Packed PlayStation Theater Crowd Can’t ‘Resist’ Within Temptation

Within Temptation had a packed house at PlayStation Theater in the heart of Times Square on Saturday night. The Dutch symphonic-metal band is currently touring North America in support of their just-released album, Resist, with stellar support from Sweden’s In Flames and Smash into Pieces. For many in the crowd, it was the first time seeing and hearing Smash into Pieces. The music on the quartet’s new album, Evolver, is a hodgepodge of pop, rock, techno, R&B and metal. Vocalist Chris Adam Hedman Sörbye’s vocal range can go from melodic falsettos to screamed growls in the same breath.

Countrymen In Flames followed, delivering a much heavier performance. “You thought you were here to see soft music?” teased vocalist Anders Fridén. The band played heavy-hitting tracks from their latest, I, the Mask, like “Voices,” “(This Is Our) House” and “I Am Above.” One could have easily mistaken their set—which included former Megadeth guitarist Chris Broderick seamlessly fitting in with the group—as a headlining performance, the venue swarming with circle pits and crowd-surfers.

Her banner waving high, Within Temptation vocalist Sharon den Adel looked like a superhero ready for battle as she belted out “Raise Your Banner” to kick off the set, guitarist Stefan Helleblad and fans offering some serious screaming vocals for the chorus. The band continued with other new tracks, like “The Reckoning,” as well as the more melodic, electronic and pop-driven numbers “Endless War,” “Supernova” and “Mercy Mirror.” Within Temptation also cranked out some older material, including “The Promise,” a shining example of den Adel’s depth and talent, and an acoustic performance of “Ice Queen.”

Resist is their first album in five years. Den Adel has said that the band almost quit after the release of 2014’s Hydra, but thankfully Within Temptation soldier on. The show concluded with “What Have You Done,” with a fan helping den Adel sing. The band returned to their roots with the operatic title track off Mother Earth, released 19 years ago.
