When Worlds Collide - Song Mingi
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Mingi has always been a free-spirited individual. Maybe that is why he liked America so much because of the boundless opportunities that were in front of him. Or maybe he just liked America because that's where you are.
Pairing: idol! Song Mingi x reader
Genre: Fluff, strangers first encounter
Word Count: 1.9k
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Mingi was walking around the streets of New York City aimlessly. He had a pair of glasses on, trying his best to enjoy time off and blend into the crowd. Ateez were performing in the city as part of a concert acknowledging the migration of Koreans to the United States and highlighting the impact of Korean culture.
Each of the boys were choosing to venture on their own for the day, as the concert wasn't until the next day. Mingi has always been fascinated with life here in America. From the fashion, the night life, and the hustle of the American way, he's always wanted to be a part of it in some aspect. That's one of the reasons why he loved getting to perform here in the States. He loved seeing how excited people were, especially atinys, were for a concert.
Today, he just wanted to see what life would be like if he was an American. He was grateful for the opportunities and experiences he got to experience as a k-pop idol when they come to visit, but it wasn't the same. He didn't want to be followed by paparazzi or have bodyguards around him. Mingi didn't want himself to be photographed. He wanted to be the one just soaking it all in, so it all just lived in his memory. He knew if he kept a low enough profile, he would be in the clear and be able to get a real feel for life here.
Wondering the streets, he let his senses guide him. He didn't have to be back at the hotel until 8pm for dinner with his members. They already had dress rehearsals for the show tomorrow, so he really had all the time he could have wanted. His eyes bounced along the store fronts, trying to se which one tempted him the most.
He passed by numerous bakeries, apartment buildings, boutiques, and restaurants. Mingi loved seeing the smiles on people's faces as they lived their ordinary lives. It made him a bit envious, how people didn't have to worry about being spotted and being potentially mobbed at a moment's notice. He wished he could be more aloof, but he was also blessed to have such an extraordinary opportunity of being able to perform on stage.
Mingi glanced to his right but stopped dead in his tracks. He heard the sounds of rock music coming from his right, gaining his full attention. He smiled slightly whenever he saw a record shop. However, his full attention locked on someone inside. You.
You were standing over a display of records, fingers gently pushing back record sleeves to see them all. You were wearing a black peacoat with a grey beanie on top of your head. The beanie didn't hide your curls from his view. He found himself captivated how your eyelashes touched your cheeks as you glanced down. Your cheeks were a light pink color, maybe from the heat coming from inside the store. You also wore a soft smile curled onto your lips. He had to know your name.
As one patron was about to step out, he quickly grabbed the door and held it open. The young woman smiled and thanked him, for which he nodded and smiled back. He glanced in to see you a bit better, at least better from staring in from a window. Mingi felt his stomach flutter as you began moving your way down, a bit closer to him.
Perfect. He stepped into the record shop, getting a nod from the guy behind the counter. Mingi smiled before proceeding to head to the display opposite of you. He didn't want to make it too obvious that he was eyeing you. He looked through the various album covers, recognizing a few of the artists - Frank Ocean, Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly. They were artists he at least has added into his own playlists.
"You know, that's a really good album." The voice was soft, almost angelic. He didn't believe it was real for a second.
He glanced over to see you looking at him. You wore a warm smile your eyes flickered between his own and the album that rested beneath his fingertips. He glanced down to see a pink vinyl cover. What did he land on? He slowly pulled up to investigate. The Divine Feminine. "You like Mac Miller?" You questioned him. "I can't say I have really listened," Mingi confessed. "Well, if you're looking for someone who knows what it means to write good music, I'd start with him." Mingi raised his eyebrow, but a playful smile was curled onto his lips. Oh, I'm intrigued now. "And tell me. What does it mean to write good music?"
You smiled to yourself before looking down at the vinyls in front of you. Your fingers waltzed across the numerous plastic-covered sleeves. You pushed a few back, analyzing the covers. For a minute, Mingi thought he had lost you. He was about to apologize before you spoke up. "To create good music is to tell a story. It isn't about writing a song to make money. It is telling a story either for yourself or for other people to connect to, or to feel less lonely. It helps put words to describe situations that leave us speechless, the good and the bad."
As you spoke, Mingi noticed how your eyes sparkled. He was curious about the inner workings of your mind. You seemed to have the perfect response formulated. He loved seeing how passionate you were speaking about your perspectives. What else did you believe in? What else did you like?
"My name is Mingi," he blurted out.
You smiled at him once again, this time a bit wider. God, you had a gorgeous smile. He took note of the way your smile pushed up your cheeks subtly, making your eyes squint. He wanted to be the cause of that smile moving forward. "Y/n. It's nice to meet you, Mingi."
The way you said his name sounded like music itself. It sounded so heavenly coming from your lips. He wanted you to say his name for hours as you looked at him like he was the only person in existence. "Come on, let's go listen to that vinyl." "Where?"
All you did was smile at him. And from just that smile, he trusted you. Your smile not only mesmerized him but it made him feel comforted. You could tell him to do anything because when you flashed him that smile, he wanted to do everything for you.
You grabbed the vinyl his finger stayed on. All you did was motion your head for him to follow and he was immediately behind you.
Mingi noticed that you moved with intention. You navigated the store as if you built it personally. You led him through the aisles of other vinyls, past other customers trying to make their selections for purchase. The two of you wandered into the back that had a record player set up with two leather loveseats. There was complimentary water on a table in the middle. The room was a bit dark besides a few candles lit to create an ambiance.
"Kind of intimate for people meeting for the first time, don't you think?" Mingi teased. "What? You wouldn't consider this a first date?"
Fuck. She's hot. Mingi was at a lost for words at your confidence. He moved to sit down on the one loveseat, letting you get to work at setting up the vinyl record. Your tongue poked out a little bit from your lips as you focused on getting the vinyl out of the sleeve without dirtying it badly.
Once the vinyl was set appropriately, you smiled to smile with triumph. He loved seeing you in your element. Were you a musician? Did you just like listening to music? Whatever the answer may be, he wanted to know more about you.
"Before I play this vinyl, it's really important you know that this album means the world to me. Mac Miller is one of my favorite artists," she warned. "So if you don't like it, there won't be a second date."
Mingi chuckled lightly as he relaxed against the arm of the loveseat. "I don't think there will be an issue considering I was already interested in it. And I'm already interested in you," he winked.
You silently thanked the shop owner for keeping the back room dim. Nothing like blushing madly due to a stranger. You wanted to be portrayed as cool, mysterious, and confident. You didn't want to allow him to have the upper hand quite yet.
Gently, you moved the needle of the record player to the vinyl. The familiar sounds of the recorder beginning to spin soothed your racing heart. Music has always been a source of comfort for you.
The opening track Congratulations" began to play. You were about to take a seat across from Mingi in the opposing loveseat, but you felt his warm hand grab onto your wrist. There was no way he was going to allow you slip away that easily. He gently pulled you back until you landed beside him. His arm wrapped around your shoulder. Look who's confident now.
His fingers gently ran up and down your arm. His touch was so light that you almost didn't feel it, but it still caused goosebumps to rise on your skin. At least he couldn't detect them underneath your long-sleeved shirt.
"Do you always bring guys back here?" Mingi teased. "No, only cute ones I want to impress."
While the vinyl played, you two made light conversation. You asked the basics - where he was from, his favorite things, what he thought of New York City. He asked where you came from, about your dreams, and a few of your favorite things.
