Your home probably isn't safe. Unless I'm looking at this wrong, and it really is just a simple mugging where they didn't try to get your money and looked like they just wanted you put down." Like an animal. Like a mutant.
He watched her as she rooted around, leaning against the wall to finish off his cigarette. The part that intrigued him was what she was doing with her hand on their foreheads. That wasn't normal. Maybe there was something hiding underneath for her. Something he would need to know if he was going to try and help her.
Pietro dashed over to snatch it out of her hand, looking at it momentarily before pocketing it, "I have someone to help. That is if you're willing to trust me enough to hand over the rest of the things you got from them." Mystique was good at things like that, but it would mean he would owe her a favor. That was something he wanted. At all. The girl would be worth taking on that burden.

Finds from the Drug Store in Moab, Utah

I'm leaving to go back home today, and I will say, it's been fun. Some unnamed friends shoplifting, N getting up to crazy shenanigans (punching a tree, buying a wood sword, and climbing on the edge of a cliff are up there on the list) and making some new friends on the way (Thank you to Miss Marla for allowing our attempted break in and showing us the place in my Wasteland Baby post), (and a great big thanks to the racecar driver who gave us our Jeep tour and scared us half to death with your 'the breaks aren't working' and 'oh no we're sliding off the edge' jokes).
Mostly I'll miss the abundance of ravens. They were lovely.
Reflecting on the trip, I think I could do this forever. Maybe not the driving part, because God, that long ride makes me ill, but travelling. Setting up a tent and moving forever. The Nomadic lifestyle seems like one that would suit me well. Meeting people, seeing new things... I would only miss the company of my lover, and best friend. Maybe after school, I'll likely be alone anyway.

So if you look at this map of Utah, Everything south of the yellow line is pretty much the best place to live in the state. The populations are pretty low, the places are mostly public land and really great. St. George is the biggest population center which is 12 miles south of me. Cedar is really nice too. Moab aint too bad but I'm not overly fond of it. Beaver is a good place to look at too or going east towards Richfield and Salina.
So how's Utah for people that just aren't religious? Figure I can cover up the druidry long enough for people to like me as a person then drop that bomb.

A PILGRAMAGE AND POOPING AT A MONOLITH
OK you monolith lovers, look what you've done. You have pooped all over the desert. This is the kind of s--t you can expect from people. The mysterious monolith in the Southern Utah desert was unknown until a state helicopter team spotted it in a small, remote drainage, placed there, no doubt, by aliens. (It appears on Google Earth in 2016.) As if seeking Mecca, the pilgrimage was on — followed by pooping, as though to bless or pay homage to the obelisk. Fortunately, four wise men from Moab tore out the mysterious marker before the fragile desert ecology was lain asunder by — you guessed it — poop. Coincidentally or not, strange monoliths appeared in California and Romania, leading some to believe it was a marketing scam of some kind. Faster than you can say, MONOLITHISTS without lisping, an anti-monolith group sprouted up, making all kinds of claims — but none about mail-in voting. Nonetheless, why would aliens need a marketing scheme when they've got Rudy Giuliani? It's all strangely similar to Stanley Kubrick's film, “2001: A Space Odyssey,” where apes gather around a cryptic obelisk, leading the staff here at Smart Bomb to conclude the similarities with Utah are not accidental. There is just one sticking point — the apes didn't poop there.
THE UTAH SPACE FORCE RESERVES WANTS YOU!
For cool. Utah may soon be on the ground floor of the U.S. Space Force (cue the Star Wars music) and you, yes you, could be part of it if Utah Representative-elect Jefferson Burton, R-Utah County, gets his way and makes it part of the state code creating the Utah Space Force Reserve. This should give you goose bumps almost equal to those when Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann announced they could produce “cold fusion” in a Best Foods Mayonnaise jar — at room temperature, no less. The legislature quickly created the National Cold Fusion Institute at the University of Utah (it really did happen), but alas, no one, not even Stanley and Martin, could reproduce the miracle and the institute died a very slow, embarrassing and expensive death. Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist and author, told the D News that a common belief among them is: “Only by turning the U.S. into a Christian nation will we see gun violence decrease.” Because then all the good guys will have killed all the bad guys. In the name of Wayne LaPierre, amen.
Post script — That was the week that was — but where to begin? Trump is holding the nation hostage and most Republicans are abetting his alternative reality that has swept up a good number of Americans with it. How they can believe a massive conspiracy cost Trump the election by a significant margin is hard to grasp. But Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels said this: “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.” Until now, we could never understand why the Germans got behind Adolf Hitler. Now we know. It's a rude awakening to realize that almost half of the electorate voted for a man who couldn't give two shits about democracy. If they don't believe that Trump is absolutely insane by now, they never will. And so it goes. Some 280,000 Americans have now died of Covid and the models suggest that number could be 400,000 by March. Still, many Americans have a devil-may-care attitude oblivious that they could be spreading the deadly virus. Freedom to be crazy is bumping head-on into democracy. As Benjamin Franklin said in 1787 as he walked out of the Second Continental Congress, You've got “a republic if you can keep it.”
Well Wilson, this is a fine mess we find ourselves in. What can you and guys give us to bolster our spirits in these dark days of winter:

