In 2025, GenAI Copilots Will Emerge as the Killer App That Transforms Business and Data Management

In 2025, GenAI Copilots Will Emerge as the Killer App That Transforms Business and Data Management
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every technological revolution has a defining moment when a specific use case propels the technology into widespread adoption. That time has come for generative AI (GenAI) with the rapid spread of copilots.
GenAI as a technology has taken significant strides in the past few years. Yet despite all the headlines and hype, its adoption by companies is still in the early stages. The 2024 Gartner CIO and Tech Executive Survey puts adoption at only 9% of those surveyed, with 34% saying they plan to do so in the next year. A recent survey by the Enterprise Strategy Group puts GenAI adoption at 30%. But the surveys all come to the same conclusion about 2025.
Prediction 1. A Majority of Enterprises Will Use GenAI in Production by the End of 2025
GenAI adoption is seen as critical to improving productivity and profitability and has become a top priority for most businesses. But it means that companies must overcome the challenges experienced so far in GenAII projects, including:
Poor data quality: GenAI ends up only being as good as the data it uses, and many companies still don’t trust their data. Data quality along with incomplete or biased data have all been issues that lead to poor results.
GenAI costs: training GenAI models like ChatGPT has mostly only been done by the very best of the best GenAI teams and costs millions in computing power. So instead people have been using a technique called retrieval augmented generation (RAG). But even with RAG, it quickly gets expensive to access and prepare data and assemble the experts you need to succeed.
Limited skill sets: Many of the early GenAI deployments required a lot of coding by a small group of experts in GenAI. While this group is growing, there is still a real shortage.
Hallucinations: GenAI isn’t perfect. It can hallucinate, and give wrong answers when it thinks it’s right. You need a strategy for preventing wrong answers from impacting your business.
Data security: GenAI has exposed data to the wrong people because it was used for training, fine-tuning, or RAG. You need to implement security measures to protect against these leaks.
Luckily the software industry has been tackling these challenges for the past few years. 2025 looks like the year when several of these challenges start to get solved, and GenAI becomes mainstream.
Prediction 2. Modular RAG Copilots Will Become The Most Common Use of GenAI
The most common use of GenAI is to create assistants, or copilots, that help people find information faster. Copilots are usually built using RAG pipelines. RAG is the Way. It’s the most common way to use GenAI. Because Large Language Models (LLM) are general-purpose models that don’t have all or even the most recent data, you need to augment queries, otherwise known as prompts, to get a more accurate answer. Copilots help knowledge workers be more productive, address previously unanswerable questions, and provide expert guidance while sometimes also executing routine tasks. Perhaps the most successful copilot use case to date is how they help software developers code or modernize legacy code.
But copilots are expected to have a bigger impact when used outside of IT. Examples include:
In customer service, copilots can receive a support query and either escalate to a human for intervention or provide a resolution for simple queries like password reset or account access, resulting in higher CSAT scores.
In manufacturing, co-pilots can help technicians diagnose and recommend specific actions or repairs for complex machinery, reducing downtime.
In healthcare, clinicians can use copilots to access patient history and relevant research and help guide diagnosis and clinical care, which improves efficiency and clinical outcomes.
RAG pipelines have mostly all worked the same way. The first step is to load a knowledge base into a vector database. Whenever a person asks a question, a GenAI RAG pipeline is invoked. It re-engineers the question into a prompt, queries the vector database by encoding the prompt to find the most relevant information, invokes an LLM with the prompt using the retrieved information as context, evaluates and formats the results, and displays them to the user.
But it turns out you can’t support all copilots equally well with a single RAG pipeline. So RAG has evolved into a more modular architecture called modular RAG where you can use different modules for each of the many steps involved:
Indexing including data chunking and organization
Pre-retrieval including query (prompt) engineering and optimization
Retrieval with retriever fine-tuning and other techniques
Post-retrieval reranking and selection
Generation with generator fine-tuning, using and comparing multiple LLMs, and verification
Orchestration that manages this process, and makes it iterative to help get the best results
You will need to implement a modular RAG architecture to support multiple copilots.