You learned that Mingi was from South Korea and he was visiting New York City on business. He's been in the area a few times, but he's never explored the city. Whereas you moved here after finishing university. You were presented with the opportunity to work for a nonprofit working with youth, so you often used music as a way to communicate both for yourself and with the kids.
Mingi was infatuated with not just your looks, but with your kind nature and energetic spirit. You were the perfect package.
Every now and then, when there was a pause in conversation, you would glance over at him. You were intrigued to know what he thought of the record. It had a bit of a jazz, r&b vibe.
Not only did you think it was beautifully crafted but you thought it fit the mood for the occasion. You two were strangers who met by chance in the busiest city in the world. Some might call it chaotic while others might call it romantic.
He noticed you looking at him. Mingi couldn't help but smirk at the effect he had over you. He kept glancing down as well. He adored the way your head slightly bobbed to the music when you weren't talking.
"My Favorite Part" by Mac Miller feature Ariana Grande began to play. You knew that it was the second to last song on the soundtrack. Fuck. What was going to happen when the song ends?
"How long are you in New York City for?" you asked. "I'm here for about 3 more days. Then I fly back to Seoul for a little bit," Mingi confessed. You didn't know where things would go between the two. That is, if there was anything meant to happen. However, if you didn't try, you knew that you would regret it for the rest of your life. He might be a one-time thing, but you craved to know more of him, to be around him, and maybe even just be with him.
"I'll make all the time for you, angel." ______________________________________________________________ Note: SO not sure how I feel about this lol this has been sitting in my drafts for the past month so I figured it was time to set it free! Maybe do a Part 2?? 👀

Hexel's World Tour Week 6 – Seoul
Everyone, I'm home. I know it sounds so cliche, but the moment I got off the plane in Seoul, I felt like I was coming home🇰🇷❤️. I already knew I could speak Korean, so getting through the airport and to the main city was a breeze (but can we talk about Incheon airport? It is so cool. I could literally spend a whole day at just the airport). I quickly got to my hotel in the middle of Seoul and it is way too nice. I feel like an imposter staying here hahaha.
Tumblr media
There are some parts of the city that feel so familiar to me, even though I can't fully remember them. One day, I ended up just walking instinctively to this hole-in-the-wall kalgooksu restaurant and had the best noodle soup ever! 🍜(or I think it's the best I've ever had. It also felt so familiar!) Another place that felt super familiar was Dongdaemun and the Design Plaza. It kind of looks like a spaceship, but I knew exactly where to exit the subway station to get there. It was like instinct. The markets in Dongdaemun are so nice! They have so much fashion and accessories 👗 it was all so overwhelming. But I was able to buy gifts for Georgia while I was there
Talking about cool shops, I just wandered around Insadong for like half a day. There are so many side streets with cafes and small shops that you wouldn't even know were there unless you went to explore. From Insadong, I ended up walking to Bukchon traditional village. Both Insadong and Bukchon are known for their traditional hanok houses. And you all, I could LIVE in one of these. They're so beautiful and smell amazing like wood and paper! I found a place in one of these hanok houses called Aromind which lets you design your own perfume scent! It was so cool and I made one for Krista (hope she likes it!) 🎁
I also wrote down all the food places I loved to go with Dustin if we ever come to Seoul together, including this place that does bbq ribs DIPPED 🍖🧀 in melted cheese and a jjajangmyeon place that handrolls their noodles! I wanted to get Dustin a whole package of Hanwoo--prime Korean BBQ beef (did you know you could buy those?!)--but I was worried about getting it through customs, also, it was a lot to ship back to the US. So I got Dustin some green tea from Ossulloc 🍵, I know it's not technically food, but it's food adjacent! And their tea house in Gwanhun-Dong was so gorgeous with all the traditional ceramics and the little displays about how the teas are roasted! Plus, they're right by Jogyesa Buddhist Temple. They told me Jogyesa is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The building dates back to the late 14th century! And you can write your wish on a piece of paper and hang it like a little flag. All the wishes fluttering in the air were so beautiful!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't mean to organize my tour around Seoul based on buying the perfect gifts for my friends, but it turned out that way. So I knew I had to find something amazing for Mac, and I did in Gangnam! That neighborhood kind of reminds me of midtown New York with all the skyscrapers and the fancy hotels and buildings. They have the flagship store to this amazing sunglasses store called Gentle Monster. But they don't just sell sunglasses, they also have amazing art displays that the store clerk told me rotates regularly! In fact, lots of the cool high fashion stores do fun artsy displays in Seoul! From there, I just popped over to Lotte World Tower and bought ALL the duty free skincare! I can't wait to try all my facemasks with the band! Apparently Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea. And they even have an aquarium in there!

Meals make the society, hold the fabric together in lots of ways that were charming and interesting and intoxicating to me. The perfect meal, or the best meals, occur in a context that frequently has very little to do with the food itself. - Anthony Bourdain
Tumblr media
Unspecified modern year. New York. Nancy is the chef de cuisine at a causal fine dining restaurant that specializes in modernizing classic French cooking. She’s formally trained at culinary school and hopes to open her own French bistro one day. Jonathan, a self taught baker and pastry chef, owns a small bakery right next door to Nancy’s restaurant. He makes familiar and comforting pastries every day, and finds the exacting nature of baking soothing. Nancy first meets him when she gets breakfast from his bakery, and they immediately hit it off and start dating soon after.
Their schedule is not very flexible; Jonathan has to wake up really early in the morning while Nancy usually works late nights at the restaurant. But that doesn’t stop them from spending quality time with one another. They have other interests– like photography and writing– but at the end of the day, food is their love language. Nancy loves introducing Jonathan to new food, laughing when he grimaces through trying oysters for the first time. They often go restaurant hopping, showing each other their own hidden gems in the city. Jonathan has an extensive list of unknown hole-in-the-wall places all over the city that Nancy hasn’t even heard of, and they try everything from hot dogs to Korean BBQ to crepes.
Nancy doesn’t really like to cook for herself after a long night at the restaurant, so Jonathan always prepares something for her when she comes home. Even after years of working in the food industry and tasting some of the best food in the world, Jonathan’s lasagna is still Nancy’s favorite food in the world. Jonathan didn’t like being adventurous with food before, but dating Nancy and taste testing her new menu ideas, he has begun to develop a broader palate. Similarly, Nancy, who hated how precise and scientific baking is, has an appreciation for the art now. She even makes Jonathan’s favorite cookies for him, adding something fun like marshmallow to the classic recipe.
Years after their first meeting, Nancy gets an opportunity to write a food column in Time Out, where she shares her thoughts about the restaurant industry and local businesses. Soon the column evolves to be a mainstay, sharing new recipes and highlighting small businesses in the city that deserve recognition with Jonathan taking all the photographs. That inspires the couple to publish their own book, part memoir, part culinary travelogue, that celebrates food and its importance to the human experience. Nancy has her own bistro now, and Jonathan has expanded his bakery, but they will never forget the first bite of food they shared together: a lox bagel shared under an umbrella because of the unforgiving New York drizzle.

Taehyung cracked his neck and looked at himself in the mirror with a confident look. Today was the day. The day that he took Y/N on a date. If he was being honest, it was long overdue. He wanted to take her on a date the day after he met her but of course his job got in the way. Annoying but that’s life. He was wearing a simple white collar shirt with brown trousers, it was his usual attire but today it felt different. He was trying to figure out which watch to wear when someone barged into his room.
