after the shooting, rachel runs through the crowds of students in the grass and the parking lot, trying to find cal or even andre. she begs and begs for them to be safe, for them to have not gotten hurt. there’s no sign of them. she ends up breaking down in her friend’s arms, thinking cal got hurt. her heart only breaks more when she hears someone rushing out of the building saying cal and andre are the ones with guns.

Nine Lives (2016)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
A movie like Nine Lives feels like a mistake. Certainly in 2016, when everyone involved knew better. A premise this tired and unoriginal had no business playing in theaters. I saw this movie at home and felt a little more than embarrassed. Had I seen it on the big screen or told another human being “One ticket for Nine Lives, please!” I might’ve died of shame.
New York business tycoon Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) is a workaholic who never made time for his now-adult son David (Robbie Amell), ruined his first marriage and is on the verge of losing his second wife, Lara (Jennifer Garner). Their daughter Rebecca’s 11th birthday is days away and she only wants two things: for her father to be there and for him to bring her a cat. Redirected to a mysterious pet store owned by Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken), Brand adopts a cat named Mr. Fuzzypants. Moments later, an accident puts his body into a comatose state while his mind takes residence inside Mr. Fuzzypants.
Every time Nine Lives introduces a new story element, character, or plot point, a new wave of indifference splashes over you. Brand desperately wants his new skyscraper to be the tallest building in North America but a rival company is set to overtake the title. Who cares? As a cat, he overhears his wife talking about a man and suspects she may be cheating on him. So what? It’s not like we like him. Brand’s family is losing hope that he’ll wake up and begins considering pulling the plug. Good. Being stuck in a cat's body might’ve been the best thing that happened to him. Not because he’s learning any lessons - because it’s put him in a position where he can’t bully everyone around him anymore.
I understand what this “family comedy” wants to do. Brand is an egotistical, selfish jerk. This cat magic will teach him a lesson. Unfortunately, him being a cat means there’s no one for him to bounce off of, no one he can win over by showing how he's changed because he can’t talk or communicate with anyone. Sure Brand makes a couple of limp-wristed attempts to reveal his true identity to his family but his efforts are in vain and he gives up quickly. Director Barry Sonnenfeld is not interested in telling a story, he just wants to lead us from one lame cat joke to another while Spacey sits comfortably in a sound booth and narrates over the abysmal footage shown.
This movie is cheap and lazy. The special effects are terrible whenever the cat is on-screen. If a real cat appears, it frequently interacts with unconvincing sets. If the picture needs a CG kitty to fly through the air or do some acrobatics, you’ll wince. The character arcs are obvious to everyone watching even if they haven’t seen this scenario a thousand times - which they probably have. It’s a dusty script that’s been given a few dabs of fresh paint in the form of references to viral videos, social media and cellphones.
I’ll admit it. I laughed a few times but these chuckles are not enough to dissuade me from giving the film the lowest score possible. No executive watched this film and thought “this is good”. Every actor who read the script finished the last page with a sigh and said “well, I’ve got to pay those bills SOMEHOW”. Even the animal handlers must’ve questioned some of their career choices once they set foot on stage. There are no excuses for Nine Lives. (November 29, 2019)

