A Greek tragedy in modern Britain: what could go wrong… or right?

On September 4th, 2014, an audience of approximately one and a half thousand sat with bated breath, awaiting the arrival of Euripides’s infamous Medea. Anticipation grew as the twenty-first century theatron prepared for Ben Power’s modern adaptation of this piece of classical antiquity. However, was the catastrophe that previously unfolded under Athens’s Acropolis, before seventeen-thousand eyes, captured in the condensed setting of London’s National Theatre? For the approximate one and a half thousand present that evening perhaps yes, but in a slightly unconventional way.  A full screening of Carrie Cracknell’s production can be found here.

The image above shows Medea, played by late actress Helen McCrory, taking a photograph of her (ex) husband Jason, played by Danny Sapani who is stood between their two children, played by Joel McDermott to the left and Jude Pearce to the right. Jason’s attendant and the nurse are also present in the backdrop, played by played by Toby Wharton and Michaela Coel respectively. From this image alone, the level of disbelief we are to suspend as an audience is called into contest. Are we to assume that the smartphone dates to Before the Common Era? Despite the slight comical relief this may provide, a literal interpretation may somewhat miss the point. Instead, elements of this modern dress production could be argued to evoke a more intimate response from a modern audience. In his mythopoesis of tragedy, Euripides teased the fourth wall by bounding Medea for Athens at the end of the play, where her sun-curated chariot had the potential to cross paths with the theatre of Dionysus itself. In this sense, director Carrie Cracknell may have bound us, the audience, to the wrath of Medea and the horror that unfolds around her in the play’s contemporary spin.

The story of a quasi-divine barbarian, abandoning her family, as well as killing her brother, to be with her husband certainly facilitates the non-naturalistic procession of Ancient Greek dramaturgy. Yet, when Medea then kills her own children in an emotionally yet calculated attempt to seek revenge against her adulterating husband, Cracknell’s revised stage directions offer a radical insight into what truly fuels a tragic act.

For instance, Helen McCrory smoking a cigarette whilst clad in khaki, androgynous clothing portrays a woman unhinged that typical Greek attire may not convey. A dilapidated house coupled with a balcony above comprises a modern set which arguably usurps Ancient Greece in its depiction of chaos and disorder. More specifically, an all-male Grecian cast may struggle to encapsulate the true essence of female corruption Euripides conveyed in his writing, beyond the Aristotelian limitations of space a proskenion would allow. In her interview with the National Theatre (2014), Helen claimed that the symbolism of Medea’s appearance was imperative, where the switch from suit pants and vests to a billowing white piece parallels the characters switch in mindset. Medea’s grief and attachment towards Jason compels her to act in a way so potent only the feminine can accomplish. Similarly, Michael Billington highlighted in his review of the National Theatre production (2014) how the writer and director succeed in capturing Medea as both a ‘rational and irrational’ character who is simultaneously ‘in the grip of a vengeful idée fixe and yet open to maternal feeling.’

What is particularly interesting about this production is its presentation of Medea’s internal and external conflict: more specifically relating to justice and teleology. During a scene at the end of the play, both parents are on stage, with Danny’s character, Jason, on his knees with grief confronting a distraught Medea who clutches her dead children in sleeping bags beside her. At first, the interaction that follows appears to be a torment fuelled argument between loathsome spouses, but a closer inspection can illuminate the dramatic and psychological complexity of such a horrific situation where ‘Medea’s rageful act goes deep to a dark core of the psyche that we all possess.’ (2021:211). In their article Medea (2021), Corey Hooper takes a twentieth century psychological approach to the moral and cultural understandings of infanticide. They argue that Medea herself is also in some sense a victim. Her barbarian heritage and history of exile compels her to invest more into her husband than the average Corinthian woman. This approach to Helen McCrory’s Medea then allows a more holistic approach to Medea’s actions, where the slaughter of her children is perhaps a consequentialist attack engineered to seek the upmost revenge against her husband’s infidelity. Medea screeching to Jason ‘to make you finally feel something of my pain soothes me’ precedes a dialogue of emotive stichomythia which resonates with us as an audience, where what Helen McCrory described as ‘walking the knife edge’ presents a struggle between desire and action that lies within us all. Shakespeare’s famous opener ‘to be or not to be’ (Hamlet, 3.1.55) can be understood in this piece of dramaturgy as Medea’s internal struggle to act or not to act (quite literally in Helen’s case): risking remaining passive within the whirlpool of her characters’ misfortunes.