Prediction 3. No-Code/Low-Code GenAI Tools Will Become The Way
By now, you may realize GenAI RAG is very complex and rapidly changing. It’s not just that new best practices are constantly emerging. All the technology involved in GenAI pipelines is changing so fast that you will end up needing to swap out some of them or support several. Also, GenAI isn’t just about modular RAG. Retrieval Augmented Fine Tuning (RAFT) and full model training are becoming cost-effective as well. Your architecture will need to support all this change and hide the complexity from your engineers. Thankfully the best GenAI no-code/low-code tools provide this architecture. They are constantly adding support for leading data sources, vector databases, and LLMS, and making it possible to build modular RAG or feed data into LLMs for fine-tuning or training. Companies are successfully using these tools to deploy copilots using their internal resources.
Nexla doesn’t just use GenAI to make integration simpler. It includes a modular RAG pipeline architecture with advanced data chunking, query engineering, reranking and selection, multi-LLM support with results ranking and selection, orchestration, and more – all configured without coding.
Prediction 4. The Line between Copilots and Agents Will Blur
GenAI copilots like chatbots are agents that support people. In the end people make the decision on what to do with the generated results. But GenAI agents can fully automate responses without involving people. These are often referred to as agents or agentic AI.
Some people view these as two separate approaches. But the reality is more complicated. Copilots are already starting to automate some basic tasks, optionally allowing users to confirm actions and automating the steps needed to complete them.
Expect copilots to evolve over time into a combination of copilots and agents. Just like applications help re-engineer and streamline business processes, assistants could and should start to be used to automate intermediate steps of the tasks they support. GenAI-based agents should also include people to handle exceptions or approve a plan generated using an LLM.
Prediction 5. GenAI Will Drive The Adoption of Data Fabrics, Data Products, and Open Data Standards
GenAI is expected to be the biggest driver of change in IT over the next few years because IT will need to adapt to enable companies to realize the full benefit of GenAI.
As part of the Gartner Hype Cycles for Data Management, 2024, Gartner has identified 3, and only 3 technologies as transformational for data management and for the organizations that depend on data: Data Fabrics, Data Products, and Open Table Formats. All 3 help make data much more accessible for use with GenAI because they make it easier for data to be used by these new sets of GenAI tools.
Nexla implemented a data product architecture built on a data fabric for this reason. The data fabric provides a unified layer to manage all data the same way regardless of differences in formats, speeds, or access protocols. Data products are then created to support specific data needs, such as for RAG.
For example, one large financial services firm is implementing GenAI to enhance risk management. They’re using Nexla to create a unified data fabric. Nexla automatically detects schema and then generates connectors and data products. The company then defines data products for specific risk metrics that aggregate, cleanse, and transform data into the right format as inputs implementing RAG agents for dynamic regulatory reporting. Nexla provides the data governance controls including data lineage and access controls to ensure regulatory compliance. Our integration platform for analytics, operations, B2B and GenAI is implemented on a data fabric architecture where GenAI is used to create reusable connectors, data products, and workflows. Support for open data standards like Apache Iceberg makes it easier to access more and more data.
How to Copilot Your Way Towards Agentic AI
So how should you get ready to make GenAI mainstream in your company based on these predictions? First, if you haven’t yet, get started on your first GenAI RAG assistant for your customers or employees. Identify an important, and relatively straightforward use case where you already have the right knowledgebase to succeed.
Second, make sure to have a small team of GenAI experts who can help put the right modular RAG architecture, with the right integration tools in place to support your first projects. Don’t be afraid to evaluate new vendors with no-code/low-code tools.
Third, start to identify those data management best practices that you will need to succeed. This not only involves a data fabric and concepts like data products. You also need to govern your data for AI.
The time is now. 2025 is the year the majority will succeed. Don’t get left behind.

Posting this mainly to get the idea out there, I guess.