A Half-Day Drive from Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley
Dunton Hot Springs | This romantic 1800s ghost town has been restored into private cabins, complete with hot springs and an on-site lounge and restaurant. This is mountain luxury at its finest. Prepare to get off the grid and take a step back in time.
Hoodoo Moab | Kaleigh notes that this brand new Hilton hotel is, “such a nice property at a great price.” You can easily visit Arches National Park by day and enjoy the pool and on-site restaurant by night.
The Broadmoor | A Colorado classic, this resort features great amenities and is close to Pikes Peak, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Seven Falls. With plenty of room options, a bounty of restaurants to choose from, and activities such as golf, pool, and tennis, this is an easy staycation spot the whole family will enjoy.
Madeline | For a different ski scenery, Kaleigh recommends the Madeline in Telluride. This ski-in/ski-out Auberge property even has a private kids lounge and an ice rink. Bonus: This could easily pair up with a stay at Dunton Hot Springs.

A Full-Day Drive from Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley
Four Seasons Santa Fe | Kaleigh notes that she loves this property, “for families staying a little longer and looking to do more outdoor things.” Located just a bit outside the city, it has more of a resort feel.
Brush Creek Ranch | Head north to Wyoming and settle into a ranch if you’re looking for a place that has a larger feel than Dunton Hot Springs. This all-inclusive 5-star property sits on 30,000 panoramic acres and offers an authentic ranch experience for the whole family.
Lodge at Blue Sky | Park City is just a state away and this Western getaway is easy to call home for a few days. A contemporary, luxury resort, it’s considered an outdoor playground. Lolo Pass, Idaho: historical site in the Bitterroot Mountains where Lewis and Clark passed during their explorations.
Berkeley Pit Mine, Berkeley, Montana: one of the largest and most expensive Superfund pollution sites in America.
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, wild bison, and more at America’s first national park.
Medicine Wheel, Big Horn National Forest, Wyoming: a Native American religious site, thousands of years old and still used today.
Crazy Horse Memorial, Crazy Horse, South Dakota: still carving a mountain into the likeness of the famous warrior.
Ken’s Minerals & Trading Post, Custer, South Dakota: a nice rock shop where we probably bought too much.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Keystone, South Dakota: four stony-faced presidents carved into a mountain.
Wall Drug Store, Wall, South Dakota: famous for its free ice water and legions of billboards.

Flint, Michigan: site of a serious water crisis that symbolizes all kinds of issues around government, racism, and economics.

Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut: we drove through the campus, so the kids can now say they went to Yale.
Jersey City, New Jersey: to visit relatives.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: climbing the “Rocky Steps” and enjoying genuine Philly Cheesesteak.
Washington, DC: the White House; monuments to Lincoln and Washington; memorials for World War II and Vietnam; the Holocaust Museum; the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum; the Museum of the Bible; the U.S. Capitol; and more.
Rotunda, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia: Thomas Jefferson’s historic building at the university he founded.
Claudia Sanders Dinner House, Shelbyville, Kentucky: the original KFC.
Farmington Historic Plantation, Louisville, Kentucky: owned by the Speed family, who had ties to Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington.
Kentucky Derby Museum, Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky: learning about the legends of the sport, as well as the money.
Gateway Arch, St. Louis, Missouri: as seen from the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park, East St. Louis, Illinois.
Pappy’s Smokehouse, St. Louis, Missouri: considered by some to be the best BBQ ribs in the country.
Percival, Iowa: a farm community representative of flooding that has plagued the Midwest this year.
Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, Omaha, Nebraska: the world’s biggest zoo did not disappoint.
World’s Largest Ball of Twine, Cawker City, Kansas: yep.
Pike’s Peak, Cascade, Colorado: one of the most famous mountains in America, and at 14,000+ feet, the highest we’ve ever been outside of an airplane.
Mesa Verde National Park, Mesa Verde, Colorado: amazing cliffside homes built almost a thousand years ago by Native Americans.
Four Corners Monument, Teec Nos Pos, Arizona: where you can stand (or sit, or bounce a ball) in four states at once.
Arches National Park, Moab, Utah: beautiful, alien rock formations.
Moab Isolation Center Ruins, Moab, Utah: site of a Japanese internment concentration camp during World War II.
Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center, Jensen, Utah: seeing and touching the fossils of giant dinosaurs, still embedded in the ground.
Temple Square, Salt Lake City, Utah: Mormon HQ.
Great Salt Lake State Park, Magna, Utah: the city’s namesake, and some of the saltiest water on earth.
ATK Rocket Garden, Northrop Grumman, Corinne, Utah: examples of various rockets and missiles, including Space Shuttle booster engine parts.
As I emphasized to the kids over and over, we are only seeing a glimpse of everything. We could spend a week or more visiting many of these places.
We also stopped in all of the following states, including our beginning and end:

Does DC count as a separate state? Maybe.  The kids did their trip activities there. And if you want to count New Mexico and Arizona from our visit to Four Corners, then we’re up to 34 states... though the kids did not do their activities there.
We didn’t go to North Dakota, choosing South Dakota instead for our eastbound trip.  And we didn’t realize it until it was too late, but we completely forgot about visiting Rhode Island. Sorry, Rhode Islanders!  Ironically, it is the only state that actually has the sound of “road” in its name.
Of course, as I asked in one of the FAQs... Does It Really Count As “Visiting” A State If You Only Drive Through A Little Piece Of It?

For SUP fans, it’s not a summer road trip to the mountain states without your inflatable paddle board! By talking to the locals or doing a little research in advance, you’re sure to discover many hidden gems along the way. Whether you’re planning a trip for this summer or future summers, here are a few paddle boarding spots you won’t want to miss in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. The mountains are calling, and you must go.

More Than Just Mountain Biking: Moab, Utah Moab is a major desert destination for mountain bikers, off-roaders, and other outdoor enthusiasts. But don’t forget your board because there’s plenty of water around town, too. The Moab Daily (Fishers Tower section) is a popular 13-mile stretch of the Colorado River. It floats by the backdrop of the LaSal Mountains and eventually into the boundaries of Arches National Park. Located along Highway 128, there are plenty of easy put-in and take-out spots. The Moab Daily offers flat sections and rapids for some excitement during the summer months. The City of Trees Delivers: Boise, Idaho Beautiful Boise, Idaho is considered a high desert terrain, but there’s definitely more than meets the eye in The City of Trees. People love their water sports in the Boise area. You can take your inflatable paddleboards on sections of the Boise River, which runs along the Greenbelt in the heart of the city. For something even mellower, there are plenty of in-town ponds that are perfect for paddling boarding, such as Quinn’s Pond. Or head out toward Lucky Peak State Park and paddle the Boise River below the dam at Sandy Point. Bring a picnic and hang out at Discovery Park when you’re done. Cruise Among the Tetons: Jackson, Wyoming Jackson is an epic place to visit and if the grandeur of the Tetons is calling, you’ll have a blast exploring the lakes in Grand Teton National Park. String Lake is calm and more shallow than other lakes in the park and an ideal setting for beginners. Jenny Lake, also in the national park, is another great spot for beginners where you’ll be captivated by the surrounding Teton peaks. This lake is over 400 feet deep. Jackson Lake is the largest lake in the park and a perfect spot for more experienced paddle boarders. There’s a lot of boat activity on this lake, so be aware. Miles of Flathead Lake: Kalispell, Montana Cold, sparkling, and huge, Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. There are many ways you and your friends can explore Flathead Lake from atop your inflatable paddleboards. If you’re staying in Kalispell on your way to Glacier National Park, opt for a sunset paddle boarding session on the northern part of Flathead Lake. Set off from Wayfarers State Park, an ideal location with great access. Just watch out for the Flathead Lake Monster, a tale that goes back over 100 years.