He let out an annoyed sigh and turned around to see Jimin and Jungkook on his bed, eating chips. He raised his eyebrow at them and crossed his arms over his chest, I thought I said don’t come in.”
“We wanted to see our Tae leave for his date.”
“Yeah, it’s been awhile since you had anyone.”
Taehyung felt his eye twitching at Jungkook but nothing was going to annoy him today. Today was going to be a good day. He shook his head at this and turned around to have his back towards him. He put his silver bracelet on and a small smile appeared thinking about Y/N, “I was just waiting for the right girl.”
“And you think that’s Y/N?”
“Yes, I do.”
Jungkook and Jimin turned their heads towards each other with mirrored mischievous grins. They had never seen their fellow bandmate/best friend so smitten over someone. Whoever this girl was, she was special indeed. He turned around and showed them his outfit with a proud grin, “Do I look good?”
“You always look good but it’s New York, shouldn’t you wear a jacket?”
“I have one, don’t worry. I want to impress her.” Jungkook let out a small laugh and Taehyung glared at him with his hands on his hips, “Why the laugh?”
“You’re Kim Taehyung, what more can you do to impress her?”
Taehyung rolled his eyes at this and walked over to his shoes to put them on, “She doesn’t care that I’m a Bts member, she sees me as Taehyung. Nothing more and nothing less.”
“So she makes you nervous?”
“Yeah...she does make me nervous, Jimin. So nervous that I’m questioning everything I say or do around her. I just want her.”
After kicking them out, he left for his date (ignoring them screaming behind him). He entered the car at the back of the hotel and stared outside with a blank expression as the vehicle left. He was excited but he was also nervous. This was his first real date in four years and he really liked Y/N, he didn’t want to mess things up. The car ride felt like it was taking forever and every time they drove past a light post, the sweat on his hands increased. He tried drinking some water but his hands kept shaking the poor glass bottle. When the car stopped his eyes widened and realization hit him hard.
He said his thanks and left the car. He took a deep breath and entered the tall building. The Korean restaurant was recommended to him by his manager who proposed to his wife there and also Jin wouldn’t shut up about it. The atmosphere was relaxing, charming and empty (thanks to him renting it out). A waiter came up to him and gave him a small smile, “Hello, I’m sorry sir but today the restaurant is not open to the general public. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.”
Taehyung gave him a polite smile and nodded his head, “No, no, it's okay. I’m Kim Taehyung.”
“Ah, Mr. Kim. Let me get the paperwork to clarify everything and then I'll get you set up.”
“Thank you, sir.”
As Taehyung set up everything, he heard the front door open. He turned his head and he quickly turned his head to see the girl that has been on his mind all morning. Y/N was wearing a dark purple v-neck dress that stopped mid thigh. Her hair was in a high bun with silver hoop earrings, she looked gorgeous. He dropped the pen that was in his hand as he watched her walk to him with a wide smile.
“Taehyung, sorry I was kinda late. I had to help Nikki with something.”
He swallowed his spit and nodded his head, “N-No, it's okay. I just got here. You look great...like really great.”
She smiled at this and looked him up and down, “You look really great too.”
The waiter smiled at them and let out a small cough, making Taehyung turn around, “Alright, Mr. Kim, you're all set up. Let me show you your table.”
He nodded his head and turned towards Y/N with his boxy smile, “Are you ready?”
“Of course I am.”
He gently intertwined his fingers with hers and the two walked towards their table. Taehyung picked out the best table in the whole restaurant, it gave the perfect view of New York. He wanted to show her the beauty of the city like he did the night before. As the two made their way, they had small conversations about random things. When she let out a small laugh, it was like music to his ears. A melody that he has never heard before and he couldn’t wait to hear it again. When he got to the table his face dropped and his smile turned into a confused look, “What the hell are you doing here Hoseok?”
Y/N tilted her head and her mouth dropped, “Julia!? Why are you here?”
Julia took a sip of her water and smiled at her, “Nikki, said you were going out. So, I wanted to go out too. I don’t want to bother Nikki on her hair washing day.”
“Julia, I’m on a date with Taehyung. Out of all the places...”
“OH! We can have a double date!~”
Taehyung felt his eye twitch and looked at Hoseok, “What the hell dude?”
Hoseok put his hands up and looked at his bandmate, “Jin told me about this restaurant and I asked if Julia wanted to go. I think you can figure it out the rest.”
“I rented this whole place out, how the hell did you get in?”
“I showed them money?”
Taehyung let out an irritated sigh and looked down at Y/N who was also visibly upset. He frowned at this and grabbed her hand, making her look up at him. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, “I’m sorry but I promise you, I’ll make this up to you.”
She nodded her head and turned her head to whisper in his ear (he felt the goosebumps on his arms appear), “I can’t wait.”
The lunch was filled with awkwardness and annoyance (on Taehyung’s part). Out of all the places, Hoseok picked this place. He didn’t even want a relationship with Julia, so Taehyung didn’t understand why he wanted to take her out in the first place. He made it pretty clear that he didn’t want a girlfriend but his actions say something else. He kept drinking his water with annoyance and Y/N saw this, he knew this because she placed her hand on top of his thigh. Rubbing it with comfort but he didn’t feel comfort in that moment, he felt something else. He let out a small cough when her hand got a little too high and she looked at him with a raised eyebrow, “Are you okay?”
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Aww, Tae, are you nervous?”
“I will stab you with this knife.”
Extended Ending:
Taehyung was walking down a long hall with Y/N trailing behind him. He felt her eyes on his back but he didn’t dare to turn back, he needed some time alone with her (he had to lie to Julia about where they were going). When he turned a corner, he pinned her against the wall with his face inches away from hers. She looked at him with her innocent eyes and he pushed some hair behind her ear, “Are you going to tell me what you were doing with your hands?”
He watched her gulp and turn her head, “I-I was trying to calm you down.”
He leaned forward to her ear to let out a deep chuckle, “I think you knew exactly what you were doing. Should I punish you?”
“I-I was trying-”
“It would be a shame if someone saw you on your knees or even crying out in pleasure. I thought you were this shy girl but apparently I’m wrong.”
He leaned away and saw her bright red face as she shook her head, “N-No, I was really trying to calm you down.”
He trailed his fingers down her v-neck to her cleavage and stopped in the middle. He licked his bottom lip, “I can see your goosebumps, you can tell me you like this.”
He then dropped his hand to raise her skirt higher and pushed her thighs apart as he placed his knee between them. He grabbed her wrists and pinned them above her head and leaned down to whisper in her ear again, “Show me how much you want it.” And she did just that with his fingers in her mouth, to keep it hidden from everyone.

One thing that Black people know how to do is cook. Over the years, the look of the culinary industry has drastically changed. From the traditional eating standards to Instagram chefs, the chefs in the aprons share one thing in common: being the best at what they do. For National Cooking Day on Sept. 25, Black Enterprise highlights five chefs killing the game in their respective lanes.
According to National Today, National Cooking Day was set up to encourage and inspire food lovers to try something new and explore the true beauty of the kitchen. From finger-licking good barbecue to fine-dining sous chefs, these five culinary artists have created a lane of their own.
Rodney Scott – South Carolina
Scott is known to make your mouth water with his traditional barbecue recipes and is often referred to as one of the U.S.’s master pit masters; the chef and business owner has made his mark as one of the industry’s favorites. His popular restaurant, Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ, is a staple in the Charleston community, serving fried chicken, pit-cooked chicken, mac and cheese, and, oh yeah, whole pigs.