The image above shows Medea escaping Corinth on her snake-drawn chariot with her deceased children in the back, given to her by her grandfather Helios the god of sun. Within Ancient Greek theatre, this ‘deus ex machina’ moment is arguably crucial to the Euripidean play in illustrating the true tragedy of a situation. ‘As the deus ex machina of her own plot, Medea undercuts the possibility of divine retribution’ which Hopman further describes to create the ‘perfect revenge tragedy’ (2008:179). Alongside a divine intervention, Hopman’s article on on Revenge and Mythopoiesis in Euripides’ Medea  (2008),  highlights the importance of the chorus as a feminine collective force which can illustrate Medea’s position not only in relation to Jason, but the other women of Corinth. Looking at the National Theatre’s production, there then could be identified some slight areas of lacking. Helen McCrory’s exit scene shows her stumbling into a white light which shines from the depths of the forest, backing onto Medea’s house. Despite the intense music playing and smoke rising, this ending is arguably somewhat underwhelming for an audience, where Medea’s divine nature is disregarded and replaced with a stumbling, hyperventilating woman uttering lone words such as ‘come’ and ‘now’. The dramatic potential of this performance is also questioned with bouts of expressive dance from the women of Corinth. In his article Sharing Emotions Through Theatre: The Greek Way (2016), Woodruff argues that the chorus act as mediators whose crucial role is to bridge the gap between what the actor and the audience are feeling. Unless Cracknell’s aim was for the audience to feel literally ‘moved’, it is difficult to ascertain what emotions are meant to be gained from two minutes of uninterrupted, sporadic dance preceding Medea murdering her children off-stage. However, it be may important to consider the modern purpose of Cracknell’s ‘chorus’ where both the editorial and directorial aim was less focused on traditional Greek understandings of a collective conscience.

Subsequently, Cracknell’s modern production of tragedy can be seen to interact variably with Euripides’s Medea. Certain stylistic choices leave room for interpretation within the audience. However there does remain certain elements of Greek dramaturgy which, when fused with a twenty first century reality, illuminate the undiluted tragedy a woman is able to create when pushed to do so.

NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken

The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? The National Theatre Collection is a new streaming service, that draws on 10 years of NT Live broadcasts alongside high-quality archive recordings never previously seen outside of the NT 's Archive. The National Theatre Collection will make the best of British theatre available worldwide to libraries, schools, universities and the wider education sector.

The National Theatre Collection is available through Bloomsbury’s award-winning digital library Drama Online and as a stand-alone resource from renowned EdTech leader ProQuest. ProQuest will also integrate the collection in its popular Theatre and Drama Premium. It will transform the current landscape of theatre studies and digital learning by connecting students, researchers and teachers across the globe to world-class productions, archive materials and learning resources. 

The National Theatre Collection launches with 19 titles and will grow to 30 titles by March 2020. It features a wide range of works regularly studied at secondary / high school and degree level. The National Theatre Collection is available via two models: a one-time payment for the full collection, or via an annual subscription.

UK state-funded schools will be able to access the productions for free through the National Theatre Schools Collection, on Bloomsbury's Drama Online, from January 2020. Until the National Theatre Schools Collection launches in January 2020, UK state-funded schools can access a selection of recordings and resources for free through National Theatre: On Demand In Schools - find out more here.

Unique in its scope, the collection encompasses:

Greek classics such as Medea by Euripides, in a contemporary adaptation by Ben Power, directed by Carrie Cracknell with Helen McCrory in the title role

Vibrant modern stagings of Shakespeare, such as Twelfth Night, directed by Simon Godwin, with Tamsin Greig in the role of ‘Malvolia’ and Coriolanus directed by Josie Rourke with Tom Hiddleston in the title role

20th century classics such as Lorraine Hansberry’s Les Blancs and the Young Vic’s production of Lorca’s Yerma, adapted and directed by Simon Stone with Billie Piper in the title role

Literary adaptations, such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein adapted by Nick Dear and directed by Danny Boyle, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller
