Columbo: An Exercise in Fatality (1974)
This is a good episode that makes for a nice start for the season. The story builds a nice sense of tension and the mystery is built up in clever ways. The solution is telegraphed in subtle but organic ways that pays off the many nice character moments throughout the episode. Columbo is given some great moments and has a new dynamic with the more actively hostile killer. Peter Falk is in top form as Columbo while Robert Conrad gives the health-obsessed antagonist a slimy and aggressive presence. The supporting cast helps with the central mystery and play off Falk in some fun ways. The direction adds to the story's more dramatic moments while using the series' trademark humor in inventive ways. The visuals create some standout moments and keep the story's momentum going. This is a good episode that works as a individual murder mystery and a continuation of the series.

Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959)
My rating: 6/10
I mean, the monsters are a bit crap and there isn't enough of them, but they actually tried to put some plot and characters into this thing, so that's something.

Colombo: Season 1 + Pilots (1968, 1971-72)
This is a very good season that gives the series a nice start. The inverted whodunnit stories are engaging and play with the audience in exciting ways. There are some great moments of suspense throughout the series and the direction brings energy that stands out among tv movies of the time. The character of Columbo is very endearing and this leads to some levity that works with the series' tone. Peter Falk is fantastic here and the guest stars are a who's who of reliable character actors from this era. This is a good season that is worth watching for fans of cozier murder mysteries.