He gives his feedback to those coming up behind him as a judge on Food Network’s BBQ Brawl.
Ayo Adeyemi – London
Chef Adeyemi has brought West Africa to the U.K. As head chef of London’s Michelin-star restaurant, Akoko, Adeyemi has changed how traditional African food is celebrated.
“When I was growing up in the industry as a young chef, restaurants like this weren’t around,” Adeyemi said, according to SCMP. “So I was forced to have to learn the modern British culture, the modern Asian culture, the modern French culture.”
Under the chef’s leadership, the menu now hosts an interesting take on jollof rice, served with BBQ, native blue lobster, and smoked goat with mustard seeds.
Nyesha Arrington – California
Her multiracial upbringing has made her keen sense of taste a powerful force in the industry. Arrington, who grew up with a Korean and Black background, trained with top cooks to pick up a spatula and has served as the head chef at Wilshire in Santa Monica, California. Arrington prides herself on concurring many food lanes, including “that path of France and nouvelle cuisine,” she told The New York Times, but she says the main thing she loves is finding the common denominator in food.
While she has made appearances in the Los Angeles Times and GQ, she currently stars as a judge on the cooking competition show Next Level Chef.
Jerrelle Guy – Florida
If you have a sweet tooth, make sure you’re following Jerrelle Guy. Her mouth-watering treats come with a unique spin, ranging from black bean brownies to brown sugar strawberry jalapeno lime pie. Her different recipes have given her a reputation to be proud of, catching the eye of fellow Black girl chefs like Carla Hall, and she was even nominated for a prestigious James Beard Award.
The cookbook author has also been featured on the Netflix series High on the Hog.
Chef Resha – YouTube
If you’re looking for simple but fulfilling recipes, tap into Chef Resha’s delicious YouTube page. So many chefs used the pandemic to uplift their craft, and Resha is one of several that wears the crown. Check out her steak and cheese stuffed peppers or bacon cheeseburger egg rolls recipe and tell her BE sent you.

The fall of Illian.
3.1k words
Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Bold = Korean
Not bold = English
---------------------------------------------
My name is Senara. Nara, for short. I'm a young unemploymend woman who moved to South Korea.
Why did I move here? Simple. My uncle recently passed away and I inherited his house.
I lived in New York before, Worked as a part timer in a family restaurant. My life was hell, Literally. Waking up everyday to work from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon, getting paid the minimum wage just for all the money to go to rent and food.
I can't even remember the last time I spent money on luxury things I wanted.
Now, I stand here in a stuffy, dirty house my Uncle owned. I was never close with my uncle. I myself am surprised that he left the house for me, but I am Greatful. He gave me another chance to start a new life in South Korea, the country that's gaining fame through the new media. Kpop idols, Korean drama and all.
I am found of their books. Korean Manhwa. To be fact I happily moved here knowing access to the manhwa's will be easier, a little of a stupid reason to move here into a new country ,but I still did know some Korean, not much.
I covered my nose to block the dust from entering. Taking a good look around the house, I grabbed my suit case and walked in further.
My suitcase was light considering I had nothing valuable to it.
The house my uncle owned was a good looking house. A two story house, a small  living room greated you when you walked in. The kitchen ,side of the stairs that led upstairs.
I held the side of the stairs tightly in fear of the wood collapsing. In the small platform of the stairs was a mirror. I looked at my reflection.
My short black hair was neatly presented on my head. My brown eyes looked tired from the jet lag. And my outfit looked ridiculous, the bright red sweater and grey/black pants were not a great combination.
I let you a big sigh and kept walking up the stairs and finally reached the main room. The upstairs of the house had a single bathroom and two bedroom. One of them was my uncle's and the other belonged to guests.
I opted to rest in the guest house. I still wasn't comfortable to sleep in my dead uncle's room.
The door opened with a creak as more dust blew onto my face. Granted the trauma cleaners had done their jobs in removing what they could ,but with no one setting foot in the house, dust was all over the place.
I sighed at the sight on the room. It was bigger than my appertment in new York. I Set down my suit case on the bed and started to look for something inside.
A brown envelope that my uncle's lawyer had given me. Before I could arrive to the house. I had met with the Lawyer, Mr choi. He told me I could come to him for help anytime. And he gave me an envelope of money, money my uncle saved up for me.
800 000 won, about 555 USD.
That was more than enough for me and considering I was given a free house that was completely paid for. I couldn't complain.
It was in the afternoon but I bet shops in Korea were still opened. I took the side bag that was in my suitcase and wore it around my neck. I placed the money in my bag as well as my phone.
Running downstairs I looked for anyplace where cleaning materials were being kept. I found an old worn out broom and a few cleaning materials.
I was going to go out buy some cleaning supplies and food. I might be lucky score a part time job.
Hesitating I held the door knob, I was scared that this was a dream and if I walk out I'll never return.
" You're okay, Senara. You're perfectly fine." I repeated to myself. Calming myself down.
With a bit more confidence I opened the door, Stepping outside into the humid air of Korea. Considering that I moved to a house that was near Seoul The air wasn't the best.
I looked to my neighbours Infront of my house. An elderly woman who seemed to be heading this way infact.
" Ah, hello." She waved at me.
" Hello miss."  I greatest back as I watched her cross the street. She was holding some sort of lunch box in her hands.
" Wow, your Korean is very good."  She smiled innocently at me. I found it funny I only said two words yet she's complimenting me.
" thank you. I'm still learning."  I humbly replied.
" My name is Kim Seyeong. I made Korean kimchi for you."  She held out her box to me. I lightly took it from her.
" Thank you miss Kim, my name is Senara."   Kimchi huh, I only ate it once in a restaurant in New York. It wasn't the best taste.
" Ah, you can always come to my house in for anything Se-nara. You're uncle was one of my friends"  She laughed as he said my name. Her face slightly fell as she mentioned my uncle
I couldn't understand some words in her sentence, but I'm guessing she said something about coming to her house and my uncle.
" yes, but right now I go to shops." I cringed as I forgot some of my sentence structures.
" Ah, yes yes.  Goodbye."  The elderly woman smiled, waving from me as she walked back to her house.
I looked at the lunckbox in my hand. Breathing out a breath I smiled at my first interaction with a native Korean, except Mr choi, . I walked back to the house, placing the kimchi in the fridge.
I ran out of the house. Making sure to lock the door since I couldn't be too safe. I wanted to go to A shopping center.
The walk only took a few minutes. I had no trouble expect some weird looks here and there, People mattered the word "foreigner" a lot on my way.
The first shop I stopped in was a home supplier shop. I only needed some wiping paper and a mop. The broom I have now will do.
Checking them out was a success. They proved to be surprisingly cheap. The convince store was my next stop.
On my way there something caught my eye. A book store. A wide smile appearing on my face.  This was it. My 70% motivation of coming here.  Maybe I could treat myself... Just a bit.
The bell rang in the shop signaling the owner.
" Welcome-" the owner stopped after looking at me
"oh, umm hello, welcome to my store." The owner cringed at his English speaking skills.
" You can talk Korean, I know some."  The owner laughed once I spoke. My mind thought I had made a mistake in my sentence.
" Ah, you should have stopped me. Now I look like a fool."  He covered his face with his hands. I giggled at his reaction.
" Ah, no your English is good." I comforted the shop owner. He only dismissed my comfort as he tried to bury his head into his hands with embrassment.
I chuckled again at his reaction.
Walking further inside the book store I was met with the manhwa section. Amongst them I saw my favourite and first ever manhwa. Who made me a princess. Further into the section were more manhwa's I recognized.
It seemed the isekai, historical manhwa was popular since it was the one mostly In stock.
A special manhwa caught my attention.  It was covered in a rich, red  glowing cover that sparkled when you looked from a different angle.
My hands lightly took the manhwa from its shelf. The cover was even more amazing. It was a girl, a red head girl. She was beautiful, but she looked sad.
The story of  Marie. ( Fan favourite winner )
It was a side story for Marie. It seemed she was a fan favourite and got her own side story. The original book was ' The great fall of Illian '.  My hands searched for a book with that title.
And finally found it. The book itself was half glowing blue and red. I read the back summary of the manhwa.
Cursed by an Ancient magic , the kingdom of illian is faced with challenges. The five princesses must set aside their differences and work together for their kingdom, only to realize they, themselves are the cause of the curse.
I held the first volume of the manhwa in my hand as I took out the phone in my pocket. I searched up the manhwa and I saw how it was an ongoing manhwa.
As of now, five volumes and a side story volume have been released.
Before I made the decision of buying any of the manga's physical I searched for them on any online website i knew. I had found all five volumes ,but I couldn't find the side story.
I made my decision.  I'll read the main story online ,but treat myself to the side story as a physical, soft cover.
Walking over to the cashier.  I placed the side story of Marie on the counter. The owner from Earlier taking it to swipe. Asking me if it was cash or card. I answered Cash since I hadn't made a card yet.
I bid my goodbye to the owner before continue to buy some food to stock up on food back home.
---------------------------------------
I arrived home a bit later, at about five pm. I think picking out that food I wanted lasted longer than I hoped. I still wasn't confident in my Korean cooking skills and didn't have the time to search up YouTube tutorial so I opted for the easier option, instant food.
I quickly went up to take a shower, I made sure to be aware of the water and my hair. I remember reading somewhere that the water in Korea might not be the best unless you have a shower filter. I didn't want to risk any hair loss yet.
The water wasn't as warm as I hoped, but it was better than cold water. After showering I dried myself with my little towel from new York. I dressed myself in simple Pj's - which were a simple black oversized shirt with some sport pants from highschool - after getting dressed i walked downstairs.
I turned on the TV and the first thing was the news, but I wasn't going to pay attention to the television. I just needed some background music while I read my manhwa.
I walked to the kitchen to pour some hot water in a pot to put on the stove and prepared a cup of instant Noodles. One thing I like about moving to Korea is how cheap things were. Back at new York they were crazy expensive. I smiled at how much my life had changed in such a short time.
The water on the stove started boiling. I quickly put them in one of the brand new cups I bought and continued on preparing the noodle packs.
After I was done, I poured the hot water in the noodle cup, and closed it so the hot water could be trapped instead.
I took the cup noodles to the old sofa next to the TV.  I took out my phone to look at the time.
6:05 pm.
I'm surprised how well I was handling jet lag and how I was about to hit two days without sleep (?) The time zones messed me up ,but when I left America it was sunset and when I came here to Korea, it was in the middle of the day.
I started going to my online websites to look for ' the great fall of illian.' once I found it I started reading like a mad woman.
The first seven chapters already had me hooked. I almost forgot to eat the instant noodles I prepared.
So far, there are five Illian princesses. The first born princess Bloom and her twin Willow, Diana the sketchy princess, Marie who seems the shy type and Evelyn the youngest.
I kept reading the Manga pulling me into its thick plot. It wasn't until I was on volume 3 , did a yawn break my concentration. I checked the time.
8:34pm
It would be bad to sleep late ,but it just won't hit the same in the morning. I looked around the house and noticed that the moon that was bringing light was no longer there and the house was black and dark. I quickly went to close the curtains and light up the house.
I discovered the kitchen lightbulb wasn't working.
But it was fine. The light from the living room would be enough.
When I returned back to my set. I noticed how the TV now showcased something about Tax's rising. The person was also talking at a fast pace that I couldn't understand it all.
Whatever. The fall of Illian was calling to me. So far I could See why Marie was the fan favorite, she willingly agreed to be sold off to  the tyrant of another kingdom for her kingdom to gain an alliance and she also had a heartbreaking moment when she was defending Evelyn from her sister so they wouldn't sell her off to the neighboring kingdom. I'm thinking that the second book tells us of her life after her marriage because she hasn't appeared since her marriage.
Oh to be sold off to the cold duke of the north. I started fan girling at the thought. I placed my phone down as I started talking to the closest wall beside me.
" Now listen Mr wall, imagine. You're a princess and you're living in a big mansion with jewels and big pretty dresses and more jewels." I threw my arms up in the air.
" And suddenly, the cold tyrant duke of the north." I stood up and covered my lower face like a villain "comes to you and your father sells you for Jewels and money."
" But!" I turned dramatically. " The cold duke of the north that is somehow always back haired with red eyes isn't a cold duke at all. He's a kind giant who will do anything for you, he hates everyone except you and his personal guard friend."
I collapsed onto the sofa, my ears not missing the sound of the springs.
" Oh to have a life like that. One where you don't have to work yourself to the bone, one where you don't question what you're going to eat tonight, one where you have a life and people love you. I desperately wish to have that life. "
I lay down on the sofa holding my phone in my hand , ready to continue reading.
All the five sisters were illustrated to be red hairs, except Bloom. She had white hair. Or to have blue or red eyes. Their mother had red hair and blue eyes. While their father was a white haired man with red eyes. Marie was the only one in the family to have only one family feature. Red hair. She had light silver eyes.
I myself still classify her eyes in the blue colour category ,but the people in this Kingdom didn't. I don't blame them honestly. The author made it clear that a symbol of the royal family were their bright eye colours ,but Marie had the eye colour of a commoner. This led many to believe she was a child not born from the king.
" You deserve the world Marie."  I cried out in frustration.
I continued on reading volume 3. Until I was done with the whole of volume 5
11:46 pm
I had so much questions. I knew Diana was sketchy, she was after the throne. Diana killed her own blood. She killed Bloom right infront of Evelyn.
I stood up with my messy hair and held my head tightly. I was going to get a headache.
And I was right. Marie never appeared again. Once she hears that her big sister was killed by her sister... Oh my I can't sleep now. I need to find out what happens next.
I quickly held the side story of Marie in my hands. My bed time was practically non existent at this point.
The book consistent of 12 chapters, But they seemed long considering the books thickness.
I started reading the book . My head was buried deep in the pages as I tried to get answers.
1:56am
I ended up throwing the book to the wall in a fit of anger and shock.
" No more!"
Honestly that side story is traumatizing. The cold duke of the north is actually a cold duke of the north. He-he raped her, he abused her. He's an animal.
He manipulated Marie into thinking she's nothing but a useless vessel for him to order around.
I only ended at chapter seven. With the way things were going. Marie was going to kill herself.
I placed around the room and I started to bit my nails. A bad habit I picked up over the years.
" Honestly if I was her I would also kill myself." I held my head in frustration furiously combing through my hair.
I took a breath as I walked to the kitchen and saw Miss Kim's Kimchi. Maybe if it it won't taste so bad.
Taking a slice of a leave with my hand. The crunchy, spicy flavor overpowered flowed in my mouth. This was good. Definitely better than the one I ate in the restaurant in New York.
I ate another leafy piece before I licked my hands to go pick up the side story of Marie.
.
.
.
2:26am
I hate the author of this book. This crazy animal of a man stabbed Marie and made it look like she did it herself. His acting skills somehow convinced everyone to think she actually did it.
Marie's side story ended when she's in bed and we still don't know if she's alive or dead, only the fake as Duke who's crying crocodile tears beside her, tricking everyone to believe he's a good husband.
Such a cliffhanger and I don't think there'll be any new chapters considering the author is on hiatus.
I laid the book on the wooden floor.
Staring at the ceiling of the living room, my eyes feeling heavy. I guess it was time to sleep, maybe I might have a good dream.
Tomorrow I need to properly search for a job. I can't really survive on the money my uncle left, not when Korea has such nice things.
I turned my body, the spring in the sofa accompaning me with a song at my movement.
I could get used to this life.

Tw: violence
Montana walks with a bit of a bounce in his step. He had just recently found a place that served a great mix of Korean and Southern food that reminded him of his younger years. It is a small hole in the wall, but he found himself eating there at least once a week. Dan and Ox had noticed his improved mood and insisted that he spill the beans on what had him smiling.
Upon learning about the restaurant, Ox had given him a small pleading look that had Montana inviting both of them to join him. Which brings him to this moment, walking down the street and whistling. Dan looks at him with a raised eyebrow. Montana feels no shame and instead shoots his right hand man a lazy grin. He places his hands into his pockets and whistles some more.
He steps into the restaurant and shoots one of the owners a grin.
“Howdy Miss Martha, hows it goin’?”
“Just swell. Who are these sweethearts you’ve brough with you?”
“My partners. Dan and Ox. I told them y’all had the best food in the state.”
“Oh hush you charmer. You’ll get no where with your flattery.”
She says with a teasing smile while reaching out and tugging on his hat. Montana lets her. She reminds him of his ma. Cooks as good as her too.
“Why dont you boys get seated and Jung will come help you in a minute?”
Martha says while handing over three menus. Montana takes them with a nod.
“Thank you ma’am.”
He tips his hat and she waves him off with a smile. They sit in a back booth and slowly relax. Montana hangs his hat on the hook attached to the wall. Dan follows his lead, hanging his bowler.
“I can see why you like it here bossman. Its friendly.”
Dan tilts his head and relaxes.
“Light.”
Ox says, resting his chin in his hand. Montana nods in agreement.
“Its like bein’ home. If only for a bit.”
Montana says whisfully. Dan gently puts a hand on his arm. Montana lets out a small hum. Then he turns their attention to the menus. Jung comes over with a bright grin, giving Montana a friendly shoulder squeeze.
“How are you doin’ sonny?”
“Just fine. And you?”
“Im good.”
They order and chat quietly amongst themselves. They chat about nothing important, simply enjoying eachothers company. Their food comes and Montana smiles at the familiar foods. Grits, bacon, and the best french toast you could get in the state of New York. Along with the best coffee that takes Montana right back to early mornings in the Smoky Mountains.
Unfortunately they are interrupted by a commotion at the front of the restaurant. A group of five, who Martha had greeted have guns pulled on the woman. Montana takes a breath to analyse the situation. All had matching blue bandana’s tied around their upper arm. A gang of sorts. Martha looks genuinely scared. Jung must be in the kitchen. Montana hears the gang demand money and he stands, more than a little irritated that some one dared come and threaten his favorite restaurant.
“Your money for protection! Unless your deaf as well as ugly.”
The man, presumably the leader, bites out at Martha. Montana speaks as he takes steps forwards, slipping out a knife to sit hidden in his hand.
“Now thats no way to speak to a lady.”
“Stay out of this. This isnt your business cowboy!”
Oh such powerful insult. Montana’s quaking. He can sense his partners rising behind him.
“Imma give you one chance to turn tail and skedaddle.”
“Or what? Your bumbkin *ss gonna hit us with tractor? Or a horse?”
Stupid and rude. What a shame. The leader points his gun at Montana and the cowboy acts, throwing his knife with deadly accuracy to hit the hand holding the gun, causing the leader to drop it. Dan dashes forwards spinning and kicking the man down. Montana and Ox are right behind him, quickly removing the guns from play. Montana ends up cracking a chair over one of the gang member’s head while Ox throws two into an empty booth, knocking them out cold. Montana sucker punches a fourth, and Dan holds up the now bloodied leader by the collar. Dan gives the man a firm shake and then tosses him to Ox who wraps his arms around him and squeezes. Montana picks up his knife and then leans into the leaders space.
“I think you should have taken my offer. See, I aint some no name squirt like you are. And this aint just some restaurant you can force into payin’ for a protection racket. I know for sure you aint workin’ in the Big Man’s employ for this job. And I know he aint gonna be happy with welps like you over steppin’. If it weren’t for my severe distaste for cleaning guts off of floors, I wouldnt let you walk. But I dont want to create more problems for the fine folks of this here establishment. So. Heres my counter offer to your feeble offer. Leave. Not just the city but the state. I catch a whiff of your stinkin’ hide,” Montana flips his knife and lets his eyes grow deadly, “Well, I suppose your imagination can do the rest.”
The man swallows and slowly nods. The others seem to be coming around and Montana takes a step back. And then punches the guy in the face breaking his nose.
“A reminder.”
Montana says, ice filling his voice. Ox lets the leader go and the gang slowly scrambles out. Montana turns and leans against the front counter. Martha is there, clutching hands with her husband Jung. Montana lets the ice fall and runs a hand through his hair.
“Sorry for the mess. I dont suppose you’ll let me come back if I offer to cover it?”
Montana is genuinely worried that he’ll be kicked out of one of his few sanctuaries. Martha slowly blinks, takes a breath, and then steps forwards.
“You and your boys just saved our lives. You dont need to pay for nothin’. We can clean things up, no sweat. You did a kind thing sugar. Now hows about pie?”
Montana relaxes at the friendly tone. Jung steps forward and smiles.
“I think you deserve a full pie. Not just a slice.”
Montana smiles. He helps clean up the restaurant a little with his partners despite the protests of the owners. Martha finally gives up and settles for hugging each of them in turn while Jung goes and grabs the pie.