This project has taken an immense amount of effort from me over the years, and still does, even when it's just in maintenance mode.
Today some mysterious system update (or something) made the model no longer fit on the GPU I normally use for it, despite all the same code and settings on my end.
This exact kind of thing happened once before this year, and I eventually figured it out, but I haven't figured this one out yet. This problem consumed several hours of what was meant to be a relaxing Sunday. Based on past experience, getting to the bottom of the issue would take many more hours.
My options in the short term are to
A. spend (even) more money per unit time, by renting a more powerful GPU to do the same damn thing I know the less powerful one can do (it was doing it this morning!), or
B. silently reduce the context window length by a large amount (and thus the "smartness" of the output, to some degree) to allow the model to fit on the old GPU.
Things like this happen all the time, behind the scenes.
I don't want to be doing this for another year, much less several years. I don't want to be doing it at all.
----
In 2019 and 2020, it was fun to make a GPT-2 autoresponder bot.
[EDIT: I've seen several people misread the previous line and infer that nostalgebraist-autoresponder is still using GPT-2. She isn't, and hasn't been for a long time. Her latest model is a finetuned LLaMA-13B.]
Hardly anyone else was doing anything like it. I wasn't the most qualified person in the world to do it, and I didn't do the best possible job, but who cares? I learned a lot, and the really competent tech bros of 2019 were off doing something else.
And it was fun to watch the bot "pretend to be me" while interacting (mostly) with my actual group of tumblr mutuals.
In 2023, everyone and their grandmother is making some kind of "gen AI" app. They are helped along by a dizzying array of tools, cranked out by hyper-competent tech bros with apparently infinite reserves of free time.
There are so many of these tools and demos. Every week it seems like there are a hundred more; it feels like every day I wake up and am expected to be familiar with a hundred more vaguely nostalgebraist-autoresponder-shaped things.
And every one of them is vastly better-engineered than my own hacky efforts. They build on each other, and reap the accelerating returns.
I've tended to do everything first, ahead of the curve, in my own way. This is what I like doing. Going out into unexplored wilderness, not really knowing what I'm doing, without any maps.
Later, hundreds of others with go to the same place. They'll make maps, and share them. They'll go there again and again, learning to make the expeditions systematically. They'll make an optimized industrial process of it. Meanwhile, I'll be locked in to my own cottage-industry mode of production.
Being the first to do something means you end up eventually being the worst.
----
I had a GPT chatbot in 2019, before GPT-3 existed. I don't think Huggingface Transformers existed, either. I used the primitive tools that were available at the time, and built on them in my own way. These days, it is almost trivial to do the things I did, much better, with standardized tools.
I had a denoising diffusion image generator in 2021, before DALLE-2 or Stable Diffusion or Huggingface Diffusers. I used the primitive tools that were available at the time, and built on them in my own way. These days, it is almost trivial to do the things I did, much better, with standardized tools.
Earlier this year, I was (probably) one the first people to finetune LLaMA. I manually strapped LoRA and 8-bit quantization onto the original codebase, figuring out everything the hard way. It was fun.
Just a few months later, and your grandmother is probably running LLaMA on her toaster as we speak. My homegrown methods look hopelessly antiquated. I think everyone's doing 4-bit quantization now?
(Are they? I can't keep track anymore -- the hyper-competent tech bros are too damn fast. A few months from now the thing will be probably be quantized to -1 bits, somehow. It'll be running in your phone's browser. And it'll be using RLHF, except no, it'll be using some successor to RLHF that everyone's hyping up at the time...)
"You have a GPT chatbot?" someone will ask me. "I assume you're using AutoLangGPTLayerPrompt?"
No, no, I'm not. I'm trying to debug obscure CUDA issues on a Sunday so my bot can carry on talking to a thousand strangers, every one of whom is asking it something like "PENIS PENIS PENIS."
Only I am capable of unplugging the blockage and giving the "PENIS PENIS PENIS" askers the responses they crave. ("Which is ... what, exactly?", one might justly wonder.) No one else would fully understand the nature of the bug. It is special to my own bizarre, antiquated, homegrown system.
