they think andre’s parents won’t be home until a couple hours later, so they decide to mess around a bit. they’re in bed, going through the motions, when they hear the front door unlock. they rush to put their clothes on, making sure they don’t get caught wearing each other’s clothes (because that’s definitely happened before). what they don’t think about is shoes. why would they? how could they possibly mistake andre’s boots and cal’s converse? well, it was easier than they thought. as the kriegman parents come into the house, they see cal and andre rush out of andre’s room, each with one converse and one boot on. the mismatched shoes, along with red faces, crumpled clothes, and messy hair, tell the kriegman’s all they need to know about the two boys. they don’t say anything, but it’s obvious they know. when andre looks down at their shoes, following his parents’ gaze, he’s mortified.

somewhere in the usa you could find andre kriegman’s brother with a small cupcake right in front of him. it has a singular candle on top of it. he lights it and then stares at the sight until there is wax all over the white icing of the sweet treat.

he’s alone in his apartment. he’s been alone for a couple days now. his mood has dropped in the days leading up to today, and he doesn’t know when it’ll ever lift again.

his parents had moved back to germany a couple years after zero day, yearning to go someplace where they aren’t ridiculed or judged. they left andre’s brother alone in the states and never looked back. sure, they call him sometimes, maybe even send over a postcard, but they’d never visit. there’s too much guilt in them to even think about that.

so here andre’s brother sits, celebrating his little brother’s birthday all alone. he wonders if anyone else is thinking of andre today. he imagines that the gabriel family probably knows that today is andre’s birthday, but he doubts they’d do anything for it. why would they? why would anyone?

he considers the questions for a while. he feels guilty for even going out and buying the cupcake mix to make the batch of treats that now sit on his kitchen counter. he only iced one, and he cried the entire time.

his brother, eternally 18, should have been 43. he knows he wasn’t present the entire time andre was alive, and he has to live with that. he has to live with the fact that his presence could have stopped a massacre from happening. all he can do now is stare at the flame of the candle in front of him.

as he blows it out, he wishes for andre to come back. he whispers a happy birthday but feels too sick to his stomach to eat the cupcake in front of him. he throws it in the trash.

i feel like cal wears jewelry.

we all know about his prayer beads and his dogtags, but i’m talking about rings and bracelets. sure, none of them are good quality. some of his bracelets are literal rubber bands or silly bands. others are just random ones he’s collected. he wears rings on his thumbs and middle fingers. the rings absolutely turn his fingers green, but he doesn’t care. he thinks he looks cool.

andre hates spiders. if he sees one in his room, he backs up immediately. he throws a shoe at it from multiple feet away. cal, on the other hand, loves them. when he was younger, he always wanted a pet tarantula. he even enjoys bothering andre with them.

one time, the boys were sitting in andre’s room when they spotted a spider. andre, as usual, retreated into the corner while cal moved towards the insect. the younger boy managed to get the spider on his hand and chased andre around the house with it. in the end, he just let it outside, ignoring andre’s requests to smash and kill it.

randy and benson getting into a fight. it gets physical quickly. randy gets a slap or two in while benson busts randy’s bottom lip in one hit. their faces get closer and closer until they can feel each other’s breath and their chests touch every time they inhale. randy’s scared of himself, terrified that he wants benson as much as he does. he leans in to kiss the older man and winces as his lips burn. when they pull away from one another, there’s blood in benson’s mustache and a smear of red across randy’s face.

cal running his fingers across andre’s face as andre sleeps.

the two boys shared a bed during sleepovers, and andre would always fall asleep first. younger cal usually tried to wake him up; he would talk loudly and tickle andre slightly. as he got older, he realized he liked seeing andre sleep. he liked the quiet and the way andre’s chest rose and fell as he took deep breaths.

he would lay next to him—sometimes almost getting on top of him—and run his hands along andre’s arms, chest, and face. he’d trace andre’s nose, noting that its larger and straighter than his. he’d feel over the older boy’s acne and giggle, thinking of all the jokes he’d make about it if andre was awake.

he gets stuck on andre’s lips. he puts his hand over his mouth lightly, making sure he can still breathe. he feels the cool air come in and the warm air come out. he feels the cracks in his lips and imagines what they would feel like on his own mouth.

he does this for hours. when he gets sleepy, he just lays down and stares. awake andre would never let cal stare at him for that long, but asleep andre can’t say anything about it. he wishes he had more time with a silent and calm andre.

YES. randy who realizes he enjoys it when benson calls him girly. he knows it’s because benson views randy as smaller and someone who doesn’t know how to stick up for himself, but it doesn’t matter. sometimes benson even uses the petname ‘princess’ when he thinks randy is being a little bitchy or when he thinks he looks nice and pretty. randy smiles at it but doesn’t understand why. he enjoys feeling like a girl sometimes, and it confuses him.

randy who always cries during sex. benson never asks why, so he doesn’t know that randy’s crying because it’s the most loved he’s ever felt before. every bruise that benson leaves, every mark and scratch, is a sign of love that randy is experiencing for the first time. if their sex is angry and fast, even if it’s calm and slow, randy is in love with it.

benson and randy have had a couple close calls since leaving town. people stare at them for too long or whisper to one another when they walk past. it freaks both of them out, especially benson.

they’ve started changing how they look a lot more. benson has shaved his head and face. randy’s hair has grown out a bit, almost enough to put it in a small ponytail.

benson has the idea first. he sees a dress in a small shop the two of them were shoplifting from and immediately stares at randy. randy can read his mind. he hates the idea at first, but after a while, he agrees that it’s necessary.

they sneak it out of the store without setting off any alarms and change in the back seat of the car. the moment randy steps out of the car, benson freaks out.

randy looks pretty.

sure, randy always looks pretty. he has that deer in headlights look that benson has always admired in a way, but he’s never looked like this. his cheeks are flushed from the heat, and his pale collarbones peek out of the neck of the dress. the sleeves are short, exposing randy’s freckled upper arms. the dress reaches right above his knees.

randy feels awkward, wondering why benson is staring at him. he wonders if he looks odd, like a child wearing their mother’s clothes. he finally asks benson what’s wrong.

benson grunts and tells randy that it’s nothing. he hops in the driver’s seat and starts the car, gesturing to randy to get in.

they drive for a while. benson’s eyes shift over to randy’s thighs where the dress has ridden up. he tries to look away—he really does—but it’s almost impossible. the younger man is the most attractive person benson has ever seen.

when they stop at a motel for the night, randy changes out of the dress and into a pair of pjs aka some of benson’s old baggy clothes. benson is sad, and he hates himself for it. he’s tried to ignore his feelings since the moment he saw randy; he won’t let some dumb dress ruin his relationship with the boy.