Featured Author Interview: Yurie Kiri
Tumblr media
Tell us about yourself.: Yurie Kiri is a shy, secretive person who used to live on a boat, sailing between various ports in the Pacific Ocean. Yurie lived on the boat until some crazy mega-yacht got loose and went on a full throttle rampage through the marina squashing everything it hit. Alas, sailing was one of Yurie's passions, now writing and photography are the main passions in Yurie Kiri’s life along with cats of course like the enhanced, intelligent cats featured in New York Stories... Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?: Yurie Kiri, born in a trailer in rural America, studied Mathematics and languages and speaks Japanese, English, French and has also studied Chinese, Arabic and Spanish as well as a smattering of other languages such as Korean and Russian along with binary, octal and hexadecimal machine language because if you really want to get to know someone you need to speak their language no matter if they’re machine or human. Yurie lived and worked in Asia for decades before coming back to America where Yurie went on an extensive backroad journey across the US and Canada from the rough Mexican border towns to the icy cold town of Yellowknife in Canada’s NWT where you need to cross a frozen lake to get into town in the winter. Yurie also sailed (single-handed) from Mexico to the Canadian border, retracing a well-traveled road journey by sea in a small, live aboard sailboat. Yurie has been traveling and gathering story ideas from Asia for the Game Series which covers Japan and other Asian countries and North America for the Murder and Mystery Series which covers the American Southwest. Do you have any unusual writing habits? I'm always writing and I write everywhere: in bed or on planes, on boats, on trains, in bars and restaurants and even on park benches. Sometimes I'm just writing, working on a story and sometimes I'm editing again and again, trying to shave off excessive words, sentences or paragraphs... and sometimes I'm watching and listening, picking up bits and pieces of people and their conversations then making notes on scraps of paper or on my phone... All that could be construed as creepy lurking but a smile keeps me out of trouble. I usually describe these story gathering processes in the "Dear Reader (author’s note)" in all of my books. What authors have influenced you? Yurie Kiri, born in a trailer in rural America, studied Mathematics and languages and speaks Japanese, English, French and has also studied Chinese, Arabic and Spanish as well as a smattering of other languages such as Korean and Russian along with binary, octal and hexadecimal machine language because if you really want to get to know someone you need to speak their language no matter if they’re machine or human. Do you have any advice for new authors? Write like your life depends upon it. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Run! What are you reading now? Science: "This is your Mind on Plants" by Michael Pollan, who I love and have read his other books. Travel: "On the Plain of Snakes" by Paul Theroux, who I also love and have read his other books. Fiction: the "Slough House" series by Mick Herron who I don't particularly like because of how he kills off good characters. I've killed off a few characters in my books too but I can always bring them back as ghosts or spirit guides however Mick didn't give himself those options. I do like the Apple TV version of his books and the cast they picked... What's your biggest weakness? I skip meals and don't exercise enough. What is your favorite book of all time? The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien When you're not writing, how do you like to spend your time? Reading and traveling. Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you? Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. I read it when I was a child and it made me want to travel and write stories. What has inspired you and your writing style? Please don’t think that this strange story about a series of murders, organ donors, witchcraft and sex sprang from my feverish brain all on its own. I have a good imagination, but it’s not that good. The truth is, one night a few years back, I was sitting in Bolero’s, a Rancho California, patio-style Mexican Restaurant, nursing a margarita and waiting for an expensive Carne Asada taco plate when two women came in and sat down at a nearby outdoor table. I don’t usually eavesdrop on other people’s conversations, but it was a slow night at Bolero’s and something about these women grabbed my attention and made me turn my head slightly so that I could hear them better. I think that the part of the women’s conversation that really made me sit up went something like this, “You were a close friend of hers, weren’t you? Tell me how she really died. No one deserved to be killed like what I heard...” As you can imagine, I took my time with my food and margarita, all the while straining to hear and remember exactly what they said. Like I often do, I took a few notes on napkins and scraps of paper as discretely as possible. However, the women decided to move on, before the story was finished, since one of them had promised to meet another friend at Jake’s by the beach. I sadly watched them go but finished up and paid my bill as quickly as possible then I arranged my notes and filled in some of the blanks with what I could best remember. After that I went to Jake’s looking for them but sadly I never found them again. The story that they told was not finished, however they had given me enough facts that I was able to fill in some of the remaining holes after some research. Although the following story was based upon the overheard conversation plus my research, it also contains assumptions that I’ve been forced to make. In some areas, the truth has been well covered up. As one of the women said that night, “You can’t believe how much money was paid to keep the details out of the local news...” What are you working on now? Sequels to the Moonlight series. Moonlight Skull which just won the "unpublished" category at the 2024 Beach Book festival. Also just finished sequel to Games series - Kijo Games which won second place in 2024 LA Book festival - "science fiction" category. What is your favorite method for promoting your work? I like both the "fussy librarian" and "bargain booksy" promos. What's next for you as a writer? Continuing to write sequels but planning to eventually have some of the Moonlight characters meet up with the Games characters in Japan. How well do you work under pressure? You can't even imagine what I've been through yet I'm still able to write. How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing? I've read and re-read my own stories over and over, probably close to a hundred times before publishing and think about them (my characters) all the time like they're real people... (which they are) when I get inspired to make a change it's a meaningful change but then I'm weird... because I believe in my characters. If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be? Be skeptical. If the insurance company (like in NY Stories) says, "Get in the boat, we'll keep you safe." Don't believe them. If the politicians say, "Vote for me I'll set you free..." You may want to think about that since it could mean the opposite and if anyone says, "Don't worry, it's just the weather..." run for high ground. 🎤 K Fuse: 'K-Fun' Summer School: The Shops at Skyview Kicks Off 2024 Summer Cultural Series 'K-Fun' Featuring Jung Daehyun Meet-and-Greet
On Sunday, June 16th, Flushing, New York, a neighborhood known for its diversity and cultural richness, welcomed one of the most enthusiastic fandoms that K-Pop has ever seen -- BABY. The Shops at Skyview, a premier shopping destination in the heart of Flushing, hosted the first event of their summer cultural series, 'K-Fun', which showcased the best of Korean culture and entertainment as they hosted a meet-and-greet with Jung Daehyun -- soloist and member of B.A.P to kick off the highly anticipated series of events. The event was a testament to the neighborhood's multicultural heritage, with Korean, Chinese, and Indian cultures all represented in the festivities. Flushing's vibrant community, with its lively sidewalks, eclectic shops, and mouth-watering restaurants, served as the perfect backdrop for the celebration of Korean culture and entertainment.
Aligning with the 'Visit Korea Year' theme, The Shops at Skyview Center has collaborated with the Korean Tourism Organization to offer on-site information about tourism and Korean cuisine during each 'K-Fun' event, making it an immersive experience for all participants. The 'K-Fun' event at The Shops at Skyview Center began at 2:00 PM, with early attendees arriving at the location around 10:00 AM. As fans patiently waited in line, sponsors and vendors set up their booths, featuring K-Beauty from Dear Klair's, K-Food, K-Beverages, and K-Wellness. Fans were dressed in their finest Korean school uniforms, aligning with the event's theme -- "K-Fun" Summer School.
Before the fun could begin, Jung Daehyun -- accompanied by host Wesley Sin -- addressed the attendees of the pre-event press conference, which included event sponsors, members of the press, and Instagram live attendees. During the conference, he discussed the teaser for the B.A.P documentary, the schedule for the day's event, and B.A.P's fanbase, BABY!
Introduction:  Nice to meet you, I'm Daehyun.
Thank you for coming to such a meaningful event today, I feel great too!  Thank you.
WS: How does it feel to be back in New York, again?
DH: 2018 was the last time I came here, which was with my members, making me remember a lot from that time [with B.A.P].  Being here alone to meet fans like this, I'm feeling a little nervous and happy.
WS:  How does it feel to be back in a school uniform?
DH:  First of all, I'm not at the age to wear a school uniform anymore, so I hope you'll look at me cutely.  I'm also very excited to appear on stage wearing a school uniform after such a long time.
WS:  You've been working out a lot lately. Could you give us any workout and wellness advice.
DH:  Thinking about it, consistency is really important.  I think eating properly (managing your diet) is the most important.  So yeah, in my opinion, it's important not to overeat or exercise too much.
WS:  Let's talk about today's activities and setlist
DH:  Today, since it's been a long while since meeting fans.  I've prepared my solo song of course.  But I have also prepared a B.A.P song medley.  I hope you'll enjoy it.
When the chance presented itself, it was time for the press and sponsors to ask questions. When an inquiry about the upcoming B.A.P documentary, here's what Daehyun had to say:
DH: First of all, our B.A.P documentary [teaser] was recently released.  I think this project will be the biggest show of the year.  Please look forward to it.
Curiosity sparked over what Jung Daehyun planned to do while he was in New York,
DH: I'll be returning back [to Korea] tomorrow, but I've already been able to experience a lot around Queens, a lot of things around Times Square.  The most memorable thing to me is that, since I've done musicals before, there were a lot of billboard screens up here of these.  So, I thought about whether or not I could try doing a musical over here someday..
Daehyun has starred in several musicals, and as an artist, you always need to be aware of how your secondary activities build on your skills as a singer.
DH: To put it simply, as a singer, when singing I think the focus on emotional delivery is important.  Meanwhile, for musicals, things such as the delivery of lyrics, musical singing and acting play a huge part.
We always like to acknowledge the relationship between fans and the artists. When asked what DABY means to him,
"It’s difficult to sum it up in 1 word. Because those memories between me & B.A.B.Y fans are so meaningful, I think this time around & more than anything else, my appearance with B.A.P is the most important and special thing in my life,"
and Daehyun proceeded with a final message for his fans, "The time has come everybody.  I hope we can make good memories together again."
Press conference attendees were left with excitement and anticipation for what the future has in store for Jung Daehyun, B.A.P, an their reconnection with BABY as Daehyun left us with this statement:
DH: Honestly, I'm really looking forward to it this year (referring to B.A.P activities).  Although we've only just started this project, we've actually been preparing it for a long time.  As it's a project prepared without regrets I hope you look forward to it.  My solo activities will take place after that which will also be prepared thoroughly.  I would appreciate your support.  Thank you so much.
The event commenced with fans entering by zones, eager to experience the magic that awaits them. The excitement was palpable as the crowd anticipated the start of the show, their spirits buoyed by the prospect of the unforgettable afternoon that lay ahead. To initiate the festivities, a brief yet captivating skit played out, presenting the hosts, sponsors, and event organizers. Next, the incredibly talented AKF Dance Studio Team graced the stage, delivering a show-stopping performance that captivated the audience with their precision and grace. Their dance routine, set to the chart-topping single, "Magnetic," by ILLIT, was a testament to their dedication and passion for their craft. The medley of popular K-Pop songs that followed demonstrated their versatility and range, as they effortlessly transitioned from one hit to the next, enthralling the audience with their energy and enthusiasm. Fans in attendance were inspired to join in, singing along and dancing in their seats, creating a vibrant and electric atmosphere that permeated every corner of the venue. As the medley drew to a close, the audience warmly welcomed back host Wesley Sin to the stage, ready to guide them through the next chapter of this extraordinary evening as he introduced "Skyview High's new exchange student from South Korea, Jung Daehyun!"
The event was finally in full swing, and the atmosphere was electric. To make it even more memorable, a short question-and-answer session with the enigmatic Daehyun took place. As if that wasn't enough, #BABY took the stage to ask their own set of questions. When asked about his preferred animal to represent the fandom, Daehyun charmingly confessed his fondness for dogs. However, the real shocker came when he was asked about performing a Spanish song, to which he replied with an unexpected 'Yes!' The reason behind this sudden interest in Spanish music became apparent when he discovered that several of the attendees were Hispanic, leaving everyone impressed by his thoughtfulness and willingness to connect with his diverse fanbase.
The event continued as it provided a glimpse into the remainder of the 'K-Fun' cultural courses in 2024 through a series of interactive activities, starting with K-Art, where Daehyun would be taught how to create an adorable cat design on a shirt, thus showcasing the unique blend of culture and entertainment that the upcoming classes would offer.
Tumblr media
The final event was the K-Culture Quiz where fans were asked questions about South Korea such as the name of the famous island and popular travel destination, and the tallest building.  The final question was the question of the day for fans as it was about Daehyun! "Where is my hometown?," Daehyun asked.  Fans' hands shot up into the air at a chance to answer this question, to which the answer was, "Gwangju."  While many people travel to Seoul and Busan, fans were encouraged to visit Gwangju for its beautiful scenery.
Between each event was a short break where Daehyun was able to demonstrate his proficiency in various musical aspects. He performed a selection of songs that showcased his vocal range and dynamism, including "Bomb" and "You're My." Additionally, he exhibited his dancing skills by performing a B.A.P medley alongside the AKF Dance Studio members. The fusion of their dance moves resulted in a visually stunning performance that captivated the audience.  Finally, Daehyun closed out the event with a beautifully captivating performance of "With You," which once again had BABY singing along.  Before ending the event, Wesley acknowledged Daehyun's upcoming birthday as the staff brought out a cake with the number 31 on it -- as Wesley acknowledged the fan club for organizing the surprise event for Daehyun.  Then, it was truly time to say goodbye as Daehyun took photos with each zone -- leaving a lasting impression for all in attendance.

Haha yeah, I...like I do know there are good places to get Mexican food or groceries (from other Mexicans) that far north BUT...
Story time: my mom was briefly an army wife and at one point this involved traveling cross country and my mom got "Mexican Food" in Indiana. She used this tale as like...a horror story my whole life. the food was that bad and made her that sick afterwards.
And thereafter she created a maxim for her children to be guided by: "you can't get good Mexican food North of the Mason-Dixon line, or east of the Mississippi."
(Corollary: obviously unless it's being made by Mexicans for other Mexicans, and not for gringos as the primary customer.)
It's probably gotten better in the last 3 decades since this incident and that's good, haha. But yeah my mental map courtesy of my mom is like....basically this:
Tumblr media
(My Mississippi river is NOT exact. I know this.)
Mexican food is southwestern. Cajun is on the Gulf. Cuban in florida. Puerto Rican food in New York. And like, yeah, I can find cool Mexican fusion loads of places (shout out to Philly having Mexican-Korean tacos!! AMAZING).
I feel like that's honestly almost too easy, though. Like fusion with Mexican food is easier because of how many cuisines are MASSIVELY influenced by indigenous (North and South America) spices and produce post-1492. Like... any cuisine using: pepper plants (bell, chile, paprika, etc). Tomatoes. Potatoes. Corn. Peanuts. Allspice. Vanilla. Cocoa. — Mexican fusion wouldn't be difficult to achieve. I think it's easier to "fusion" than cook on its own.
I will grant a Chicago update, the lone island that it is in the Midwest haha. But in terms of being known for good Mexican food, I would never think of the American Midwest first. I've been to Holland, MI! (And Chicago, and Ann Arbor, and Detroit — admittedly I wouldn't have the local experience to hunt down Mexican places while there and this would've been over a decade ago. So I'm not an expert on the Midwest.
...also I looked up this place you keep referencing and do you mean QuesaBirria Jalisco tacos (this seemed to be the best match I saw?), bc that's... not a Mexican-Palestinian fusion restaurant? The Instagram videos interviewing the owner mentions the place is halal, specifically by request of the investor, who was a Palestinian from Jordan. Which is cool that he found an investor and was willing to adhere to the rules of "no pork and no alcohol." But using halal meat in Mexican food isn't really a fusion of two cuisines all on its own. That's just straight up Mexican food.
If it's somewhere else, then I'd be interested to see what they did in fusion. I couldn't find Palestinian tacos.
[ the videos I watched were fun and also a little funny bc a) my mother is allergic to pork, and so I've grown up eating loads of no-pork Mexican food, and still do bc kosher, and b) there *is* a historical sub-cuisine of crypto-Jewish Mexican food in both Mexico and the US southwest which has developed a lot of substitutions and alternative fusion recipes to draw from, and Not to mention c) it's not even the first or only halal Mexican restaurant in the US. So hearing his interviewer be like "no one else in the country is doing it like this!" was amusing. ]
Tumblr media
These carne asada tacos from Germany....