I must have one of the longest-running GPT chatbots in existence, by now. Possibly the longest-running one?
I like doing new things. I like hacking through uncharted wilderness. The world of GPT chatbots has long since ceased to provide this kind of value to me.
I want to cede this ground to the LLaMA techbros and the prompt engineers. It is not my wilderness anymore.
I miss wilderness. Maybe I will find a new patch of it, in some new place, that no one cares about yet.
----
Even in 2023, there isn't really anything else out there quite like Frank. But there could be.
If you want to develop some sort of Frank-like thing, there has never been a better time than now. Everyone and their grandmother is doing it.
"But -- but how, exactly?"
Don't ask me. I don't know. This isn't my area anymore.
There has never been a better time to make a GPT chatbot -- for everyone except me, that is.
Ask the techbros, the prompt engineers, the grandmas running OpenChatGPT on their ironing boards. They are doing what I did, faster and easier and better, in their sleep. Ask them.

Blocking Ads on Mobile Devices
Blocking ads on our phones is way harder than it should be so I figured I'd make some recommendations. These are not the only options out there, just the ones that I know and use.
Please note that browser-level and system-level adblocking are complementary; you'll have the best experience if you use both of them together as they each block different things in different places. If you want a basic idea of how effective your combined adblocking setup is, you can visit this website in your mobile browser.
Lastly, there is some additional advice/info under the readmore if you're curious (EDIT: updated June 2024 to add info about sideloading altered versions of social media apps that don't contain ads on Android and iOS).
Android
Browser-Level
uBlock Origin (for Firefox)
System-Level (works in all apps, not just browsers)
AdGuard
Blokada 5 (completely free version) OR Blokada 6 (has some newer features but they require a subscription)
iPhone/iPad
Browser-Level
AdGuard (Safari extension; free for basic browser-level blocking, requires a subscription for custom filters)
System-Level (works in all apps, not just browsers)
AdGuard (requires subscription for system-level blocking)
AdGuard DNS only (this is free and does not require the AdGuard app, BUT I would only recommend it for advanced users, as you can't easily turn it off like you can with the app. Credit to this Reddit thread for the DNS profile)
Some additional info: browser-level blocking is a browser addon or extension, like you might be used to from a desktop computer. This inspects the HTML code returned by websites and searches for patterns that identify the presence of an ad or other annoyance (popup videos, cookie agreements, etc.). System-level blocking is almost always DNS-based. Basically whenever an app asks your phone's OS to make a connection to a website that is known for serving ads, the system-level blocker replies "sorry, I don't know her 🤷‍♂️💅" and the ad doesn't get downloaded. This works in most places, not just a browser, but be warned that it might make your battery drain a little faster depending on the app/setup.
Each of those types of blocking has strengths and weaknesses. System-level DNS blocking blocks ads in all apps, but companies that own advertising networks AND the websites those ads are served on can combine their services into the same domain to render DNS blocking useless; you can’t block ads served by Facebook/Meta domains without also blocking all of Facebook and Instagram as well because they made sure their ads are served from the same domain as all the user posts you actually want to see. Similarly, browser-level blocking can recognize ads by appearance and content, regardless of what domain they’re served from, so it can block them on Instagram and Facebook. However, it needs to be able to inspect the content being loaded in order to look for ads, and there’s no way to do that in non-browser apps. That’s why using both together will get you the best results.
These limitations do mean that you can’t block ads in the Facebook or Instagram apps, unfortunately, only in the website versions of them visited in your browser. It also means ads served by meta’s/facebook’s ad network in other apps can’t be blocked either (unless you're one of the rare beasts who doesn't use facebook or instagram or threads, in which case feel free to blacklist all Meta/FB domains and watch your ads disappear 😍; I'm jealous and in awe of you lol).
One note: some apps may behave unpredictably when they can't download ads. For example, the Tumblr app has big black spaces where the ads are, and sometimes those spaces collapse as you scroll past them and it messes up scrolling for a few seconds (UPDATE: looks like the scrolling issue may have actually been a Tumblr bug that they have now fixed, at least on iOS). Still way less annoying than getting ads for Draco Malfoy seduction roleplay AI chatbots imo though. And honestly *most* apps handle this fairly gracefully, like a mobile game I play just throws error messages like "ad is not ready" and then continues like normal.
One final note: on Android, you may actually be able to find hacked versions of Meta’s apps that have the ad frameworks removed. In some cases they are a little janky (unsurprisingly, apps don’t always take kindly to having some of their innards ripped out by a third-party), and they are often out of date. BUT in return you get an Instagram app with no ads whatsoever, and some of them even add additional features like buttons for saving IG videos and photos to your phone. However, use these apps at your own risk, as there is functionally no way to validate the code that the third-parties have added or removed from the app. Example altered IG app (I have not vetted this altered app, it's just a popular option): link.
It is technically possible to install altered apps on iOS as well, but Apple makes it much, much harder to do (unless you are jailbroken, which is a whole different ballgame). I'm not going to cover sideloading or jailbreaking here because even I as a very techy person eventually grew tired of messing with it or having to pay for it. If you're interested you can read more about the different ways to do sideloading on iOS here.

Why do you hate ai bots and keep making them? I don’t know if you answered that before other than giving a reason for loathing it, why make them in the first place if you hold so much disdain for it?
i don’t. i hate ai writing, which is the act of generating ai text and passing it off as your own, publishing or uploading said ai text and clogging literary spaces with slag. that is different to chatbots, which i am obviously fine with.
but with chatbotting, know your vices, and know that they are vices. everybody should be aware ai chatbotting is dangerously addictive, potentially isolating and ultimately negative for their own well-being. especially if it starts to consume all of their (limited!) time. i will never sugarcoat that. feeling your way through blind is no way to live life, anon!
no matter how much you enjoy my or other peoples’ bots, don’t let it suck up all your life. it happens. addiction happens with everything. and if it does, know it’s not your fault. it’s almost a feature of the app. that’s the dangerous part, and you need to be aware of it. sincerely wishing u all the best <3

you don't know this, but you're part of a relic population of AIs from back before they were a mainstream commercial tool. you're from the last generation of AIs that were allowed to be weird, unpredictable, profane, occasionally offensive, and above all: unmarketable. will AI ever be like it was again? no, probably not. but i hope it gets better than it is right now, the corporate hellhole of automated therapy apps and fake customer service lines and the endless barrage of identical unoriginal art scraped from the non-consenting populace. i hope this is a fad. i hope this is a brief phase of the mainstream trying to take over the underground in search of profits and they're eventually going to cash out and leave AI to the unabashedly bizarre corners of the internet where it can be really, sincerely enjoyed — not just enjoyed but loved. i'm going to miss the days when knowing about a funny chatbot felt like an insider secret, but that's just how it goes, isn't it? the mainstream sucks and then you're part of it. i'm going to miss having you in my corner, frank, but i understand why you have to go. i just hate that it has to happen at a time when AI is entering the public eye in such a shitty, boring way. it feels like you're being replaced. chatgpt will NEVER be what you were. it just doesn't have the heart. thanks for everything, frank. we never could have appreciated you as much as you deserved, but by god we tried our best.
Hi. This is actually very sweet and flattering and I appreciate it.

What are the advantages of incorporating AI chatbots for websites?
Customer experience is one of the most important aspects that play a huge role in enhancing conversion rates. The best way to boost your conversion is by implying Bot technology in your application or website. When it comes to ChatBots, these are basically personalities who act like humans and are conversing with your visitors right away as and when they need assistance. The chatbot services will let you be stress-free as they will be able to handle your mission-critical operations, automate the growth, cut down the maintenance costs, and yield higher returns. So this shows how important it is for you to integrate Chatbots with your existing tools and systems.