Nice try.
But NOBODY was calling Yusif Pasha Al Khalidi a “#Palestinian” in 1877.
Let me fill in some other blanks for you.
To be clear, the Ottoman Empire was #Turkish, not #Arab.
Also, while #Herzl built #Zionism into the political powerhouse it became and was a focused, determined, genius who cared about saving his people and doing the actual job of state-building and planning, he was most definitely not the first person to just come up with the idea of Zionism – not even close.
First, Zionism is baked into the #Jewish soul – there has been a yearning to return to #Zion since Emperor Hadrian brought 12 Roman army legions from #Egypt, #Britain, #Syria, and areas of #Judea to finally put down the three-year Bar Kokhba Revolt (the Third Jewish Revolt against the Romans) in 135 CE – after which Hadrian was so embarrassed by the early Jewish victories that he murdered more than 1 million Jews, he outlawed the practice of #Judaism on pain of death, and he renamed our homeland “Syria Palestina” after our ancient, long-extinct enemies – the Aegean “sea people” known as the Philistines.
The Jewish yearning to return is why, ever since then, #Jews have always faced #Jerusalem when we pray, Jews have always said “Next Year in Jerusalem” at the end of every Seder on Passover, Jewish grooms stepped on and broke a glass to signify the destruction of the Temple and to remind us, even in happy times, that we are a scattered people, and it is why we would recite the Psalm, “If I forget thee O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its cunning.”
Also, waves of Jews from Europe frequently made Aliyah and moved back home to Eretz #Israel over the years. For example, in 1211, a group of 300 #French and #English rabbis made Aliyah back to Israel. And more Jews from both #England and #France followed them in 1260.
Nahmanides also made Aliyah in 1267, which then encouraged other Jews join him and together they built the Ramban Synagogue in Jerusalem.
More waves of Aliyah came from #Spain because of the Inquisition starting in 1492 – thousands settled largely in Tzfat (Safed), Tiberias, and Jerusalem.
The 1500s saw waves of additional Aliyah from France, #Germany, #Italy, and other European countries as well as North #Africa – these Jews mostly joined a flourishing Jewish community in Tzfat.
Then, on October 14, 1700, a group of 1,500 Jews from Europe, headed by Rabbi Judah Hasid, made Aliyah and settled in Jerusalem.
1764 saw another organized Aliyah, this time of Hassidic Jews who were led by disciples of Ba’al Shem Tov; and they were followed by more Hassidic Jews in the subsequent years and generations.
Then in 1808, the Perushim – Jewish disciples of Elijah, the Gaon of Vilna – organized an Aliyah and established a community in Jerusalem. Others followed them to Jerusalem, while still others moved to Tzfat, Tiberias, and Jaffa.
Then, in 1830, there was a significant wave of Aliyah of Jews from Germany as well as #Holland and #Hungary.
After the Ottomans retook Jerusalem from Muhammad Ali in 1840, Jewish Aliyah more than doubled in the next four decades since Jerusalem was seen as a safer place to live.
Finally, we get to the first writings of the early pioneers of modern political Zionism. Only neither of the two early Zionist pioneers were named “Theodor Herzl.”
Modern political Zionism started with the writings of Sephardic Rabbi Judah ben Solomon Chai Alkalai  (LEFT) and Ashkenazic Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer (RIGHT) in 1843.
Then in 1852, Alkalai established the Society of the Settlement of Eretz Yisrael in #London, and in 1871 he established a branch of this Society in Jerusalem.
Kalischer’s influence, meanwhile, led Chayyim Lurie to form the Association for the Colonisation of Palestine in Frankfort in 1860, and Kalishcher helped found the Mikveh Israel agricultural school in Eretz Israel in 1870.
Then, still before Herzl, Leon Pinsker published Auto-Emancipation in Germany on January 1, 1882, in which he urged Jews to strive for independence in Eretz Israel.
Meanwhile, the “First Aliyah” of modern political Zionism began in 1882, at a time when fewer than 250,000 #Arabs were living in the Land. About 35,000 Jews moved to Eretz Israel between 1882 and 1903.
It was in 1890 (still pre-Herzl) that publicist Nathan Birnbaum coined the word “Zionism” to describe the Jewish return to Eretz Israel where they could become a “normal” people again and live in their own sovereign nation in the only place on Earth the Jews could call “home.”
Then, finally we get to Theodor Herzl and his famous book Der Judenstaat (“The Jewish State”) in 1896.
That should clear a few things up.

Veuve Clicquot 🍾 🥂 "The grande dame of champagne"
It's time to meet Madame Clicquot. 🥂🍾 Pop some fizz this bank holiday weekend with Madame Clicquot or Veuve Clicquot - WIDOW CLICQUOT is out now, and get ready for the best biopic of the year!
✨ Very demure, very mindful. ✨
🍾🥂 Raise a glass (or two) to the extraordinary Madame Clicquot as she ascends from young lover to patriarchy-defying innovator in Haley Bennett's sparkling new biopic, #WidowClicquot.
The story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business that began in the late 18th century. Barbie-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot was 27 when her husband died. Rather than sell off his vines, she poured her resources & keen intellect into creating a new style of champagne for the Russian market.
Braving Napoleon's wartime blockades, competition from her neighbour Jean-Rémy Moët, & social upset at her new position, Barbe-Nicole revolutionised the champagne-making process with ingenious methods still in use today and became the world's first great businesswoman.
Beautiful... a tale of love, loss, & legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Veuve Clicquot the prestigious champagne house has a long history of producing high-quality champagnes. The meticulous attention to craftsmanship makes the production techniques time-intensive and costly.
🎬 WIDOW CLICQUOT is only in UK & Irish cinemas from this Friday!

rachel becoming an outcast after zero day.
she’s interrogated by the police and by her parents, begging her to tell them if she knew anything about zero day. she’s regarded as a criminal and traitor by her friends. she’s not even invited to greg’s funeral. when she calls any of her friends, the call is ignored; she’s basically been blocked. all she does is stay in her room and visit cal’s house.
it took a bit of convincing for her parents to let her go to the gabriel house, but the therapist she started going to recommends it. she helps his parents sort out his clothes, sleeps in his bed, and comforts his younger siblings.
when graduation ultimately rolls around, having been postponed due to the actions of the army of two, rachel is barely cheered for. she walks across the stage, only hearing the voices of her parents after her name is announced.
